11/19/2008, 23:15 |T-Mobile is getting deeper into the photo business. The carrier is offering a new service that lets customers email pictures straight from a cellphone to a digital photo frame?but it'll cost them. The frame, which holds a SIM card, sells for $100 at T-Mobile stores. On top of that, customers pay a $10 monthly service fee that lets them email an unlimited number of pictures from their cellphones to the frame. The frame, called Cameo, is apparently the first device of its kind in the U.S. that has a cellular connection. Separately, in an effort to lure holiday shoppers, T-Mobile today began offering free companion airline flight tickets to new and existing customers who sign-up for a two-year contract between Nov. 19 and Dec. 24.

10/29/2008, 06:13 |Heh -- I'm a vodka fan, so I got a kick out of learning this today. Orange County has its own homegrown vodka -- Bu-Tay Vodka! I gather it's made or distributed out of OC, and I got another fun surprise. It's made with water from Bend, Oregon. Bend's long been a hub of search marketing related activity, not to mention home to the best breakfast place I've ever eaten at (the name I forget, but I suspect some Bendites will comment to refresh my memory). I don't see it rated on this cool review chart over at Rate-It All, but it's also apparently not sold widely outside California. I'll have to give it a whirl.
Sprints Wants To Help Customers Understand Their Phones
09/09/2008, 15:44 |Sprint is formalizing a plan that will make their store employees know more about the phones they’re selling. This, in turn, should help the customers who come into the store get a better handle on the phones they’re purchasing. The move is not unlike what’s been going on with electronic stores that attempt to demystify gadgets. The better the customer understands what they’re buying, the more likely they are to purchase the time.
Spring has 1,900 stores nationwide, all of which were closed recently in order to facilitate training.
Customers who don’t have time for the 10-minute to half-hour sessions can make appointments for later visits. These free sessions will be available to existing subscribers as well, even if they aren’t buying a new phone or accessory, Dixon said.
The company tested the system in St. Louis and Pittsburgh in July, and customer satisfaction improved so much that the company rushed it into a nationwide launch, she said.
Sprint said a better educated customer was also less likely to want to return a phone.

Nokia Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of mobile telephones (as of September 2006), with a global market share of approximately 36% in Q3 of 2006. It produces mobile phones for every major market and protocol, including GSM, CDMA, and W-CDMA (UMTS).
The corporation also produces telecommunications network equipment for applications such as mobile and fixed-line voice telephony, ISDN, broadband access, voice over IP, and wireless LAN.
Nokia's headquarters are in Espoo, a neighbouring city of Helsinki, Finland, but it has R&D, manufacturing, and sales representation sites in many continents throughout the world. Nokia Research Center, the corporation's industrial research laboratories, has sites in Athens, Helsinki, Tokyo, Beijing, Budapest, Bochum, Palo Alto, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
Nokia is by far the largest Finnish company, accounting for about half of the market capitalization of the Helsinki Stock Exchange (OMX Helsinki); a unique situation for an industrialized country. It also plays a very large role in the economy of Finland, and Finns have ranked it many times as the best Finnish brand and employer.

