Apple developing always-on iPhone status indicators (Slash Lane/AppleInsider)

11/20/2008, 23:45 | Techmeme

Slash Lane / AppleInsider:
Apple developing always-on iPhone status indicators  —  Apple has conceptualized a means of displaying icon-like status indicators on the iPhone's displays even when the handset is locked and the backlight turned off, a new company filing shows.  —  The Cupertino-based electronics maker notes …

Internet Explorer Mobile 6: No Download/Upgrade for Existing Devices

11/20/2008, 10:50 | Cell Phones etc.

Those who are still holding on the notion that Microsoft will be releasing Internet Explorer Mobile 6 for download in the near future will greatly be disappointed to hear that it won?t be made available for installation on existing handsets. Citing that its “rich media experience” is too much for present devices to handle, an employee of the company has put to rest questions on whether the upgrade to Microsoft?s current ailing mobile internet browser will become available for download.

It?s really disheartening to hear such news especially since other developers have managed to come out with more capable applications and distribute them through the internet. It?s either Microsoft?s approach in developing their new internet browser is completely messed up or they just want to bolster sales of new Windows Mobile-powered devices by limiting the availability of Internet Explorer 6 on these devices. Anyway, I?m sure the general public won?t be too thrilled to hear this bit of news, and they?d rather install a 3rd party internet browser than be forced into buying a new mobile device just to avail of Internet Explorer 6.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic video review is probably longer than you think

11/20/2008, 00:32 | Engadget

We've seen a review of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and several videos of the device in action. What we haven't seen, however, is a video review... until now. Over at MobileBurn they've posted a series of four review videos of the touchscreen handset, and though it starts out a bit shaky -- the stylus is "not very good" and the build doesn't feel very "solid" -- the reviewer changes his tune by the end of the opus, and his opinion seems like it's evolved to a resounding "not bad." Hit the read link, grab a bucket of popcorn and consider yourself in for the night if you want to watch the full review.

A Few Highlights From The Cellcom Media Conference In Tel Aviv

11/20/2008, 00:13 | MoCoNews

Levi Shapiro, a wireless specialist and founder of three mobile media companies, sent in a dispatch from the conference this week, which he helped organize.

One way to antagonize Mark Selby, Nokia's VP of Industry Collaborations, is to use the term "UGC." At the conference, he told the audience "never use the term User Generated Content?it's disgusting." Selby, who came from a television background at IMG, encouraged the media industry to "look beyond just the consumption aspect on mobile. It is critical that we also deliver the ability to create, connect and interact." Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is in the process of transforming Symbian into an open platform.

In a separate panel, Jordan Berman, Executive Director of Media Innovation at AT&T (NYSE: T) Advertising Solutions, talked about mobile advertising, which is new for AT&T with the launch this month of banner ads on MediaNet. Jordan said he encourages brands to employ the handset as a response mechanism for non-mobile media like print, outdoor, in store, and TV. In Jordan's Valentines Day case study with 1800-Flowers.com, called 'Cupid Goes Wireless,' he said "AT&T drove flower buyers to the brand's WAP store where customers could order bouquets and send virtual flower bouquet greetings." Jordan called this a "whole new wireless way to stay out of the doghouse."

Readers: Blackberry Storm or Google G1?

11/19/2008, 23:53 | Product Reviews Net

Over the past mast there have been two cell phones that stand out above the rest, the BlackBerry Storm and the T-Mobile G1 Google Android phone. The G1 has been on the marker for about a month now, and it has not made the impression that all the hype promised.

The BlackBerry Strom has been out for almost a week in the UK, and is due for release on Friday, in the U.S. There is a worry that the phone will not do well on this date, as it is Thanksgiving. It seems to me that Verizon have not thought the release dates through.

Both phones have a touch screen, but the G1 also comes with a QUERTY keyboard. Looking at both phones the BlackBerry Storm has the edge in style and design. Both handsets have their good and bad points, but I think that the Storm is going to do much better than the G1, but remember; this is the first Google phone and better is yet to come.

