NFL Sprints to wireless

11/06/2008, 15:50 |

The Wall Street Journal reports today that “Sprint Will Kick Off a Series of Eight Football Phone-Casts”:

For the first time Thursday, a National Football League game — the Cleveland Browns vs. the Denver Broncos — will be broadcast on Sprint mobile phones as part of the wireless company’s exclusive partnership with the league. That partnership deal is valued at about $500 million over five years.

Over the next seven weeks, Sprint will phone-cast the eight games that are televised solely on the NFL Network, the league’s cable channel. For the past three seasons, the NFL has struggled to persuade major cable operators to include its channel in their basic programming packages.

With the NFL Network is available in only about 40% of American households, Sprint executives hope the NFL games can do for their company what the league’s Sunday Ticket package has done for satellite-television provider DirecTV Group. Sunday Ticket, which is exclusive to DirecTV, allows dedicated fans to see every NFL game on Sunday afternoons, and has been crucial to DirectTV’s growth.

Spore Creature Creator demo leaked

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Screenshot of EA's Spore Creature Creator - Image 1With Electronic Arts' Spore (PC, Nintendo Wii, DS, Mac, and Mobile) still several months away, gamers who are on the edge of their seats waiting for the title will have to content themselves with the free trial version of the game's Creature Creator, set to be released this June 17.

This standalone program allows players to create their own life-forms using various sets of creature parts and building options as seen in the actual game. The trial version of the Spore Creature Creator will feature only one-fourth of the actual tools and library of creature parts, which will come out with the full version of the program this June 17 at US 9.99.

However, we recently received word that the trial version of the in-game creature generator was leaked before its appointed release date. Reports from previous users who have already download the file confirmed it to be the real deal.

We were able to snag the hefty 191MB file and hosted it on the QJ.NET download site. If you're interested in checking out what kind of creatures you can spawn from the depths of your imagination, go ahead and download it through the link we've provided below.

Tech Stars

03/11/2008, 04:35 |

Do you have that entrepreneurial itch that you can??t shake?  When I was coming out of undergraduate school, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur but I had no outlet to explore this desire.  I took a job working in my field of mechanical engineer which I enjoyed, but @ the time I really wanted to explore my idea of an online classified system (this was 1989).  I convinced my dad that it was a good idea but it pretty much ended there.  Hmm? imagine if I had a chance to explore this concept?  Perhaps eBay would have been founded earlier :)

Well, today there is no excuse for not pursuing your dream.  There are plenty of options out there and thanks to the open tubes on the internet those options are easy to find.

One of the best options for young, aspiring entrepreneurs is TechStars.  This is an amazing opportunity to nurture your ideas and learn from the best.  You will be exposed to brilliant folks who have ??been there and done that?.  And to top it off, all the people involved in TechStars are good people!

The founder of TechStars, David Cohen, is one of the brightest tech minds I have ever met, and he is down-right a generous and kind human being.  Don??t get me wrong though, David will not hold back and will let you know what??s on his mind and that is another trait that I admire and aspire to replicate.  You??ll also get introduced to folks like Brad Feld ?? I have not had an opportunity to work too closely with Brad, but when you hear him speak and recognize the legacy he is creating in the Boulder Tech scene you realize this is a special individual and you should pay close attention.  The opportunity to learn from folks like this is on par with a degree from a top notch university, is condensed into one summer, and you get a little bit of cash to boot.

If you are thinking about TechStars stop now and just apply.  Do it and thank me later!  The application deadline is coming fast -  http://www.techstars.org/apply/

Solar system a bit squashed, not nicely round

Zune Delivering Real Competition in Portable Media Player Market

09/09/2008, 07:39 |
The new features in the Zune 3.0 release are adding to user options to discover music in new ways. Microsoft Zune research has shown that radio is still being used by the majority of potential users to discover new music. Most people like to have help in discovering new music. The buy from FM feature rated very high in the research and would drive device and service adoption.

The perception that radio is dead is misguided and has been for years now. Many bloggers and major media back in 2004 said, that radio was dead with the invention of Podcasting and that has NOT at all happened. The same is true for music discovery from broadcast radio.

Broadcast radio is still very important (huge audience) and will continue to be so for a very long-time. These new options don?t stop users from using the Zune players as just a digital music player, Zune just takes it to an new level. If the portable media player market is going to grow then there needs to be more ways new potential users can get into the digital music game.

Many may not realize it, but still as of today the majority of people in the USA do not currently own a digital portable media player and these new Zune features are a way of pulling this huge existing radio listening market into the digital music/portable media player market. The other reason to be positive about the Zune features in 3.0 is that it is always good to have competition in this kind of market.