11/19/2008, 18:32 |Mobile Startup Spotlight: Tatango
11/12/2008, 18:27 |
Recently I was introduced to an exciting new mobile startup based in Bellingham, Washington called Tatango ( http://tatango.com). I had the opportunity to chat with their CEO and Founder, Derek Johnson, last week to learn more about the company and hear about their future plans.
The company was started just over a year ago under the name NetworkText, and recently re-branded under the name Tatango. (According to a video on their website there is no meaning behind the company name.)
What exactly does Tatango do?
Tatango provides a simple to use service that allows you to send a text or voice message directly from your computer or mobile phone to a group, keeping them connected anytime, anywhere. For example, lets say you had a group of people you wanted to communicate with in a more time sensitive, mobile way than through email. You could certainly grind your way through sending individual text messages or, by signing up to Tatango, you can message everyone with a single effort. Tatango allows any group to collect, manage and mobile message all of their group members both from a computer and mobile phone. And the great thing is that it doesn?t require any special phone and users don?t need to download any software to use the service. As long as you have text messaging, you can use Tatango.
I gave the service a test drive and it is dead simple to use. They have done a great job with the User Interface and even a non-technical Hockey-Mom could figure it out. You set up a group, invite your members and once they join your group, you are able to message them. (This prevents against the dreaded mobile-spam issue.)
It is free to sign up and the basic service is free to use. Tatango makes money by placing 30 character text ads at the bottom of group text messages and 7 second advertisements within voice messages. They also offer a premium version that is $4.95 per month which provides additional features such as the ability to add keywords. Today the service works across all major US wireless carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) and Derek tells me that they will be adding International support early next year as well.
The company is doing great ? they raised an undisclosed amount of funding from The Bellingham Angel Group earlier this year which allowed them to beef up their technology infrastructure, move into some office space, re-design the website and hire a few folks. They now have 6 employees and have had over 5000 groups sign up to use the service. The average group size is 40 and Tatango is now sending about 4 million messages per month across these 5000 groups.
Talking to Derek was very refreshing. He is a young guy (23) and although he admitted some people (guys with $$) have expressed concern about his lack of experience, he is passionate about his company and loves what he is doing. As Derek explained, he didn?t start the company with any grand vision ? he was simply trying to create a more efficient way to communicate with his friends through text messages. Derek and a few buddies spent about 4 months building a prototype and guess what, next thing they knew they had lots of other folks who wanted to use the service as well.
I asked Derek what the next 6 months had in store for him and along with looking for additional capital to stay ahead of the growth, his focus is pretty simple:
1. Get more groups signed up to use the service.
2. Fine-tune his business model so he can get profitable.
3. Continue to add features and functionality to make Tatango even better to use.
Personally I would have loved to use this service lat spring when I was coaching my 6 year old's Tee-Ball team. We had one game during the week and one game every Saturday. If you?re at all familiar with Seattle weather in April and May, you know that it is completely unpredictable. There were at least 4 games when I had to make last minute decisions on whether or not the games were on, and then figure out how I communicate that to 11 other parents. Tatango would have been a perfect solution and I?m sure I?ll find other uses for it as time goes on.
I encourage you to check it out at tatango.com. It will be fun watching these guys grow.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 Review
11/15/2008, 04:00 |
The Gadget: The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is the new flagship smartphone for the electronics giant. Packing the new "Panels" interface, a full QWERTY keyboard, 3G data and 800x480 touchscreen in a full metal body, is the Xperia X1 poised to challenge the top smartphones?
Price: $800 (no carrier or contract required)
galleryPost('xperiax1se1', 3, ' ');
Verdict: The Xperia X1 is kind of a mixed bag. For every good thing the phone does, there seems to be something detracting from it as well. From a hardware standpoint, this is a well built phone that feels extremely solid in the hand. But at the same time, it's not exactly the lightest or slimmest phone available (even for a slider). The 528MHz Processor and 256MB RAM also give the X1 enough horsepower to run smoothly...most of the time.
The 800x400 VGA screen is beautiful, considering all that resolution is tightly packed into a 2.8-inch screen. Videos and images are bright, vibrant and sharp. The fact that it uses resistive touch techonology, however, is not so great. But my favorite hardware aspect of this phone is the keyboard. The keys are well spaced, responsive and I rarely have typos in my texts; this lets me worry about what I'm saying instead of whether or not I'm typing gibberish. The phone also has an optical sensor stuck in the middle of the four-way directional pad that lets you flick your thumb over its surface, and it will scroll up and down, side to side. It's an interesting use of tech, but feels slightly awkward, a bit gimmicky since there's already a touchscreen and a d-pad make the sensor somewhat unnecessary.
On the software side, the big sell for the Xperia are its custom panel interfaces, which range from different types of homescreens, a media player interface, and even a Google-oriented screen. While selected, these panels serve as the default screen for your phone and all navigation tracks back to the panels. In theory, this is a good idea. But when you're in a panel that isn't built around a today-style screen, and you quickly want to check any missed calls or text messages you may have, this interface becomes a bit of a nuisance.
But the one panel that does stand out is the Media Player. Sony Ericsson took their design cues from the PSP and PS3 and created an interface that is equally appealing as it is functional. Clean and streamlined, the media player features large icons and buttons that work well without a stylus. From the screen, you can watch movies, listen to music, view photos or even bring up your contacts list to make a quick call. Aside from the keyboard, this is probably my favorite feature of the Xperia X1.
galleryPost('xperiax1se2', 12, ' ');
In terms of calls, signal strength and call clarity were generally good in the parts of the Bay Area I tested in, but phone screens could be better designed. When you hit the call button from your home screen, it brings up your keypad with a list of recent calls. A series of icons for call logs, favorites, and contacts sit above the keypad. In the call log subscreen, it's a bit tough to tell what are missed calls, dialed calls, and received calls at first glance.
Battery life is great, as I can make calls, browse the internet, and watch videos at a moderate level for two or three days without charging it. The 3.2 MP camera has a pretty good sensor that takes crystal clear photos, and uses your touchscreen taps to autofocus on a specific object. But a slow shutter—especially in low light—detracts from the camera experience. Other than that, the software experience on the Xperia is pretty standard WinMo fare.
Overall, the custom software upgrades Sony Ericsson added to WinMo 6.1 are good, but feel tacked on; ths ranges from random 6.1 elements popping up over the custom UI when you get a call or text, text messages and missed calls that go unreported or the frozen screens that occur when you try to transition to another panel/app. It feels like Sony Ericsson chose WinMo by default, not because it's the mobile OS they really wanted.
To be blunt, the Xperia X1 isn't quite up to snuff with the top smartphones in the market from an overall standpoint. Whether you're talking about its $800 price tag, stylus-based resistive touchscreen or 3.2 MP camera, this is a phone that would have fared better amongst early adopters a year or two ago. This is not to say the Xperia X1 is a bad phone—on the contrary, it's a very respectable piece of hardware. It's just not good enough to justify the cost when better, cheaper phones are available. MMS-capabilities coming soon to a Swedish iPhone?
11/18/2008, 23:18 |
The oft-bemoaned lack of certain, um... capabilities of the the iPhone is forcing individual companies to take desperate measures, it seems. It's not entirely clear, but MacWorld says it's confirmed with Telia that the Swedish-Finnish carrier's developing an MMS-enabling app for the iPhone. MacWorld says the app will hit the market in the next two months, which is great news for everyone in Sweden. If you live anywhere else in the world, however, you'll just have to continue on, rueing the day you ever encountered Apple's MMS-spurning, copy and paste-hating handset.Update: Though the source is Swedish, it's entirely reasonable to believe that this'll spread across all of Telia's markets (and the world?). Thanks, commenters!
[Thanks, Martin]

