New MacBook Pro benchmarked within Boot Camp

11/19/2008, 16:00 |

Finally, someone with more money that I have (I want a new MacBook Pro, but haven't yet convinced myself to shell out the dough to replace my old yet trusty G4 12" Powerbook) has put the new MBP and those shiny graphics chips to the test, and drummed up some real benchmarking numbers in Boot Camp. It turns out to be PC World, strangely enough. And the verdict? Well, it's not quite so great.

The good news is that the MacBook Pro is faster than ever, and graphics have significantly improved. And trust us, any improvement over the old chips is a step in the right direction.

The bad news is that in a practical situation (like playing the Crysis demo, which is actually about a year old at this point), a MacBook Pro in Boot Camp at the highest settings isn't actually playable, and the 15 fps you might squeeze out of it on a good day still can't compare to the 50 fps you can get out of even average video cards in a Windows PC. If the graphics are turned down, it's a different story -- we've seen a new MBP run games well in Boot Camp already, so it'll play, but Apple still has a ways to go to be competitive with brand new games.

But let's keep this all in perspective -- it's very good news when you compare the new MacBook Pros to the old ones. Apple is at least realizing that 3D performance needs an upgrade in their units. Maybe next time around they can bring some software updates into the mix as well, and we can start to see some real competition in high-end performance.

Unpodcasting of Video Podcasts

03/23/2008, 10:03 |
I have been seeing an interesting trend with video podcasting networks considering making their video episodes available to regular video download-to-own distribution sites that don't use RSS as the basis for the distribution to these sites. I am not going to be specific, but it is an interesting trend away from RSS distribution of these shows. This makes me wonder if RSS is just not going to cut it in the long-run for digital media distribution. I am seeing so much confusion and lack industry wide consistancy of RSS implementation, thus causing all sorts of ingestion issues. Everyone has its own RSS tags that create duplicate entries and proprietary tag needs in feeds.

Is this the first sign that podcasting is starting to dissappear into just "Video" and "Audio" again?

Sears Launches Sears2Go

11/07/2008, 17:55 |

Not convinced Mobile Commerce is hitting the mainstream? Well check this out- Sears.com today announced the launch of Sears2go - a mobile commerce Web site which enables customers to find and buy select Sears.com merchandise from their mobile phone.

"In Sears' continued effort to innovate and serve our customers as they adopt new technologies, Sears2go makes it easier than ever to cut out the holiday shopping hassles and shop from the convenience of your mobile phone," said Ravi Acharya, Director of eCommerce at Sears Holdings. "More and more customers are using their mobile phones to shop online and Sears2go is completely geared for mobile devices with an emphasis on speed, usability and security. So, whether you're stuck on the commuter train or waiting for your child's holiday concert to begin, you can get your shopping done - ultimately leaving more time for you!"

Sears2go lets customers select products from a wide variety of categories, including apparel, electronics and computers, fitness and sports, jewelry, tools, toys and games with home delivery or in store pickup. After purchasing an item on Sears2go, shoppers picking up their order in store will receive a text message alert when their merchandise is ready for pick-up.

Many of the same features available on Sears.com will be available through Sears2go, providing a streamlined, consistent experience. Functional features, such as product search/browsing, shopping cart and checkout, gifts, product reviews, store locator, special offers and order status make mobile shopping just as easy as shopping online.

The site is powered by Usablenet, a NY based mobile partner for leading brands.

"We're proud to be working with Sears to deliver the convenience of mobile browsing and purchasing to its customers," said Nick Taylor, President of Usablenet. Usablenet Mobile is a fully managed service that leverages the features and functionality of a company's existing Web site and extends it to all mobile devices worldwide in less than six weeks, requiring no client IT or Web design resources.

