EA announces Spore Windows, Mac system requirements

EA announces Spore Windows, Mac system requirements - Image 1

Electronic Arts, together with internal studio EA Maxis, have announced the system requirements to run Spore, though we haven't found any indication of what the bare minimums would translate to in gameplay.

The evolution, strategy simulator has been designed to execute on specific system specifications depending on the choice of your operating system and graphics system implementation. The requirements for Windows XP are as follows:
  • 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor or AMD equivalent
  • 512 MB RAM
  • A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
    • ATI Radeon:
      • 9500, 9600, 9800 and variants
      • X300, X600, X700, X800, X850
      • X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950 and discrete variants
      • 2400, 2600, 2900 and variants
      • 3650, 3850 and variants
      • FX 5900, FX 5950 (FX supported only in Windows XP)
      • 6200, 6500, 6600, 6800 and variants
      • 7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950 and variants
      • 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800 and variants
      • GMA 950, GMA X3000, GMA X3100
  • At least 6 GB of hard drive space
For Windows Vista, players will have to beef up their computer's memory banks to 768 MB of RAM, with all other specifications consistent to those required for running in Windows XP. Gamers on the Mac will have to make sure that their system's algorithm crunching muscle must be on par with the following:
  • Mac OS X 10.5.3 Leopard or higher
  • Intel Core Duo Processor (unknown speed rating, possibly 1.8 GHz per core)
  • 1024 MB RAM
  • ATI X1600 (X1900, HD 2400, HD 2600 supported) or NVidia 7300 GT (7600, 8600, 8800 and variants supported) with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100
  • At least 4.7GB of hard drive space for installation, plus additional space for custom content (storage space requirement subject to change)
Laptop users and gamers planning on running Spore on ITX machines (those with integrated graphics chipsets) may attempt designing creatures while in transit when installed on a mobile, lightweight rig with these specifications:

Windows portion:
  • Intel Pentium D 2.6 GHz per core, Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz per core, or AMD equivalent
  • Intel integrated graphics chipset 945GM and above (965 )
  • 768 MB RAM
Mac portion:
  • Dual 2.0 GHz CPUs or Intel Core 2 Duo 1.7 GHz per core minimum (may not run if below these specs)
  • Integrated Intel GMA X3100 minimum (any lower will present very poor performance)
The hard drive storage space requirements on Apple's side is subject to certain changes, so we'll be updating you sometime soon. Until then, it's time to prep our machines for  Will Wright's major, 10-year spanning global gaming phenomenon which launches on September 7.

LG Prada 2 microsite, Bluetooth watch Launched

11/19/2008, 02:39 |

We?ve seen the official specs of the LG Prada 2 already, but since then, we haven?t had any news about this QWERTY-equipped follow-up to the original Prada phone.

That wait is over. LG has now launched an official microsite, reminding us that such a phone still exists. Aside from the phone itself, they also feature an equally stylish Bluetooth watch they so aptly called the Prada Link. We?re guessing it can be used in tandem with the Prada 2 phone so you can control it remotely Dick Tracy-style. There?s also a headset and leather pouch to go along with this branded line, but we?re not exactly sure if its part of the standard package of accessories or if you need to purchase it separately. We?re hoping that it?s the former as opposed to the latter, but at this point, we?re not ready to make any assumptions.

Sadly we have yet to receive confirmation on its final selling price and exact release date. Oh well, a little patience never hurt anyone, but looking at the LG Prada 2’s microsite sure got me interested all of a sudden.

I'm Protesting Proposition 8 Tomorrow; Please Consider Protesting Too

11/15/2008, 05:30 |

Euphoria over Obama's win, followed by disbelief and despair over over Proposition 8's ban on gay marriage passing in California. I'll be out protesting tomorrow at South Coast Plaza in Orange County as part of a nationwide campaign. Please consider going to a location yourself. And if you're against gay marriage, please, some words to consider.

I sat on my patio last weekend listening to my neighbors across the street, in a small party on their roof, discussing Proposition 8. "I don't want them coming to my church to get married," said the most vocal of the bunch. "We don't want to encourage them." And, inevitably as a result of those terrible TV commercials, "We don't want them teaching that in schools."