11/19/2008, 15:47 |Looks like NVIDIA’s going down the same path as AMD to get more power of its GPU?s, well in fact NVIDEA are going to take it to a whole new level. NVIDEA has just announced its all new GPU-based Tesla Personal Supercomputer.
So what is this all new GPU-based Tesla Personal Supercomputer all about then? Well they say it will give you power of the traditional supercomputer cluster at 1/100th of the price and if that is not enough how about a platform based on the company?s new Tesla C1060 GPU Computing Processor which in itself is based on NVIDIA’s CUDA parallel computing architecture.
These supercomputers will come with many new host manufacturers that have already partnered with NVIDIA and those include Dell, Lenovo, ASUS and many more. The details are still pretty secret at the moment but we will definitely let you know more soon as we hear more. They will be of similar prices of a conventional PC workstation.

Toshiba Satellite P100-ST9612 Laptop

On a recent fact-checking mission for Wired, I was called upon to infiltrate the depths of several online 3-D games. Thank goodness I had this baby as my gaming rig. My supercute blonde avatar looked even more buxom on the 17-inch, 1,680 x 1,050-pixel screen, while the 2 gigs of RAM let me simultaneously surf the Web and storm Virtual Laguna Beach-heads. It was also perfect for perusing other media, ranging from DVDs to YouTube clips, while a pair of integrated Harman Kardon speakers handled audio output deftly. Too bad this notebook is way expensive and ungainly (huge 16 x 11-inch footprint). But when I'm fighting in World of Warcraft or just living my Second Life, the Satellite is my wingman of choice.

Blow-Controlled Phone Camera Can Only Take Pictures of Confused, Concerned People
11/17/2008, 11:54 |
There are some inventions that cause electronics manufacturers and consumers alike to wonder why they hadn't been invented before, and how anyone ever lived without them. And then there's this. Fantalog Interactive has devised a camera phone that takes pictures when you blow on it. Apparently following some kind of hilarious global realization that phones can be controlled with stale air, the Fantalog 'Emotion' blow-camera is not only inspiring because it's the first of its kind, but because its invention has come to pass despite providing no conceivable benefit to anyone at all.
