QuickJump QuickPeek branches out: introducing the Weekend Warriors
01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Hurrah! Weekends are made up of all the most awesome stuff. It's one of life's most satisfying things after all - perhaps second only to getting to scratch an annoying itch.
For one, most of us who get the weekend off (either from school or work - or both?) finally get to park our merry butts in front of the TV and play video games with impunity. Aside from that, we get to catch up on pretty much everything we missed out on during the week. Which is what we've been doing for the past 52 weeks, in case you were really living under a rock the size of Mars.
In QuickJump QuickPeek's second year, we decided to branch out... and dig deeper still. Because quite frankly, at the rate that each previous QuickPeek was going, it wasn't getting any quicker of a peek, if you get our drift. So with that, we'll be splitting it up and allow each of our blogs to go in-depth with the week's news!
Thus, we bring in the Weekend Warriors!
The QuickJump QuickPeek v2.0 changelog:
Yeap! From now on, each blog will be getting its own individual QuickPeek, each tagged under a Weekend Warrior label. This allows the individual teams to report on more news and add a little bit of editorial introspective into the week's news.
Yes, you heard us. This time around, QuickPeek - or should we now say Weekend Warrior? - won't just be recapping news. We'll be throwing in some incentive for you readers too. Little "behind-the-scenes" snippets that don't quite make it to the regular updates you find on the site.
So, who are the Weekend Warriors?
We'll have Weekend Warriors for all of our blogs in QJ.NET. That includes all gaming blogs - PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, PC, MMORPG, and WoW - plus those concerning Science and Technology - Science, Apple, Gadgets, and Mobile.
Check 'em out - lined up looking all pretty like that! Shiny banners for our new columns!
Gaming

Science and Technology

Wait - does this mean there won't be any QuickPeek anymore?
Yes and no. QuickPeek will still be around, sure! But of course, the meat of QuickPeek is in its Weekend Warrior children. Every week, once all the individual Warriors have been published, we can finally throw in the proud parent: a QuickPeek article acting as a hub.
Think of it this way. The Weekend Warriors are the branches, while the QuickPeek is the trunk. The QuickPeek will be linking to all the separate Warriors just so you guys have a central article to use as reference for jumping from one article to another.
We hope you guys have fun with the new system. If you have any comments or suggestions, you know what to do. The first set of Warriors are going up in just a couple, so stick around, why don'cha?
Verizon Wireless Gets Rhapsody Music Subscriptions

Verizon Wireless today introduced Rhapsody's subscription music service, allowing its customers to download as much music as they want to their phones for $15 per month.
Rhapsody is following in the tracks of Napster, Apple's iTunes and Amazon.com, all of which have introduced MP3 downloads and moved away from digital rights management, or DRM, which prevents copying and piracy, but also makes it difficult to legally move music between devices.
Rhapsody also provides 30-second music samples that can be played on several websites, through "music discovery service" iLike. Clips will be expanded to full tracks, and users can listen to up to 25 of them per month without a subscription.
Previously, customers who bought and downloaded an individual song on a Verizon VCAST handset received another copy of the song for the PC. Now, that copy will be an unprotected MP3. The copy that arrives wirelessly on the phone will still be in a protected format.
"Rhapsody fulfills Verizon's promise to deliver the best mobile experience to our customers, said John Harrobin, Verizon Wireless' senior vice president of digital media. "Now, music fans can not only get the benefit of immediate access to music over-the-air, but also they can connect their mobile music and devices."
Songs downloaded through the new $15 unlimited service on Verizon phones will still come with DRM. The process requires users to connect their phones to a Windows PC running Rhapsody's software. There is no Macintosh version.
Rhapsody will work with the LG Chocolate 3 (available in July), LG Decoy and LG Dare; Motorola W755; Samsung U550, Samsung Glyde and Samsung Juke.

07/02/2008, 18:02 |One of the things that have always annoyed be of CDMA devices and carriers is the almost non-existence of openness between them. With my GSM/HSDPA handset I can pop in a SIM card from almost any other GSM network and be up and running with a snap of my fingers. This is something that is almost impossible to do on CDMA networks… heck even switching your current device on the same CDMA network is a hassle. While I give MetroPCS a pat on the back by trying to stand apart from the crowd is it really enough? What benefit is there to being open when the whole process of enabling the handset on the network is so ridiculously cumbersome?

