Internet generation jurors used to screens

11/08/2008, 20:01 |

The Lord Chief Justice of the UK legal system has opined that “it might be better to present information for young jurors on screens because that is how they were used to digesting information.” The Telegraph reported the concern in an article titled Web-savvy young make bad jurors because they cannot listen, says Lord Chief Justice. Here is more from the article:

Currently information is provided on screens to jurors, such as in complex fraud trials, but “not without difficulty and with great expense”, he said.

He added: “What about the defendant’s oral testimony and child witness complaining of an indecent assault which the defendant adamantly denies?

“What process aimed at finding the truth between them, and enabling a jury to decide where the truth lies, will be in place in 25 years time? What will happen to our oral tradition? Should it, will it, be forced to change?”

Lord Judge also conceded that it was inevitable some jurors defy a judge’s direction and make “private enquiries” into a case using the internet. In one case a juror went online using a Blackberry-device during a rape case, causing the conviction to be quashed.

Lord Judge said that he did not have solutions to these concerns. But he suggested that in the future the courts system must be “capable of development and adaptable for the future”.

EA announces Spore Windows, Mac system requirements

EA announces Spore Windows, Mac system requirements - Image 1

Electronic Arts, together with internal studio EA Maxis, have announced the system requirements to run Spore, though we haven't found any indication of what the bare minimums would translate to in gameplay.

The evolution, strategy simulator has been designed to execute on specific system specifications depending on the choice of your operating system and graphics system implementation. The requirements for Windows XP are as follows:
  • 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor or AMD equivalent
  • 512 MB RAM
  • A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
    • ATI Radeon:
      • 9500, 9600, 9800 and variants
      • X300, X600, X700, X800, X850
      • X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950 and discrete variants
      • 2400, 2600, 2900 and variants
      • 3650, 3850 and variants
      • FX 5900, FX 5950 (FX supported only in Windows XP)
      • 6200, 6500, 6600, 6800 and variants
      • 7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950 and variants
      • 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800 and variants
      • GMA 950, GMA X3000, GMA X3100
  • At least 6 GB of hard drive space
For Windows Vista, players will have to beef up their computer's memory banks to 768 MB of RAM, with all other specifications consistent to those required for running in Windows XP. Gamers on the Mac will have to make sure that their system's algorithm crunching muscle must be on par with the following:
  • Mac OS X 10.5.3 Leopard or higher
  • Intel Core Duo Processor (unknown speed rating, possibly 1.8 GHz per core)
  • 1024 MB RAM
  • ATI X1600 (X1900, HD 2400, HD 2600 supported) or NVidia 7300 GT (7600, 8600, 8800 and variants supported) with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100
  • At least 4.7GB of hard drive space for installation, plus additional space for custom content (storage space requirement subject to change)
Laptop users and gamers planning on running Spore on ITX machines (those with integrated graphics chipsets) may attempt designing creatures while in transit when installed on a mobile, lightweight rig with these specifications:

Windows portion:
  • Intel Pentium D 2.6 GHz per core, Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz per core, or AMD equivalent
  • Intel integrated graphics chipset 945GM and above (965 )
  • 768 MB RAM
Mac portion:
  • Dual 2.0 GHz CPUs or Intel Core 2 Duo 1.7 GHz per core minimum (may not run if below these specs)
  • Integrated Intel GMA X3100 minimum (any lower will present very poor performance)
The hard drive storage space requirements on Apple's side is subject to certain changes, so we'll be updating you sometime soon. Until then, it's time to prep our machines for  Will Wright's major, 10-year spanning global gaming phenomenon which launches on September 7.

Canadian Call Center Woes

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Here's an article from the Edmonton Journal about the closure of a Toronto Dominion Bank call center in the city, for a net loss of about 140 jobs.

Though this is a Canadian company shutting down a Canadian call center, there have been other Canadian call center closures that can be laid at the foot of the weak U.S. dollar.

Outsourcing to Canada (an important destination in the so-called "near-shore" outsourcing model) is no longer saving U.S. companies money due to the unfavorable exchange rates for the U.S. dollar.

A recent Datamonitor report covered on TMCnet by associate editor Patrick Barnard revealed that companies are truly starting to pack up Canadian operations. The most notable U.S. outsourcer to do so thus far is Cincinnati-based Convergys Corporation.

The Datamonitor report also cites a waning of interest in Canada in relation to the increasing interest in having Spanish-speaking agents on staff for the growing consumer base of American Hispanics. (Canada does not offer a labor force with a high percentage of Spanish-speakers.)

'Animal Crossing: City Folk': Slow, Boring, Lonely

11/19/2008, 23:26 |
Among the titles Nintendo highlighted during E3 this year, "Animal Crossing: City Folks" stood out. Previously a bestselling franchise on the Nintendo GameCube, the updated Wii version, Nintendo said, would take advantage of the console's Internet connection and new Wii Speak microphone accessory to connect gamers with other players near and far. The purported ability to take part in voice chats while interacting with other players in the game sounded intriguing; however, after playing the game I am more frustrated than impressed.

LG's fashionable Prada II (and watch) gets shown to the camera

11/19/2008, 18:32 |

Well, that didn't take long. Merely hours after LG's Prada II was treated to a dedicated microsite, along comes the hands-on photographs we've been expecting. CNET's UK branch was able to wrangle one in, and as predicted, the mobile didn't hesitate to pose for a few nice snapshots. Eagle-eyed readers will notice that it certainly put on a little heft since the first go 'round, but the slight downturn in attractivity is more than compensated by the inclusion of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Have a peek at the read link for more hands-on goodness, including a look at the matching Bluetooth wristwatch.

[Thanks, T.I.]

Nokia Still Leading In SmartPhone Sales

09/08/2008, 21:25 |

Nokia has remained ahead in sales of SmartPhones, but Research In Motion is growing faster. SmartPhones are important to both companies because they tend to be very profitable.

Still, according to Gartner, Nokia is still by far the market leader with 47.5% of the smartphone market on 15.2m units sold to users. However, its market share has dropped from 50.8% in the same quarter last year.

Research in Motion (RIM) has done well with BlackBerry sales growing by 126.4% to 5.6m units, year over year, and it has now overtaken Windows Mobile.

Apple is also gaining ground on Nokia in the segment.