Japanese Carrier NTT DoCoMo Developing Android-Based Phone

11/19/2008, 23:33 | MoCoNews

image NTT DoCoMo is developing an Android-based smartphone with an aim to launch it next year, a spokesperson with the Japanese operator confirmed to AFP via Business Standard. The phone could help the carrier compete with its smaller rival Softbank, which has been growing customers at a faster rate since launching the iPhone in July.

An earlier report from Japanese financial newspaper the Nikkei picked up by Reuters, said that the phone would be co-developed by DoCoMo's Korean partner KT Freetel. DoCoMo owns a 10 percent stake in the Korean carrier, and in the past the two have procured handsets together to get better prices. But the company's spokesperson said that they hadn't yet decided on any partners, nor was it confirmed if the handsets would sell in Korea.

The handset will be the first Android phone to be launched in Japan, where mobile devices are already among the most sophisticated in the world. DoCoMo lost out on the iPhone after months of talks with Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), which reportedly broke down after the Japanese carrier balked over the high revenue sharing terms that Apple was demanding to let it sell the handset exclusively.

But an Android-based phone may actually prove to be a better bet for DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM). Though Apple has helped lure subscribers to Softbank, it hasn't sold spectacularly in Japan, where users apparently still want features particular to the local market?including mobile payments and digital broadcast TV. It's been reported that Japanese consumers who have bought the iPhone also tote around a second phone that give them access to these features--which could be potentially included in an Android-based phone. DoCoMo and Google (NSDQ: GOOG), meanwhile, already have an "alliance" in place, when early this year DoCoMo agreed to integrate its search and email into its content service i-Mode.

The Nikkei also reported that DoCoMo would price the Android-based phone at about 20 percent lower than existing smartphones, since it would save costs on software development as Android is free.

Wal-Mart confirmed to be selling the iPhone 3G December 28th

11/19/2008, 21:29 | PhoneMag.com

For weeks now there have been rumors of Wal-Mart eventually carrying Apple?s iPhone 3G. Now it has been confirmed that starting December 28th, select Wal-Mart locations as well as a few Sam?s Club stores will be carrying the AT&T exclusive handset.

The iPhone 3G will be on select Wal-Mart store shelves in 2,500 locations. Sam?s Club will only be getting the iPhone 3G in 69 stores in the US. There is still no word on suspected pricing due to the fact that many would wait till after Christmas to pick up the phone at a cheaper price. AT&T is going to be supporting Wal-Mart as far as activations go. Sam?s Club kiosks that are managed by Radio Shack however will not be getting the iPhone 3G. Here is the execution timeline for the launch of the iPhone 3G.

Walmart will sell iPhones starting Dec. 28

11/19/2008, 19:00 | TUAW

Filed under:

Walmart will be taking a pass for most of the holiday shopping season with one particular item: the iPhone. It will begin selling the handset December 28, according to Jamie Townsend, of research firm JRPG.

Boy Genius Report also notes that the phone will be sold in some Sam's Club stores as well. The blog broke the news about Walmart's talks with Apple, but originally said the smartphone would hit shelves last Saturday.

Walmart seems to be capitalizing on post-holiday shopping fervor, with BGR's Zach Epstein speculating, "Won't people be happy when they find out Apple's handsets popped up at discount prices three short days after Christmas?" It depends on how meager Christmas is, I suppose.

The handsets will apparently be activated in-store. No pricing details were released.

LG Prada II has matching Bluetooth watch and microsite

11/19/2008, 15:48 | Product Reviews Net

The LG Prada II is no secret, but we like the idea that LG are getting behind their latest handset by launching a standalone microsite for the sexy phone. If that was not enough, there is also a matching Prada Link Bluetooth watch as well.

The LG Prada II has a 3-inch 400 x 240 pixel multi-touch display, 5-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, HSDPA, WiFi, and quad-band GSM connectivity. The cool looking Prada Link Bluetooth watch can sync to your LG Prada II handset.

