We gonna move it!

11/13/2008, 15:48 |

Of those things I look for is actually the school holidays where block buster movies will be up for my viewing galore and me try to lavish my taste buds for cartoons. What you expect, I’m a Peter Pan. Men are just big boys with their toys. Never grew up.

Of which, this caught my eye: Madagascar, where Chris Rock and Sasha Bohen (Ali G) starred in them with a load full of character. But then, one thing though stuck to my mind, my little girl, Athira , is more colorful and ever damaged the DVD player just for her MADAGASCAR Movie. It’s time to MOVE IT.

Oh ya..tell that to my sister and mom and dad which she really took a piss at em Nan and Gramps mainly because she will dance like she’s on a tranz and sing to the We Gonna Move It Move It, jingle. Or mostly because she hogs the telly away from her Gramp which is a couch potato cum couch warcraft and command and conquer couch.

Well, I am missing her annoying the heck of me..with her silly antics and hopefully her mom will let her have a stint at the cinema so she can have a memorable time for her forth birthday.

Happy birthday darling. Oh ya..you did try to squeeze yourself out on the 19th, but decided otherwise. Typical child of mine.

Love you both

Haw haw: Static-charged balloon foils security camera

08/01/2008, 18:30 |

lamson1

Ah, William Lawson of Brooklyn, New York, you are a smart guy. I can only hope that your balloon trick shows up in future iterations of the Splinter Cell series. I?m getting tired of shooting the cameras out with a pistol. It wastes bullets, it?s dangerous, and it?s impractical for Sam Fisher to have to poke his head out just to aim at a target he could very easily disable with a little bit of static electricity. Perhaps he can start to carry a bag of balloons, string, and a large helium tank with him wherever he goes.

Blizzard introduces Blizzard Authenticator for enhanced WoW security

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
An extra precaution for your WoW Account - Image 1Here's something special for our World of Warcraft readers out in Europe. Blizzard is introducing what you could call an optional layer of security for your World of Warcraft account through a new product they've come out with, called the Blizzard Authenticator.

Think of it as a key with ever-changing teeth that fit into an ever-changing lock meant specifically for you. Here's a brief description of the new product straight from the press release:

Designed to attach to a keychain, the lightweight and waterproof Blizzard Authenticator is an electronic device that generates a six-digit security code at the press of a button. This code is unique, valid only once, and active for a limited time; it must be provided along with the account name and password when signing in to the World of Warcraft account linked to it.

The Blizzard Authenticator will be available at Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational from June 28-29 (in France, no less) and will retail for 6 Euro (US 9). It'll also be made available from Blizzard's European websites in the near future for 6 Euro plus shipping.

UPDATE: It looks as if it'll be available in America too. There's an FAQ for the Blizzard Authenticator on the US Blizzard website. We've linked to it below, in case you want to know more about the nifty gadget.

Photobucket Mobile Uploader Released for Verizon subscribers

11/17/2008, 22:17 |

Verizon and Ontela have worked together to produce a mobile uploader for Photobucket, one of the world’s oldest photo uploading tools on the Internet. Signing up is easy, as all you need to do is use your existing Photobucket account and link to your Verizon phone line:

To utilize the application, Verizon Wireless subscribers sign up for a Photobucket account ? which can be created for free at http://photobucket.com ? and enter their log-in information to link their Verizon Wireless account to their Photobucket online photo album. Once the accounts are connected, the application instantly uploads photos already saved on the phone to the user?s Photobucket account. The Photobucket Mobile Uploader then automatically sends any future photos directly to the same Photobucket account. [release]

The service will be available for 13 handsets on the Verizon network, and we’re assuming that these are the faster 3G / HSDPA phones. The service allows for unlimited photo uploading for only $2.99 a month.

Looking At the Competition: The Blackberry Bold

11/14/2008, 12:09 |

Being so heavily Windows Mobile-centric, I find it interesting when I can get my hands on devices from companies that compete with Windows Mobile. I had an opportunity to play with a RIM Blackberry Bold earlier this week, and was extremely impressed with the hardware. I thought it might be useful to share what I thought was good about the Bold, if for no other reason than to point out to anyone from Microsoft, HTC, etc. reading this site that Windows Mobile devices are lacking somewhat in the area that the Bold inhabits.

