WIRED Gadget Lab [DEC 26, 2006]

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

This is it, the final countdown!

2006 is fast coming to an end, and so is the Gadget Lab. Whoa, whoa, whoa -- put down that RAZR! Don't hurt yourself. The G-Lab crew is taking a break to re-tool, re-work, re-write, and re-format. We're cooking up a new and improved newsletter that'll rock your world. It'll be ready to roll later in aught-seven -- we'll keep you posted on progress.

In the meantime, worry not: The G-Lab crew will be back in a couple of weeks (just in time for that gadget-orgy overload known as CES) in the form of a brand-spankin'-new blog. It will totally rule, trust us. We'll have all the gadget reviews you desire, along with the clever writing you love, plus a few other surprises we'll reveal soon enough. And if you need something to tide you over till then (and maybe help you recover from that wickedly decadent New Year's party), tune in Wednesday, January 3, at 8 pm to check out the premiere of Wired Science, our very own, very new, and very wired TV show. Check here
for more details.

Since we'll be on a brief hiatus till then, we've got a double-barrel blast of reviews to appease your gadget lust. First up is an almost supernatural gaming PC, a smartphone with some superior styling, and a set of wireless earbuds that make riding public transit almost bearable. Next is an LCD TV suitable for a Sith Lord, the ideal online gaming companion, and a camera perfect for taking shots while, uh, taking shots. Starting January 8, we'll be running full-steam ahead on our new URL: blog.wired.com/gadgets. Until then, you stay classy, G-Labbers! -- Daniel Dumas

10/05/2008, 23:51 |
Everyone has switched into fall mode and that has translated into a huge jump in podcast interest in the Zune Podcast Marketplace software. This is an annual rite of passage, that summer is the time when podcast usage dips and then it comes stampeding back in the Fall and Winter. Well, this year is no exception and we have seen a 30% or more jump in new podcast subscriptions from August to September. This heightened activity around podcasts involves Zune users discovering great new podcasts in the areas of comedy, politics, money, news, tech and comedy. Verizon's BlackBerry Storm Private Pre-Sale Has No Storms

11/18/2008, 13:26 |

Oops. You know that pre-sale flyer that was doing the rounds to Verizon "VIPs", the one with the BlackBerry Storm on the left hand side? Turns out that if you, a VIP, turn up at a store with that very flyer you'll not be able to buy a Storm ahead of its launch. You won't, in fact, be able to touch one to see what it's like. You won't be able to see one. There are none, apparently. All you're able to do is get yourself put on a list for a call from Verizon on Friday so you can pre-order the phone. Okay, the flyer didn't make definite promises...but it's pretty much 100% misleading for Storm fans. Guess everyone has to wait for the real date. [BGR]

Stem-Cell Trachea Transplant Sets New Treatment Standard

11/19/2008, 17:54 |
Doctors have given a woman a new windpipe with tissue grown from her own stem cells, eliminating the need for antirejection drugs. "This technique has great promise," said Eric Genden, MD, who did a similar transplant in 2005 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. That operation used both donor and recipient tissue. Only a handful of windpipe, or trachea, transplants have ever been done. If successful, the procedure could become a new standard of treatment, said Genden, who was not involved in the research.

Amazon Launches Text Alerts

11/13/2008, 06:50 |
Amazon.com is trying to help consumers during the economic downturn by launching a new service that will alert consumers by text message about low-priced items of the day.

Customers can now sign up for a daily text alert at www.amazon.com/gp/anywhere/sms/goldbox or simply text 'GB' to '262966' (AMAZON) which will feature the popular Amazon.com Deal of the Day, sent directly to their mobile phone. Customers can then reply-to-buy with the text command "buygb" or follow the link in the text message to the Amazon mobile Web site to view the full details of the deal and shop other deals in the Gold Box directly from the mobile phone.

"Customers come to Amazon.com for low prices," said Eva Manolis, vice president of Retail Customer Experience at Amazon.com. "We are obsessed with lowering prices and we work hard every day to make it even easier to find and buy the best deals on the site. We're excited to offer customers new features like Amazon's Daily Deal Text Alerts in time for holiday shopping."

