I?m glad we are giving our killer consumer products away ? it?s a great move for the company and a great move for our customers! A few months ago I was on vacation in the mountains outside of Denver relaxing in the hot tub with some other folks from the area. We started talking about what we do; all these folks were intelligent and technology savvy. However, none of them knew about RSS ? I explained what it was and they all agreed it sounded great and useful. Well, now that our clients our free I hope I don?t need to do any more explaining!
On top of spreading the love about RSS, this move will certainly help my friends and co-workers in the enterprise side of the house sell more software. As folks learn about RSS and the aewsomeness of NGES, their job of selling becomes that much easier! In addition to helping enterprise sales, we will also be focusing the clients on delivering more relevant content - you’ll be hearing much more about that in the following weeks and months.
Nick and Greg do a great job of explaining this transition so be sure to check that out. Get ?em while their hot!
BlackBerry Kickstart Flip Phone Only $49
07/04/2008, 20:45 |
The BlackBerry Kickstart is by far not RIM's best looking phone. But it is a real live BlackBerry and it will run a mere 50 bucks when it launches on T-Mobile in September.
The Centro has proven that a cheap smartphone can sell like hotcakes. Granted the Centro is cute, the Kickstart is not. But $50 (with a two-year contract, natch) puts it in the same mass market as the crappier LGs and Sammys. It's a crazy way to hook the kids, but it might just work. (It'd work better if the phone wasn't so ugly.) [Crackberry via Silicon Alley Insider]

Flash content ported to iPhone (via 3rd party b.Tween framework and EyeGT technology)
07/01/2008, 01:26 |I just read via Peter Elst that Thomas Joos (mobile guide “extraordinaire”) used a framework called b.Tween framework (currently betaware) that is part of EyeGT technology, created by a company called barefootsoft to port and run his original Flash mobile guide on the iPhone (quite a mouth full, eh?)
“eyeGT is the most comprehensive graphics and multimedia toolkit that combines an antialiasing vector animation and rendering engine with extensive texturing support and a multi channel synchronized sound system. eyeGT provides all this in a compact code base that interfaces to applications via an extended set of methods and functions (API). The API controls every aspect of eyeGT, allowing for the finest and most detailed customizations without reinventing and changing the structure of your existing code.”
Here is Thomas’s Mobile Guide for “rockwerchter” (a music event, I believe):
While Thomas’s endeavors might represent the 1st attempt at Flash on the iPhone in the public wilds, it does require BareFootSoft’s technology … and by *no means* utilizes a true Flash Player ported to iPhone (although Adobe has mentioned on several occasions publicly they are working on, and getting closer to, a 3rd party app store standalone type iPhone Flash player)!
These products merely take the original Flash application and coverts it to run on the iPhone platform using the b.Tween framework.
Things that 1st come to mind with this news: Performance (although, from the video appears to be decent) and Distribution (you need to framework, so users must install … and will 3rd party app store be possible for the EyesGT runtime (currently it is via app installer) ).
I admittedly don’t know much about the EyeGT technology, but it seems to me this is a great way to prototype Flash applications to be distributed on iPhone before/if we see Adobe’s efforts on a 3rd party player … and potentially Apple’s own efforts (when they have built up their native developers, perhaps they will dedicate some/more resources to a Flash Player port? … or perhaps they are working on one right now, anyone who knows probably can’t comment!).
In some respects, this news reminds me of the PSP Flash player (Flash 6 port) that was out not so long ago … first there was a unofficial (aka hacked) Flash player ported by independents and then Sony licensed and released an official Flash player, not to much later … unfortunately, look how that turned out (no defined ecosystem for Flash PSP content, no real roadmap for PSP Flash, only sprinkling of PSP Flash distribution and really mostly “experimentation”)!
Despite this … PSP is a cool device to develop Flash for. Hopefully, with the OSP (Open Screen Project), there will be a spark again, sometime when they (Sony) innovative their next portable device … maybe!?
Anyways, back to the iPhone … I think the iPhone case is a bit different though from the PSP. Adobe has time and resources invested (perhaps even Apple has or will have development time into a full player). iPhone is a growing market, device is multi-verstile … timing is right (people WANT a better user experience and DEMAND it now on their respective mobile devices)! etc, etc.
P.S.
I remember blogging about barefootsoft a while back. If they want more attention, I suggest they move *quickly* to open their product to the larger Flash community. Give them a shout, and maybe they will open up the beta a bit more (or make it clearer on where to get the BETA! I can’t seem to find it, anywhere on their site!).
I think, there would be a *ton* of interest from both the Flash Lite community plus every other Flash developer on the planet. Just a suggestion.
Tomorrow I anticipate thousands of posts within the Adobe blogging community at large about Flash content “ported” to the iPhone. Hopefully people get it “right” (that is, there is NO FLASH PLAYER, it is merely a process to get your original Flash content working on the iPhone by using their (Barefootsoftware’s) technology).
P.P.S Questions … wonder what version of Flash Lite was used for the guide and how much underlying device API, one can tap … Thomas?