I just don?t see why many bloggers and major media have to keep slamming Zune, even as it continues to innovate in this evolving space. It is still very early days for digital media and portable consumption of that media. Zune does not have to follow Apple to succeed, as I believe that Zune is quickly moving into the leadership position around innovation in social networking digital media discovery, wireless sharing, sync and radio to digital e-commerce.

Spot.us ? ?community funded reporting? ? launches

11/10/2008, 21:34 |

With current news industry organizations in financial trouble, how is investigative reporting going to be funded in the future? One experiment is well worth keeping an eye on. Spot.Us has launched. I contributed to its first “truthiness” campaign — to fund local reporters to research claims by local political candidates. Support it!

Spot.Us is a nonprofit project of the Center for Media Change. We are an open source project, to pioneer ?community funded reporting.? Through Spot.Us the public can commission journalists to do investigations on important and perhaps overlooked stories. All donations are tax deductible and if a news organization buys exclusive rights to the content, your donation will be reimbursed. Otherwise, all content is made available to all through a Creative Commons license. It?s a marketplace where independent reporters, community members and news organizations can come together and collaborate.

Would you peek into ?Somebody Else?s Phone?

11/08/2008, 07:29 |

Somebody Else's Phone

Sometimes a phone is a clearer mirror of ourselves.

Call it what you want. Marketing sensitive denizens may call this another PR spin from Nokia but I see it from another point of view. Nokia’s latest campaign dubbed Somebody Else’s Phone has been around since October and although it differs in every region, one particular message stands out. They’ve hit it right in the bag: You are your phone.

Imagine this. If you were to stumble across a phone in a dark alley that was obviously lost by its previous owner, would you itch to hazard a peek into it? And believe me, you can find out so many things about a total stranger by just peeking into his or her phone. So much of our life is hidden in the unlocked safe that is our mobile. From inbox text, sent messages, call history, music, photos, video and even the applications installed - tell us so much about a person without meeting them.

How much sensitive information do you keep in your phone? Let’s say you were to lose, god forbit, your phone tonight at a party, how much if your life would be revealed to a complete stranger?

Digital voyeurism at its best!

Haw haw: Static-charged balloon foils security camera

    08/01/2008, 18:30 |

    lamson1

Ah, William Lawson of Brooklyn, New York, you are a smart guy. I can only hope that your balloon trick shows up in future iterations of the Splinter Cell series. I?m getting tired of shooting the cameras out with a pistol. It wastes bullets, it?s dangerous, and it?s impractical for Sam Fisher to have to poke his head out just to aim at a target he could very easily disable with a little bit of static electricity. Perhaps he can start to carry a bag of balloons, string, and a large helium tank with him wherever he goes.

HTC G1: Android Debuts, First Impressions

    11/06/2008, 22:23 |
To begin, it must be noted the author is an iPhone addict, and duly biased. And, this review will pit the G1 vs. the iPhone in many regards. The photo shown here was taken with the iPhone (yes, the crappy iPhone camera).

Getting up and running was simple and fast: add the SIM card, power on, and configure the GMAIL account you want associated with your phone.

First catch: make sure the GMAIL account you are using is the one you REALLY want to use. After you add the account, there is currently no way to change it other than resetting the phone to factory settings. See the manual on how to do this.

After you have the GMAIL set, you are off and running. And playing. There are many features to check out, and the input methods are numerous: touch screen, track ball, full QWERTY keyboard and few tactile buttons to boot.

After some time cruising around the device, some initial thoughts came to mind:
    • If you don't like the idea of being forced to have a GMAIL account, don't get one. Or hack it!
    • Its much bulkier and heavier than I thought it would be; much more than the iPhone.
    • The applications available in the 'Marketplace' are very average, and seem out of date
    • Getting on WiFi is easy, but unlike the iPhone it doesnt pro actively ask you to join one
    • touch screen is fine, appears very responsive
    • adding additional email accounts is straight forward, no harder/easier than iPhone mail application
    • Feels much more like windows mobile than I would have thought.
    • Awkard holding it in landscape position (for your right hand) and using keyboard, not as nice as Sidekick, as the device gets in the way of itself
    • trackball might be overkill for everything but games. but I love it for games, and this is an important part
    • Camera is pretty solid, though not sure on exact method to snap shot (see photo on right)
Overall, good first effort. its apparent that the HW and SW is from different firms as its not totally tight. Its a PC, not a Mac :)
