Stem-Cell Trachea Transplant Sets New Treatment Standard

11/19/2008, 17:54 |
Doctors have given a woman a new windpipe with tissue grown from her own stem cells, eliminating the need for antirejection drugs. "This technique has great promise," said Eric Genden, MD, who did a similar transplant in 2005 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. That operation used both donor and recipient tissue. Only a handful of windpipe, or trachea, transplants have ever been done. If successful, the procedure could become a new standard of treatment, said Genden, who was not involved in the research.

Designed with premium materials and customizable illumination, the 6650 features a sharp 2.2-inch display with QVGA (16 million colors) resolution.

It has external audio playback keys, external soft keys and a 1.36-inch display that captures photos, controls music and changes profile settings without ever having to open the device. "Nokia created this device for the thriving consumer appetite for navigation, multimedia and entertainment essentials in one stylish, affordable package," said Ian Laing, Vice President of Sales at Nokia. "We are excited to introduce this device, built on the most open and mature mobile platform in the world, to AT&T."

Adobe Flash Coming to Windows Mobile

11/19/2008, 01:59 |
http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2008/11...-on-the-iphone/

"Adobe’s Flash Player is on 98 percent of all desktop computers, but it is still struggling to make the jump to mobile phones. If you want Flash on a mobile device, right now you have to settle for a compromised version: Flash Lite. But Adobe is committed to bring the full Flash Player experience to mobile phones, as evidenced by its Open Screen Project. On Monday, at its Adobe MAX developer conference, it will demonstrate Flash Player 10 running on a Windows Mobile phone. (However, Flash won’t actually ship on Windows Mobile until late next year)."

Adobe MAX has come and gone and during that time Adobe has announced that would release Flash technology to the Windows Mobile platform and even demonstrated versions of Flash running on Windows Mobile and Google Android. It is really interesting to see Flash running on Google's Android platform as these handsets are virtually brand spanking new. It is amazing to see how quickly big name companies such as Adobe are jumping on consumer smartphone bandwagon since the release of the Apple iPhone and Google Android platforms. Sometimes I wish Microsoft could inspire that kind of innovation and excitement in the mobile industry. It is an incredibly exciting time to be a smartphone user, no matter which device or operating system is in your pocket. However I am still annoyed that it has taking this long for Adobe to get around to bringing Flash to our handsets.

Desktop vs. Web

01/11/2008, 06:21 |

Every now and again the debate stirs up over the merits of desktop vs. web based software. The debate ends here! And the answer is simple - it’s both!

My co-worker and friend, Nick Bradbury, sums it up in one line:

“PS: As I’ve written before, I think the so-called battle between web and desktop apps is overblown. It’s a hybrid world, not an either-or situation.”

Cell Phone Prices

10/09/2008, 22:53 |

There are many things to consider before you a purchase a cell phone. One major consideration for most consumers is the price of the cell phone.

Understandably, cell phones that have very few “bells and whistles” will cost much less than a mobile phone that also serves as an MP3 player, a video camera, a camera and has a full QWERTY keyboard, although sometimes you can pick these phones up for relatively cheap if the wireless carrier is offering incentives or rebates.

What’s not included in the price of most cell phones is the wireless service to make phone calls and send text messages. Wireless plans can vary from prepaid accounts which allow subscribers to pay as they go (or use minutes) to family calling plans that offer multiple handsets for family members with a calling plan that covers all the mobile phones in the family.

You can buy a cheap prepaid cell phone at most large retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target and even some smaller drug stores. Convenient and cheap, prepaids are a popular choice for those that aren’t “heavy users.”

My advice is, check cell phone prices before you buy. Since it’s a buyer’s market, chances are you can find a better price if you search vendors before buying.

Hack together a nine-cell battery for the MSI Wind

08/01/2008, 17:00 |

mini-CIMG5448

If you?re not yet turned off by MSI?s recent price hikes or you have a three-cell version of the Wind already, a post over in the MSI Wind Forums details how to turn the small-ish three-cell battery into a whopping nine-cell battery.

It looks relatively easy if you?re really determined, although I?d likely not attempt anything that involved slicing the battery open with a box cutter. Finding the extra six cells to add to the standard three cells might be a bit difficult, too, as the forum poster simply says that he was able to ?get a source of the same batteries that are in the Wind? but doesn?t detail how the rest of us could get our hands on those batteries.

If you?re the daring type, though, here?s a brief overview of the process.

First, you open up the front side of the battery using a small flathead screwdriver to pry each end apart. Opening the back side is more tricky and requires slicing a series of tabs off with a box cutter (?they?re obviously not meant to be separated?). Then, the dividers inside the battery casing are all removed to make way for the six extra cells that?ll be added.

mini-CIMG5445

Then, you have to finagle the metal tabs into making contact with the four cells on each of the outside corners of the battery pack. If you can manage to do all that without destroying your battery or hurting yourself, it looks like you?ll be able to squeeze out over seven hours of use.

