Fiio has just released the E5, and despite it offering a design very similar to that of the iPod Shuffle it is not a media player but instead a headphone amplifier.  The E5 comes as a replacement to the previous E3, and in turn offers 30-percent more power than the E3.  The E5 has a power output of 150mW at 16? or 12MW to 300? and less than a 0.009-percent distortion at 10mW.  Additionally, the E5 has onboard volume controls (an item that was lacking on the E3) and a built-in battery that should offer around 20 hours of use.  Otherwise the E5 measures 1.73 x 1.50 x 0.48-inches and weighs in at a lightweight 0.92-ounces.  The E5 is currently available and retailing for around $20.

AT&T today launched the Nokia 6650, a stylish clamshell featuring Symbian-based S60 platform.

Designed with premium materials and customizable illumination, the 6650 features a sharp 2.2-inch display with QVGA (16 million colors) resolution.

It has external audio playback keys, external soft keys and a 1.36-inch display that captures photos, controls music and changes profile settings without ever having to open the device. A built-in 2.0-megapixel camera has an integrated flash to snap high-quality images even in low-light conditions.

Running on AT&T's 3G network, customers share live video while participating in calls via AT&T Video Share, or listen and download music from Napster, eMusic or XM Radio.

So, what do you do when a customer asks if you can create a Windows Mobile application that looks like an iPhone app? Well, if you?re smart, you?ll run. If you are not, like me, you?ll give it a go. Seriously though, creating a rich user experience with an iPhone-like look, feel, and interaction is hard if not impossible to attain on a Windows Mobile device today. The tools for implementing complicated business logic and algorithms on Windows Mobile devices are fantastic; want to interact with a camera or bar code scanner, stream live video, implement complex data structures or OO architecture, build an intricate ORM/relational database app, or do some other complex bit twiddling, that?s no problem on Windows Mobile. If you want to make a stunning Windows Mobile user experience ? good luck. There?s no CSS treatments you can leverage or Ajax goodness? you gotta build your fancy shmancy controls from scratch and that?s no fun. When I created the NewsGator iPhone reader (m.newsgator.com) I had a great UI toolkit to work with (thanks to Joe Hewitt), but no such luck with Windows Mobile.

So, in this case I spent many painful (but oddly enjoyable) hours writing custom controls to build a fairly interesting and attractive RSS ?widget? for Windows Mobile? there are some screen shots below. Yeh, I know it?s no iPhone app but it?s not bad…

As a side note, after seeing some of the demos of Silverlight running on mobile devices (Windows AND Nokia ? that?s right Nokia), I?m pretty psyched to see this technology flourish. It may be just what the doctor ordered. Flash Lite is another possibility but has been painfully slow to get adoption. Oh, there?s the iPhone SDK now too which is sure to enable some beautiful mobile apps. Good times!

A family in Portland got a whopper of a phone bill from AT&T. All told, they owed nearly $20,000.

The Terry family said they wished they would have received some kind of warning before receiving their 200-page bill in the mail for $19,370.
In July, their son headed north to Vancouver, Canada, and used a laptop with an AirCard to send photos and e-mails back home. The bill showed he used the service 21 times, but because he was out of the country, the activity added up to thousands of dollars in charges.
The AirCard allows users to connect to e-mail, the Internet and business applications while traveling, according to AT&T’s Web site. On the Terry family’s bill, they were charged international fees for the service.

The family says they don’t want to pay the bill because an AT&T rep told them they wouldn’t be charged for the calls.

Telcos do this all the time but by George, what a whopping drop for the iPhone! The 8GB iPhone is currently experiencing a huge price cut to $99.00 from Orange just in time for the holidays. This is way below the suggested retail price of the phone leaving a lot of subsidizing going for Orange. Moves like this usually cater to the initial appetite for gadget lust without consumers realizing how “trapped” they are in their post paid cellular plans for the next so and so months.
