Video: Drop those peripherals: Kid plays Guitar Hero: World Tour... on his bike

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
This one is just pure awesomeness. Never mind those high-priced Guitar Hero peripherals. This guy played it with his bike.

That's right, we found this video up on YouTube, posted by madflux, and in it, he rides a bike to the music of Activision's Guitar Hero: World Tour's (Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii) Prisoner of Society by The Living End set on the Difficulty mode of Hard.

Easy? Not. See, madflux and his friends recreated the whole song level, complete with notes and riffs a-flare, throughout their neighborhood. Probably inspired by Dorothy's "follow the yellow brick road" mantra, these guys put stickers on the road to replicate the notes in-game.
He also put in LED lights on the handlebar of his bike that light up along with the notes as well. Methinks this is to help him pace his ride.

It obviously took a whole lot of work to make it work, but we're glad it did. Although some would say that this is just a fake viral ad for Guitar Hero, we'd still say it was darned cool. If that's not the case, and these bunch of guys really just had a whole lot of free time in their hands, then even more props to them!

Here, have a look at it and see for yourselves (and keep a look out for that guy in the KISS costume sometime around the 3:35 mark. Coolness!) .

Sprints Wants To Help Customers Understand Their Phones

09/09/2008, 15:44 |

Sprint is formalizing a plan that will make their store employees know more about the phones they’re selling. This, in turn, should help the customers who come into the store get a better handle on the phones they’re purchasing. The move is not unlike what’s been going on with electronic stores that attempt to demystify gadgets. The better the customer understands what they’re buying, the more likely they are to purchase the time.

Spring has 1,900 stores nationwide, all of which were closed recently in order to facilitate training.

Customers who don’t have time for the 10-minute to half-hour sessions can make appointments for later visits. These free sessions will be available to existing subscribers as well, even if they aren’t buying a new phone or accessory, Dixon said.

The company tested the system in St. Louis and Pittsburgh in July, and customer satisfaction improved so much that the company rushed it into a nationwide launch, she said.

Sprint said a better educated customer was also less likely to want to return a phone.

It will totally rule, trust us. We'll have all the gadget reviews you desire, along with the clever writing you love, plus a few other surprises we'll reveal soon enough. And if you need something to tide you over till then (and maybe help you recover from that wickedly decadent New Year's party), tune in Wednesday, January 3, at 8 pm to check out the premiere of Wired Science, our very own, very new, and very wired TV show. Check here
for more details.

Since we'll be on a brief hiatus till then, we've got a double-barrel blast of reviews to appease your gadget lust. Next is an LCD TV suitable for a Sith Lord, the ideal online gaming companion, and a camera perfect for taking shots while, uh, taking shots. Starting January 8, we'll be running full-steam ahead on our new URL: blog.wired.com/gadgets. Until then, you stay classy, G-Labbers! -- Daniel Dumas

Way to Go My Brother

12/28/2007, 19:47 |

I have a fax/printer/copier/scanner that I bought a few years back… it’s a Brother MFC8840D.  The thing has been rock solid until my 4 year old, Asher, decided to use the top door thingie as a diving board.

I think it gave him some pretty good spring action until the hinge broke off.  I called Brother and within 5 minutes I had a new hinge on the way and will be sure to keep the Brother out of harm’s way from now on.

Way to go Brother - solid customer service!

John Koller: We're bullish on sales this holiday, can't answer about gaming being recession-proof

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Wake up, Santa. We want that PS3 price cut! - Image 1Everyone is feeling the crunch of the spiraling economy, and everybody's tightening their belts just a little bit more, especially this holidays. But what does corporate giant Sony feel about all this, particularly in their gaming department?

Asked by MTV Multiplayer's Patrick Klepek, John Koller, head of hardware marketing for SCEA, responds:

Good question, given the reality of how things are from a macro perspective. First off, I want to say that we're very bullish on sales for this holiday season and beyond. In fact, we're very excited about the numbers we've been seeing coming in. There's a lot of talk about whether gaming is recession proof. I'm not sure I can answer that. I can say the PS3 is selling extremely well. Maybe those rumors about people forgoing vacations for gaming might be coming true a little bit here.

