The best thing you?ll see today: Portal gun in Half-Life 2
10/18/2007, 11:20 |Filed under: Hacks, PC, First Person Shooters
We’ll be honest. We’ve got it bad. Portal, we’re addicted to it. What started off as a fling with the perceived one-night floozy of the Orange Box lineup has turned into a serious long-term relationship. We find ourselves going through the other Orange Box offerings - and real life, we’ll be honest - thinking, “Gee, I wish I had the Portal gun here.”
Thanks to hard work and years of studying (stay in school, kids) the alchemists at Primotech have transformed blood and sweat into an incredible hack that lets you create portals all over the lovely, quasi-European walls of Half-Life 2’s City 17. Some notes: you’ll obviously need the PC version, you’ll need to follow some dozen steps full of words like “hosing,” and you’ll want to keep a fresh pair of pants nearby. But before you get to all that, peep the video […]

Wii Web Server alpha v0.73 - security patch, enhanced filename support
01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Though mostly bugfixes dot the changes for Wii Web Server alpha version 0.73, homebrew developers Cboomf and Felix 123 attempted to make the server software less vulnerable to exploits. And you'll need it, for with alpha v0.73 you'll also get added file support for binary files.
Unless you're running the Nintendo Wii as a full-on, public Web server, this may be one little concern to you. But some malware programs running on your LAN could cause the software to crash, and therefore, stall the Wii. Sometimes, you'd be lucky if the bug only stalled the machine.
Just to be safe, update to the latest build and gain some new support for the HEAD method for HTTP, plus the ability to load HTML pages with spaces in their filenames. Other changes include:
- Security bugfixes
- Fixed disallowance of ../ or ./ for security
- Server sends server version in header

01/01/1970, 01:00 |1.5 Billion Mobile Internet Users
06/25/2008, 22:20 |From the release:
Nearly a quarter of the world's population - roughly 1.4 billion people - will use the Internet on a regular basis in 2008. This number is expected to surpass 1.9 billion unique users, or 30% of the world's population, in 2012, according to IDC's Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast.
"The Internet will have added its second billion users over a span of about eight years, a testament to both its universal appeal and its availability," said John Gantz, chief research officer at IDC. "In this time, the Internet has also become more deeply integrated into the fabric of many users' personal and professional lives, enabling them to work, play, and socialize anytime from anywhere. These trends will accelerate as the number of mobile users continues to soar and the Internet becomes truly ubiquitous."
While the PC is currently the dominant means of gaining access to the Internet, IDC expects the number of mobile devices accessing the Internet will surpass the number of online PCs by 2012.
Additional highlights from IDC's Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast include the following:
* Users will access the Internet through more than 1.5 billion devices worldwide in 2008, including PCs, mobile phones, and online videogame consoles. By 2012, the number of devices accessing the Internet will double to more than 3 billion, half of which will be mobile devices.
* Roughly 40% of all Internet users worldwide currently have mobile Internet access. The number of mobile Internet users will reach 546 million in 2008, nearly twice as many as in 2006, and is forecast to surpass 1.5 billion worldwide in 2012.
* The most popular online activities today are searching the Web, finding information for personal use, using Internet email, accessing news and sports information, and accessing financial or credit information. In addition to these activities, more than 50% of online users worldwide are using instant messaging and playing online games.
In case you need any help with the math,
1.5B people connecting to the Internet from their mobile phones.
50% play games online.
That sounds like at least 750M mobile gamers worldwide. My research shows the current number of mobile gamers worldwide at 165M.
Christopher Hitchens writes about getting waterboarded for the July issue...
07/02/2008, 21:53 |Christopher Hitchens writes about getting waterboarded for the July issue of Vanity Fair.
You may have read by now the official lie about this treatment, which is that it "simulates" the feeling of drowning. This is not the case. You feel that you are drowning because you are drowning-or, rather, being drowned, albeit slowly and under controlled conditions and at the mercy (or otherwise) of those who are applying the pressure. The "board" is the instrument, not the method. You are not being boarded. You are being watered.
As you can see in the video, Hitchens maybe lasted 15 seconds or so.

