Carnival of the Mobilists Smart Mobs Tent

11/10/2008, 22:39 |

This week’s 149th Carnival of the Moblists is hosted by Mark Hooft at Ubiquitous Thoughts. The Carnivals showcase high quality posts of the week by mobilist bloggers and this week included:

. . . recent Presidential Elections [were] discussed in various posts on the SmartMob blog, including a ?Smart Guide to the U.S. Elections? by Mark Kramer and Judy Breck?s analysis ?Why this Presidential election is historic? In fact, it seems that public participation in the government (post-election) is increasingly facilitated by web-based (and mobile) technologies, as is discussed in ?User generated dialog with the President-Elect.?

Conventions and Expos

11/12/2008, 10:59 |

Last week have been a near hell week for me, as I had to run about between my operations offices, factories and clients in preparation of the Single District Single Industry (Satu Daerah Satu Industry) where everyone from the whole Malaysia gather about in Ayer Keroh Melaka and display and show off their products and goods at the MITC Expo Hall.

First off, the organiser done a good job but less to be said of their contractors and staff alike. Power lines and connections are not up, NO WiFi for us in the whole hall, and poor Wireless Cellular Broadband connectivity be it Celcom or Maxis alike. Signage were wrong, with the stickers up at the wrong booths.

And that we could only move in using the back loading bay doors about after dark. Ouch! Wiring was still messy. Never mind.

But then, the convention had under estimated the number of participants in the hall. Catered for just over 300 people, regional district offices booked just for about 400 odd people and the MITC Ancasa Hotel could only cater for less than half of that. Some are placed all over, like the Kings hotel and making thinsg even worse was the weekend, with Singaporeans flocking Malacca during the school holiday.

So, what happens next is a standard norm. 4 or even 7 people cramped and camped into a single double bed hotel room. No extra mattress or pillows, many had to make do with the carpeted floors. ME? I was ready. Darn right ready for this as it’s a standard for Malaysian expos, as it’s how the arrangements were during MIHAS or even others.

What is the after effect? Well, think of it as when I got too pissed off and woke up in the Guard Room or the Police Lock up cells. Hard flooring and full of mites. YES! Mites and Cockroaches flock the place.

Silly, and thus I got a nasty ache in my ear and a nasty bite on the ear lobes. Must be a mite I thought and so the antiseptic don’t seem to work. One reason is….dust mites don’t bite… Cockroaches does.

So, remind me to find my own accommodation ahead of time. And avoid any expos outside my own working area. At least I could sleep in the factory storeroom or something like that.

No Surprise Here: PFF Blasts Jammie Thomas Judge For His Mistrial Call

11/19/2008, 02:33 |
We've written plenty of times about the so-called "think tank" the Progress & Freedom Foundation. The group, which has called itself a "free market" think tank appears to be anything but free market when it comes to intellectual property issues. For years, it's been a huge supporter of increasingly strengthening gov't granted monopolies, often resorting to highly questionable arguments, such as suggesting that fair use harms innovation and that the DMCA shouldn't be changed because that would be gov't meddling in the free market -- ignoring, of course, that the DMCA itself is actually meddling in the free market. For years, the face of PFF's twisted claims on copyright was Patrick Ross, who then moved on to become a lobbyist for the entertainment industry (basically cementing what he was already doing at PFF with a more direct relationship). We thought it would be difficult to find someone who could twist arguments quite as much as Ross did, but PFF surprised us and went one step further.

It hired Tom Sydnor, who made quite a splash by writing one of the most ridiculous attack dog papers we've seen, taking a bunch of Larry Lessig comments completely out of context to accuse him of being a communist sympathizer. It was pure McCarthyism. The worst was when a variety of others pointed out Sydnor's out of context comments and put them back in context -- and Sydnor still stood by the paper, refusing to admit he took a single comment out of context. The truth was that it was difficult to find a single comment that was accurately portrayed.