.Everyone Be Afraid! Predators Move To Game Consoles
07/04/2008, 05:38 |You would think that the press would have learned to be careful about this, given that a whole bunch of studies came out in the last year showing that the press greatly exaggerated the "threat" of predators on social networks, as they're really not that widespread and the actual threat is minimal. But I guess reality and facts don't sell as many newspapers as blind fear mongering. So, while I'm sure that this is happening in a few isolated cases, it's hard to believe that this is particularly widespread. If it's not really happening much on social networks (where this sort of "grooming" would be easier), it seems unlikely that it's widespread on gaming consoles. And, of course, most kids know better than to engage with such strangers online, anyway.

Ask.com finalizes Dictionary.com purchase
01/01/1970, 01:00 |
With the deal closed on the Dictionary.com purchase, Ask.com has now become, at least according to comScore, the ninth-largest web property. The all-cash deal originally began back in mid-May and had Ask.com purchasing Lexico Publishing Group LLC. The web properties that were included were Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com and Reference.com.
Ask.com is reporting that this will give them an increase of around 15 million additional users on a month basis, which would put them up to a monthly audience of around 145 million. Terms of the acquisition, such as how much was paid were not disclosed.

We’re not sure why Philips’ e2e touchscreen X800 suddenly become one of the long-life 9@9 series, but I’m pretty happy about it. Touchscreen phone seem to be on a mad race to pack in the best features and the fancies GUIs. Philips, though, have something else in mind. The Xenium X800 will give you the best battery life for any touch screen phone with 850 hours of stand-by. The eight-hour talk time needs work though. Besides the amazing battery life and the e2e touchscreen, you get a 2MP camera and a minimalist set of features like no 3G or WiFi.

Matias Duarte, designer behind Sidekick and Helio, now developing Palm's next-gen UI
07/04/2008, 02:31 |Filed under: Cellphones
So we heard from a very reliable source that mobile user interface guru Matias Duarte -- who you may know as the man behind the Sidekick and Helio UI / user experiences -- actually left Helio late last year to join up with Palm. Although no announcement was made, we hear he and his gang of designers jumped ship (well before Helio completely flooded) to take on the monumental task of designing the UI for Palm's next-gen mobile OS (aka "Palm OS 2.0 or II"). His resume online now lists him as "Senior Director, Human Interface and User Experience" doing "Something new..." since September 2007; we got in touch with Palm, who confirmed that he's now under the company's employ.Of course, expectations should be pretty high -- Palm's only been promising this supposedly game-changing OS since around 2004, and the company's reputation and pedigree is (or at least it used to be) in groundbreaking mobile UI design. But this news also kind of makes us wonder: if they didn't have a killer UI and user experience team already in place and long-since working their asses off by late 2007, exactly how far along are they on this thing, anyway?Permalink | Email this | Comments

Back to the Future of Federated Identity?
07/03/2008, 18:21 |
A JupiterResearch report slated for publication late this year will take a new look at the topic of Federated Identity services. Once the rage in online financial services, most banks eliminated their offerings in the early 2000s when consumer demand lagged expectations.
Given the limitations of Web 1.0, this was understandable…and until recently, Wells Fargo was the only major FI still offering federated identity solutions to a retail market. This week, however, it was reported that Citi will introduce a service enabling it to verify the digital identities of customers to third parties. While designed for commercial clients only at present, its’ clear that increasing utilization of the Internet for financial services (both retail and commercial) have brought into focus the Trust Gap that exists online. Even with advances in authentication on bank sites, “something the customer knows” remains the dominant way through which trusted access is verified. Other options—“something the customer has” (such as a smart card/ token) and “something the customer is” (a biometric identifier), are certainly seeing early, but generally less-well-established, adoption in the US.
Citi’s Managed Identity Services, will use PKI encryption to help secure payment and other sensitive files while on clients’ computer system, andto enhance after-the-fact auditability of data so encrypted. While designed for corporate clients, recent JupiterResearch reports (including LINK )
have touched on this Trust Gap from the e-commerce consumer’s perspective. Way too early to address the multi-sided buildout requirements necessary to declare success, but worth noting from my perspective as a step back into the complex digital identity management space.
We're closed on Friday for the 4th of July...have a happy and enjoyable Independence Day weekend.