Price confusion over Nokia 5800 XpressMusic mercifully ends (maybe)

11/19/2008, 17:11 |
It's probably fair to say that no one in Spain had a very good day on Friday when the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic showed up on Nokia.es for €429 (about $550), up from its earlier €279. Well it looks like the zaniness at least kind of has an explanation, though it's not one that's likely to cool any enraged heels. Apparently the base price of the phone was, and is €279, but "each country" can bundle it with whatever they choose, thereby upping the overall price. Sounds fun, right? So, in Spain, they've kindly bundled the 5800 with a €100 Nokia Music Store voucher and a 3-month subscription to Nokia Maps Navigation service. Presumably other countries can follow suit -- though these moves are apparently only valid through the holiday season, because the 5800, all by its lonesome, goes on sale in January for... you guessed it: €279.

Apptera Raises $10.5 Million To Expand Advertising Platform

11/19/2008, 23:33 |

San Bruno, Calif.-based Apptera said it has raised $10.5 million in an undisclosed round of venture funding. Investors in the round include: Lightspeed Venture Partners, Alloy Ventures, and Walden International. The money will go towards investing in the company's audio and visual mobile advertising network. Advertisers can use the company's ad platform and technology to insert audio advertisements within a call, and then follow-up with a visual ad. For instance, a person may call in to a movie phone service to hear when the latest movie is playing. An audio ad for a nearby restaurant may play, and if a person is interested, they can request a coupon or driving directions by text message. The company can also add an audio component to a text ad, which allows a person to click to call from an SMS. Henry Vogel, Apptera's president and CEO: "A lot of people are thinking about mobile advertising as the ability to send a SMS, or a WAP banner, but you are constrained in the richness and whether people have a data plan, but every device absolutely has a phone." Founded in 2001, Apptera already has customers such as AT&T's 1-800-YellowPages, AOL's Moviefone, MovieTickets.com, Bank of America's ATM locator, SaveMart supermarkets, MLB.com, RadioShack, GSI Commerce and SayNow's social music service. The company declined to say how much money it previously raised, and said it has fewer than 100 employees.

AT&T today launched the HTC Fuze, a Windows Mobile smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard and TouchFLO 3D touch screen user interface.

Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the Fuze is a compact, powerful smartphone with a smooth gloss black finish and unique faceted backplate. It features a sharp, 262K-color 2.8-inch (480 x 640 px) VGA touch screen. A full QWERTY keyboard slides out from the side.

TouchFLO 3D is designed for one-hand operation using gesture-based navigation. Customers simply touch, hold and slide along the screen tabs. A quick slide on the home screen activates the most used features such as email, text messaging, music player and camera. The "zoom in, zoom out" feature accesses the Internet via Opera browser for desktop-like webpage rendering.

AT&T customers can choose from popular platforms to access their corporate email. Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional offers integration with Microsoft Outlook information such as email, contacts, calendar and to-do lists.

Users can access and edit email attachments using mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint.

A unique business card application lets users capture and save contact information with the built-in 3.2-megapixel camera.

Users can access AT&T Mobile Music, an integrated, on-the-go music service. Customers can browse music with accessible tabs sorted by playing lists, artists, albums, songs and genre views.

CV (Cellular Video) accesses thousands of video clips - news, sports, weather, entertainment, premium HBO Mobile content and more - via streaming video.

"The HTC Fuze, with its array of connectivity features, provides our customers with the ability to choose the manner in which they communicate using the form factor they deem most appropriate at a given moment - all in a very attractive and sleek package," said Michael Woodward, Vice President, Smart Devices for AT&T's wireless unit. "It's a fantastic addition to AT&T's industry-leading Windows Mobile smartphone portfolio."

The HTC Fuze is available for $299.99 at retail stores.

HTC G1: Android Debuts, First Impressions

11/06/2008, 22:23 |
To begin, it must be noted the author is an iPhone addict, and duly biased. And, this review will pit the G1 vs. the iPhone in many regards. The photo shown here was taken with the iPhone (yes, the crappy iPhone camera).

Getting up and running was simple and fast: add the SIM card, power on, and configure the GMAIL account you want associated with your phone.

First catch: make sure the GMAIL account you are using is the one you REALLY want to use. After you add the account, there is currently no way to change it other than resetting the phone to factory settings. See the manual on how to do this.