Once synced, the watch will be able to show you your incoming calls and text messages. As yet there are still no details on pricing or a release date. One thing is certain, LG know that they have a nice phone on their hands, perfect for those who wish to look like a celebrity.

iPhone now #1 handset in the world by AdMob?s count

11/19/2008, 05:00 | MobileCrunch

Each month, AdMob, a mobile advertising network, rounds up the data from over 6,000 mobile websites and applications, analyzes it all, and releases their findings in their Mobile Metrics Report. In the September report, AdMob determined that the iPhone had become the #4 handset worldwide by count of ads requested. In the October release, the iPhone has skyrocketed all the way to #1.

Note that these rankings are not directly representative of sales numbers; while AdMob’s ad network is wide enough that these numbers can provide an accurate picture of usage trends, they don’t necessarily prove that one handset is outselling another.

September vs October Worldwide handset rankings:

Within the Top 5, the only major change is the iPhones sudden surge. Below that however, notice the BlackBerry 8100s sudden disappearance from the list - it has shifted down to #11 (not shown in image), sitting just below the BlackBerry 8300. Why might this be? Well, the 8100 is a good half year older than the 8300 - chances are, more 8100s are reaching retirement.

September vs October US handset rankings:

In September, we were a bit surprised to see the iPhone sitting all the way down at #7 in the US while it managed to snag the #4 spot worldwide. In October, the iPhone’s rank seems a bit more well aligned with it’s worldwide status, coming in at #2. iPhone requests have more than doubled, allowing it to knock the KRZR down a notch. The rest of the list moves in relation, though as with the worldwide rankings, we see the BlackBerry 8300 climb as the 8100 sinks.

One thing to note with all of these statistics, however, is that the AdMob advertisements embedded into iPhone applications are counted alongside web site statistics. If these same advertisements are not embedded into applications on all of the other platforms, wouldn’t the numbers be skewed in favor of the iPhone? Even if they were given the same real estate across all platforms, third-party applications are a far more significant part of the iPhone than they are for the vast majority of devices; if you own an iPhone, chances are great that you’ve installed (and regularly use) a handful of applications. Can you really say the same about the KRZR, or the Kyocera K24? Wouldn’t this, too, skew things a bit? I’d be interested in seeing how the results change when limited to data gathered from website ad units.

Other interesting tid bits from the report:

  • 29.5% of the traffic that AdMob saw in October came from a smartphone - 59% of that was from devices running Symbian, while 15% ran the iPhone OS
  • 77.7% of devices AdMob saw in October supported Polyphonic ringtones, down from 79.5% in September
  • As in September, the Danger Sidekick II is the only Sidekick device to break the Top 20, though it has slipped down from #15 to #16.
  • 62.8% of iPhone requests were from the US.
  • Most popular manufacturer by carrier: AT&T: Apple, MetroPCS: Motorola, Sprint: Samsung, T-Mobile: RIM, Verizon: LG

If you’ve got a couple hours to kill tearing through page upon page of statistics (now including stats for Latin America!), you can find the full report here.

Adobe Flash Coming to Windows Mobile

11/19/2008, 01:59 | Smartphone Thoughts
http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2008/11...-on-the-iphone/

"Adobe’s Flash Player is on 98 percent of all desktop computers, but it is still struggling to make the jump to mobile phones. If you want Flash on a mobile device, right now you have to settle for a compromised version: Flash Lite. But Adobe is committed to bring the full Flash Player experience to mobile phones, as evidenced by its Open Screen Project. On Monday, at its Adobe MAX developer conference, it will demonstrate Flash Player 10 running on a Windows Mobile phone. (However, Flash won’t actually ship on Windows Mobile until late next year)."

