AT&T today launched the HTC Fuze, a Windows Mobile smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard and TouchFLO 3D touch screen user interface.

Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the Fuze is a compact, powerful smartphone with a smooth gloss black finish and unique faceted backplate. It features a sharp, 262K-color 2.8-inch (480 x 640 px) VGA touch screen. A full QWERTY keyboard slides out from the side.

TouchFLO 3D is designed for one-hand operation using gesture-based navigation. Customers simply touch, hold and slide along the screen tabs. A quick slide on the home screen activates the most used features such as email, text messaging, music player and camera. The "zoom in, zoom out" feature accesses the Internet via Opera browser for desktop-like webpage rendering.

AT&T customers can choose from popular platforms to access their corporate email. Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional offers integration with Microsoft Outlook information such as email, contacts, calendar and to-do lists.

Users can access and edit email attachments using mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint.

A unique business card application lets users capture and save contact information with the built-in 3.2-megapixel camera.

Users can access AT&T Mobile Music, an integrated, on-the-go music service. Customers can browse music with accessible tabs sorted by playing lists, artists, albums, songs and genre views.

CV (Cellular Video) accesses thousands of video clips - news, sports, weather, entertainment, premium HBO Mobile content and more - via streaming video.

"The HTC Fuze, with its array of connectivity features, provides our customers with the ability to choose the manner in which they communicate using the form factor they deem most appropriate at a given moment - all in a very attractive and sleek package," said Michael Woodward, Vice President, Smart Devices for AT&T's wireless unit. "It's a fantastic addition to AT&T's industry-leading Windows Mobile smartphone portfolio."

The HTC Fuze is available for $299.99 at retail stores.

Etymotic Research ety8 In-The-Ear Bluetooth Earphones

I'm on the bus. There's a horrible, fingernails-on-chalkboard screech every time the vehicle comes to a stop. A big guy next to me is hacking up buckets of phlegm. A teenage girl behind me is whining into the pink RAZR plastered to her face. But it's OK. In a few seconds, it will all disappear. I plug the Bluetooth adapter into my iPod, switch on the square wireless earphones, and pop the buds in my auditory canals. Ah, the sweet sounds of solitude -- just me and my personal playlist. When I get up to leave, I usually stumble as the bus lurches, but with this setup, there's no catching a thumb on a wire, no earbuds flying into a stranger's lap. The buds stay put, and I'm on my way. Sure, they look silly, but my long hair hides them well. Anyway, looking a bit goofy is worth a blissful morning commute. -- Aria Pearson

Oh yeah, baby! That's it! Take it off so I can see all your goodies! The see-through case on this souped-up gamer invites voyeuristic geeks to peep inside at the sexy components that underlie its stunning performance: dual ATI graphics cards, physics accelerator, 4 gigs of RAM, supercharged Athlon CPU, and a liquid cooling system that practically eliminates fan noise. Setup was a bit cumbersome, but this rig makes games sing -- it runs Doom 3 with graphics settings maxed out at around 100 frames per second. And when we fed it less processor-intensive fare like Medieval II: Total War and Unreal Tournament 2004, it said, 'That's all?! Are you kidding?!' The only downside is the staggering price, compounded by the fact that you'll want to immediately upgrade to a bigger and better monitor to take advantage of its pixel-pushing power. -- Chris Baker

Laser-etched tattoos: don't try this at home, kids

07/05/2008, 06:32 |

It's not too often case mods cross over into the world of body mods, but when you think about it, it was kind of only a matter of time before people started using laser-etchers to give themselves immaculately detailed burn "tattoos." It's unclear what kind of lasting effects using an Epilog on your own skin will have, but don't be too stunned if it just peels right off and eventually becomes some weird, blurry scar. In other words, attempt this dumbass feat at your own risk. Oh, and you didn't think we would let this one off without a video, did you? It's after the break -- too bad there's no smell-o-vision to give off the nauseating scent of precision-burnt human flesh.