07/03/2008, 21:19 |AT&T Announces Apple iPhone 3G Pricing
07/01/2008, 21:30 |
|
AT&T today announced the iPhone 3G pricing and voice and data plans, on sale at retail stores at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, July 11.
The iPhone 3G will be available for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following customers:
- iPhone customers who purchased before July 11
- Customers activating a new line with AT&T
- Current AT&T customers who are eligible, at the time of purchase, for an upgrade discount
Existing AT&T customers who are not currently eligible for an upgrade discount can purchase iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement. In the future, AT&T will offer a no-contract-required option for $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB).
Current customers may also choose to wait until they become eligible for an upgrade discount. Eligibility is generally determined by amount of time remaining on a current contract and payment history.
Current AT&T customers who are upgrading to iPhone 3G will pay an $18 upgrade fee and new AT&T customers will pay the standard $36 activation fee.
iPhone 3G customers can choose from four individual AT&T Nation plans, which bundle voice and unlimited data (email and Web browsing).
- AT&T Nation Unlimited: Includes unlimited Anytime Minutes for $129.99 a month
- AT&T Nation 1350: Includes 1350 Anytime Minutes and unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes for $109.99 a month
-AT&T Nation 900: Includes 900 Anytime Minutes and unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes for $89.99 a month
-AT&T Nation 450: Includes 450 Anytime Minutes and 5,000 Night & Weekend Minutes for $69.99 a month
AT&T will offer FamilyTalk plans, with bundled voice and unlimited data, starting at $129.99 a month for two iPhone 3G lines. Up to three additional iPhone lines can be added for $39.99 each.
Unlimited text messaging can be added for an additional $20 ($30 for FamilyTalk plans of up to five lines); $15 (1,500 messages), or $5 (200 messages).
Corporate email and other business applications require the Enterprise Data Plan for the iPhone, which is $45 a month and bundled with an eligible voice plan. Small business users may qualify for AT&T BusinessTalk, a shared plan specifically for small businesses.
Customers can prepare for their iPhone 3G purchase by posting "Get iReady" tips and frequently asked questions at www.att.com/iphone . The site also will include a link for customers to check their upgrade eligibility and other wireless account information.

Well, you thought maybe he was down for the count with the release of Halo 3, right? Master Chief would be far too busy to make a sequel. Perhaps even too busy to utter a single lolololololol. Industry Moves: Verisign CEO Roper Resigns; Bidzos Is Interim Head
07/04/2008, 02:25 |Verisign, which has pared down the company over the last year, has seen another CEO change: William Roper, who had been president and CEO for a bit more than a year, has resigned and the company board has named Jim Bidzos as interim CEO, president and executive chairman. Bidzos was the company's founder and first CEO in 1995, and he tried to reassure analysts Thursday that he had the background to step into the role and quickly move forward, WSJ reports.
No specific reasons were given for Roper's departure. He was appointed CEO in May 2007 after previous CEO Stratton Sclavos stepped down for undisclosed reasons. Bidzos said the company expects to have sold most of its non-core businesses on schedule by the end this year. Among the biggest unit yet to be sold include its communications division, which focuses on telecoms routing technologies, and a unit that processes billing transactions for wireless providers. It sold off its CDN Kontki to MK Capital in April for a paltry $1 million plus stake in the new business. Wonder what will happen to its mobile content business Jamba, in which it owns 49 percent, with the rest being owned by News Corp?

HDTV gas worse than carbon dioxide
07/04/2008, 00:25 |Bloops! It seems the gas inside flat-panel displays, Nitrogen Trifluoride (NF3), is 17,000 times better than CO2 when it comes to trapping heat in the atmosphere. The gas isn’t very prevalent yet but just wait until we start throwing away our old HDTVs to get OLEDs. Best of all, “has a characteristic mouldy smell and is thought to be highly harmful to the liver and kidneys.” Tasty!
While flat-screen manufacturers are talking up their greenness, what we really need to know is their NF3 use and energy efficiency. It will be interesting to see how long this issue lasts until someone does something about it.

Do J.R.R. Tolkien's Kids Deserve Money For The Lord Of The Rings Movies?
07/04/2008, 03:04 |Tolkien obviously isn't Peter Jackson, who directed the franchise, or Liv Tyler or Viggo Mortensen, who starred in it, or New Line Cinema, the studio that financed it, or Miramax, which owned the film rights for a second but couldn't get the movie made, or producer Saul Zaentz, who bought the rights in 1976. He's just the guy who dreamed up the cosmology, the whole shebang of hobbits and dwarfs, orcs, ents, wargs, trolls, whatnot. Then, there's the other side, pointing out that while it might be true that they legally deserve the money, it doesn't make any common sense:
I find it offensive to common sense to argue that the heirs of J.R.R. Tolkien (who are as dismayingly numerous as Kennedys in the court filing) are entitled to a shilling for work in which they had no hand and which was completed in 1949.Most of the essay focuses on the question of the length of copyright, which we all know has been expanded to ridiculous lengths. However, it does seem like a reasonable question to ask why the kids of Tolkien deserve money for a movie they had nothing to do with based on an idea they had nothing to do with.

T-Mobile Hikes Text Price To 20 Cents Each
07/03/2008, 12:21 |T-Mobile USA has raised the price of sending text messages from $0.15 to $0.20, the last of the country's four big carriers to do so. The 33 percent price hike will go into effect on August 29 for those customers without a text bundle, or for those who exceed their bundle limit.
Just three years ago, sending a text via the four major carriers cost $0.10 each. In 2006, they upped it to $0.15. In October last year, Sprint (NYSE: S) began charging $0.20, with Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T) quickly following.
CrunchGear did a bit of math and worked out that at $0.20 each, a text message with its 160 bytes of data max is the equivalent of paying $1310.72 for 1 MB of data, if the carriers charged for data downloads at the same rate they charged for text messaging.
So, will the price increase?a change in the terms and service agreement--mean that disgruntled customers will be able to get out of paying an early termination fee if they choose to walk away from T-Mobile? Not exactly. "Depends on the customer's usage and terms of the customer's agreement with us," a T-Mob representative said to RCR.
