The nice folks at Garmin have taken a gadget destined for the Land of Misfit Toys and given it the old spackle and solder treatment so now you can get yourself a shiny GPS for your sweet hybrid ride that’s just like new, if not just a little world weary. Will it sigh when it gives directions? Probably, but then you wouldn’t have it any other way would you? Here’s a excerpt from TG:

The nüvi 350 also comes with an A/C charger and approximately 700 MBs of internal memory for storage of supplemental maps, MP3s, and audio books.

¡Café mañanero! En horas de esta mañana como les contaba en cobertura en vivo, estuve en el lanzamiento de Digitel donde anunción un par de modelos que se suman a su cartera. Se trata del primer flip phone de Blackberry el modelo Perla 8220 con Wifi y el Bold modelo 9000.

Allí estuvo presente Gonzalo Fernandez quien viene trabajando en Digitel desde hace poco tiempo e impulsará el uso de Datos en el operador 412 le compañaba de RIM Lidia Feraco - Gte. Mercadeo RIM Canada y todo el team Digitel que hizo y hace posible la fácil implementación.

Entre ellos Kelly Aular quien cumple importantes tareas en la plataforma Blackberry para Digitel.

La presentación hizo conocer cada uno de los detalles que hacen posible estos dos equipos en nuestras cotidianos dias. Al estilo de “Quien quiere ser millonario” Se hizo “Quien quiere ser Blackberry Billonario” en cortas presentaciones con 13 preguntas los medios asistentes pudieron responder en detalles cada una de las caracteristicas del bold o el pearl flip phone.

Es así como al final de la presentación todos los asistentes nos hemos llevado un Blackberry Pearl Flip Phone para probarlo, verlo funcionar, medir experiencia para conocer nuestras opiniones al respecto.

The French music industry body Société civile des Producteurs de Phonogrammes en France (SPPF) is suing four US based developers of P-to-P applications, including the BitTorrent client Vuze, Limewire and Morpheus and Shareaza. (The latter is the one that is stimulating vitriol in the tech blogosphere as it is developed by open source development platform SourceForge.)

Under newly revised French law the US companies can be tried in the France as their applications have not implemented filtering mechanisms to block out copyrighted material.

A couple of arguments are being leveled at the SPPF. The first that these applications aren’t designed for copyright infringement. It’s not the fault of the developers that they are being used as such. This argument of course has been since the original Napster trial. I’m sorry, but it just doesn’t wash. However much there is legitimate usage, the vast majority of usage is not legitimate. All the developers need to do is support their claims off innocence by embedding filtering mechanisms into their apps. If they counter claim that this would restrict the liberty of their users, then they can’t any longer argue that they don’t support illegitimate usage of their technology.

Another argument being aired is that the music industry should stop being so hung up on trying to get paid online, indeed one story eve referred to "the Music Industry's obsession with copyright”. That’s like saying "the car industry's obsession with cars". Copyright is the oxygen of the music industry. Without it there is no industry. Sure there may be cases for changing some industry practices but copyright remains the essence of making money from music.

Music cannot just be ‘for free’ anymore than cars or houses can ‘just be for free’. If people aren’t paid they don’t make the product. Sure music will still exist, but you’ll swap nicely programmed download stores and well stocked high street stores for buskers and millions upon millions of artist pages, all clamouring for your attention. Perhaps that sounds appealing? The problem is, most of them would sound a fraction as good as they would if they’d been able to give up their day jobs and been given proper equipment, studio time, mentoring and artist development support. And even those that would still manage to sound ok, would struggle to find their way to your PC or mobile screen as they wouldn’t have any marketing support to help them get there.

I’ll close with an account of how we first ended up with music copyright collection, which says as much to today’s ‘music should be free’ argument as it did then, 150 years ago:

“In 1847, the composer Ernest Bourget visited the Paris Concert Café Ambassadeurs in the company of his colleague Victor Parizot. At the time, Bourget was a popular composer of chansons and chansonnettes comiques. Among other pieces, the orchestra played the music of Bourget. When the waiter presented the composer with the bill for the sugared water that he and his colleague had consumed as the fashionable luxury drink of the period, Bourget refused to pay claiming that the orchestra had repeatedly played his music - without paying anything: and so [took the] sugared water in return for playing his piece. The dispute between the composer and the owner was brought before the court. On 8th September 1847, the Tribunal de Commerce de la Seine prohibited the owner from playing works of the composer without his consent. The exclusive right of the author to public performances that had been anchored in the French law of 1791 was thus put into practice for the first time. And on 26th April 1849 the Cour d'Appel de Paris sentenced the owner of Ambassadeurs to pay compensation - i.e. in this case royalties - to Bourget.”

One of the hottest gifts this holiday season is going to be GPSs.  Everyone, at some point in their life, has gotten lost multiple times while on the road and owning a GPS these days seems almost as necessary as having a cell phone.

