Kodak Sues Samsung, LG Over Digital Camera Technology Used In Phones

11/19/2008, 21:29 | MoCoNews

imageEastman Kodak has filed a pair of lawsuits against LG (SEO: 066570) and Samsung alleging that the companies infringed on patents involving digital cameras in some of their devices. The complaints, which were filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York and with the U.S. International Trade Commission, involve technology related to image capture, compression and data storage and a method for previewing motion images.

Kodak is asking for compensation for damages resulting from the companies' alleged infringement and injunctions to prohibit the further sale and importation of products cited in the complaint, which are believed to be Samsung's Blackjack II and LG's Dare. Kodak didn't disclose how much money it was seeking in the suit. It said it's held discussions with both companies to try to resolve the matter, but they've been unable to reach agreement. Samsung and LG have both indicated their plans to fight the charges, but the dispute could, of course, end in a settlement before ever reaching a court's docket. Eastman Kodak makes a large slice of its revenue from licensing imaging patents to several companies including Panasonic, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Olympus, Sanyo, Sharp, Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC) and others. Kodak is making a bigger push in the mobile device space of late, most notably with the recent launch of the ZN5, a co-branded device from Motorola that features a 5-megapixel camera. Release.

Motorola today announced the VE66 with CrystalTalk audio technology for clear conversations, a 5.0-megapixel camera and MP3 player.

The VE66 is a sleek, slider with the Motorola’s new widgets integration. With downloadable widgets, consumers can get real-time information on weather, sports scores, stock tickers, flight information, social media and news headlines.

It captures high-resolution images on its 5.0-megapixel camera. Pressing a dedicated camera key quickly auto-focuses, activates an LED flash, and if necessary, stabilizes the image and reduces red eye. Automatic color saturation delivers whiter whites and crisper blacks.

An MP3 player with USB 2.0 provides high-speed data downloads on a PC. Wi-Fi connectivity makes browsing the Internet or sharing photos, audio or video files easy. An integrated FM radio with RDS can help listeners “name that tune” while on the road.

With CrystalTalk technology, conversations are amplified and background noises reduced for a noticeable difference in clarity. A second microphone further enhances audio quality by eliminating ambient background noise from calls.

FastScroll one-touch navigation wheel lets users quickly navigate through menus.

"The VE66 delivers on consumer's demand for more personalized listening and imaging experiences on a mobile phone," said Tracey Koziol, Corporate Vice President of Motorola.

The Motorola VE66 is expected to be available Q4 2008.

Keepin' it real fake, part CLXVIII: Motorola Aura clone is everything we ever wanted in a knockoff

11/19/2008, 15:41 | Engadget

If there was ever a phone worth cutting down to size with a completely shoddy but not actually completely unattractive fake edition, it's the Motorola Aura. What we have here is the Wingtech D20, which shares the swivel form factor of the Aura, mocks the round LCD with a perfectly boring square one in a round hole, and boasts a surprisingly weak complement of features, even for a "fake" phone. Oh how you suffer for fashion, Motorola.

[Thanks, Chris]

Motorola announces VE66 slider phone

11/19/2008, 09:49 | Cell Phones etc.

Call me a bit paranoid, but the sight of this phone from Motorola gives me the chills that there might be a new RAZR-trend looming on the horizon.

Motorola has just announced the VE66. It’s a new slider that looks a lot like the ZN5, Motorla and Kodaks little collaboration. The VE66 sports a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash, image stabilization, WiFi, CrystalTalk noise reduction and a navigation wheel.

That all sounds pretty good, but the familiar design choice is freaking me out. I’m really hoping Motorola hasn’t regained an infatuation with the old RAZR design that dominated the entire Motorola collection the past couple of years. Is my paranoia getting the best of me? I sincerely hope so.

No word on pricing, but availability is scheduled for the last quarter of 2008 which should mean any day now.

iPhone now #1 handset in the world by AdMob?s count

11/19/2008, 05:00 | MobileCrunch

Each month, AdMob, a mobile advertising network, rounds up the data from over 6,000 mobile websites and applications, analyzes it all, and releases their findings in their Mobile Metrics Report. In the September report, AdMob determined that the iPhone had become the #4 handset worldwide by count of ads requested. In the October release, the iPhone has skyrocketed all the way to #1.

Note that these rankings are not directly representative of sales numbers; while AdMob’s ad network is wide enough that these numbers can provide an accurate picture of usage trends, they don’t necessarily prove that one handset is outselling another.