I Want an iPhone Interface on Windows Mobile

04/03/2008, 19:46 |

So, what do you do when a customer asks if you can create a Windows Mobile application that looks like an iPhone app? Well, if you?re smart, you?ll run. If you are not, like me, you?ll give it a go. Seriously though, creating a rich user experience with an iPhone-like look, feel, and interaction is hard if not impossible to attain on a Windows Mobile device today. The tools for implementing complicated business logic and algorithms on Windows Mobile devices are fantastic; want to interact with a camera or bar code scanner, stream live video, implement complex data structures or OO architecture, build an intricate ORM/relational database app, or do some other complex bit twiddling, that?s no problem on Windows Mobile. If you want to make a stunning Windows Mobile user experience ? good luck. There?s no CSS treatments you can leverage or Ajax goodness? you gotta build your fancy shmancy controls from scratch and that?s no fun. When I created the NewsGator iPhone reader (m.newsgator.com) I had a great UI toolkit to work with (thanks to Joe Hewitt), but no such luck with Windows Mobile.

So, in this case I spent many painful (but oddly enjoyable) hours writing custom controls to build a fairly interesting and attractive RSS ?widget? for Windows Mobile? there are some screen shots below. Yeh, I know it?s no iPhone app but it?s not bad…

As a side note, after seeing some of the demos of Silverlight running on mobile devices (Windows AND Nokia ? that?s right Nokia), I?m pretty psyched to see this technology flourish. It may be just what the doctor ordered. Flash Lite is another possibility but has been painfully slow to get adoption. Oh, there?s the iPhone SDK now too which is sure to enable some beautiful mobile apps. Good times!

Opera Mini 4.2 Now Available

11/11/2008, 20:53 |

Opera today released a preview of Opera Mini 4.2, the newest version of the world's most popular mobile Web browser that works on almost every mobile phone. With this beta release, Opera celebrates Opera Mini being the browser of choice for more than 20 million unique monthly users worldwide. As part of the celebration, Opera Mini users in the United States and Asia-Pacific region can now experience faster browsing speeds, due to the addition of an Opera Mini server park in the United States.

Information on Opera Mini is available at http://www.operamini.com/beta/ or simply point your phone?s browser to mini.opera.com/beta to download the beta version.

"The number of people using Opera Mini worldwide proves that there is a true revolution going on: people want to access all their favorite Web sites on the mobile phone they have today," says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera. "We constantly focus on developing a faster and more personal browsing experience. Opera Mini 4.2 beta is an update that takes mobile Web browsing to the next level."

Opera Mini 4.2 beta provides a more personalized experience with its colorful selection of new skins, improved support for YouTube and other mobile video services on a wider selection of mobile phones. Improvements in Opera Link allow users to share notes between their mobile phones and PCs, in addition to their bookmarks and recently-visited URLs.

"Opera Mini is a mobile application to be reckoned with," says John Jackson, Vice President, Yankee Group. "We have witnessed a 10% average growth in the number of Opera Mini users worldwide every month, with every indication that the trend will continue. As the browser keeps improving in speed and functionality and end-user awareness expands, Opera Mini's popularity to users worldwide should continue to grow."

Save energy, save money: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii energy consumption put to the test

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Ecos Consulting firm have published a joint study which focuses on the energy consumption of the current gen consoles: Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 3.

To a degree, we can call each of these consoles a powerhouse in their own right: they generate cool graphics, keep us entertained, and make life as we know it generally fun. But to call each of them a "powerhouse", in the most literal sense (i.e. in the realm of energy consumption), then that's the question, ain't it?

The NRDC has published the findings of their research in a document called "Lowering the Cost of Play: Improving the Energy Efficiency of Video Game Consoles". Based on their results, the PS3 remains as the most power-hungry - energy-hungry, rather - console there is. Then the Xbox 360, followed by the Nintendo Wii.

The document is a rather interesting read, and somehow gets every point across without having to step on fanboy toes. While I'd like to outline everything they've come up with, for brevity's sake (you can read the document yourself at your own leisure), we'll throw in this chart. The chart below speaks for itself.

