T-Mobile USA Picks Yahoo For Search

11/20/2008, 02:48 | MoCoNews

It's not all bad news for Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) these days. T-Mobile USA has picked the company's OneSearch platform for its default search engine on mobile phones, InfoWorld reports. The carrier will be placing a OneSearch button on phones under a deal expected to be announced at the Open Mobile Summit in San Francisco later this week. It's a notable win for Yahoo, particularly considering that T-Mobile just released the first Google-branded phone, the G1, last month. Yahoo didn't say whether the OneSearch button would get any play on that device. Marco Boerries, EVP and head of Yahoo's Connected Life Division, told InfoWorld that Yahoo let Google take away most of its market share in PC search and that it's working diligently to make sure the same thing doesn't happen in mobile. Yahoo now has deals with 26 mobile operators around the world, which count 850 million subscribers among them total. T-Mobile dropped Google (NSDQ: GOOG) search for Yahoo in markets in Northern and Central Europe last March.

Irish the heaviest users of mobile phones: Ofcom (Reuters)

11/20/2008, 01:50 | Cell Phone Blog

Reuters - Residents in the Republic of Ireland spent the most time on their mobile phones and sent the most text messages per head in the world in 2007, according to a report which examines changes in the communications industry.

Original post by Reuters

Ello..can you hear me now..ello?

11/19/2008, 13:07 | Geeks's Corner

One of those days where it’s a sick day for me watching Eureka seasons one and two and my NCIS..all because it’s a sick day for me. Well, now I have over a few sites to rework, and well, Richie asked a question to me just earlier on of how to get a stable connection over at Shah Alam as many are cussing and swearing of even having a decent phone line connection, be it streamyx, or Celcom or any other cellular communications as it’s a black out area thanks to the military base nearby, and the lack of permissions or planning rights by Sime Darby for transmitter. This is a little break from me modifying my CHAT.NU Community Blog (it’s a multi site blog) and sort out those bugs in the system.I appreciate the break from my brain picking.

This is the actual transponder used by mobile companies for their Basic 2.5G systems and maybe the basic 3G (not UMTS 2100/WCDMA) which actually looks like someone connected the aircon piping over, and if you open it up…well …

It is basically a small little 2 inch thingy…which I dared not pry open the insides as I fear for the radiation that is still may be left in there. Notoriously, for your information, transponders and smoke detectors carries Curie (discovered by Marie Curie whom died of radiation sickness) which is an active radiation element. Unlike Plutonium or Uranium, it’s not that likely to kill unless it’s electrically charged up. These photos are CLASSIFIED in some places and if you ever touch those conducting cables in underground or above ground car parks like Queensbay Mall Penang or KLCC, you will get a quick headache within 20 seconds and 10 minutes to death as the amount of radiation , though may be only 50Watts is the equivalent of having your head inside a microwave oven set at 5000W! Ref point, 50W can transmit the same as over 7000 mobile phones.

In the end…you end up like this…(graphic images, not suitable for some)

Which is a a sad thing to see…death of kids and the more heart breaking… of the images of their grave yard. I was trying hard to focus on the windmill but kept on getting the blurr images all round. Spooky…maybe..just it is a grim reminder that some parents have to face, to bury their kids, way before their time.

Some take life for granted..and try to get rid of their own children, through abortion or what means, whilst some..actually love and wanted to have their own. It was thing I can’t get it out of my head. Someone’s Prince and Some mommy’s princess. In the end, in the age of technology, only memories goes by. I lost 3 brothers….and through unmarked graves. I lost mine too. And in turn, we carry on living like a living dead…waiting for us at the other side.Little Angels waiting for their parents to bring them forward. It’s a thing. I seriously can’t get a clear decent shot. All images, how mounted my tripod were….well, it’s something to remember.

In remembrance of those who left before us, Al-Fateha.God Bless their souls.

Seriously..I really need to get rid of these bugs!

Adobe, ARM Teaming Up to Optimize Flash on Mobile Devices

11/19/2008, 02:50 | Gizmodo: Smartphones

flash_iphone.jpgAccording to the MIT Technology Review, Adobe is working with mobile processor manufacturer ARM on optimizing Flash Player 10 and AIR for ARM processors. Why does this matter? Because ARM processors are found in 90% of mobile phones (iPhone and G1 included), not to mention set top boxes, PMPs, and gaming devices (like the Nintendo DS). And how will they do it? Adobe and ARM say they have three main areas they're working on to improve the mobile flash experience.