Adobe MAX has come and gone and during that time Adobe has announced that would release Flash technology to the Windows Mobile platform and even demonstrated versions of Flash running on Windows Mobile and Google Android. It is really interesting to see Flash running on Google's Android platform as these handsets are virtually brand spanking new. It is amazing to see how quickly big name companies such as Adobe are jumping on consumer smartphone bandwagon since the release of the Apple iPhone and Google Android platforms. Sometimes I wish Microsoft could inspire that kind of innovation and excitement in the mobile industry. It is an incredibly exciting time to be a smartphone user, no matter which device or operating system is in your pocket. However I am still annoyed that it has taking this long for Adobe to get around to bringing Flash to our handsets.

Telus offers up HTC Touch Pro for $299.99 (3-yr contract)

11/19/2008, 01:48 | Cell Phones etc.

Good news for HTC Touch Pro hopefuls! A week after popping up with Bell, the QWERTY-enabled handset is now officially available with Telus.

The Touch Pro showed up on the Telus website in the last 24 hours for $299.99 on a 3-year contract, $549.99 on a 2-year contract, $599.99 for a single year, and $649.99 contract-free.

It?s obviously more expensive than what Bell is offering, but if you fancy Telus as a provider, than the heftier price tag of the Touch Pro shouldn?t be much of an issue for you. At least you now have options as to where to get your Pro on.

MMS-capabilities coming soon to a Swedish iPhone?

11/18/2008, 23:18 | Engadget
The oft-bemoaned lack of certain, um... capabilities of the the iPhone is forcing individual companies to take desperate measures, it seems. It's not entirely clear, but MacWorld says it's confirmed with Telia that the Swedish-Finnish carrier's developing an MMS-enabling app for the iPhone. MacWorld says the app will hit the market in the next two months, which is great news for everyone in Sweden. If you live anywhere else in the world, however, you'll just have to continue on, rueing the day you ever encountered Apple's MMS-spurning, copy and paste-hating handset.

Update: Though the source is Swedish, it's entirely reasonable to believe that this'll spread across all of Telia's markets (and the world?). Thanks, commenters!

[Thanks, Martin]

iCEphone: One Touch Calling to Doctor, Hospital and 911

11/18/2008, 22:20 | Gizmodo: Cellphones

The iCEphone is a semi-in-production insurance policy that may or may not be small enough to actually fit in your pocket. A tri-folding WinMo phone (or "Micro PC" as the company calls it), the iCEphone has software that can not only walk you through common medical emergencies like administering CPR, but it can one-touch dial your doctor, the nearest hospital and 911 at the same time. That's why, at heart, The iCEphone is a good idea. But in this estimated $1,000 configuration, it's more than a bit obnoxious:

The iCEphone features a 3-inch touchscreen, QWERTY, dual SIM cards, HSDPA 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and a 3.1MP camera. So far, so good. But while a touchscreen and QWERTY is enough for most of us, they also stuck in a third panel to fit an extra 10 or so buttons so the handset can double triple as a gaming device.

The result is not only expensive and it's not only bulky. It's trying to be everything to everyone, and in the process it's become that three-teeted chick from Total Recall: Pretty great in theory, but unwieldy and intimidating in person...plus heavy enough to cause a bad back ache.

Who knows if we'll actually see it hit store shelves, but Medical Phone Ltd is confident that their iCEphone will be available in the UK by May 2009. [iCEphone via Unwired Review and BGR]

RIM working on LTE Blackberry for the Future

11/18/2008, 14:41 | Cell Phones etc.

To show the rest of the world that they?re in this game to win, RIM is putting together a team to work on an LTE-capable BlackBerry phone.

This is in anticipation of LTE high-speed data networks sprouting up in the near future, replacing the now standard 3G networks of today. If Motorola had it their way, we could see LTE deployment as early as 2009, though a more rational and conservative prediction points to 2011 debut. RIM, for their part, wants to assure the public that they won?t be left behind this time around, a position they found themselves in when 3G networks came around.

We’ve heard about plans for a 4G network from both Bell and Telus, so I guess it’s only fitting that mobile phone manufacturers get busy on the handsets. Let?s hope that this isn?t just pure propaganda and that they?ll definitely have one ready when the time comes. Given RIM’s reputation, I’m keeping my fingers, toes and arms crossed and praying to the high heavens that this bit of news is indeed true.