Actually, if I might just say. People are not forgoing vacations for gaming. They're forgoing vacations because they don't have money to burn.

Anyway, maybe if they give us that long-awaited price cut for the PS3, sales will be even better this season? Last week's NPD results show the PS3 trailing behind the Wii, DS, Xbox 360 and even it's own little bro, the PSP, in hardware sales.

Cell Phone Prices

10/09/2008, 22:53 |

There are many things to consider before you a purchase a cell phone. One major consideration for most consumers is the price of the cell phone.

Understandably, cell phones that have very few “bells and whistles” will cost much less than a mobile phone that also serves as an MP3 player, a video camera, a camera and has a full QWERTY keyboard, although sometimes you can pick these phones up for relatively cheap if the wireless carrier is offering incentives or rebates.

What’s not included in the price of most cell phones is the wireless service to make phone calls and send text messages. Wireless plans can vary from prepaid accounts which allow subscribers to pay as they go (or use minutes) to family calling plans that offer multiple handsets for family members with a calling plan that covers all the mobile phones in the family.

You can buy a cheap prepaid cell phone at most large retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target and even some smaller drug stores. Convenient and cheap, prepaids are a popular choice for those that aren’t “heavy users.”

My advice is, check cell phone prices before you buy. Since it’s a buyer’s market, chances are you can find a better price if you search vendors before buying.

The process is meant to increase users' trust of applications that are posted on the site and to help developers wanting to build a serious business get more visibility with users, she said.

Polymorph robot mimics human joints and muscles, puts curtain rings to good use

Filed under:

Xrobot
var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Polymorph_Robot_Mimics_Human_Joints_And_Muscles'; Using polymorph plastic, some curtain rods, electric screwdrivers, motors, and a whole lot of mad-scientist creativity, an Xrobots hobbyist created this organic-looking robot base. By using wooden sockets and curtain rings as hip joints, the designer is clearly going for a human-like creature of doom here. Knee joints are kept moving with four motors each while a network of bungee cords and strings will act as muscles and tendons. Meanwhile, electric screwdrivers provide power for rotation. The legs measure 26-inches tall alone, so it looks like he's on his way to a real beast here. Hit the read link to see all the raw materials and sit in awe at this monster in the making.

Wireless Sharing of Video Podcasts in Zune 2.5 Update

06/01/2008, 23:16 |
Here is a little known COOL new feature to the Zune Podcast support in the recent 2.5 firmware update. This feature is REVOLUTIONARY and I am surprised that it has not been blogged about before now, but you can now send video podcast episodes to other Zune devices using its built-in WiFi radio. This means that if you have found a cool episode from the Best of YouTube podcast that you can send it to a fellow Zune user and then that user can watch that episode on their device and subscribe to it all in the Zune device software. While the video podcast episode is playing - just click and hold the middle of the Zune touch pad until the subscribe screen pops up. Then click on "subscribe" and when you next sync your Zune it will add a new subscription to your "Collection" area. I think that is way cool and nothing you can do in an iPod.

Toshiba G450: Mobile phone, Mp3 player, HSDPA USB modem

11/18/2008, 14:22 |

What looks like a concept phone is actually a working device that?s commercially available in Europe. The Toshiba G450 is a cellphone, MP3 player and HSDPA USB modem all rolled into one uniquely designed mobile device.

Granted that almost any HSDPA-capable mobile phone can do any of the above, Toshiba gives the modern mobile phone their own spin which, suffice to say, is definitely one of the more peculiar looking products we?ve seen in a while. Based on a review done by IntoMobile, it pretty much does what it?s supposed to though the limited 160MB storage leaves room for improvement.

With a £140 price tag and a design that definitely goes against the grain of what we?ve grown accustomed to when dealing with mobile phones, I highly doubt that the Toshiba G450 will make a significant impact in the mobile phone industry. But that’s just me, how about you guys? Would you consider getting yourself the Toshiba G450 if it became available in your neck of the woods?