First, they're customizing the compiler specifically for the ARMv6 and ARMv7 processors, which will help speed up and smooth out communications between the processor and the app. Second, they're going to take advantage of the graphics subprocessors found in some ARM chips. Flash on desktops isn't optimized for any sort of graphics processor, but taking advantage of this on a mobile platform will not only help with the workload, but it will improve battery life at the same time. Lastly, they're making video compression and decompression better suited for the processors, so that it requires less horsepower.

It should come as no huge surprise that Adobe says Flash 10 will be running on ARM devices by next year, considering that they already announced plans for the software on the iPhone and G1. It will not only make it easier to view sites with rich web content, but it will also be easier to view and upload flash videos, and run flash-based apps. [MIT Technology Review]

Adobe Flash Coming to Windows Mobile

11/19/2008, 01:59 | Smartphone Thoughts
http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2008/11...-on-the-iphone/

"Adobe’s Flash Player is on 98 percent of all desktop computers, but it is still struggling to make the jump to mobile phones. If you want Flash on a mobile device, right now you have to settle for a compromised version: Flash Lite. But Adobe is committed to bring the full Flash Player experience to mobile phones, as evidenced by its Open Screen Project. On Monday, at its Adobe MAX developer conference, it will demonstrate Flash Player 10 running on a Windows Mobile phone. (However, Flash won’t actually ship on Windows Mobile until late next year)."

Adobe MAX has come and gone and during that time Adobe has announced that would release Flash technology to the Windows Mobile platform and even demonstrated versions of Flash running on Windows Mobile and Google Android. It is really interesting to see Flash running on Google's Android platform as these handsets are virtually brand spanking new. It is amazing to see how quickly big name companies such as Adobe are jumping on consumer smartphone bandwagon since the release of the Apple iPhone and Google Android platforms. Sometimes I wish Microsoft could inspire that kind of innovation and excitement in the mobile industry. It is an incredibly exciting time to be a smartphone user, no matter which device or operating system is in your pocket. However I am still annoyed that it has taking this long for Adobe to get around to bringing Flash to our handsets.

Toshiba G450: Mobile phone, Mp3 player, HSDPA USB modem

11/18/2008, 14:22 | Cell Phones etc.

What looks like a concept phone is actually a working device that?s commercially available in Europe. The Toshiba G450 is a cellphone, MP3 player and HSDPA USB modem all rolled into one uniquely designed mobile device.

Granted that almost any HSDPA-capable mobile phone can do any of the above, Toshiba gives the modern mobile phone their own spin which, suffice to say, is definitely one of the more peculiar looking products we?ve seen in a while. Based on a review done by IntoMobile, it pretty much does what it?s supposed to though the limited 160MB storage leaves room for improvement.

With a £140 price tag and a design that definitely goes against the grain of what we?ve grown accustomed to when dealing with mobile phones, I highly doubt that the Toshiba G450 will make a significant impact in the mobile phone industry. But that’s just me, how about you guys? Would you consider getting yourself the Toshiba G450 if it became available in your neck of the woods?

Adobe To Demo Flash On Mobile (But Only Windows). Still ?Working? On The iPhone.

11/17/2008, 05:59 | MobileCrunch

Adobe’s Flash Player is on 98 percent of all desktop computers, but it is still struggling to make the jump to mobile phones. (However, Flash won’t actually ship on Windows Mobile until late next year). Product manager Michele Turner tells me:

We will be showing the first delivery of Flash on mobile phones, on other platforms. You will see it on Windows Mobile.

Microsoft, if you recall, was also early to adopt Flash Lite for Windows Mobile, despite its parallel development of Flash-competitor Silverlight. So it’s not too surprising that it would be the first to run Flash 10 on Windows Mobile. Turner also indicates that an “Android port” is coming. (Update: In fact, it looks like the Android port is well underway. During today’s announcement, a demo of Flash running on the G1 was shown.)

But what about the iPhone, which famously doesn’t use Flash? (Although there’s been some talk of that happening). Turner will only say:

We are working on Flash on the iPhone, but it is really up to Apple

One of Apple’s objections to Flash is that it is a CPU hog and is not optimized for the ARM11 processors that power the iPhone. In what seems to be an effort to address that concern, Adobe will also be announcing a closer collaboration with ARM to accelerate the adoption of both Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR on ARM-powered devices.