Photobucket Mobile Uploader Released for Verizon subscribers

11/17/2008, 22:17 | Cellphone9: The Cellphone and Mobile Blog

Verizon and Ontela have worked together to produce a mobile uploader for Photobucket, one of the world’s oldest photo uploading tools on the Internet. Signing up is easy, as all you need to do is use your existing Photobucket account and link to your Verizon phone line:

To utilize the application, Verizon Wireless subscribers sign up for a Photobucket account ? which can be created for free at http://photobucket.com ? and enter their log-in information to link their Verizon Wireless account to their Photobucket online photo album. Once the accounts are connected, the application instantly uploads photos already saved on the phone to the user?s Photobucket account. The Photobucket Mobile Uploader then automatically sends any future photos directly to the same Photobucket account. [release]

The service will be available for 13 handsets on the Verizon network, and we’re assuming that these are the faster 3G / HSDPA phones. The service allows for unlimited photo uploading for only $2.99 a month.

RIM working on an LTE BlackBerry? Of course they are.

11/17/2008, 20:54 | MobileCrunch

According to BGR, RIM is already crackin’ away at an LTE device so that it’s ready for launch whenever LTE officially goes live.

For the sake of the folks out there who don’t spend their lives memorizing every last mobile industry acronym: LTE stands for “Long Term Evolution”, and is one of the standards set to make up the next generation of mobile network technologies. In other words, LTE (along with competing technology, WiMax) is 4G. Sprint is siding with WiMax, Verizon and AT&T are going with LTE.

With that in mind, RIM’s rumored work with an LTE handset should come as a surprise to no one. With RIM’s US presence made up predominately by AT&T and Verizon, both of whom are backing LTE, not having a suitable device ready ASAP would be a huge misstep. Hell, I’d be willing to wager that they’re working on at least two of them - one touchscreen (a la Storm), and one in the more traditional candybar form.

Samsung Gravity hits T-Mo today

11/17/2008, 20:11 | MobileCrunch

T-Mobile said the Samsung Gravity would show up on Nov. 17th and, sure enough, it has arrived.

While the Gravity might not have the same pull as some of the bigger, less wallet-friendly QWERTY handsets on the market, at $49.99 (on a 2-year contract) it’s a decent pick for anyone looking to wear down their thumbs without wearing down their savings. It’s available beginning today in Aqua/White or Lime/Gray at the nearest T-Mo spot.

While the main draw would probably be the slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung has also packed in a 1.3-megapixel shooter (with video capture and 4x zoom, though we’re guessing that’s not optical zoom), IM support for AOL/ICQ/Windows Live/Yahoo, T-Mobile myFaves, stereo bluetooth (A2DP), and quad-band radio. For 50 bucks, that’s actually pretty impressive.

Asus Announces 800MHz 'World's Fastest' Smartphone

11/17/2008, 14:10 | Gizmodo: Cellphones

Asus is laying claim to the title for the fastest smartphone in the world, and there's little reason to doubt them. The news, though, is hollow: P565 with its 800MHz Marvell processor is objectively impressive, but underneath the oppressive, unflattering veil of Windows Mobile 6.1 it's not likely to blow anyone away. Carrying a dense 480x640 touchscreen to complement a solid range of specs — HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and 24fps video recording to name a few — the P565 is nonetheless fighting a software war with hardware improvements. On the other hand, if you're one of those odd folks for whom any superlative is an automatic selling point, then this may be your ultimate handset. [Reg Hardware]

Though nearly the entire pre-flight process has been tweaked to make use of modern technologies, one outdated aspect still lingers: the tickets. Every single time I fly, I find myself checking the location where I put my tickets once every 3-4 minutes. Are they still there? Did I remember to zip up after I last checked? When I pulled my hand out, did the ticket sneak out? I’ve never lost a ticket, yet I consistently fear that I will. It’s just such an abnormal thing in our daily lives - when else are we given something to hang on to for a few hours that is so easy to lose or destroy, yet so significant in the success of our plans? Lose that ticket, and there’s a good chance queues and regulations might just make you miss your flight. Miss your flight, and you’ll be making up for it your entire trip.