We have three different GPS companies to talk about - TomTom, Magellan, and Garmin.  Overall, we have four different GPS models that are going to be sold in many different stores.  First, let’s begin with the TomTom One 125, which is going to be sold at Sears, Circuit City, Office Max, RadioShack, and Navy Exchange - all for the same price of $99.99. 

This GPS comes with a 3.5 inch touch screen, voice guidance capabilities, FM Traffic updates, and maps of US and Canada.  Right now, this GPS is available for $179.99 at Circuit City, so it definitely will be marked down by a lot come Black Friday. 

Next up, we have the Magellan RoadMate 1200, which is going to be available at Meijer, Military BX, Sears, Target, and Navy Exchange.  Meijer will be selling it for $89.99, Military BX for $95.00, Sears for $99.99, Target for $99.99, and Navy Exchange for $99.99.  If there is a Meijer store located near you and you want to buy this GPS, you should probably head over there first to see if they have it in stock.  Now, this GPS features a 3.5 inch touch screen, 1.3 million POIs, SD memory expansion, Auto-Route recalculation, as well as a Dash Mount.  I went to the Target website for this GPS as well as the Sears website and right now they are selling this for $199.99 and $149.99, respectively.  Again, this gives you some perspective on how much GPSs are being marked down.

Moving on, we have the Garmin nuvi 260 only available at Circuit City for $149.99.  This GPS comes with a 3.5 inch touch screen, SD memory expansion, maps of the United States and Canada, picture display, many POIs, and voice guidance.  Also, this GPS is available right now for $249.99 at Circuit City. 

Lastly, we have the Garmin nuvi 260W, which is only available at Best Buy for $189.99.  This comes with maps of North America, a 4.3 inch QVGA TFT LCD touch screen with 320 x 240 resolution, SD memory expansion, automatic rerouting, and a high-sensitivity receiver, meaning it will calculate available routes fast.  Also comes with voice guidance, POIs, conversion calculators, 2D and 3D mapping, and a battery life of up to 5 hours.  This is available right now at Best Buy for $299.99.

The Chicago Tribune gives us an update on the two young men featured in Hoop Dreams, the award-winning documentary about high school basketball stars trying to make their way through life and, hopefully, to the NBA.

I'm on the bus. There's a horrible, fingernails-on-chalkboard screech every time the vehicle comes to a stop. A big guy next to me is hacking up buckets of phlegm. A teenage girl behind me is whining into the pink RAZR plastered to her face. But it's OK. In a few seconds, it will all disappear. I plug the Bluetooth adapter into my iPod, switch on the square wireless earphones, and pop the buds in my auditory canals. Ah, the sweet sounds of solitude -- just me and my personal playlist. When I get up to leave, I usually stumble as the bus lurches, but with this setup, there's no catching a thumb on a wire, no earbuds flying into a stranger's lap. It’s not just iPhone users who can listen to the radio while toolin’ about their fine city. A just-released (well, re-released, kinda) application for the BlackBerry called the Mobiola xPlayer lets you listen to Internet radio (that includes live news and the like) and MP3s (and AACs and WMAs, etc.) Listening to MP3s and the like won’t cost you anything, but to hear Internet radio you’ll have to pay a one-time fee of $19.95.

If I had bothered brining my BlackBerry 8800 with me, I’d be downloading this ASAP. But of course, being a total numpty, I forgot it. Oh well.

I was just watching Jay Leno doing a Q&A session with his audience.  Someone asked him who was his least favorite guest… he answered Ken Wahl.  So I googled poor Ken and in a few seconds landed on his Wikipedia entry and right in the entry was the following:

“On January 9, 2008 Jay Leno stated that he was his least favorite guest ever on the Tonight Show, adding (lightheardedly) that Wahl was “a pain in the ass.”  Check it out.

The application, developed by Intercasting Corporation, allows users to maintain and manage several social networking platforms with one easy to use interface.

“Our social networking applications are among our highest-performing category, and we anticipate sustained interest from consumers as social networks continue to explode in popularity and diversify in purpose,” said Mark Collins, vice president of Consumer Products for AT&T’s wireless unit. “The My Communities application brings unmatched simplicity, increased functionality and deeper integration to this space, a combination we believe will win over active users and newcomers alike.”

My Communities is compatible with MySpace, the mobile-only community Rabble, blogging sites LiveJournal and Xanga and the photo-sharing site Photobucket. My Communities also features sites whose members share common characteristics such as ethnicity (AsianAve, BlackPlanet, MiGente), faith (FaithBase) or sexual orientation (GLEE). Subscribers get instant access to additional sites as soon as they are added to My Communities and will be alerted to updates when they launch the application ? no upgrade is required. Through My Communities, subscribers can register for social sites directly from their phone without ever having to go to the Web, a feature not common with most other social networking applications.