Based on this, I tend to be immediately extra skeptical of anything that comes out of PFF (Adam Thierer's work is usually good, but that seems the exception). Sydnor's latest is an attack on the judge in the Jammie Thomas trial for declaring a mistrial in her case for wrongly instructing the jury that simply making a file available should be considered infringement. As the judge realized (correctly, in our opinion, and the opinion of plenty of legal experts) this was a "manifest error of law." For copyright infringement to occur a copy needs to be made. Simply making something available is not making an infringing copy. In typical Sydnor fashion, not only does he claim that the judge was wrong, he makes the judge out to be totally off the reservation in making such a ruling, claiming that the judge "misread or disobeyed precedents, federal treaties, scholarly reviews and the three branches of government."

Sydnor, of course, conveniently ignores pretty much everything on the other side, including precedents, scholarly reviews and the three branches of government (not international treaties for the most part, since the relevant ones have all been written by the legacy industry -- so indeed, they agree with Sydnor's assessment, but that's hardly compelling). The fact is that there have been folks who have weighed in on both sides, and there have been widespread legal rulings on both sides of the "making available" issue, as well as scholarly reviews. In fact, William Patry, a much more widely recognized and respected copyright expert than Sydnor, has written extensively on the issue, and seems to disagree with what Sydnor repeatedly claims is "inarguable."

More importantly, the recent trend has been quite clear: most of the courts recently taking up the issue have realized how little sense it is to accuse someone of copyright infringement when no copy has been shown to have been made. There are some exceptions, certainly, but most of the cases these days seem to be going against Sydnor's interpretation, which hardly makes it "inarguable" or as crazy as the paper makes out. Sydnor's decision to take some comments out of context, and then ignore the weight of the arguments on the other side, in order to paint the judge in this case as some sort of clueless rogue, is, tragically, fitting with PFF's reputation for throwing truth, reason and logic out the window in order to support the entertainment industry's position at all costs.

QuickJump QuickPeek branches out: introducing the Weekend Warriors

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

QuickJump QuickPeek - Image 1

Hurrah! Weekends are made up of all the most awesome stuff. It's one of life's most satisfying things after all - perhaps second only to getting to scratch an annoying itch.

For one, most of us who get the weekend off (either from school or work - or both?) finally get to park our merry butts in front of the TV and play video games with impunity. Aside from that, we get to catch up on pretty much everything we missed out on during the week. Which is what we've been doing for the past 52 weeks, in case you were really living under a rock the size of Mars.

In QuickJump QuickPeek's second year, we decided to branch out... and dig deeper still. Because quite frankly, at the rate that each previous QuickPeek was going, it wasn't getting any quicker of a peek, if you get our drift. So with that, we'll be splitting it up and allow each of our blogs to go in-depth with the week's news!

Thus, we bring in the Weekend Warriors!

The QuickJump QuickPeek v2.0 changelog:

Yeap! From now on, each blog will be getting its own individual QuickPeek, each tagged under a Weekend Warrior label. This allows the individual teams to report on more news and add a little bit of editorial introspective into the week's news.

Yes, you heard us. This time around, QuickPeek - or should we now say Weekend Warrior? - won't just be recapping news. We'll be throwing in some incentive for you readers too. Little "behind-the-scenes" snippets that don't quite make it to the regular updates you find on the site.

So, who are the Weekend Warriors?

We'll have Weekend Warriors for all of our blogs in QJ.NET. That includes all gaming blogs - PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, PC, MMORPG, and WoW - plus those concerning Science and Technology - Science, Apple, Gadgets, and Mobile.

Check 'em out - lined up looking all pretty like that! Shiny banners for our new columns!

Weekend Warriors: Gadgets - Mobile - Image 1 Weekend Warriors: Gadgets - Mobile - Image 2

Wait - does this mean there won't be any QuickPeek anymore?

Yes and no. QuickPeek will still be around, sure! But of course, the meat of QuickPeek is in its Weekend Warrior children. Every week, once all the individual Warriors have been published, we can finally throw in the proud parent: a QuickPeek article acting as a hub.