After you have the GMAIL set, you are off and running. And playing. There are many features to check out, and the input methods are numerous: touch screen, track ball, full QWERTY keyboard and few tactile buttons to boot.

After some time cruising around the device, some initial thoughts came to mind:
  • If you don't like the idea of being forced to have a GMAIL account, don't get one. Or hack it!
  • Its much bulkier and heavier than I thought it would be; much more than the iPhone.
  • The applications available in the 'Marketplace' are very average, and seem out of date
  • Getting on WiFi is easy, but unlike the iPhone it doesnt pro actively ask you to join one
  • touch screen is fine, appears very responsive
  • adding additional email accounts is straight forward, no harder/easier than iPhone mail application
  • Feels much more like windows mobile than I would have thought.
  • Awkard holding it in landscape position (for your right hand) and using keyboard, not as nice as Sidekick, as the device gets in the way of itself
  • trackball might be overkill for everything but games. but I love it for games, and this is an important part
  • Camera is pretty solid, though not sure on exact method to snap shot (see photo on right)
Overall, good first effort. its apparent that the HW and SW is from different firms as its not totally tight. Its a PC, not a Mac :)

Haw haw: Static-charged balloon foils security camera

08/01/2008, 18:30 |

lamson1

Ah, William Lawson of Brooklyn, New York, you are a smart guy. I can only hope that your balloon trick shows up in future iterations of the Splinter Cell series. I?m getting tired of shooting the cameras out with a pistol. It wastes bullets, it?s dangerous, and it?s impractical for Sam Fisher to have to poke his head out just to aim at a target he could very easily disable with a little bit of static electricity. Perhaps he can start to carry a bag of balloons, string, and a large helium tank with him wherever he goes.

RIAA Gets Tennessee Law To Force Universities To Filter Networks For Copyrighted Content

11/18/2008, 23:44 |
After more than a decade of watching the entertainment industry (mainly the RIAA and the MPAA), one thing I've learned is that the organization never gives up in pushing its legislative agenda. If there's a setback in one area, you can be sure that others from the organization are eagerly pushing the exact same rules through some other angle. The typical MO is that they try to get federal legislation passed in their favor. However, if that fails, they switch to the fallback plans which involve international treaties and state laws. Both of these are great because they tend to get a lot less scrutiny. State laws are a bit of a pain, because you have to get a few of them approved to create the "groundswell" that makes other states jump on board, but changes to state laws can often pass through under the radar.

That appears to be what's happening in the effort to force universities to install filters monitoring their networks for any unauthorized transmissions. You may recall that the RIAA pushed strongly to get Congress to pass laws requiring filters. Basically, the entertainment industry first flat-out lied (yes, lied) about how big a problem file sharing on campus was, and that got some Congressional Reps (with plenty of campaign contributions from the entertainment industry) to introduce legislation punishing universities if they didn't filter their networks. Widespread outcry against that legislation helped water it down, but it appears the industry just moved on to state legislatures.

The RIAA is now celebrating the fact that Tennessee has passed legislation that requires universities to install filters if they've received at least 50 DMCA requests. Considering the massive number of DMCA notices that the RIAA has been known to file, this is hardly a large hurdle. The law will cost Tennessee taxpayers nearly $10 million in the first year, and another $1.5 million each year -- based on the state's own estimates. And for what? To put in filters that won't work, just to try to prop up an obsolete business model from legacy players in an industry that needs to learn how to adapt to the market?

Hit up the read link for a slew of build shots, and click on through for a quick video.

'Animal Crossing: City Folk': Slow, Boring, Lonely

11/19/2008, 23:26 |
Among the titles Nintendo highlighted during E3 this year, "Animal Crossing: City Folks" stood out. Previously a bestselling franchise on the Nintendo GameCube, the updated Wii version, Nintendo said, would take advantage of the console's Internet connection and new Wii Speak microphone accessory to connect gamers with other players near and far. The purported ability to take part in voice chats while interacting with other players in the game sounded intriguing; however, after playing the game I am more frustrated than impressed.

