John Koller: We're bullish on sales this holiday, can't answer about gaming being recession-proof

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Wake up, Santa. We want that PS3 price cut! - Image 1Everyone is feeling the crunch of the spiraling economy, and everybody's tightening their belts just a little bit more, especially this holidays. But what does corporate giant Sony feel about all this, particularly in their gaming department?

Asked by MTV Multiplayer's Patrick Klepek, John Koller, head of hardware marketing for SCEA, responds:

Good question, given the reality of how things are from a macro perspective. First off, I want to say that we're very bullish on sales for this holiday season and beyond. In fact, we're very excited about the numbers we've been seeing coming in. There's a lot of talk about whether gaming is recession proof. I'm not sure I can answer that. I can say the PS3 is selling extremely well. Maybe those rumors about people forgoing vacations for gaming might be coming true a little bit here.

Actually, if I might just say. People are not forgoing vacations for gaming. They're forgoing vacations because they don't have money to burn.

Anyway, maybe if they give us that long-awaited price cut for the PS3, sales will be even better this season? Last week's NPD results show the PS3 trailing behind the Wii, DS, Xbox 360 and even it's own little bro, the PSP, in hardware sales.

Samsung Takes Top Spot in the US

11/10/2008, 06:42 |

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung Electronics surpassed Motorola in the third quarter to became the largest mobile phone vendor in the United States. Samsung's broad device portfolio across multiple carriers, technologies and segments were the key reasons behind its growth.

South Korean vendors, Samsung and LG Electronics, both gained marketshare, controlling 22.4% and 20.5% respectively. At the same time Motorola, who has been the top vendor in the US since 2004, saw market share falling to 21.1% from 32.7% a year before. Nokia saw its market share falling from a year ago to 8.4%.

The research firm said overall handset sales in the United States defied the economic gloom and grew 6.2% from a year ago to 47.4 million phones in the quarter.

HTC G1: Android Debuts, First Impressions

11/06/2008, 22:23 |
To begin, it must be noted the author is an iPhone addict, and duly biased. And, this review will pit the G1 vs. the iPhone in many regards. The photo shown here was taken with the iPhone (yes, the crappy iPhone camera).

Getting up and running was simple and fast: add the SIM card, power on, and configure the GMAIL account you want associated with your phone.

First catch: make sure the GMAIL account you are using is the one you REALLY want to use. After you add the account, there is currently no way to change it other than resetting the phone to factory settings. See the manual on how to do this.

After you have the GMAIL set, you are off and running. And playing. There are many features to check out, and the input methods are numerous: touch screen, track ball, full QWERTY keyboard and few tactile buttons to boot.

After some time cruising around the device, some initial thoughts came to mind:
  • If you don't like the idea of being forced to have a GMAIL account, don't get one. Or hack it!
  • Its much bulkier and heavier than I thought it would be; much more than the iPhone.
  • The applications available in the 'Marketplace' are very average, and seem out of date
  • Getting on WiFi is easy, but unlike the iPhone it doesnt pro actively ask you to join one
  • touch screen is fine, appears very responsive
  • adding additional email accounts is straight forward, no harder/easier than iPhone mail application
  • Feels much more like windows mobile than I would have thought.
  • Awkard holding it in landscape position (for your right hand) and using keyboard, not as nice as Sidekick, as the device gets in the way of itself
  • trackball might be overkill for everything but games. but I love it for games, and this is an important part
  • Camera is pretty solid, though not sure on exact method to snap shot (see photo on right)
Overall, good first effort. its apparent that the HW and SW is from different firms as its not totally tight. Its a PC, not a Mac :)

EA announces Spore Windows, Mac system requirements

EA announces Spore Windows, Mac system requirements - Image 1

Electronic Arts, together with internal studio EA Maxis, have announced the system requirements to run Spore, though we haven't found any indication of what the bare minimums would translate to in gameplay.

The evolution, strategy simulator has been designed to execute on specific system specifications depending on the choice of your operating system and graphics system implementation. The requirements for Windows XP are as follows:
  • 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor or AMD equivalent
  • 512 MB RAM
  • A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
    • ATI Radeon:
      • 9500, 9600, 9800 and variants
      • X300, X600, X700, X800, X850
      • X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950 and discrete variants
      • 2400, 2600, 2900 and variants
      • 3650, 3850 and variants
      • FX 5900, FX 5950 (FX supported only in Windows XP)
      • 6200, 6500, 6600, 6800 and variants
      • 7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950 and variants
      • 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800 and variants
      • GMA 950, GMA X3000, GMA X3100
  • At least 6 GB of hard drive space
For Windows Vista, players will have to beef up their computer's memory banks to 768 MB of RAM, with all other specifications consistent to those required for running in Windows XP. Gamers on the Mac will have to make sure that their system's algorithm crunching muscle must be on par with the following:
  • Mac OS X 10.5.3 Leopard or higher
  • Intel Core Duo Processor (unknown speed rating, possibly 1.8 GHz per core)
  • 1024 MB RAM
  • ATI X1600 (X1900, HD 2400, HD 2600 supported) or NVidia 7300 GT (7600, 8600, 8800 and variants supported) with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100
  • At least 4.7GB of hard drive space for installation, plus additional space for custom content (storage space requirement subject to change)
Laptop users and gamers planning on running Spore on ITX machines (those with integrated graphics chipsets) may attempt designing creatures while in transit when installed on a mobile, lightweight rig with these specifications:

Windows portion:
  • Intel Pentium D 2.6 GHz per core, Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz per core, or AMD equivalent
  • Intel integrated graphics chipset 945GM and above (965 )
  • 768 MB RAM
Mac portion:
  • Dual 2.0 GHz CPUs or Intel Core 2 Duo 1.7 GHz per core minimum (may not run if below these specs)
  • Integrated Intel GMA X3100 minimum (any lower will present very poor performance)
The hard drive storage space requirements on Apple's side is subject to certain changes, so we'll be updating you sometime soon. Until then, it's time to prep our machines for  Will Wright's major, 10-year spanning global gaming phenomenon which launches on September 7.

