iPhone 3G in the 17 Millions // Rates from around the world

06/29/2008, 08:06 |

iPhone

The iPhone is unstoppable with 17 million in pre-orders from around the world (of course, we also have the perspective that whatever the iPhone sells in a month, Nokia sells in a week, but still…). Canadian telco Rogers has announced their rates at Canadian $60 to $115 per month. Sweden has pegged their rates at $50.00 and Norway at $80.00. In Asia, the rumored price of the iPhone is a $200.00 initial fee with about $50.00 in monthly.

MySpace Mobile Goes To Russia With MTS Partnership

07/04/2008, 13:00 |

Russia's largest mobile telco, MTS, has inked a deal to be the exclusive carrier of MySpace in the country and some of its former republics. The localized MySpace Russia will become part of MTS' WAP portal and the telco will launch a branded community back on the website, intending to get in to social and viral marketing. MTS said it had a strategy to develop Web 2.0 properties for the mobile. MySpace may still be popular around the world, but it doesn't figure in the list of Russia's top 15 websites, according to February comScore figures. There, social nets like Vkontakte, Odnoklassniki and LiveJournal rule the roost.

You've likely seen this by now but I've got to link it up anyway because whenever I think about it, it makes me LOLL (laugh out loud, literally). The American Family Association automatically replaces words like "gay" with "homosexual" in the AP stories they display on their news site. When an American sprinter named Tyson Gay is in the news, the practice leads to hilarity.

Homosexual eases into 100 final at Olympic trials
Tyson Homosexual easily won his semifinal for the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials and seemed to save something for the final later Sunday.

And on it goes..."On Saturday, Homosexual misjudged the finish in his opening heats...", "Homosexual runs wind-aided 9.68 seconds to make Olympics...", "Close call: Homosexual barely averts major flop in 100..." Fox News has applied the same technique to stories about suicide bombers...they changed all instances of that term to "homicide bombers".

WIRED Gadget Lab [DEC 26, 2006]

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

This is it, the final countdown!

2006 is fast coming to an end, and so is the Gadget Lab. Whoa, whoa, whoa -- put down that RAZR! Don't hurt yourself. The G-Lab crew is taking a break to re-tool, re-work, re-write, and re-format. We're cooking up a new and improved newsletter that'll rock your world. It'll be ready to roll later in aught-seven -- we'll keep you posted on progress.

In the meantime, worry not: The G-Lab crew will be back in a couple of weeks (just in time for that gadget-orgy overload known as CES) in the form of a brand-spankin'-new blog. It will totally rule, trust us. We'll have all the gadget reviews you desire, along with the clever writing you love, plus a few other surprises we'll reveal soon enough. And if you need something to tide you over till then (and maybe help you recover from that wickedly decadent New Year's party), tune in Wednesday, January 3, at 8 pm to check out the premiere of Wired Science, our very own, very new, and very wired TV show. Check here
for more details.

Since we'll be on a brief hiatus till then, we've got a double-barrel blast of reviews to appease your gadget lust. First up is an almost supernatural gaming PC, a smartphone with some superior styling, and a set of wireless earbuds that make riding public transit almost bearable. Next is an LCD TV suitable for a Sith Lord, the ideal online gaming companion, and a camera perfect for taking shots while, uh, taking shots. Starting January 8, we'll be running full-steam ahead on our new URL: blog.wired.com/gadgets. Until then, you stay classy, G-Labbers! -- Daniel Dumas

Theaters Working To Make Even The Pre-Show Ads More Entertaining

07/03/2008, 22:13 |
Two different themes we've discussed here quite often are (1) that movie theaters need to stop worrying about piracy, and focus more on improving the moviegoing experience and (2) that advertising is content -- and it better be good content if you want the advertising to be effective. That's why it's somewhat encouraging to see that movie theaters are now experimenting with much more entertaining and interactive "pre-show" advertising. They're doing things like using motion sensors to have the audience "play" a game as a group, or having them use their mobile phones to vote on certain questions on the screen and immediately showing the results. That latter example may be doubly surprising considering how theaters these days are so anti-mobile phone. Still, while this is a move in the right direction, it's the wrong thing to be focusing on at this point. Improving the overall experience is much more important than making the pre-show ads better, so hopefully this is only one small part of what theaters are working on these days.

Sony Ericsson Is Greenest Again

06/30/2008, 21:10 |
greenpeace edition 8

The newest Guide to Greener Electronics by Greenpeace was once again topped by Sony Ericsson. This is the 8th edition of the list. Nokia, which used to take top position when this list began, is now lagging in second place, but it’s not like the Finnish giant doesn’t know humility. What’s curious about this new list is that manufacturers overall have dropped on their ratings. Last time SE was top they were number they had a 7.7 rating but now it’s down to 5.1.