The 2.66 inch, 320 x 480 screen was simply gorgeous - very crisp, with great contrast. It made everything look excellent - I think the Blackberry OS, for all its faults, gets many things right on the home screen - the indicator icons on Windows Mobile are huge in comparison, so even by making them smaller, things look sharper and more organized on the Blackberry home screen. The keyboard felt really good, although I thought the width of the device was a bit much - it's closer to the Motorola Q9h in width, while I prefer the more slender Blackjack II. Not a deal-breaker though, I'd put up with the extra width to get that screen. Device thickness and weight were reasonable.

Performance was very snappy - apps just flew, screens appeared and vanished quickly. I've always felt that other Blackberry models had a nice home screen, but looked like pagers once you dug a layer deeper, but the Bold has a pretty good second level as well. Video playback was very impressive as well - there was a Speed Racer sample clip that looked amazing, the best I've seen on a mobile device in a long time. The media player software was pretty weak though - it was a combination of VCR-like buttons and a DOS-like directory listing of videos. I'm spoiled by how fun and easy media browsing is on my Zune, and everything else pales in comparison.

I could only sigh as I heard my friend explain that he leaves WiFi turned on all the time, and still gets 2-3 days of heavy use out of it, because the WiFi is smart enough to stay in a super low power mode until it detects he comes home, then it connects WiFi and uses that rather than 3G. When he leaves the house, it seamlessly moves back to 3G. Now that's smart software! There were certainly parts of the software that screamed "I used to be wireless pager software!", but RIM has done a pretty good job sprucing up the look and feel of the operating system.

Oh yeah, it didn't have a high-gloss back that attracted smudges (are you listening HTC?). It really is a great hardware design. I'm sure if I spent a week using it I'd see more flaws in the software and hardware, but I have to say that as first impressions go, the Bold makes a good one - and first impressions are generally what sell phones to the public. I can't think of any Windows Mobile device that comes close to matching the Bold in terms of hardware, and that's really unfortunate.

I'm convinced that HTC in particular is so fixated on beating Apple in the touch game, that even though they don't have a great touch-friendly operating system to work with (Windows Mobile Professional is still far too stylus-based), they're ignoring the popular consumer market that RIM is making big inroads into now. When I hear a 25-year old female friend gush about how much she loves her new Blackberry Curve, a device I'd always perceived as a business device, I know there's a missing piece in Microsoft's consumer strategy - a very big piece. RIM has somehow pivoted with their product strategy just enough to allow the carriers to heavily promote Blackberry devices as being consumer devices, and based mostly on nice hardware design, consumers are buying Blackberry devices in big numbers. Microsoft and their hardware partners have to come up with a solution to this problem - and a good start would be a device that competes head-on with the Blackberry Bold and wins.

The Sony DR-BT160AS Bluetooth Active Style Headphones popped up on Giz a few months back, and they looked promising if a bit odd, streaming stereo A2DP audio while packing a rechargeable lithium ion battery and a microphone for calls. But we had no pricing or availability information. Now, through the magic of press releases, we know that the headphones are available now for "approximately $130." That's not the most reassuring pricing announcement we've ever seen, but we'll take what we can get. [Sony]

Cell Phone Prices

10/09/2008, 22:53 |

There are many things to consider before you a purchase a cell phone. One major consideration for most consumers is the price of the cell phone.

Understandably, cell phones that have very few “bells and whistles” will cost much less than a mobile phone that also serves as an MP3 player, a video camera, a camera and has a full QWERTY keyboard, although sometimes you can pick these phones up for relatively cheap if the wireless carrier is offering incentives or rebates.

What’s not included in the price of most cell phones is the wireless service to make phone calls and send text messages. Wireless plans can vary from prepaid accounts which allow subscribers to pay as they go (or use minutes) to family calling plans that offer multiple handsets for family members with a calling plan that covers all the mobile phones in the family.