September vs October Worldwide handset rankings:

Within the Top 5, the only major change is the iPhones sudden surge. Below that however, notice the BlackBerry 8100s sudden disappearance from the list - it has shifted down to #11 (not shown in image), sitting just below the BlackBerry 8300. Why might this be? Well, the 8100 is a good half year older than the 8300 - chances are, more 8100s are reaching retirement.

September vs October US handset rankings:

In September, we were a bit surprised to see the iPhone sitting all the way down at #7 in the US while it managed to snag the #4 spot worldwide. In October, the iPhone’s rank seems a bit more well aligned with it’s worldwide status, coming in at #2. iPhone requests have more than doubled, allowing it to knock the KRZR down a notch. The rest of the list moves in relation, though as with the worldwide rankings, we see the BlackBerry 8300 climb as the 8100 sinks.

One thing to note with all of these statistics, however, is that the AdMob advertisements embedded into iPhone applications are counted alongside web site statistics. If these same advertisements are not embedded into applications on all of the other platforms, wouldn’t the numbers be skewed in favor of the iPhone? Even if they were given the same real estate across all platforms, third-party applications are a far more significant part of the iPhone than they are for the vast majority of devices; if you own an iPhone, chances are great that you’ve installed (and regularly use) a handful of applications. Can you really say the same about the KRZR, or the Kyocera K24? Wouldn’t this, too, skew things a bit? I’d be interested in seeing how the results change when limited to data gathered from website ad units.

Other interesting tid bits from the report:

  • 29.5% of the traffic that AdMob saw in October came from a smartphone - 59% of that was from devices running Symbian, while 15% ran the iPhone OS
  • 77.7% of devices AdMob saw in October supported Polyphonic ringtones, down from 79.5% in September
  • As in September, the Danger Sidekick II is the only Sidekick device to break the Top 20, though it has slipped down from #15 to #16.
  • 62.8% of iPhone requests were from the US.
  • Most popular manufacturer by carrier: AT&T: Apple, MetroPCS: Motorola, Sprint: Samsung, T-Mobile: RIM, Verizon: LG

If you’ve got a couple hours to kill tearing through page upon page of statistics (now including stats for Latin America!), you can find the full report here.

Motorola announces the 5-megapixel VE66 slider

11/18/2008, 21:05 | MobileCrunch

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you took the Motorola ZN5, made it a slider rather than a candybar phone, and added 3G, you now have an answer: the Motorola VE66. Also, stop thinking about stuff like that, weirdo.

It’s not quite that simple, but it’s pretty close. Like the ZN5, it’s got a QVGA screen (albeit .2″ smaller, at 2.2″), 5 megapixel camera (though with LED flash, rather than Xenon), Stereo Bluetooth, a microSD slot, and WiFi.

While the official announcement fails to mention it, GSMArena reports that there will be two models of the VE66: One with quad-band GSM/EDGE and no 3G (headed to China), and one with UMTS and HSDPA 3G. No word yet on availability beyond “Q4 of 2008″.

Crunch Network: CrunchBoard because it’s time for you to find a new Job2.0

Motorola adds another 5-megapixel phone to the mix with VE66

11/18/2008, 17:59 | Engadget

If you like what the ZN5 brings to the table but roundish sliders are more your cup of tea (and when the alternative is a drab gray candybar with purple accents, we can't say we blame you), Moto's got the solution to the pollution this morning with the official announcement of the VE66. You've got that 5-megapixel autofocus cam with LED flash (as opposed to the ZN5's xenon) and image stabilization, WiFi, FM radio, Motorola's CrystalTalk noise reduction, and a navigation wheel for flying through song tracks. Interestingly, there's no mention of Moto's partnership with Kodak anywhere on the phone or the announcement -- but something tells us that won't have an effect on picture quality. Look for it to launch some time this quarter.

RIM working on LTE Blackberry for the Future

11/18/2008, 14:41 | Cell Phones etc.

To show the rest of the world that they?re in this game to win, RIM is putting together a team to work on an LTE-capable BlackBerry phone.

This is in anticipation of LTE high-speed data networks sprouting up in the near future, replacing the now standard 3G networks of today. If Motorola had it their way, we could see LTE deployment as early as 2009, though a more rational and conservative prediction points to 2011 debut. RIM, for their part, wants to assure the public that they won?t be left behind this time around, a position they found themselves in when 3G networks came around.