Fortunately, the times are changing. As handset displays grow to higher and higher resolutions, functionality generally limited to ink and paper becomes possible. Scannable barcodes can easily be printed onto just about any device made within the last few years, opening the door to ticketless boarding via your cell phone’s display.

Continental was the first in the US to embrace this concept, back in May of this year. Now American Airlines has hopped on board with the launch of their Mobile Boarding Passes program. If you’re flying out of Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), or Orange County (SNA), you’re given the option to send a digital boarding pass to your cell phone via e-mail. The boarding pass contains a QR-code-ish bar code - security will scan this, and you’re on your way. Just remember to juice up your phone before heading to the airport!

AT&T today launched the Samsung Eternity, a touch-screen phone with a full-touch QWERTY keypad and support for AT&T Mobile TV.

The Eternity features a black and chrome exterior with a large 3.2-inch touch screen with haptic support, providing subtle vibrations that confirm selections.

Samsung's TouchWiz user interface has specially designed widgets to customize the phone. A quick and simple "drag and drop" feature lets users instantly access their favorite functions, such as the clock, music player, instant messaging, photos and AT&T Mobile TV all from the home screen.

Three dedicated keys on the lower portion make navigation straightforward. It has a built-in accelerometer to automatically detect motion and the orientation to auto-rotation of the display for motion sensing games and photo scrolling.

The Eternity includes a 3.0-megapixel camera with video capture, Video Share calling, advanced messaging capabilities, including Mobile Email and instant messaging (Yahoo!, Windows Live, AOL), Bluetooth technology and a microSD memory card slot supporting up to 8GB.

AT&T Mobile TV provides streaming television content and sporting events from programs such as CBS Mobile, CNBC, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, FOX News, FOX Mobile, NBC 2Go, MSNBC, MTV, Nickelodeon, CNN Mobile and PIX.

Its browser can surf the Internet, navigate pages with the touch of a finger and support easy zoom-in and zoom-out capabilities.

"The Eternity brings the big screen to the palm of your hand," said Bill Ogle, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung America. "This touch-screen mobile TV handset is part of Samsung's TouchWiz line of phones and keeps you entertained and connected on the go."

The Samsung Eternity is available through stores or online for $149.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

BlackBerry Curve 8900 Gets Launch Date, $450 Price Tag in Germany

11/12/2008, 19:15 | Gizmodo: Smartphones

We knew it was coming to Germany first, but there's new info that the BlackBerry Curve 8900 will hit the streets there mid-November, and at around $450 (360?) price for a contract-free handset. German T-Mobile subscribers can even get it for as low as $6.20 (5?) with the right kind of 2-year contract monthly plans: lets hope that kind of pricing is echoed when it comes to the US (on AT&T or T-Mobile?) at a still-unspecified date. Nokia today announced the Nokia E63, a QWERTY keyboard messaging phone designed for business users.

The E63 can switch modes with the press of a button, from viewing corporate mail, appointments and intranet data, to viewing pictures, personal email and shortcuts to favorite websites.

Consumers can record and view photos and videos with the 2.0-megapixel CMOS camera and bright 320 x 240 px landscape display, listen to music downloaded from the Nokia Music Store via a 3.5 mm audio jack, or customize the handset through the thousands of applications available for download.

Files on Ovi lets users remotely access files from their PC, even when their computer is offline.

"Our research shows that people want a device that deals with both their personal and professional lives, but helps them to separate the two," said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President of Nokia. "The Nokia E63 is a new proposition for Eseries - a messaging device where people will be just as involved in their social network as they are in their business network."

The Nokia E63 will be available in ruby red or ultramarine blue. It is expected to begin shipping in the coming weeks for an estimated retail price of $250.