You can buy a cheap prepaid cell phone at most large retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target and even some smaller drug stores. Convenient and cheap, prepaids are a popular choice for those that aren’t “heavy users.”

My advice is, check cell phone prices before you buy. Since it’s a buyer’s market, chances are you can find a better price if you search vendors before buying.

Mean People Suck

01/09/2008, 18:46 |

Yep, we all know that. So that’s all I have to say about that.

But what about the opposite. Nice people don’t suck. In fact, when you meet nice/good people make sure you value that relationship. I have a really good exaple about a great person and one who I am really glad to call a friend.

Andrew Hyde

That cat is Andrew Hyde. Last week I was supposed to meet Andrew to kick around his business plan/idea (which is really cool btw). Unfortunately on the bike ride up from Denver to Boulder, I hit a patch of ice south of town, slid into an intersection, and tagged a car. I didn’t get hurt too bad but dinged my bike up a bit. I showed up to the Trident coffee shop way late and Andrew had left already.

When I told Andrew what happened and that I was about to leave the coffee shop, Andrew was just concerned about me! In fact, Andrew drove over. On the way, he saw me waiting for the bus, picked me up, and drove me home. We had a great conversation on the ride home, and I am really glad to have such a kick ass friend. Thanks Andrew!

[On a side note, if you are thinking about funding Andrew’s new business, do it. Andrew is guaranteed to be successful - just look at what he’s done with Startup Weekend.]

Asus Eee Stick filed in the FCC Exhibits Report

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

Asus Eee Stick - Image 1

The Wii's definitely not alone now in the motion-sensing crowd, now that the Asus is going to include a familiar-looking peripheral to its Eee line of products. At least, that's what the latest find in the Federal Communications Commission says in the FCC exhibits list, which is a pair of Nunchuck-looking peripherals dubbed as the "Eee Stick."

We've had both Sony and Microsoft considering creating a motion-sensing controller for their own consoles; what does the Eee Stick offer for the Asus Eee? The report doesn't specify how it's actually going to be used in conjunction with the ultraportable laptop, but we now know that the package will include two controllers.

One of them has an analog stick and another has a D-pad. It will also include the necessary CD software to get it running, a USB dongle - and yes, even wrist straps.

We're actually pleased to see the diminutive, functional Eees get their own line of accessories, but will using a pair of motion-sensing controllers be actually useful for an ultraportable laptop aside from, say, using them for work presentations? Let's see what kind of punch the Eee Sticks pack when they finally get to see the light of day.

Square Enix lists playables and trailers for August party

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Square Enix's List of games - Image 1More details have come in today regarding Square Enix' upcoming party in August.

While we may already know what games are going to be shown at
DKΣ3713, we previously didn't know which ones would actually be playable. Now, it's time to change that.

Of the various games listed, it seems only the PSP and DS games will be getting demos. Yes folks, that unfortunately means that Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and Final Fantasy Agito XIII will only be getting trailers.

However, it does mean that Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Sigma Harmonics will be getting playable demos at the party.

The full list can be found in the picture that comes with this article, with the projector icon indicating a trailer for the game and the little PSP icon denoting a playable demo. The single game in Japanese characters refers to Sigma Harmonics.

Great line-up eh? Unfortunately, the event is a private affair with only 2,400 guests invited to the party. That means media coverage of the trailers and demos aren't allowed. Bummer. Still, we hope to get some great updates from the event, so stay tuned.

MySpace suicide court case begins

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

Section: Web, Websites

Ms DrewThis story has all the makings of a tragic soap: a vulnerable love sick teenager, a sick vengeful adult and death.  Unfortunately this story is not confined to the pages of a book, but is a reality that took place in October 2006 and resulted in Megan Meier, aged 13 at the time, taking her own life.  But why did she do it?  What had happened before?  Who caused it?  And what does this have to do with technology?

It all started when Megan fell out with the daughter of her neighbor Ms Drew in St Louis, prompting Ms Drew to take it upon herself to spite Megan.  She did this by creating a fictitious 16 year old boy, Josh Evans, who lived in the local area which she did by creating a fake MySpace account.  This was then used to contact the unassuming Megan, and create a friendship, although the implication is that Megan believed it to be more serious than that.