I'm Protesting Proposition 8 Tomorrow; Please Consider Protesting Too

11/15/2008, 05:30 |

Euphoria over Obama's win, followed by disbelief and despair over over Proposition 8's ban on gay marriage passing in California. I'll be out protesting tomorrow at South Coast Plaza in Orange County as part of a nationwide campaign. Please consider going to a location yourself. And if you're against gay marriage, please, some words to consider.

I sat on my patio last weekend listening to my neighbors across the street, in a small party on their roof, discussing Proposition 8. "I don't want them coming to my church to get married," said the most vocal of the bunch. "We don't want to encourage them." And, inevitably as a result of those terrible TV commercials, "We don't want them teaching that in schools."

Ironically, those who voted for Proposition 8 to keep our schools "safe" from the instruction that was never going to happen have now helped guarantee that gay marriage WILL be taught in schools. The struggle won't go away. It's a civil rights movement that will only get stronger, be a part of California history and will be taught to school children from years to come. And years from now, many people will look back on the struggle in the same way they view other civil rights struggles and think, "How could this have been done to a group of people."

Gay marriage is personal to me. "Them" gay people aren't some nebulous group that exists only in San Francisco. They're real people I know, with names like Ken, Jessie, Ted and Greg.

Greg, godfather to my children. One of the best friends you could have. Someone that deserves, if he should want to marry, to have the right to do so.

I simply don't get it. You can fight for your country -- just don't say your gay, and it's OK? And should you die defending your country, sorry -- no folded flag, since you can't have a spouse.

When I heard the news of the loss, one of my first thoughts was that I wanted all the gay people in American to go on strike for a day -- to really illustrate how many there are. Turns out, there's a movement now to make that happen, this Dec. 10, "No Gays For A Day." I hope it happens.

Somewhat related, last weekend, there was a fascinating piece in the Los Angeles Times by Jasmyne Cannick, a Black lesbian, on why she wasn't surprised that Blacks voted so heavily in favor of the proposition. You have to appreciate her honesty, as well as her realism of the challenge:

Even I wasn't inspired to encourage black people to vote against the proposition. Why? Because I don't see why the right to marry should be a priority for me or other black people. Gay marriage? Please. At a time when blacks are still more likely than whites to be pulled over for no reason, more likely to be unemployed than whites, more likely to live at or below the poverty line, I was too busy trying to get black people registered to vote, period; I wasn't about to focus my attention on what couldn't help but feel like a secondary issue.

It's hard. Watching Obama talk about gay marriage as a state issue; watching Biden in the debate with Palin say he was for partnerships but not gay marriage, it was disheartening knowing that was a compromise they had to make, just as Clinton compromised on gays in the military. Obama had challenges enough winning the trust of some in America without having to have support of gay marriage bogging his campaign down, which is almost certainly would have. I understood the compromise. It didn't make the taste less bitter.

So I can understand what Cannick wrote. I can understand, though I can never really feel, the inequalities she describes and has experienced. But if there was a proposition on the ballot that allowed me to deal with those problems? That allowed me to vote for equality? I'd vote for it. I'd hope anyone would vote for it and not think, "No, not until X, Y & Z" are fixed first.

Finally, I'll leave with a video from Keith Olbermann that's been capturing attention, where he speaks succinctly on the issue. Consider that about 1/3 of US states had laws preventing Blacks & Whites from being married as late as 1967 -- and as he notes, Barack Obama's own parents couldn't have been married.

Please consider showing your support at a protest tomorrow. If not tomorrow, then another time, in another way. And please reconsider your position, if you've been against gay marriage. There are real people, with real feelings and desires, who simply want the same rights independent of the fact that they share their love with someone of the same sex.

Ileana Buhan, a Romanian computer scientist, has recently presented her PhD Thesis at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. She is using biometrics to protect confidential information when it is exchanged between two mobile devices. This is a very innovative approach to security. Buhan’s biometric application will generate almost unbreakable passwords from photos taken by the connected users. Here is how it works. ‘To do this, two users need to save their own photos on their PDAs. They then take photos of each other. The PDA compares the two photos and generates a security code for making a safe connection.’ But read more if you’re not convinced…