Cheap + travel. Search.

11/18/2008, 19:08 |

In a report we published last month called “Traveler Behavior in a Slowing Economy”, we discussed how the current economic environment is forcing travelers to reduce their travel frequency and spending.

We found that 33% of people who took a leisure trip in the summer say they will be more price sensitive than usual in their travel plans. Considering this is already an intensely price sensitive group with the average person researching 3 websites per product, More Price Sensitive is an important shift. In addition, 28% say they will research their travel even more intensely than they have before.

There are two trends whose implications I’ve been thinking about.

Last year, we’d seen an increase in branded search terms. I suspect going forward, words like “cheap”, “discount” and “deal” will creep back into top searches.

I also think we’re going to see travelers start researching earlier. That doesn’t mean they will purchase earlier. But they will be scanning, researching more intensely, and aware to pricing options to their desired destinations.

The combination of these two behavioral shifts could have a profound affect on all areas of online travel marketing. Search marketers will need to analyze their SEM robustly to determine if, in fact, they are affected by an increase in generic search terms. Promotions may need to start earlier and last longer. Website features will need to support longer planning windows.

The list will go on. “new economic reality” + “travel marketing”. Search.

at home in Barcelona

02/04/2008, 19:38 |

I wanted to mention that I am feeling at home in the whole territory of EU and I don’t feel “foreigner” anywhere inside of EU - whether it is Finland or Spain. So next week in Barcelona I will feel at home very much so.

In practice it means that I could move and live permanently in any place inside of EU, but I lived already in Italy - similarly warm country as Spain - so Spain is too warm for me, and thus not an option for me.

But who knows, I never say never. Which reminds me: I must plan/book my visit in Ireland next month…

Rumor: Quad-core iMacs

11/19/2008, 20:00 |

It's not even December, yet Macworld rumors are starting to fly. Digital Times is reporting that Apple is among the vendors ready to use Intel's new 65W low-power desktop CPUs, specifically designed for all-in-one computers. The lower heat output makes these great little chips for the iMac.

Additionally, these chips would come with a faster bus, and even run a bit cheaper than the dual core chips Apple is currently using - the 2.33GHz, 2.66GHz and 2.83GHz chips cost $245, $320 and $369, respectively, according to Digital Times.

The iMac has been the star of many Macworld keynote speeches, and we expect the same this year. See you in January!

The Garbage Pickers Of Newport Beach

11/12/2008, 00:44 |

Throughout the day, people go through my trash cans. It's a depressing sight. Among the streets of affluent Newport Beach are legions of trash pickers, pulling out cans, bottles and other recyclable material. Most are Latinos, recent immigrants or illegal immigrants, I would guess. Often they might be accompanied by one or two small children. It always makes me thankful I'm not having to take my children to scavenge through trash cans, plus makes me wonder why things can't be better.

We don't separate our recyclable material in Newport. I don't know exactly why. One rumor is that residents are just too lazy. Another is that with the small streets and alleys in Balboa, the part of Newport where I live, there's not room for multiple bins. Instead, the city ships everything off to a "Materials Recovery Facility" where everything is sorted through by others, using machines and by hand, to pull out what should be recycled. Apparently, it gives the city a 50% recycling rate.

I guess. I've always wanted to somehow get a tour of this MSF and see the recycling happen in action. It always feels weird to just toss bottles and cans in with the rest of the regular garbage. And by doing so, the alleys of Balboa get turned a place for the scavengers to harvest each day.

A minor problem, aside from the inhumanity of people surviving by picking through your trash, is the inconvenience. Plastic garbage bags get ripped open, so that any pickings can be extracted. That lets in flies, and when it's hot, you get lots of them.

We consider putting out all the cans and bottle separately, so that people who wanted them could just get them in a far more humane and efficient way. The problem is, apparently, that the bags still get ripped open anyway, just in case there's stuff inside worth getting.