Lightning Review: Motorola ROKR E8 Music Phone
07/04/2008, 19:00 |The Gadget: The Moto E8 ROKR is a candybar music phone that makes use of a touch-sensitive, haptic feedback panel on the bottom half of the phone. It's nearly buttonless, save for a few on the side. galleryPost('motorolarokre8', 3, '');
The Price: $199 (after 2-year contract)
The Verdict: Long story short, the hardware is great, the music interface is decent, the T-Mobile interface sucks. But let's start with the good. Not only do I like build quality, and how the button layout changes according to the phone's function, I also like that the haptic feedback really feels like the phone has buttons (Herrman is still convinced there aren't haptics). As a music player, the capacitive ring and menu system give it an iPod sort of feel, which is nice. It's pretty easy to use, and doesn't suffer from much lag. Syncing with Windows Media Player is a relatively painless process, but that means it's also Windows only (Mac Users have to transfer files via MicroSD, ugh).
The thing that makes me never want to touch the phone again is T-Mobile's UI skin, which takes competent phone software and turns it into a laggy, unresponsive pile of crap. Seeing as this phone is a T-Mo exclusive, I think it's important to highlight how much I dislike it. Frequently I try to enter into a menu for the camera, or text messages, only to be thrown back to the MyFaves home screen. After hitting another button in response, the phone decides it wants to go to the app I was originally trying to use, and then respond to my subsequent button pushing. The dialog boxes also like to clash with the menus, which allow for frequent input errors. I liken the process to playing voicemail tag with someone, which is to say it's totally annoying.
Other than that, it's just slow, the capacitive ring is no good for navigating the main menu, and trying D-pad feels cramped. So while I think the phone is an above average candybar, I'd hold out for a version running different software.
It's iPhone day

Holiday Week Wrapup – Russell-ing up signs of trouble in Bank Stocks
07/03/2008, 18:15 |Signs of continued difficulty among bank stocks. Russell Investments noted earlier this week that the combined market capitalization of bank and thrift stocks in its Russell 3,000 Index has declined to 17.4%, a drop from 22.4% a year ago.
The current figure is the lowest percentage representation of bank stocks within the Index in 8 years. As of this writing, the market has clawed back some in the last day of a holiday-shortened week, bank stock activity early this week likely took that number down even more. After the last two weeks, a long weekend can't come soon enough.
And if any additional perspective is needed, the average price of gas eight years ago stood at about $1.50 a gallon. Ah, the good old days.
Also this week, BofA’s Strategic Investments Corp. completed a strategic investment in mobile banking and payments provider mFoundry, continuing attention and activity in the space. Other mFoundry investors include Motorola, PayPal and NCR, as well as VC backers Ignition Partners, Apax Partners and others. mFoundry customers include Citi and BB&T, and the firm also has a strategic partnership with ClairMail. As recently noted, overall customer interest in mobile payments remains modest in the U.S., but recent numbers show that consumers are warming to the real-time, always-available nature of mobile banking, services. And as an account-to-account transfer is very similar to a mobile payment, well…you get the rest. LINK

Touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder Is BlackBerry 9500, Has Higher Res Screen Than iPhone
07/02/2008, 00:01 |
A bit more tricklage on RIM's "Apple Killer," the touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder: The official model number is the BlackBerry 9500, and the touchscreen is a bit higher res than the iPhone's (360x480 to 320x480). It'll be running OS 4.7.0 (the Bold runs 4.6). As we inch closer to the September release date expect to hear a lot more, since RIM's ship ain't exactly the tightest one on the seven seas. Sometimes U.S. political candidates don’t answer questions directly or quote each other out of context. Speechology.org strives to resolve that so that voters can hear for themselves what’s really going on.
Speechology is an archive of political debates and campaign advertisements, all of which are subject to fact checking by our users. ? Wall-E
07/02/2008, 18:37 |Wall-E was wonderful...best new film I've seen in a long time. With it, Andrew Stanton joins Brad Bird in Pixar's top tier of directors, with the much-heralded John Lasseter in third place. But I can see where Tyler Cowen was coming from when he stated in his short review that the film was "not recommended for children" and that "some bold genius at Pixar will be fired". Wall-E was funny, charming, and endearing but also subversive, disturbing, and dystopian. That combination that usually doesn't play well at the box office but some of my favorite films ride that fine line between comedy and disconcerting drama.
Some other thoughts and observations:
- This was the first Pixar movie to include live action sequences. What, they couldn't 'toon Fred Willard?
- Disney is selling all sorts of Wall-E merchandise to go along with the movie, much of which will end up in a landfill somewhere. Just like the movie. It's a full circle. Very clever, Disney.
- Here's a list of easter eggs and references in the film and here are some Apple-specific references. My favorite was a scene near the end with Wall-E, the autopilot, and the autopilot's buddy that referenced the Luke/Vader/Emperor struggle at the end of Jedi.
- I doubt it was an explicit reference, but the future earth of Wall-E resembles that of the under-appreciated Idiocracy.
- The ending credits are a fun little tour through art history.
- Presto, the funny short movie played before Wall-E, is available for purchase from the iTunes Store for $1.99. Here's the Buy n Large corporate web site. Galax-E is a font inspired by the lettering from Wall-E.
