Networks being updated?.

11/03/2008, 19:04 |

Or so you thought. Petrol in Malaysia is 15c cheaper, yet fuel surcharges are still there to help MAS recover their costs. The thing is fuel surcharge (some denoted as YT) is costing more than the AIR TICKET ITSELF. Despite lowering JET 1-A going down, we are paying so dearly for these costs. Especially those who need to study, or to travel for work or business and such.

I’m updating some of the technical backend at CHAT.NU Community Blogs, where it’s like another WORDPRESS.COM thingy, less the nagware and stuff and I’ve been toying with the plugins, games and add-ons for everyone. Likewise, I came to light the new feature on Adsense, which is a referral link report, and it shows the conversions and fraud levels which is useful to see what your visitors (customers) are seeing.

Another is the implementation of Custom Search. It’s something to toy about. And those who know of it, I will be on road show again, thsi time at Melaka MITC for the SDSI program. So ..try catch me!

Why Music Can’t Just Be Free: continuing on the debate

11/17/2008, 22:23 |

My ‘Why Music Can’t Just Be Free’ post has stirred up a hornets nest of debate and comment. As Juupiter’s weblogs don’t enable comments I’ve decided to continue the debate on my other weblog MusicIndustryBlog. My opinions are just that, and Jupiter has always believed that good opinions are shaped through debate. So if you want to join the debate join me over there. For those of you that have sent emails or direct messages via Twitter I will reply to you just as soon as I find time.

Note: my colleague Ian Fogg points out that I inferred in my previous post that SourceForge are a developer when they in fact a developer platform.

Some Issues With The Windows Mobile 6.1 SMTP Patch?

11/18/2008, 08:00 |
http://www.mobilejaw.com/thoughts/2...-email-accounts

First of all, let me say that I had no problems with the SMTP patch Microsoft released recently for Windows Mobile 6.1 devices, other than the sudden soft reset that happened without warning. We discussed it here. Fellow MVP Mike Temporale at MobileJaw had a different experience though.

"A number of news sites have been reporting about Microsoft releasing a patch that fixes an issue with sending email on your Windows Mobile 6.1 device. The patch is available from the Outlook Mobile team web site and claims to fix the problem. I'm sure it might do that, but there are a number of things that they fail to mention. So before you go and install this patch, read the issues below and weigh the decision to install or not."

He goes on to mention that email accounts were deleted (pictured above), the device restarted in flight mode and the sudden soft reset. As I said, the soft reset I experienced. I am 99% sure my device didn't come back up in flight mode and I know my 2 POP3 and 1 IMAP4 accounts were all unaffected by the update. Now, I have heard some other issues with the patch as well. Right here in our own forums, some witnessed the deletion of accounts and one said his email functionality was completely broken until the patch was uninstalled. I am interested in hearing the success rates and failures of those that have applied it, as well as how many of you aren't having an issue with email so have held off on applying the patch.

A Shared, Interinstitutional Undergraduate Minor Program in Computational Science

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Nine Ohio higher education institutions combined expertise to implement an interinstitutional, competency-based undergraduate minor curriculum in computational science. The program, which began in Autumn 2007, is part of an National Science Foundation Cyberinfrastructure Team Award and the new, statewide virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science. Key program elements include the definition of the program's interdisciplinary competency requirements, sharable instructional modules, and interinstitutional agreements for cross registration. Many courses are offered remotely, so students can access computational science instruction likely unavailable at their home institutions. The program is a model for interdisciplinary, interinstitutional activities that provide the expertise required to advance the application of computational methods to new discoveries in science and engineering.

The Incite is available now for $199.99 with a 2-year agreement. Read on for the full details.

AT&T and LG Mobile Phones Launch New Windows Mobile 6.1 Smartphone With Sleek Design, Vibrant Touch Screen, aGPS, Wi-Fi and More

Dallas, Texas, San Diego, California, November 18, 2008

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A. Inc. (LG Mobile Phones) today announced the availability of the LG Incite?, the newest Windows Mobile device powered by the nation's fastest 3G network for users who crave premium capabilities with ultramodern design. The Incite ? available in the U.S. exclusively to AT&T customers ? stirs up the smartphone market, with its stylish, sleek look and sophisticated technology.