That led to a search for see-through bags, so that those coming to our trash cans could see there was nothing inside worth harvesting. It's one of those things you never imagine doing, standing in a Home Depot looking for see-through trash bags, so that young mothers with their children won't waste their time on your garbage.

We never found the bags. The harvesting in the alleys continues on, as well as in the trash cans along the beach itself. Such a world.

Sony DR-BT160AS Bluetooth Headphones: Buyable Now for $130

11/18/2008, 17:45 |

The Sony DR-BT160AS Bluetooth Active Style Headphones popped up on Giz a few months back, and they looked promising if a bit odd, streaming stereo A2DP audio while packing a rechargeable lithium ion battery and a microphone for calls. But we had no pricing or availability information. Now, through the magic of press releases, we know that the headphones are available now for "approximately $130." That's not the most reassuring pricing announcement we've ever seen, but we'll take what we can get. [Sony]

Q&A with Ben Mattes - Prince of Persia engine, characters, and graphics

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
By adapting and improving the engine used for Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360, PS3), Ubisoft producer Ben Mattes talks about the "seamless fluidity" that gamers can expect from the latest Prince of Persia (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, DS). As a result, graphics are rich and smooth, and our hero can move better than Altair.

"The new Prince will display 13 times more polygons than the previous Prince, and even more than Altair in Assassin s Creed," Mattes said. "Every detail of the faces, clothes and accessories of the characters will feel next-gen thanks to hi-res textures, specific lighting systems and shaders." Ubisoft went all out on using skin morph, wrinkle map, indirect lighting, and occlusion to provide depth to each character.

Prince of Persia - Image 1

Having more power in platforms now than before and new systems to take advantage of, the new Prince of Persia will have crisp detailed graphics that its predecessors and even competitors do not. "The
richness and the high quality of the Persian environments have always been a key element of Prince of Persia games," Mattes said.

Thanks to next-gen technology, we are able to create vast outdoors worlds Prince of Persia fans have never dreamed of as most of the game takes place outside in a fantastic mythological Persia. Whereas in previous Prince of Persia games, the player was mostly confined inside palaces or cities.

Possibly the most exciting feature on the new Prince of Persia is the non-linear game experience. It's up to you how and when to progress the storyline, as well as the endings.

Samsung Gravity hits T-Mo today

11/17/2008, 20:11 |

T-Mobile said the Samsung Gravity would show up on Nov. 17th and, sure enough, it has arrived.

While the Gravity might not have the same pull as some of the bigger, less wallet-friendly QWERTY handsets on the market, at $49.99 (on a 2-year contract) it’s a decent pick for anyone looking to wear down their thumbs without wearing down their savings. It’s available beginning today in Aqua/White or Lime/Gray at the nearest T-Mo spot.

While the main draw would probably be the slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung has also packed in a 1.3-megapixel shooter (with video capture and 4x zoom, though we’re guessing that’s not optical zoom), IM support for AOL/ICQ/Windows Live/Yahoo, T-Mobile myFaves, stereo bluetooth (A2DP), and quad-band radio. For 50 bucks, that’s actually pretty impressive.

Nokia N93 Mobile Phone

Mobile Phones
Nokia Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of mobile telephones (as of September 2006), with a global market share of approximately 36% in Q3 of 2006. It produces mobile phones for every major market and protocol, including GSM, CDMA, and W-CDMA (UMTS).

The corporation also produces telecommunications network equipment for applications such as mobile and fixed-line voice telephony, ISDN, broadband access, voice over IP, and wireless LAN.

Nokia's headquarters are in Espoo, a neighbouring city of Helsinki, Finland, but it has R&D, manufacturing, and sales representation sites in many continents throughout the world. Nokia Research Center, the corporation's industrial research laboratories, has sites in Athens, Helsinki, Tokyo, Beijing, Budapest, Bochum, Palo Alto, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Nokia is by far the largest Finnish company, accounting for about half of the market capitalization of the Helsinki Stock Exchange (OMX Helsinki); a unique situation for an industrialized country. It also plays a very large role in the economy of Finland, and Finns have ranked it many times as the best Finnish brand and employer.
