05/02/2007, 07:31 |I'm Protesting Proposition 8 Tomorrow; Please Consider Protesting Too
11/15/2008, 05:30 |Euphoria over Obama's win, followed by disbelief and despair over over Proposition 8's ban on gay marriage passing in California. I'll be out protesting tomorrow at South Coast Plaza in Orange County as part of a nationwide campaign. Please consider going to a location yourself. And if you're against gay marriage, please, some words to consider.
I sat on my patio last weekend listening to my neighbors across the street, in a small party on their roof, discussing Proposition 8. "I don't want them coming to my church to get married," said the most vocal of the bunch. "We don't want to encourage them." And, inevitably as a result of those terrible TV commercials, "We don't want them teaching that in schools."
Ironically, those who voted for Proposition 8 to keep our schools "safe" from the instruction that was never going to happen have now helped guarantee that gay marriage WILL be taught in schools. The struggle won't go away. It's a civil rights movement that will only get stronger, be a part of California history and will be taught to school children from years to come. And years from now, many people will look back on the struggle in the same way they view other civil rights struggles and think, "How could this have been done to a group of people."
Gay marriage is personal to me. "Them" gay people aren't some nebulous group that exists only in San Francisco. They're real people I know, with names like Ken, Jessie, Ted and Greg.
Greg, godfather to my children. One of the best friends you could have. Someone that deserves, if he should want to marry, to have the right to do so.
I simply don't get it. You can fight for your country -- just don't say your gay, and it's OK? And should you die defending your country, sorry -- no folded flag, since you can't have a spouse.
When I heard the news of the loss, one of my first thoughts was that I wanted all the gay people in American to go on strike for a day -- to really illustrate how many there are. Turns out, there's a movement now to make that happen, this Dec. 10, "No Gays For A Day." I hope it happens.
Somewhat related, last weekend, there was a fascinating piece in the Los Angeles Times by Jasmyne Cannick, a Black lesbian, on why she wasn't surprised that Blacks voted so heavily in favor of the proposition. You have to appreciate her honesty, as well as her realism of the challenge:
Even I wasn't inspired to encourage black people to vote against the proposition. Why? Because I don't see why the right to marry should be a priority for me or other black people. Gay marriage? Please. At a time when blacks are still more likely than whites to be pulled over for no reason, more likely to be unemployed than whites, more likely to live at or below the poverty line, I was too busy trying to get black people registered to vote, period; I wasn't about to focus my attention on what couldn't help but feel like a secondary issue.
It's hard. Watching Obama talk about gay marriage as a state issue; watching Biden in the debate with Palin say he was for partnerships but not gay marriage, it was disheartening knowing that was a compromise they had to make, just as Clinton compromised on gays in the military. Obama had challenges enough winning the trust of some in America without having to have support of gay marriage bogging his campaign down, which is almost certainly would have. I understood the compromise. It didn't make the taste less bitter.
So I can understand what Cannick wrote. I can understand, though I can never really feel, the inequalities she describes and has experienced. But if there was a proposition on the ballot that allowed me to deal with those problems? That allowed me to vote for equality? I'd vote for it. I'd hope anyone would vote for it and not think, "No, not until X, Y & Z" are fixed first.
Finally, I'll leave with a video from Keith Olbermann that's been capturing attention, where he speaks succinctly on the issue. Consider that about 1/3 of US states had laws preventing Blacks & Whites from being married as late as 1967 -- and as he notes, Barack Obama's own parents couldn't have been married.
Please consider showing your support at a protest tomorrow. If not tomorrow, then another time, in another way. And please reconsider your position, if you've been against gay marriage. There are real people, with real feelings and desires, who simply want the same rights independent of the fact that they share their love with someone of the same sex.

WTF Happened To The Los Angeles Times?
10/28/2008, 07:37 |I was fortunate enough to have started my career in journalism during a real old fashioned newspaper war, one waged between the Los Angeles Times -- its Orange County edition -- and the Orange County Register. In 1989 and through the early 90s, the papers invested in people and newsprint to win the readership of the area. I was one of the many troops hired on, first with the Times and later jumping ship to the Register.
Now nearly 15 years later, I'm back in Orange County and wondering what happened. Yes, from various friends and former coworkers, I've heard of the cuts over the years. And yes, I've read about the decline of newspapers in general and some of the decline in particular for my two alma maters. And yes, I've seen the changes in both papers over time, when I've read them on occasion during my yearly visits back home. But now resident again, it's just shocking. Astounding is what I've felt after this Saturday's edition of the LA Times.
"Column One" is the main feature story that appears each day in the Los Angeles Times. I remember when that story slot was given its formal name in 1989 or 1990, during a major redesign. Though a major feature story has always been on the front page for as long as many could remember, giving it a formal name added extra oomph. Veteran journalists aimed to have a "Column One." When one of my coworkers -- a stringer rather than actual vaunted "Times Staff Writer" miraculously landed her article in the spot, we all gave her a huge round of congratulations, not diminished by our envy and hope to have such positioning for our own stories.
Column Ones could take weeks to complete, such was the research that went into some of them. They were almost always a Big Deal. And this Saturday's Big Deal? A feature on the woes of Wall Street Wives, having to make do with less but far more than most people earn: Wall Street wives had the richer, now they're a bit poorer.
I don't want to take away from anyone's particular pain or suffering. However they feel it, whatever the cause, however absurd it might seem to a distant observer, it is no doubt real to them. My issue is more about why of all the stories that deserved the attention of a Column One, this is what the Times chose?