NRDC - Image 1

What I like about this study is that it takes into account the different versions of the consoles in their lifetime. Also, they've given some suggestions - practical and reasonable suggestions - to manufacturers, game developers, and gamers themselves for ways to be more mindful of energy consumption.

Their conclusion is sound and simple, without being too uptight and demanding:

The single most effective way to save energy is to power down your system after saving your game if necessary when not actively playing. If you own a console with a powersaving feature such as auto power-off after a preset time, use it.

Ting Ting Ting! Note to all students out there readying a paper on video games - this could be a vital resource for you! Unlike the other study on the civic effects of video games, this document from the NRDC is merely two pages long, making it an easy read. And I strongly suggest that you do - whether you're writing a paper on it or not.

Patent Battles Focusing On Third Parties To Push For Settlements

11/18/2008, 21:11 |
Two recent patent battle lawsuits made news this week, and both highlighted one troubling aspect of patent lawsuits: patent holders trying to damage others beyond the company that infringed. Now, before the patent system defenders rush to post angry comments, this is not a new thing. It's been quite common for a while. Nor is it surprising. If you were a patent attorney representing one of these patent holders, you'd probably do the same thing: going after third parties is probably a good strategy to force the other company to settle. However, it does highlight how patent law is used in ways that clearly are outside of its intended purpose. That is, it's being used to punish plenty of innocent third parties by removing innovation from their grasps, rather than encouraging innovation.

The first case involves a patent lawsuit concerning Microsoft's Visual Studio. WebXchange claims it has patents that Visual Studio violates -- but rather than suing Microsoft, WebXchange sued three Microsoft customers, claiming that by using the software, they were violating the patent. This is clearly an attempt to scare Microsoft into settling, out of a fear that other customers won't use Visual Studio to avoid getting sued by WebXchange. Microsoft is fighting back, asking a judge to declare the patents invalid, but in the meantime, WebXchange has been able to drag Microsoft's customers into a patent battle, putting extra pressure on Microsoft to settle.

The second case involves Spansion suing Samsung for patent infringement concerning Samsung's memory chips. In this case, Spansion isn't just going after Samsung, but demanding an injunction that would block US sales of a variety of popular gadgets that use Samsung's memory chips -- including iPods and Blackberries. Once again, while it's unlikely that a court would order such a block, by dragging other companies such as Apple and RIM into the mess, Spansion is abusing the patent system's threat of an injunction to put extra pressure on Samsung to settle.

Motorola adds another 5-megapixel phone to the mix with VE66

11/18/2008, 17:59 |

If you like what the ZN5 brings to the table but roundish sliders are more your cup of tea (and when the alternative is a drab gray candybar with purple accents, we can't say we blame you), Moto's got the solution to the pollution this morning with the official announcement of the VE66. You've got that 5-megapixel autofocus cam with LED flash (as opposed to the ZN5's xenon) and image stabilization, WiFi, FM radio, Motorola's CrystalTalk noise reduction, and a navigation wheel for flying through song tracks. Interestingly, there's no mention of Moto's partnership with Kodak anywhere on the phone or the announcement -- but something tells us that won't have an effect on picture quality. Look for it to launch some time this quarter.

MLK Jr. Estate Threatening To Sue Vendors For Selling Products With Obama And King

11/18/2008, 18:32 |
The family of Martin Luther King Jr. has unfortunately done plenty to tarnish the great man's legacy over the last few decades, specifically in being overly aggressive claiming "ownership" of anything having to do with King, and demanding money from various entities that show King's speeches. A decade ago they were involved in a big legal fight with CBS for showing King's I Have A Dream speech. Who knew that dream was locked up thanks to intellectual property laws?

Now the family is apparently threatening to sue anyone selling any kind of merchandise that includes images of King and President-Elect Obama, claiming that if others are making money off of King's image, King's family should get a cut: "We do feel that if somebody's out there making a dollar, we should make a dime." So, now, apparently that dream is to keep making money off a speech that was delivered decades ago.