Much more detailed instructions can be found here.

Virgin Mobile USA lays off 10% of staff

11/17/2008, 21:50 |

Citing “duplication of assignments”, Virgin Mobile USA has announced that they have laid off 45 employees from their New Jersey and California offices, which works out to about 10% of their workforce.

This comes just months after Virgin Mobile purchased post-paid MVNO Helio for $39 million. The terms of that deal already entailed a whole lot of cuts to the Helio team, and I’d imagine that today’s announcement means more jobs lost by that camp.

Internet generation jurors used to screens

11/08/2008, 20:01 |

The Lord Chief Justice of the UK legal system has opined that “it might be better to present information for young jurors on screens because that is how they were used to digesting information.” The Telegraph reported the concern in an article titled Web-savvy young make bad jurors because they cannot listen, says Lord Chief Justice. Here is more from the article:

Currently information is provided on screens to jurors, such as in complex fraud trials, but “not without difficulty and with great expense”, he said.

He added: “What about the defendant’s oral testimony and child witness complaining of an indecent assault which the defendant adamantly denies?

“What process aimed at finding the truth between them, and enabling a jury to decide where the truth lies, will be in place in 25 years time? What will happen to our oral tradition? Should it, will it, be forced to change?”

Lord Judge also conceded that it was inevitable some jurors defy a judge’s direction and make “private enquiries” into a case using the internet. In one case a juror went online using a Blackberry-device during a rape case, causing the conviction to be quashed.

Lord Judge said that he did not have solutions to these concerns. But he suggested that in the future the courts system must be “capable of development and adaptable for the future”.

How Google supposes who has the flu

11/12/2008, 23:12 |

Google has been making headlines recently with its new Online Flu Tracker which, as the Fox News story says today, “will help U.S. federal health experts track the annual flu epidemic.” The new Flu Trends page at Google describes how the tracker works, and includes this explanation:

Each week, millions of users around the world search for online health information. As you might expect, there are more flu-related searches during flu season, more allergy-related searches during allergy season, and more sunburn-related searches during the summer. You can explore all of these phenomena using Google Trends. But can search query trends provide an accurate, reliable model of real-world phenomena?

We have found a close relationship between how many people search for flu-related topics and how many people actually have flu symptoms. Of course, not every person who searches for “flu” is actually sick, but a pattern emerges when all the flu-related search queries from each state and region are added together. We compared our query counts with data from a surveillance system managed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and discovered that some search queries tend to be popular exactly when flu season is happening. By counting how often we see these search queries, we can estimate how much flu is circulating in various regions of the United States.

Greatest projector / iPhone clone combo handset in the world now up for sale

10/28/2008, 17:44 |

Look, here's what you need to do: reach into the appropriate pocket on your personage, take out your phone, and throw it into the nearest wall. It sucks. The N70 from Lanye (or ChinaKing, or... somebody from China), which we've drooled over previously, is a candybar phone with a 2.4-inch screen, Bluetooth 2.0, and a little bit of dual-band GSM. Oh, and a built-in projector. And an interface that almost perfectly mirrors that of the iPhone with the addition of voice recording and MMS. It's awesome, and it's now available for import for a mere $345. A bargain at any price.

[Thanks, Andrew]

Rumor: Quad-core iMacs

11/19/2008, 20:00 |

It's not even December, yet Macworld rumors are starting to fly. Digital Times is reporting that Apple is among the vendors ready to use Intel's new 65W low-power desktop CPUs, specifically designed for all-in-one computers. The lower heat output makes these great little chips for the iMac.

Additionally, these chips would come with a faster bus, and even run a bit cheaper than the dual core chips Apple is currently using - the 2.33GHz, 2.66GHz and 2.83GHz chips cost $245, $320 and $369, respectively, according to Digital Times.

The iMac has been the star of many Macworld keynote speeches, and we expect the same this year. See you in January!

Square Enix lists playables and trailers for August party

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Square Enix's List of games - Image 1More details have come in today regarding Square Enix' upcoming party in August.

While we may already know what games are going to be shown at
DKΣ3713, we previously didn't know which ones would actually be playable. Now, it's time to change that.

Of the various games listed, it seems only the PSP and DS games will be getting demos. Yes folks, that unfortunately means that Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and Final Fantasy Agito XIII will only be getting trailers.

However, it does mean that Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Sigma Harmonics will be getting playable demos at the party.

The full list can be found in the picture that comes with this article, with the projector icon indicating a trailer for the game and the little PSP icon denoting a playable demo. The single game in Japanese characters refers to Sigma Harmonics.

Great line-up eh? Unfortunately, the event is a private affair with only 2,400 guests invited to the party. That means media coverage of the trailers and demos aren't allowed. Bummer. Still, we hope to get some great updates from the event, so stay tuned.

Coming to a Digital Library Near You

Do you know about the National Science Digital Library (NSDL)? You should, no matter what your field or occupation within science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (so visit http://nsdl.org/about). Why?