The LG Incite boasts the latest in wireless communications technology, with domestic and international 3G capabilities, built-in aGPS and Wi-Fi® (802.11 b/g) and Bluetooth 2.0®. The LG Incite is equipped with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, Microsoft Office Mobile and Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5. The Incite, the first of its kind for LG Mobile, offers Windows Media Player 10.

LG Incite looks as good as it sounds: a sophisticated, sleek design, a crystal-clear 3-inch touch screen and a 3.0 megapixel camera and camcorder that enables consumers to send and enjoy memories at the touch of a button. Users have a choice of on-screen virtual keyboards ? a full, QWERTY keyboard in landscape mode and a 20-key keyboard in portrait view ? with haptic keys that provide vibration feedback. The Incite also offers users choice in terms of screen navigation by simply using their fingers to move through the Incite's friendly user interface, the scroll button to the upper right of the screen or the included stylus. A configurable, drag-and-drop favorites menu provides quick access to the applications that matter most to the user.

The Incite is pre-loaded with everything you'd expect, including AT&T Navigator, powered by TeleNav, featuring turn-by-turn voice and on-screen directions with colorful 3-D moving maps that can be used in vehicles or while walking. AT&T Navigator also features traffic alerts, re-routing and other location-based services. There also is business and personal e-mail access through Microsoft Direct Push and AT&T's Xpress Mail service, instant messaging and AT&T Mobile Music service, which provides fast access to downloadable music from eMusic®.

The Incite also features AT&T Video ShareSM, the first-ever service in the U.S. that allows users to share live video over wireless devices while participating in a voice call.

"LG Mobile Phones has done an outstanding job in its first offering in the U.S. smartphone arena with the LG Incite, and AT&T is pleased to the be first U.S. carrier to offer an LG smartphone," said Michael Woodward, vice president, Smart Devices for AT&T's wireless operations. "It is a great looking smartphone with powerful capabilities that will provide our customers with a new and outstanding choice in our Windows Mobile smartphone portfolio, which is the broadest in the industry."

Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of Marketing and Product Strategy for LG Mobile Phones, said: "LG is excited to offer a phone with a different capability than anything we've offered in the U.S. thus far. As a leading provider of handsets, LG constantly looks toward the future and strives to incorporate the newest technologies as they become available to our consumers."

The Incite also supports Microsoft's System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008, an enterprise-grade mobile solution for managing and protecting Windows Mobile 6.1 phones. Mobile Device Manager helps companies provide its mobile workers with software updates and applications over the air, as well as security-enhanced access to company data. The Incite operates on AT&T's 3G BroadbandConnect network, which currently is available in more than 320 major metropolitan areas in the U.S. and, by year-end, AT&T expects to offer the service in nearly 350 leading U.S. markets. In addition to 3G connectivity, the Incite is also designed to connect seamlessly with AT&T's nationwide1 EDGE network, which is available in more than 13,000 cities and towns and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. The Characters Of The Balboa Peninsula

11/19/2008, 04:28 |

Birdman Of Newport (Cropped)

Football guy is back! I should take a picture of football guy. He's a sight to behold, somewhat middle aged, clad in a tight body-fitting yellow spandex top and trunks and matching headband (yes, headband!), he wanders the Balboa Boardwalk with a football in hand, looking for people to throw it to. Just random people, he picks them out on the beach, catches their eye and tosses that football. He's like a human retriever, always running for that Frisbee, coming back to you panting with it between his teeth. Throw again, throw again! He seeks the next person out. Woof!

Football guy is one of the many characters you can regularly spot along the boardwalk, all eccentric in their own way. The Muscle & Tattoo Guys, Neo-Nazi Freak, Have A Blessed Night Guy, Crazy Bike Man, The Bird Man and Web Bum Guy are some of the others. Up at Venice Beach, there are more characters where people turn out be seen. But these characters aren't making an effort to be seen. They're just part of the regular people landscape, going about what's an ordinary day to them but standing out to those around them.