Once that collaboration bears fruit, maybe we’ll finally see Flash on the iPhone. But I’d be willing to bet my iPhone that we’ll see it on Android phones first.

NFL Sprints to wireless

11/06/2008, 15:50 | Smart Mobs

The Wall Street Journal reports today that “Sprint Will Kick Off a Series of Eight Football Phone-Casts”:

For the first time Thursday, a National Football League game — the Cleveland Browns vs. the Denver Broncos — will be broadcast on Sprint mobile phones as part of the wireless company’s exclusive partnership with the league. That partnership deal is valued at about $500 million over five years.

Over the next seven weeks, Sprint will phone-cast the eight games that are televised solely on the NFL Network, the league’s cable channel. For the past three seasons, the NFL has struggled to persuade major cable operators to include its channel in their basic programming packages.

With the NFL Network is available in only about 40% of American households, Sprint executives hope the NFL games can do for their company what the league’s Sunday Ticket package has done for satellite-television provider DirecTV Group. Sunday Ticket, which is exclusive to DirecTV, allows dedicated fans to see every NFL game on Sunday afternoons, and has been crucial to DirectTV’s growth.

Cell Phone Prices

10/09/2008, 22:53 | Planet Cell Phone Blog

There are many things to consider before you a purchase a cell phone. One major consideration for most consumers is the price of the cell phone.

Understandably, cell phones that have very few “bells and whistles” will cost much less than a mobile phone that also serves as an MP3 player, a video camera, a camera and has a full QWERTY keyboard, although sometimes you can pick these phones up for relatively cheap if the wireless carrier is offering incentives or rebates.

What’s not included in the price of most cell phones is the wireless service to make phone calls and send text messages. Wireless plans can vary from prepaid accounts which allow subscribers to pay as they go (or use minutes) to family calling plans that offer multiple handsets for family members with a calling plan that covers all the mobile phones in the family.

You can buy a cheap prepaid cell phone at most large retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target and even some smaller drug stores. Convenient and cheap, prepaids are a popular choice for those that aren’t “heavy users.”

My advice is, check cell phone prices before you buy. Since it’s a buyer’s market, chances are you can find a better price if you search vendors before buying.

Podcasts Growth Steady

09/07/2008, 06:03 | Mobile Phone Podcast Blog
It is true that the podcast audience is growing slower than most expected, but it is still growing at a regular yearly clip. Mark Ramsey of the Hear 2.0 blog states that podcast audience is being held back by a variety of things that include the difficulty of finding podcasts that you would find valuable and worthy of your time and effort. I do agree, that it is tough to find podcast content that is valuable. I deal with that issue everyday in my work on the Zune Podcast content offering. I often have mixed feelings about building large catalog of podcast feeds as opposed to building a smaller catalog of the very best podcasts. I am leaning towards building a very large catalog that just has great discovery processes that include human editorial. I can really help people get to the very best content that will keep them interested in continuing to download and consume the content.

My strategy has been to included everything that has a fully functional podcast feed and content offering. The other part of my strategy is to only feature the best podcasts in my front page promotional spots. This has resulted in those podcasts doing very well on Zune. The issue is that my taste in podcast content will not always match with everyone looking through my limited selection of features every week. I try to feature a nice cross-section of great podcast content and it is driving a lot of video podcast subscriptions on the Zune platform. Zune users really love podcasts as it is FREE content and is driving large numbers of daily wired and wireless connections to the Zune Marketplace software client that holds my podcast catalog of about 6,000 podcast feeds.

I also agree that most iPod or Zune device users just don't sync up as often as we need for this industry to grow faster. I do feel strongly that the download sync process needs to get easier and more convienient. I learned this in my 2 years working on Melodeo's Mobilcast podcast to mobile phones position. This taught me that these podcast subscriptions need to live up on the internet and download sync can then happen directly to portable devices in cars, buses, trains and on airplanes. When audio and video podcasts can be gotten easily on a mobile phone or other portable device anywhere then this platform gets legs fast. What is interesting is that this could enable getting any kind of media content on the go via RSS enclosures.

The last point is that because of this lack of regular download sync is that many of the hourly and daily podcasts are just not being consumed very much on iPods and Zunes, but will see more consumption on mobile connected media player phones.

Podcasting will grow to over 60+ million users by 2012 and will have a strong advertising business driving it by then at almost a half a billion dollars.
