Orange drops iPhone 3G to $99.00

11/12/2008, 02:50 |

Orange $99 promo

Telcos do this all the time but by George, what a whopping drop for the iPhone! The 8GB iPhone is currently experiencing a huge price cut to $99.00 from Orange just in time for the holidays. This is way below the suggested retail price of the phone leaving a lot of subsidizing going for Orange. Moves like this usually cater to the initial appetite for gadget lust without consumers realizing how “trapped” they are in their post paid cellular plans for the next so and so months.

New MacBook Pro benchmarked within Boot Camp

11/19/2008, 16:00 |

Finally, someone with more money that I have (I want a new MacBook Pro, but haven't yet convinced myself to shell out the dough to replace my old yet trusty G4 12" Powerbook) has put the new MBP and those shiny graphics chips to the test, and drummed up some real benchmarking numbers in Boot Camp. It turns out to be PC World, strangely enough. And the verdict? Well, it's not quite so great.

The good news is that the MacBook Pro is faster than ever, and graphics have significantly improved. And trust us, any improvement over the old chips is a step in the right direction.

The bad news is that in a practical situation (like playing the Crysis demo, which is actually about a year old at this point), a MacBook Pro in Boot Camp at the highest settings isn't actually playable, and the 15 fps you might squeeze out of it on a good day still can't compare to the 50 fps you can get out of even average video cards in a Windows PC. If the graphics are turned down, it's a different story -- we've seen a new MBP run games well in Boot Camp already, so it'll play, but Apple still has a ways to go to be competitive with brand new games.

But let's keep this all in perspective -- it's very good news when you compare the new MacBook Pros to the old ones. Apple is at least realizing that 3D performance needs an upgrade in their units. Maybe next time around they can bring some software updates into the mix as well, and we can start to see some real competition in high-end performance.

Buy Now Pay Later Promos

11/17/2008, 21:08 |

This weekend, Saks Fifth Avenue ran a full page ad in the NYTimes promoting "The Gift of Time. Enjoy no interest and no payments for 12 months on item purchases of $2,000 or more." I'm not surprised. This is a great message for those who may not be as liquid as they once were and for those who hope this economic situation will abate in mid '09.

It also might hit home to wary older customers. In fact, according to our recent consumer survey, where we asked: Given the current state of the US economy, how are you planning to change your holiday shopping habits? Customers over 45 years old are more likely to say they will spend less overall and avoid any major purchases. So retailers whose customer base skews older, might try the same tactic Saks has launched.

NVIDIA ships 'significant quantities' of defective laptop GPUs

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Nvidia - Image 1 NVIDIA revealed that they have discovered some issues with certain laptop graphic processing units (GPU) which have reportedly been shipped in "significant quantities".

According to the reports, the company has not yet established exactly what is causing the higher failure rates on these units. They suspect though that it may relate to the packaging material used with some of the chips and the thermal design in some laptops.

To solve this problem, the company has released a driver which will make system fans work much sooner to reduce the thermal stress on the chips. Derek Perez, spokesman for NVIDIA, pointed out that the driver was provided directly to the laptop makers.

In light of this unfortunate incident, NVIDIA will be taking a US 150 to US 200 million hit in their second-quarter earnings to cover the costs of repairing and replacing the defective GPUs. In addition, their stock also dropped by 24 percent to US 13.56.

Anti-P2P provisions in college funding bill

08/01/2008, 16:31 |

uscapitol

The Senate has passed the Higher Education Act (the House passed it earlier this year), which, among other things, provides for federal monies for student loans. What’s most interesting to us here is a provision in the bill, which it’s expected that President Bush will sign into law, that tells college campuses to rein in wanton P2P downloading. To that end, the MPAA will provide colleges with some sort of ?briefing book? on how to curtail downloading.

Expect mandatory filtering as well, college students.

As we all know, college students are proficient at at least two things: drinking and illegal downloading. Fun fact: I was invited to join an Xbox release group in 2004 because of my fast Internet connection. That’s what you get for idling in IRC all day long. Who knows how different my life would be had I accepted the position.

It’s hard to get mad at the MPAA and RIAA for wanting to protect their livelihood, but that they could so easily influence the legislative process is somewhat annoying. Not entirely unexpected, just annoying.

On Blu-ray This Week: June 30 to July 5, 2008

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

On Blu Ray this Week - Image 1

It's time for another batch of Blu-ray movies this week! This batch features your usual healthy mix of content - drama, music, comedy - but this week's theme seems to be action as they comprise the bulk of eleven releases.

Headlining this batch is none other than the Caped Crusader of Gotham himself in Batman The Movie: Special Edition. If you're thinking that this is Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson as Batman and the Jiker respectively, you're mistaken. This one stars Adam West from way back in the heyday of the TV show. Watch old-school Batman battle fiends like the Penguin, The Riddler, and of course, The Joker.

More action follows with Leonardo DiCaprio as he assumes the role of Amsterdam, a 19th-century New Yorker whose father was slain by resident city bad-asses. What he uncovers later on is a bloody trail of gang-related violence that leads to the cause of his father's murder. If this flick leaves you craving for more psychological action, then Vantage Point is another one worth recommending. It tells the story behind the assassination attempt on the American president as captured in an amateur video, dissected to reveal a stunning truth.