I have no idea if others notice these people. The names are just how my wife and I refer to them, the exception being the Birdman, who is pictured above. Anyone who lives on the Balboa Peninsula eventually notices him and knows him as the Birdman.

But Football Guy? He's just someone we see wandering all the time. He's been gone for the past week or two, but now he's back.

Muscle & Tattoo Guys match their names, just two guys that you often see with huge muscles and chests covered in tattoos, walking around as if they really think everyone else doesn't believe they're strutting their stuff, but of course, they are.

Neo-Nazi Guy I dislike intensely. He's an older guy, maybe 50, who is often in McFadden Plaza on the weekends. He holds a Bible up and spouts insane comments about Jewish people. Got into an argument with him once. Well, not much of one -- just questioned him on a few of his absurd statements, but he just rolled on as if he was in his own little world -- which he is in, of course.

Have A Blessed Night Guy we often see in the evenings. When you pass him, he calls out, "Have a blessed night." Kind of eccentric but kind of nice.

Crazy Bike Man runs a bike shop at the base of the peninsula. Very helpful, but then again very intense. Park near his shop, and he'll start adjusting your bike just out of the blue, whether it really needs it or not. Then in the evenings, he heads home along the boardwalk, almost as if he's on patrol, looking for anything that seems out of order. He was chasing some kids recently that were riding too fast. I don't think he caught them.

Web Bum Guy is new. He looks drunk most of the time, slowly wandering the boardwalk and often sitting in places. He has a shirt that says something like "Webby Was," which makes me wonder how this dotcom castoff clothing made it to him. A former dotcommer down in luck? A donation that trickled down? Skating past, I often think I should stop and ask. Maybe I should.

I miss Hello Man the most. He was about 40, I'd say -- and despite being a grown man, he clearly wasn't mature mentally. Something was wrong, and he's just wander up and down the boardwalk saying "Hello" to everyone. Few answered him. But if you did, he'd immediately respond. "Thank you very much."

I'd like to think that somewhere out there, Hello Man is still saying "hello" to people and that hopefully, some people are saying "hello" back.

I'm Protesting Proposition 8 Tomorrow; Please Consider Protesting Too

11/15/2008, 05:30 |

Euphoria over Obama's win, followed by disbelief and despair over over Proposition 8's ban on gay marriage passing in California. I'll be out protesting tomorrow at South Coast Plaza in Orange County as part of a nationwide campaign. Please consider going to a location yourself. And if you're against gay marriage, please, some words to consider.

I sat on my patio last weekend listening to my neighbors across the street, in a small party on their roof, discussing Proposition 8. "I don't want them coming to my church to get married," said the most vocal of the bunch. "We don't want to encourage them." And, inevitably as a result of those terrible TV commercials, "We don't want them teaching that in schools."

Ironically, those who voted for Proposition 8 to keep our schools "safe" from the instruction that was never going to happen have now helped guarantee that gay marriage WILL be taught in schools. The struggle won't go away. It's a civil rights movement that will only get stronger, be a part of California history and will be taught to school children from years to come. And years from now, many people will look back on the struggle in the same way they view other civil rights struggles and think, "How could this have been done to a group of people."

Gay marriage is personal to me. "Them" gay people aren't some nebulous group that exists only in San Francisco. They're real people I know, with names like Ken, Jessie, Ted and Greg.

Greg, godfather to my children. One of the best friends you could have. Someone that deserves, if he should want to marry, to have the right to do so.

I simply don't get it. You can fight for your country -- just don't say your gay, and it's OK? And should you die defending your country, sorry -- no folded flag, since you can't have a spouse.

When I heard the news of the loss, one of my first thoughts was that I wanted all the gay people in American to go on strike for a day -- to really illustrate how many there are. Turns out, there's a movement now to make that happen, this Dec. 10, "No Gays For A Day." I hope it happens.