Think of it this way. The Weekend Warriors are the branches, while the QuickPeek is the trunk. The QuickPeek will be linking to all the separate Warriors just so you guys have a central article to use as reference for jumping from one article to another.

We hope you guys have fun with the new system. If you have any comments or suggestions, you know what to do. The first set of Warriors are going up in just a couple, so stick around, why don'cha?

Adobe, ARM Teaming Up to Optimize Flash on Mobile Devices

11/19/2008, 02:50 |

flash_iphone.jpgAccording to the MIT Technology Review, Adobe is working with mobile processor manufacturer ARM on optimizing Flash Player 10 and AIR for ARM processors. Why does this matter? Because ARM processors are found in 90% of mobile phones (iPhone and G1 included), not to mention set top boxes, PMPs, and gaming devices (like the Nintendo DS). And how will they do it? Adobe and ARM say they have three main areas they're working on to improve the mobile flash experience.

First, they're customizing the compiler specifically for the ARMv6 and ARMv7 processors, which will help speed up and smooth out communications between the processor and the app. Second, they're going to take advantage of the graphics subprocessors found in some ARM chips. Flash on desktops isn't optimized for any sort of graphics processor, but taking advantage of this on a mobile platform will not only help with the workload, but it will improve battery life at the same time. Lastly, they're making video compression and decompression better suited for the processors, so that it requires less horsepower.

It should come as no huge surprise that Adobe says Flash 10 will be running on ARM devices by next year, considering that they already announced plans for the software on the iPhone and G1. It will not only make it easier to view sites with rich web content, but it will also be easier to view and upload flash videos, and run flash-based apps. [MIT Technology Review]

Adventure released for the iPhone

11/19/2008, 15:30 |

Part of me just wants to post this screenshot, link this app, and say "go get it," but I have a feeling that my blogging overlords here would think I was just being lazy -- they might not understand that this is a screenshot from Adventure, which is available for free on the iPhone. Anyone who ever played an Atari 2600 and owns an iPhone won't need any more explanation than that to install this.

But I don't want to be seen as lazy (any more than I already am), and so I'll also say that Adventure basically pioneered the action-adventure genre of games, and that though its art is spare and its noises are little more than bleeps and bloops, both are classic and coated with pure nostalgia. While Adventure is currently controlled on the iPhone with tilt controls, its designer will add touch controls as well in the future.

Other than that: go get it. It's free.

TUAWAdventure released for the iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 09:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Hands-On With Newber, The Location-Aware Call Redirector For Your iPhone

11/17/2008, 21:00 |

Think of Newber as sort of a location-aware GrandCentral call directing service that lives on your iPhone and can forward calls automatically to whatever landline is closest to your location. Other features, like being able to swap phones in the middle of a conversation, making and receiving calls from a "Newber" number and automatically sending all incoming calls to voicemail are super neat, but it's missing a few features that the older and free-er GrandCentral service provides.

The call redirection worked great in our tests. You can manually set calls to route to either your iPhone or your "local" landline, which is programmed via location detection and can automatically switch when you get to a certain place, like home or work. Outgoing calls from your Newber number are shown as your Newber number, which is fantastic for hiding your real number from business contacts or people you don't quite trust. What's not cool, unfortunately, is Newber doesn't have access to your favorites list, so you'll have to re-add your favorites from your contacts list (which it does have access to).

Compared to GrandCentral, Newber is still missing features like being able to ring multiple phones simultaneously, listening in on voicemail as it's being recorded, and having people announce their names before you pick up (or deny) the call.

The biggest difference between the two is that Newber costs $5 a month and 2 cents a minute, whereas GrandCentral is free. Is being able to route your calls to your landline automatically worth what's essentially long distance rates? Tough to say. But they're still in beta, and it may be possible that they'll tweak prices a bit before launching fullscale. [Newber via Chip Chick]