Limited edition Bionnic Commando items available with preorder

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
If you're into Bionic Commando (PC, Xbox 360, PS3), then you're probably into retro stuff. After all, we haven't seen this title since the NES days (not counting Rearmed, which is retro-esque in itself). If you are into the retro, then there are some freebies being offered at GameStop that may interest you: Patches! (joy)

The patches will be available if you preorder the game. Mind you, supplies are limited.

Patches - Image 1

Bionic Commando Lunch box - Image 1If you don't need no stinkin' patches (they don't actually stink. I just couldn't resist saying that line). Then maybe a rare Bionic Commando lunch box? Now THAT's retro for you.

The lunchboxes are part of an extremely limited run at GameCrazy so if you've got plans to get one, I suggest you do so as soon as you're done reading. Hey, maybe they'll fetch a good price on e-bay?

Just a reminder, Bionic Commando will be released on the Playstation 3 on February 3, 2009.

Q&A with Ben Mattes - Prince of Persia engine, characters, and graphics

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
By adapting and improving the engine used for Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360, PS3), Ubisoft producer Ben Mattes talks about the "seamless fluidity" that gamers can expect from the latest Prince of Persia (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, DS). As a result, graphics are rich and smooth, and our hero can move better than Altair.

"The new Prince will display 13 times more polygons than the previous Prince, and even more than Altair in Assassin s Creed," Mattes said. "Every detail of the faces, clothes and accessories of the characters will feel next-gen thanks to hi-res textures, specific lighting systems and shaders." Ubisoft went all out on using skin morph, wrinkle map, indirect lighting, and occlusion to provide depth to each character.

Prince of Persia - Image 1

Having more power in platforms now than before and new systems to take advantage of, the new Prince of Persia will have crisp detailed graphics that its predecessors and even competitors do not. "The
richness and the high quality of the Persian environments have always been a key element of Prince of Persia games," Mattes said.

Thanks to next-gen technology, we are able to create vast outdoors worlds Prince of Persia fans have never dreamed of as most of the game takes place outside in a fantastic mythological Persia. Whereas in previous Prince of Persia games, the player was mostly confined inside palaces or cities.

Possibly the most exciting feature on the new Prince of Persia is the non-linear game experience. It's up to you how and when to progress the storyline, as well as the endings.

iFun app turns your iPhone into a Wii-like controller

11/19/2008, 06:12 |

Taking a page out of the Nintendo Wii?s playbook, the iFun app turns your iPhone/iPod Touch into a wireless controller used for game play. It?s specifically designed to work with iFun games and there are a reported four games available ? baseball, basketball, bowling and golf - however, only golf was accessible when I visited thee site.

The game itself is hosted on the internet and the app for the iPhone only enables it to become a wireless controller. Registration is required before you can play, but there is no need to worry about paying fees since both the iFun app and registration are free of charge.

I?ve tried it out myself and there’s a considerable delay when performing an action and seeing it replicated on the screen. This is understandable considering that all the data is fed through the internet. It should also be noted that the iPhone?s sleek form factor isn?t the most easy to handle especially if you’re swinging the device around like a golf club. Extra care should be exercised so as not to accidentally hit someone with a flying iPhone.

Nevertheless, this latest gaming app does show a lot of potential. If the developer could find a way to resolve the lag and come out with more games to support such an interface, I have no doubt that this will be a future best seller.

Video: Drop those peripherals: Kid plays Guitar Hero: World Tour... on his bike

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
This one is just pure awesomeness. Never mind those high-priced Guitar Hero peripherals. This guy played it with his bike.

That's right, we found this video up on YouTube, posted by madflux, and in it, he rides a bike to the music of Activision's Guitar Hero: World Tour's (Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii) Prisoner of Society by The Living End set on the Difficulty mode of Hard.

Easy? Not. See, madflux and his friends recreated the whole song level, complete with notes and riffs a-flare, throughout their neighborhood. Probably inspired by Dorothy's "follow the yellow brick road" mantra, these guys put stickers on the road to replicate the notes in-game.
He also put in LED lights on the handlebar of his bike that light up along with the notes as well. Methinks this is to help him pace his ride.

It obviously took a whole lot of work to make it work, but we're glad it did. Although some would say that this is just a fake viral ad for Guitar Hero, we'd still say it was darned cool. If that's not the case, and these bunch of guys really just had a whole lot of free time in their hands, then even more props to them!

Here, have a look at it and see for yourselves (and keep a look out for that guy in the KISS costume sometime around the 3:35 mark. Coolness!) .