Somewhat related, last weekend, there was a fascinating piece in the Los Angeles Times by Jasmyne Cannick, a Black lesbian, on why she wasn't surprised that Blacks voted so heavily in favor of the proposition. You have to appreciate her honesty, as well as her realism of the challenge:

Even I wasn't inspired to encourage black people to vote against the proposition. Why? Because I don't see why the right to marry should be a priority for me or other black people. Gay marriage? Please. At a time when blacks are still more likely than whites to be pulled over for no reason, more likely to be unemployed than whites, more likely to live at or below the poverty line, I was too busy trying to get black people registered to vote, period; I wasn't about to focus my attention on what couldn't help but feel like a secondary issue.

It's hard. Watching Obama talk about gay marriage as a state issue; watching Biden in the debate with Palin say he was for partnerships but not gay marriage, it was disheartening knowing that was a compromise they had to make, just as Clinton compromised on gays in the military. Obama had challenges enough winning the trust of some in America without having to have support of gay marriage bogging his campaign down, which is almost certainly would have. I understood the compromise. It didn't make the taste less bitter.

So I can understand what Cannick wrote. I can understand, though I can never really feel, the inequalities she describes and has experienced. But if there was a proposition on the ballot that allowed me to deal with those problems? That allowed me to vote for equality? I'd vote for it. I'd hope anyone would vote for it and not think, "No, not until X, Y & Z" are fixed first.

Finally, I'll leave with a video from Keith Olbermann that's been capturing attention, where he speaks succinctly on the issue. Consider that about 1/3 of US states had laws preventing Blacks & Whites from being married as late as 1967 -- and as he notes, Barack Obama's own parents couldn't have been married.

Please consider showing your support at a protest tomorrow. If not tomorrow, then another time, in another way. And please reconsider your position, if you've been against gay marriage. There are real people, with real feelings and desires, who simply want the same rights independent of the fact that they share their love with someone of the same sex.

LG Prada 2 microsite, Bluetooth watch Launched

11/19/2008, 02:39 |

We?ve seen the official specs of the LG Prada 2 already, but since then, we haven?t had any news about this QWERTY-equipped follow-up to the original Prada phone.

That wait is over. LG has now launched an official microsite, reminding us that such a phone still exists. Aside from the phone itself, they also feature an equally stylish Bluetooth watch they so aptly called the Prada Link. We?re guessing it can be used in tandem with the Prada 2 phone so you can control it remotely Dick Tracy-style. There?s also a headset and leather pouch to go along with this branded line, but we?re not exactly sure if its part of the standard package of accessories or if you need to purchase it separately. We?re hoping that it?s the former as opposed to the latter, but at this point, we?re not ready to make any assumptions.

Sadly we have yet to receive confirmation on its final selling price and exact release date. Oh well, a little patience never hurt anyone, but looking at the LG Prada 2’s microsite sure got me interested all of a sudden.

SSDs too expensive? Make your own with Sans Digital's CF Enclosure

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

Sans Digital CF Enclosure - Image 1

If it were easy to get SSDs for our computing gadgets, we would do so in a heartbeat - it's not as susceptible to damage as other storage devices, what with the absence of moving parts and such - but the problem is that SSDs cost a tad too much, with a US 1,000 price tag a pop for each 64GB SSD. But here's the good news: you can actually make your own SSD, and it'll cost you only about US 400.

Here's what you need: Sans Digital's new CR2T Compact Flash card enclosure that is priced at only US 99, and two 32GB Compact Flash cards (CF cards cost about US 150 each). Now, just place the two CF cards in the enclosure, then voila! Instant US 400 64GB SSD.

What's good about Sans Digital's new enclosure is that it gives the users an option between RAID 1 and nRAID settings, whichever works best for their computing needs. Using nRAID sounds like a nice idea - it practically combines the two CF cards into one drive.

Of course, there's a slight downside to it. Compared to a real SSD's uber-fast speed of 100MB per second, a Compact Flash card only reaches about 40MB per second, and that's just about the fastest you can find in the market. But hey, as long as it means that you're going to get a good US 600 savings, its still a good deal.