Blu ray - Image 1Blu ray - Image 2Blu ray - Image 3Blu ray - Image 4

Speaking of presidential assassinations, you probably remember Clint Eastwood's In the Line of Fire. In this movie, Clint takes on the role of retired Secret Service agent Frank Horrgan who can't get over his failure to foil the Kennedy assassination in his youth. When a psychotic assassin calling himself Booth surfaces and threatens to kill the current President, Horrgan is the only one who takes it seriously and hunts down the potential assassin to make up for his past failure.

On that note, you may also want to grab Point Break: Pure Adrenaline which takes you on an intense ride aboard the Southern California waves. Keanu Reeves stars as undercover agent Johnny Utah as he infiltrates a gang of surfers suspected to be behind a series of bank robberies. With skills on the board and cunning to stay low-profile, Utah must fulfill a mission that can potentially end up with hing sleeping with the fishes.

Okay, enough meanie-gritty stuff. Over to the lighter side of things, this week offers up a barrel of laughs with Get Smart's Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control while maintaining some action elements. Want more comedy hybrids? how about Meet the Browns: Special Edition or Sex and Death 101 ? They offer up a bittersweet blend of drama and comedy. Laughing and crying in one movie seems weird, but it can happen.

Or you can go for Drillbit Taylor: Extended Survival Edition if you just want the laugh minus the action and the drama. It explores the world of high school freshmen getting their feet wet on adolescence, running into mischief and lessons along the way.

If pure, unadulterated boo-hoos are your cup of tea, then you might want to consider getting Mad Men: Season One. In the cutthroat world of advertising in 1960's New York, is there a place for love, life, and friendship among highly-competitive ad professionals? You can find out by watching the maiden season of this TV series.

For those seeking some good music, we've got extremes waiting on the wings. For those who want their music loud and aggressive, Korn: Live at Montreux should be the bomb. If you're more of an easy listener, you can go for John Mayer: Where the Light Is and enjoy some light riffs.

Finally, we have the documentary Ganges which gives us an in-depth view of India's sacred river. More than the body of water, this video will show the subcontinent's rich culture and how it was built around this holy place.

That's it for now. Stick around and we'll update you on next week's up and coming Blu-ray releases. Happy viewing!

Fiio unveils the Shuffle look-a-like E5 headphone amplifier

Fiio has just released the E5, and despite it offering a design very similar to that of the iPod Shuffle it is not a media player but instead a headphone amplifier.  The E5 comes as a replacement to the previous E3, and in turn offers 30-percent more power than the E3.  The E5 has a power output of 150mW at 16? or 12MW to 300? and less than a 0.009-percent distortion at 10mW.  Additionally, the E5 has onboard volume controls (an item that was lacking on the E3) and a built-in battery that should offer around 20 hours of use.  Otherwise the E5 measures 1.73 x 1.50 x 0.48-inches and weighs in at a lightweight 0.92-ounces.  The E5 is currently available and retailing for around $20.

Adobe, ARM Teaming Up to Optimize Flash on Mobile Devices

11/19/2008, 02:50 |

flash_iphone.jpgAccording to the MIT Technology Review, Adobe is working with mobile processor manufacturer ARM on optimizing Flash Player 10 and AIR for ARM processors. Why does this matter? Because ARM processors are found in 90% of mobile phones (iPhone and G1 included), not to mention set top boxes, PMPs, and gaming devices (like the Nintendo DS). And how will they do it? Adobe and ARM say they have three main areas they're working on to improve the mobile flash experience.

First, they're customizing the compiler specifically for the ARMv6 and ARMv7 processors, which will help speed up and smooth out communications between the processor and the app. Second, they're going to take advantage of the graphics subprocessors found in some ARM chips. Flash on desktops isn't optimized for any sort of graphics processor, but taking advantage of this on a mobile platform will not only help with the workload, but it will improve battery life at the same time. Lastly, they're making video compression and decompression better suited for the processors, so that it requires less horsepower.

It should come as no huge surprise that Adobe says Flash 10 will be running on ARM devices by next year, considering that they already announced plans for the software on the iPhone and G1. It will not only make it easier to view sites with rich web content, but it will also be easier to view and upload flash videos, and run flash-based apps. [MIT Technology Review]

Five physics lessons for Obama

11/19/2008, 18:35 |

Five quick physics lessons for President-Elect Obama from the author of Physics for Future Presidents (@ Amazon). One of the lessons: nuclear power is the way to go.

It's true that after 300 years, nuclear waste is still about 100 times more radioactive than the original uranium that was removed from the earth. But even this isn't as scary as it sounds. If the waste is stored underground in such a way that there's only a 10 percent chance that 10 percent of it will leak -- which should be more than doable -- the risk will be no worse than if we had never mined the uranium in the first place.

Muller asserts that safe nuclear power is a solved technical problem and that the use of it is a political issue.