Rock Band 2 timed 360 exclusive, over 80 tracks, playlist announcement at E3

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
New Details revealed for Rock Band 2 - Image 1The Associated Press has a new article up on CNN that exposes some juicy new details related to the upcoming Rock Band 2.

For starters, Rock Band 2 is set to be released on all the major console platforms, with the Xbox 360 apparently getting the game before the PS3, the PS2, and the Wii.

Harmonix and MTV Games also mentioned that the 360 version will be rocking store shelves come September, and that's not very far away. As for the content, we'll let the article speak for itself:

The second edition will feature a playlist of over 80 songs - all master recordings - which will include more female-fronted bands and artists who have never contributed tunes to a music game.

Combine that with the announced reverse compatibility for Rock Band songs and downloaded tracks, and you have a veritable smorgasbord of music right there on your console. Even better still, it was also reported in this article that more information, including the game's tracklist, would be revealed at E3.

It certainly makes us excited at the prospect of singing (and playing) to some new tunes. Here's to hoping part of the GTA 4 soundtrack gets into the mix as well - a little crossover like that would certainly be cool. Keep checking QJ for more updates as they become available.

Motorola's worldly Q9: "Napoleon" breaks cover for Verizon

07/04/2008, 01:14 |

It looks like Motorola and Verizon are getting ready to take a third crack at the Q9 form factor, following up the Q9m and Q9c -- and this time around, there's a little something extra in store. On top of the EV-DO Rev. A radio, the so-called "Napoleon" (codename, of course) features GSM, because -- surprise, surprise -- businesspeople who use Windows Mobile devices tend to do just a bit of traveling. It looks like Moto has taken this opportunity to give the Q9 meme a little nip-tuck job, too, with a rounded body and a tastefully-applied ring of chrome around the top edge. They've even tossed in a fingerprint scanner for good measure, a tip o' the hat to the suits who'll undoubtedly populate the upper 90 percent of this sucker's client base. No word on a release date or price, but can we cautiously submit a thumbs-up for the design direction here?

Sony Ericsson Fails Two High-End Phones

07/02/2008, 07:35 |
sony ericsson pulls out paris

SE was going to announce two smartphones, codenamed Paris and Bei Bei. They’ve permanently killed off this plan. The Sony Ericsson P5i and Sony Ericsson G702 have had some hype going for it in tech blogs. The company, however, decided the designs just wouldn’t do in the current industry climate. The features of the phones will not be up to par to current offerings and SE fears the rather bland design will not do well at all in the market.

Sony Ericsson is seriously becoming a Motorola when it comes to handset design. The distinctive SE design has become stale in my opinion. One bright light is the rumored PSP-like gaming phone. If SE can make it work, may be able to keep their illustrious place in the cellphone industry.

Music Fans in UK This Weekend Treated to Pedal-Power For Their Phones

07/02/2008, 05:26 |

The only real problem with today's portable electronics is battery life. The gear gets more powerful but sadly battery technology really hasn't kept up, that's why we write about things like solar power. But there are also nifty things called dynamos, devices you pump or crank to juice up your batteries. O2, a large mobile carrier in the UK, will be installing bicycle-powered dynamos around a festival it's sponsoring this coming weekend to charge up music fans' mobiles. Sure, they could have run power cables and created power stations, but where's the fun in that? And as anyone who's been to a large outdoor festival in the last few years knows, you're going to want to power up at least once a day or else you're cut off. And if you've got our luck, it'd be right before Winehouse takes the stage, so you'd have no bawdy SMS session to distract you. [Pocket Picks]

YouTube plus stupid or criminal acts is not a good combination, or is it?

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

Section: News, Web, Websites, Online Music/Video

Keeping in mind that there are just some things that you should not do. Take “throwing a baby” for example, but assuming you felt the need to do such a crazy thing, then why would you feel the need to not only record it, but also post the video to a popular site as YouTube. Its almost like asking to get in trouble, isn’t it?

The latest teen did just that, he had his friend film himself throwing a baby, well not actually throwing, but sort of launching it. The 16-year old placed the baby on a large inflatable pillow and then jumped on it to send the baby flying across the room. The teens then posted the video online and it was later found by one of the students teachers, who promptly called the police. The 16-year old has since been charged with felony cruelty to a child, and according to Sheriff Harold Breeden;

“It’s not going to be funny when the judge gets through with him.”

Could not have said it any better myself, lets just hope the judge does not go easy, because it was also noted that this particular teen “has never been in trouble before.”

While some people feel that YouTube is a least partially responsible for these acts, personally I am glad YouTube and similar site are around. Its hard to imagine that someone who is dumb enough to do something like this would have not done it in the first place, at least with sites like YouTube and the Internet in general it makes it a little easier on law enforcements ability to catch these stupid criminals.

As expected this video has since been removed from YouTube, but if you click the read link below, you can see the original news clip that covered this story. I will however caution you, its not pleasant to watch.