BlackBerry Bold up for pre-order at Best Buy: 680 smackers

10/28/2008, 02:14 |

We already knew RIM's BlackBerry Bold would sell for a stiff $299.99 on contract with AT&T, but if you're one of the many AT&T users who'd rather not sign a new agreement (or renew your current one), you've probably been patiently waiting to hear an unsubsidized price. Here is it, but we're warning you, you might want to sit down. The contract-free Bold is listed at $679.99 at Best Buy, and fittingly enough, the product page offers a convenient link for seeking financing. At any rate, it also tells us that pre-orders will typically ship out within one to two weeks, though we'd be hesitant to bet the farm on that. After waiting for like, ever, for this handset to finally hit shelves, are you still so anxious to drop nearly seven bills to claim one as your own?

[Thanks, Christen]

Fiio unveils the Shuffle look-a-like E5 headphone amplifier

Fiio has just released the E5, and despite it offering a design very similar to that of the iPod Shuffle it is not a media player but instead a headphone amplifier.  The E5 comes as a replacement to the previous E3, and in turn offers 30-percent more power than the E3.  The E5 has a power output of 150mW at 16? or 12MW to 300? and less than a 0.009-percent distortion at 10mW.  Additionally, the E5 has onboard volume controls (an item that was lacking on the E3) and a built-in battery that should offer around 20 hours of use.  Otherwise the E5 measures 1.73 x 1.50 x 0.48-inches and weighs in at a lightweight 0.92-ounces.  The E5 is currently available and retailing for around $20.

Zune Delivering Real Competition in Portable Media Player Market

09/09/2008, 07:39 |
The new features in the Zune 3.0 release are adding to user options to discover music in new ways. Microsoft Zune research has shown that radio is still being used by the majority of potential users to discover new music. Most people like to have help in discovering new music. The buy from FM feature rated very high in the research and would drive device and service adoption.

The perception that radio is dead is misguided and has been for years now. Many bloggers and major media back in 2004 said, that radio was dead with the invention of Podcasting and that has NOT at all happened. The same is true for music discovery from broadcast radio.

Broadcast radio is still very important (huge audience) and will continue to be so for a very long-time. These new options don?t stop users from using the Zune players as just a digital music player, Zune just takes it to an new level. If the portable media player market is going to grow then there needs to be more ways new potential users can get into the digital music game.

Many may not realize it, but still as of today the majority of people in the USA do not currently own a digital portable media player and these new Zune features are a way of pulling this huge existing radio listening market into the digital music/portable media player market. The other reason to be positive about the Zune features in 3.0 is that it is always good to have competition in this kind of market.

I just don?t see why many bloggers and major media have to keep slamming Zune, even as it continues to innovate in this evolving space. It is still very early days for digital media and portable consumption of that media. Zune does not have to follow Apple to succeed, as I believe that Zune is quickly moving into the leadership position around innovation in social networking digital media discovery, wireless sharing, sync and radio to digital e-commerce.

First-Call Resolution Podcast

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
First-call resolution, as a call center principle, gets a lot of attention, and for very good reason. While 10 different call centers may not agree on their management, hiring, training and technology approaches, all 10 will probably agree that first-call resolution is far and away the most important metric to master. Why? It's a realistic way to achieve increased customer satisfaction at lower operating costs. It cuts out "waste" and gets customer issues resolved quickly. It also improves employee job satisfaction and lowers turnover, for it reduces agent frustration.

It is, however, a complex, multifaceted topic. I recently had a chance to speak with Rob McDougall, president of call center solutions provider Upstream Works (www.upstreamworks.com). Our conversation about implementing first-call resolution in the contact center is available here as a podcast

Happy listening!

Walmart will sell iPhones starting Dec. 28

11/19/2008, 19:00 |

Walmart will be taking a pass for most of the holiday shopping season with one particular item: the iPhone. It will begin selling the handset December 28, according to Jamie Townsend, of research firm JRPG.

Boy Genius Report also notes that the phone will be sold in some Sam's Club stores as well. The blog broke the news about Walmart's talks with Apple, but originally said the smartphone would hit shelves last Saturday.

Walmart seems to be capitalizing on post-holiday shopping fervor, with BGR's Zach Epstein speculating, "Won't people be happy when they find out Apple's handsets popped up at discount prices three short days after Christmas?" It depends on how meager Christmas is, I suppose.

The handsets will apparently be activated in-store. No pricing details were released.