Ironically, those who voted for Proposition 8 to keep our schools "safe" from the instruction that was never going to happen have now helped guarantee that gay marriage WILL be taught in schools. The struggle won't go away. It's a civil rights movement that will only get stronger, be a part of California history and will be taught to school children from years to come. And years from now, many people will look back on the struggle in the same way they view other civil rights struggles and think, "How could this have been done to a group of people."

Gay marriage is personal to me. "Them" gay people aren't some nebulous group that exists only in San Francisco. They're real people I know, with names like Ken, Jessie, Ted and Greg.

Greg, godfather to my children. One of the best friends you could have. Someone that deserves, if he should want to marry, to have the right to do so.

I simply don't get it. You can fight for your country -- just don't say your gay, and it's OK? And should you die defending your country, sorry -- no folded flag, since you can't have a spouse.

When I heard the news of the loss, one of my first thoughts was that I wanted all the gay people in American to go on strike for a day -- to really illustrate how many there are. Turns out, there's a movement now to make that happen, this Dec. 10, "No Gays For A Day." I hope it happens.

Somewhat related, last weekend, there was a fascinating piece in the Los Angeles Times by Jasmyne Cannick, a Black lesbian, on why she wasn't surprised that Blacks voted so heavily in favor of the proposition. You have to appreciate her honesty, as well as her realism of the challenge:

Even I wasn't inspired to encourage black people to vote against the proposition. Why? Because I don't see why the right to marry should be a priority for me or other black people. Gay marriage? Please. At a time when blacks are still more likely than whites to be pulled over for no reason, more likely to be unemployed than whites, more likely to live at or below the poverty line, I was too busy trying to get black people registered to vote, period; I wasn't about to focus my attention on what couldn't help but feel like a secondary issue.

It's hard. Watching Obama talk about gay marriage as a state issue; watching Biden in the debate with Palin say he was for partnerships but not gay marriage, it was disheartening knowing that was a compromise they had to make, just as Clinton compromised on gays in the military. Obama had challenges enough winning the trust of some in America without having to have support of gay marriage bogging his campaign down, which is almost certainly would have. I understood the compromise. It didn't make the taste less bitter.

So I can understand what Cannick wrote. I can understand, though I can never really feel, the inequalities she describes and has experienced. But if there was a proposition on the ballot that allowed me to deal with those problems? That allowed me to vote for equality? I'd vote for it. I'd hope anyone would vote for it and not think, "No, not until X, Y & Z" are fixed first.

Finally, I'll leave with a video from Keith Olbermann that's been capturing attention, where he speaks succinctly on the issue. Consider that about 1/3 of US states had laws preventing Blacks & Whites from being married as late as 1967 -- and as he notes, Barack Obama's own parents couldn't have been married.

Please consider showing your support at a protest tomorrow. If not tomorrow, then another time, in another way. And please reconsider your position, if you've been against gay marriage. There are real people, with real feelings and desires, who simply want the same rights independent of the fact that they share their love with someone of the same sex.

Zune Springs Ahead To 2.5 Update

05/06/2008, 11:18 |
I have been working late tonight at Zune working on getting the new spring update to Zune users. The update included the release of NBC and MTV TV show content in the Zune Marketplace. I am a little loopy now as it has been many late nights here over the past month getting ready for this release. I have been doing the content programming of these new TV shows and podcasts.

I have also been working with NBC and MTV to get the marketing pieces and content offerings together for this launch. I think this is a big step for the Zune as it moves us into competing with iTunes directly with top quality video content.

A couple of highlights for the new release:
- Zune Cards now go to the device: listen to your friends music recommendations on-the-go.
- The social is now in the client.
- Mini-feeds keeping you up-to-date on all your friends music at Zune.net.
- Enhanced friends search.
- Reputation badges for passionate promoters of entertainment they love.
- New metadata editing tools
- Gapless playback (great for live concerts!!)
- The inclusion of NBC in our launch video partner list: get The Office, Heroes and 30 Rock here!
- An incredible line up of shows from MTV, Comedy Central, Adult Swim and Vh1
- Over 800 shows at launch in the Zune Video Store
- Integration with Windows Live Messenger