But why would she do this?  The idea was to get back at Megan by then breaking up the virtual relationship, which of course would cause harm to Megan—the aim of the whole scheme.  However the comments were incredibly harsh, including one that said the world would be better of without her and a distraught Megan took her own life.  Now, Ms. Drew is on trial under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, something only previously used against computer hackers but the only law in Missouri that the prosecutors could take her to court for.

Although she is not being directly charged with the death of Megan (the judge had considered this, but later dismissed the idea of excluding suicide evidence) she could still end up with a 5 year prison sentence.  However this will end up being a very gray area, as Dean Steward the defense lawyer believes “The jury is going to end up thinking that Lori Drew is being tried for the death of Megan Meier. .  .“  Nevertheless, there is still a chance that the jury will take this into account regardless, which although is not ideal, it could result in a full 5 year sentence.

So what can we learn?  Firstly that there are bad people out there, and that we are in danger of becoming immune to this threat because of the amount that it is publicized.  Perhaps the teens of today don’t care what adults say and will go out of their way do to the opposite, but we must remember that they are still vulnerable and that social networking can be dangerous.  So if you are considering getting back at an ex, a hated enemy or an irritating boss, remember that it is not hard to track this kind of thing.

User generated dialog with the President-Elect

11/08/2008, 22:57 |

Presidential candidate Barack Obama reached out to the smart mobs in new and effective ways that contributed significantly to his victory. It seems inevitable that the crowd will now be eager to direct its wisdom into his administration. Here is a pioneering project in that venue: BigDialog: Ask the President-Elect is a post-election method to keep the public participating in the governing by the new President. In a techPresident post — White House 2.0: The Public is Knocking on the Door – Micah Sifry sketches the project. Here are some basics for harnessing of this here comes everybody method:

[The projects] seek to crowd-source the process of putting pressing questions before the President-elect and identifying the top priorities of the public. . . .

The site builds on our experience during the primaries with 10Questions.com and is designed to take video and text questions for the President-elect and then enable users to vote the best questions to the top. If we manage to get the President-elect to respond, users will then get the opportunity to rate his responsiveness.

Mobile Data Revolution Brought to you by Apple

Admob just published their October metrics report. First, I should say - congratulations to Admob. They are at nearly SIX BILLION (5.8 billion to be exact) ad requests per month. That's a huge number compared to where they were a year ago. And, they don't represent the entire market.

There's a lot more mobile web browsing going on than they see. And what is crazy - or not so crazy - is that the majority of it is still on your basic feature phone. An astonishing four percent IS on iPhones. You have to go down to #10 on the list to get to another mid-sized device with a larger than average screen. The RAZR ranks #2. This creates an interesting development dilemma for content providers, but more on that later.

Page three of the report is dedicated to the impact of the iPhone on the market. It's definitely worth a read. I won't steal their thunder by listing all the highlights here. Topline - they had nearly 150 million requests from iPhones in the US alone. The requests about doubled between end of September and end of October. (Can't wait to see Apple/AT&T's Q4 earnings ... how many of these devices are you guys selling?)

How about 17 percent of ad requests coming out of Mexico coming from the iPhone? Can't remember which carrier Apple launched with there. T-Mobile won't tell me how much they are pricing iPhone data plans at in the US. (Kidding)

Admob and this industry are just getting started. Apple announced 200 million downloads a couple of weeks back. They haven't said what percentage are paid and what percentage are free. Let's assume the majority are free (I'll use myself and go with a sample size of n=1). There is a tremendous audience there that will likely be served ads in the future to support the free download model. Admob has some cool ad formats they've developed for the iPhone that we're just starting to see. Their report sites 400 iPhone apps and sites currently being served. I expect to see the traffic from iPhones continue to increase as more applications use their product.

The Safari browser on the iPhone is great, etc., but I only use it as a last resort if there isn't a widget or app that will get me what I need.

This is getting to be pretty exciting. Stay tuned.
