Cellufun Recruits Keith Katz and Tom Burgess

07/02/2008, 17:05 |

The mobile game and entertainment company Cellufun adds two new executives to its management team. Tom Burgess will sit on the advisory board and Keith Katz will become VP of Marketing. Both new hires are mobile industry veterans and have experience in the entertainment and advertising businesses.

Tom Burgess is an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Battery Ventures. He was the Founder and CEO of Third Screen Media, a mobile advertising network AOL bought in 2007. An executive in online and wireless interactive marketing technology, Mr. Burgess is a pioneer of innovative advertising solutions and holds a patent in wireless advertising. He will assist Cellufun as it develops new advertising models.

“Cellufun’s growth and incredible volume of active subscribers excited me enough to learn more and eventually join the team to bring my mobile advertising and startup growth experience to the table as advisor to the company,” states Tom Burgess. “This company is on an impressive trajectory and I’m happy to be a part of that.”

Keith Katz is the former Head of North American Marketing for mobile gaming company Gameloft. Before that, he worked for Atari in global brand management and had his own startup called Little Upstarts that promotes physical development in infants and toddlers. Mr.Katz also worked for the NFL in brand marketing. Early in his career he worked for Feld Entertainment where he marketed family brands such as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and Disney on Ice. Mr. Katz will develop Cellufun?s brand and market the mobile solution Cellufun provides to service providers, media companies, major brands and advertisers.

“I couldn’t be more excited about joining Cellufun. As someone with a background in both console and mobile video games, I see Cellufun at the epicenter of both worlds. This company is truly unique its ability to entice both very casual and avid gamers to pick up their mobile devices to play games. Cellufun’s offerings have the “stickiness” and community feel of an MMO like World of Warcraft or Second Life that avid gamers crave, but they also possess the “pick up and playability” that many casual Web and mobile game players prefer. These are characteristics that simply don’t exist elsewhere in the mobile world, so a company with a consumer proposition like this is really a marketing person’s dream.”

Paying $599 for iPhone 3G that?s still locked to AT&T

07/05/2008, 19:44 |

iPhone 3G thats still locked
Many current iPhone owners will be happy to upgrade to the 3G iPhone for the obvious improvements and if you are on certain phone plans, it could even mean a free next generation iPhone.

The basic price of an iPhone 2.0 is $199 but you will need to take out a new 2-year contract with AT&T, if you do not want to do that then its going to cost you.

The problem with buying the 3G iPhone with no contract is that you will have to pay $699 for a 16GB and $599 for a 8GB iPhone; although it is the first time the United States has had this option.

What I have trouble with is if the phone is still locked to AT&T, does it make any sense to buy an iPhone 3G with no contract for $599 and still be locked to AT&T?

For people who do not like being tied to contracts and still want Apple?s phone, I guess having that freedom will come at a heavy price. Are you willing to pay it?

PSN director: Home launch will be robust, confirms movie download service launch

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

PlayStation Home - Sony - video game news - Image 1

Last month, Sony's PlayStation Network senior director Susan Pamico remarked that the launch of PlayStation Home this fall will be similar to Gmail's own launch, and that the release will be an open, working beta. Some gamers are worried that the launch may be some half-baked attempt to show something to gamers after so many delays.

PSN Director Eric Lempel clarifies on this though, and it should quiet any fears. Lempel says Home, even in its initial release to the public, will not be presenting the service in its raw form, but rather a fully "robust" service:

If you think about Gmail and Susan s reference, Gmail when it launched in beta was a fully functional email service. I personally was using it and it offered everything you d expect, but was in beta just to say that there s more to come and maybe it s not fully polished.

The reason we ve been delaying [Home] is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it won t be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.

Lempel goes on to talk about the movie download service coming for the PlayStation 3. He does confirm that the service is still a go for launch this Summer in the US, although he can't "speak for the other regions at this time":

I don t have any more specifics right now, but like Kaz [Hirai] said, it will go live [in the US] this summer and I think it will offer consumers everything they re looking for from us. It will offer everything they expect from us and probably a little bit more.

1 euro eBay baby goes home

07/04/2008, 22:37 |
Parents had put their baby boy up for sale on eBay--apparently as a joke--but German authorities didn't find it particularly amusing.

Era-Ender?

07/04/2008, 02:22 |

The more I think about it, the less this is like "slip-sliding into a recession" than "End of an Era."

Starbucks Corp. on Tuesday effectively ended its era of blanket expansion by saying it will close 500 more locations in the U.S. and cut 7% of its work force.

Starbucks -- IPO 1992 -- is as much a symbol of our times as Netscape or Google. Or as Toys R Us or McDonald's of theirs. Which will it end up resembling more? Onward.

07/03/2008, 03:37 |

You've likely seen this by now but I've got to link it up anyway because whenever I think about it, it makes me LOLL (laugh out loud, literally). The American Family Association automatically replaces words like "gay" with "homosexual" in the AP stories they display on their news site. When an American sprinter named Tyson Gay is in the news, the practice leads to hilarity.

Homosexual eases into 100 final at Olympic trials
Tyson Homosexual easily won his semifinal for the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials and seemed to save something for the final later Sunday.

And on it goes..."On Saturday, Homosexual misjudged the finish in his opening heats...", "Homosexual runs wind-aided 9.68 seconds to make Olympics...", "Close call: Homosexual barely averts major flop in 100..." Fox News has applied the same technique to stories about suicide bombers...they changed all instances of that term to "homicide bombers".