We’ve heard about plans for a 4G network from both Bell and Telus, so I guess it’s only fitting that mobile phone manufacturers get busy on the handsets. Let?s hope that this isn?t just pure propaganda and that they?ll definitely have one ready when the time comes. Given RIM’s reputation, I’m keeping my fingers, toes and arms crossed and praying to the high heavens that this bit of news is indeed true.

Looking At the Competition: The Blackberry Bold

11/14/2008, 12:09 | Smartphone Thoughts

Being so heavily Windows Mobile-centric, I find it interesting when I can get my hands on devices from companies that compete with Windows Mobile. I had an opportunity to play with a RIM Blackberry Bold earlier this week, and was extremely impressed with the hardware. I thought it might be useful to share what I thought was good about the Bold, if for no other reason than to point out to anyone from Microsoft, HTC, etc. reading this site that Windows Mobile devices are lacking somewhat in the area that the Bold inhabits.

The 2.66 inch, 320 x 480 screen was simply gorgeous - very crisp, with great contrast. It made everything look excellent - I think the Blackberry OS, for all its faults, gets many things right on the home screen - the indicator icons on Windows Mobile are huge in comparison, so even by making them smaller, things look sharper and more organized on the Blackberry home screen. The keyboard felt really good, although I thought the width of the device was a bit much - it's closer to the Motorola Q9h in width, while I prefer the more slender Blackjack II. Not a deal-breaker though, I'd put up with the extra width to get that screen. Device thickness and weight were reasonable.

Performance was very snappy - apps just flew, screens appeared and vanished quickly. I've always felt that other Blackberry models had a nice home screen, but looked like pagers once you dug a layer deeper, but the Bold has a pretty good second level as well. Video playback was very impressive as well - there was a Speed Racer sample clip that looked amazing, the best I've seen on a mobile device in a long time. The media player software was pretty weak though - it was a combination of VCR-like buttons and a DOS-like directory listing of videos. I'm spoiled by how fun and easy media browsing is on my Zune, and everything else pales in comparison.

I could only sigh as I heard my friend explain that he leaves WiFi turned on all the time, and still gets 2-3 days of heavy use out of it, because the WiFi is smart enough to stay in a super low power mode until it detects he comes home, then it connects WiFi and uses that rather than 3G. When he leaves the house, it seamlessly moves back to 3G. Now that's smart software! There were certainly parts of the software that screamed "I used to be wireless pager software!", but RIM has done a pretty good job sprucing up the look and feel of the operating system.

Oh yeah, it didn't have a high-gloss back that attracted smudges (are you listening HTC?). It really is a great hardware design. I'm sure if I spent a week using it I'd see more flaws in the software and hardware, but I have to say that as first impressions go, the Bold makes a good one - and first impressions are generally what sell phones to the public. I can't think of any Windows Mobile device that comes close to matching the Bold in terms of hardware, and that's really unfortunate.

I'm convinced that HTC in particular is so fixated on beating Apple in the touch game, that even though they don't have a great touch-friendly operating system to work with (Windows Mobile Professional is still far too stylus-based), they're ignoring the popular consumer market that RIM is making big inroads into now. When I hear a 25-year old female friend gush about how much she loves her new Blackberry Curve, a device I'd always perceived as a business device, I know there's a missing piece in Microsoft's consumer strategy - a very big piece. RIM has somehow pivoted with their product strategy just enough to allow the carriers to heavily promote Blackberry devices as being consumer devices, and based mostly on nice hardware design, consumers are buying Blackberry devices in big numbers. Microsoft and their hardware partners have to come up with a solution to this problem - and a good start would be a device that competes head-on with the Blackberry Bold and wins.

Samsung Takes Top Spot in the US

11/10/2008, 06:42 | Mobile Phone Blog

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung Electronics surpassed Motorola in the third quarter to became the largest mobile phone vendor in the United States. Samsung's broad device portfolio across multiple carriers, technologies and segments were the key reasons behind its growth.

South Korean vendors, Samsung and LG Electronics, both gained marketshare, controlling 22.4% and 20.5% respectively. At the same time Motorola, who has been the top vendor in the US since 2004, saw market share falling to 21.1% from 32.7% a year before. Nokia saw its market share falling from a year ago to 8.4%.

The research firm said overall handset sales in the United States defied the economic gloom and grew 6.2% from a year ago to 47.4 million phones in the quarter.