Wii Web Server alpha v0.73 - security patch, enhanced filename support

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

Wii Web Server alpha v0.73 - Image 1

Though mostly bugfixes dot the changes for Wii Web Server alpha version 0.73, homebrew developers Cboomf and Felix 123 attempted to make the server software less vulnerable to exploits. And you'll need it, for with alpha v0.73 you'll also get added file support for binary files.

Unless you're running the Nintendo Wii as a full-on, public Web server, this may be one little concern to you. But some malware programs running on your LAN could cause the software to crash, and therefore, stall the Wii. Sometimes, you'd be lucky if the bug only stalled the machine.

Just to be safe, update to the latest build and gain some new support for the HEAD method for HTTP, plus the ability to load HTML pages with spaces in their filenames. Other changes include:
  • Security bugfixes
  • Fixed disallowance of ../ or ./ for security
  • Server sends server version in header
As with previous versions of Wii Web Server, you can execute the software via the Homebrew Channel (your best bet), or with a homebrew launcher, if your technical prowess is up for it. Feel free to probe the Wii Web Server for other potential security holes, but take note that additions will come when they're ready.

Seeing The Queen At Larkhill

06/12/2008, 16:30 |

Almost as if to wish me off, Queen Elizabeth II came to visit today. OK, she came to the nearby Larkhill artillery school, which is now being redesignated the Royal Artillery Barracks. A bunch of school kids were invited to witness the opening, and our youngest's son's class went. So why not -- let's take the morning to see the Queen!

I took both a digital camera and a digital movie camera -- and had left the memory cards out of them by accident. Sigh. So everything I shot was off my cell phone. Still, it'll give you an idea of the morning.

Mozilla Firefox 3.0 enters Guinness World of Records

07/03/2008, 12:32 |

A few weeks back we were all rushing to our computers to download Firefox 3.0 from Mozilla, and none of us could have imagined how popular the new Web Browser was going to be.

Well Mozilla must have known something, as they had asked there users to try and make them hold the record for the most software downloads in 24 hours.

The thing was at the time the Guinness World Records had no such record, but Mozilla had campaigned to allow this new record.

Well it now seems that Guinness officials have decided to accept Mozilla?s final count of 8,002,530 downloads for Firefox 3.0 in 24 hours. We can now say that Firefox 3.0 is a record holder.

When Mozilla launched their latest Web Browser last month, at their busiest time their servers had to handle at least 9,000 downloads per minute.

The previous version of Firefox had 1.6 million downloads in 24 hours; version 3.00 beat that in just 5 hours.

Wireless Sharing of Video Podcasts in Zune 2.5 Update

06/01/2008, 23:16 |
Here is a little known COOL new feature to the Zune Podcast support in the recent 2.5 firmware update. This feature is REVOLUTIONARY and I am surprised that it has not been blogged about before now, but you can now send video podcast episodes to other Zune devices using its built-in WiFi radio. This means that if you have found a cool episode from the Best of YouTube podcast that you can send it to a fellow Zune user and then that user can watch that episode on their device and subscribe to it all in the Zune device software. While the video podcast episode is playing - just click and hold the middle of the Zune touch pad until the subscribe screen pops up. Then click on "subscribe" and when you next sync your Zune it will add a new subscription to your "Collection" area. I think that is way cool and nothing you can do in an iPod.

FrontlineSMS: The NGO Twitter?

06/30/2008, 19:41 |

FrontlineSMS Application

So there’s Twitter - a social crowd control tool that by chance just grew into that sort of thing.

Here’s something similar in effect but different in execution: FrontlineSMS is a desktop client that resembles a good mass SMS client that’s specifically meant for keeping a huge number of people up to date with activities. FrontlineSMS has been used mostly by NGOs in elections, event organizing, updating students with school curricula, and the like. The possibilities are varied with your fully customizable campaign. Best of all, the client is free!

at home in Barcelona

02/04/2008, 19:38 |

I wanted to mention that I am feeling at home in the whole territory of EU and I don’t feel “foreigner” anywhere inside of EU - whether it is Finland or Spain. So next week in Barcelona I will feel at home very much so.

In practice it means that I could move and live permanently in any place inside of EU, but I lived already in Italy - similarly warm country as Spain - so Spain is too warm for me, and thus not an option for me.

But who knows, I never say never. Which reminds me: I must plan/book my visit in Ireland next month…

Microsoft to Acquire Mobile-Data Company

06/28/2008, 13:49 |
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-9978036-36.html

"Microsoft announced Thursday it has made plans to acquire MobiComp, a mobile-data company founded in 2000. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed... The acquisition will be used to bolster a number of services on the Windows Mobile smartphone platform as well as the Windows Live Web services division. MobiComp has developed an array of products: MobileKeeper Backup & Restore, MobileKeeper Sharing & Communities, and Active mTicker. They're used by companies to back up data stored on mobile phones, submit content from mobile phones to social networks like Facebook, and access news and other mobile media."

It is interesting to see Microsoft suddenly paying more attention than usual to the mobile services market. With their recent purchasing of Sidekick maker Danger and now MobiComp it looks as though Microsoft has plans up their proverbial sleeve to start rolling out more integrated mobile services to their Windows Mobile and Windows Live product lines. Hopefully we will find out more of what Microsoft has planned as the month slowly start ticking down to the release of Windows Mobile 7.