Zune Delivering Real Competition in Portable Media Player Market
09/09/2008, 07:39 |The perception that radio is dead is misguided and has been for years now. Many bloggers and major media back in 2004 said, that radio was dead with the invention of Podcasting and that has NOT at all happened. The same is true for music discovery from broadcast radio.
Broadcast radio is still very important (huge audience) and will continue to be so for a very long-time. These new options don?t stop users from using the Zune players as just a digital music player, Zune just takes it to an new level. If the portable media player market is going to grow then there needs to be more ways new potential users can get into the digital music game.
Many may not realize it, but still as of today the majority of people in the USA do not currently own a digital portable media player and these new Zune features are a way of pulling this huge existing radio listening market into the digital music/portable media player market. The other reason to be positive about the Zune features in 3.0 is that it is always good to have competition in this kind of market.
I just don?t see why many bloggers and major media have to keep slamming Zune, even as it continues to innovate in this evolving space. It is still very early days for digital media and portable consumption of that media. Zune does not have to follow Apple to succeed, as I believe that Zune is quickly moving into the leadership position around innovation in social networking digital media discovery, wireless sharing, sync and radio to digital e-commerce.

Save energy, save money: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii energy consumption put to the test
01/01/1970, 01:00 |To a degree, we can call each of these consoles a powerhouse in their own right: they generate cool graphics, keep us entertained, and make life as we know it generally fun. But to call each of them a "powerhouse", in the most literal sense (i.e. in the realm of energy consumption), then that's the question, ain't it?
The NRDC has published the findings of their research in a document called "Lowering the Cost of Play: Improving the Energy Efficiency of Video Game Consoles". Based on their results, the PS3 remains as the most power-hungry - energy-hungry, rather - console there is. Then the Xbox 360, followed by the Nintendo Wii.
The document is a rather interesting read, and somehow gets every point across without having to step on fanboy toes. While I'd like to outline everything they've come up with, for brevity's sake (you can read the document yourself at your own leisure), we'll throw in this chart. The chart below speaks for itself.

What I like about this study is that it takes into account the different versions of the consoles in their lifetime. Also, they've given some suggestions - practical and reasonable suggestions - to manufacturers, game developers, and gamers themselves for ways to be more mindful of energy consumption.
Their conclusion is sound and simple, without being too uptight and demanding:
The single most effective way to save energy is to power down your system after saving your game if necessary when not actively playing. If you own a console with a powersaving feature such as auto power-off after a preset time, use it.
Ting Ting Ting! Note to all students out there readying a paper on video games - this could be a vital resource for you! Unlike the other study on the civic effects of video games, this document from the NRDC is merely two pages long, making it an easy read. And I strongly suggest that you do - whether you're writing a paper on it or not.

Look, here's what you need to do: reach into the appropriate pocket on your personage, take out your phone, and throw it into the nearest wall. It sucks. The N70 from Lanye (or ChinaKing, or... somebody from China), which we've drooled over previously, is a candybar phone with a 2.4-inch screen, Bluetooth 2.0, and a little bit of dual-band GSM. Oh, and a built-in projector. And an interface that almost perfectly mirrors that of the iPhone with the addition of voice recording and MMS. It's awesome, and it's now available for import for a mere $345. A bargain at any price.[Thanks, Andrew]

Samsung Gravity hits T-Mo today
11/17/2008, 20:11 |
T-Mobile said the Samsung Gravity would show up on Nov. 17th and, sure enough, it has arrived.
While the Gravity might not have the same pull as some of the bigger, less wallet-friendly QWERTY handsets on the market, at $49.99 (on a 2-year contract) it’s a decent pick for anyone looking to wear down their thumbs without wearing down their savings. It’s available beginning today in Aqua/White or Lime/Gray at the nearest T-Mo spot.
While the main draw would probably be the slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung has also packed in a 1.3-megapixel shooter (with video capture and 4x zoom, though we’re guessing that’s not optical zoom), IM support for AOL/ICQ/Windows Live/Yahoo, T-Mobile myFaves, stereo bluetooth (A2DP), and quad-band radio. For 50 bucks, that’s actually pretty impressive.

11/19/2008, 23:33 |San Bruno, Calif.-based Apptera said it has raised $10.5 million in an undisclosed round of venture funding. Investors in the round include: Lightspeed Venture Partners, Alloy Ventures, and Walden International. The money will go towards investing in the company's audio and visual mobile advertising network. Advertisers can use the company's ad platform and technology to insert audio advertisements within a call, and then follow-up with a visual ad. For instance, a person may call in to a movie phone service to hear when the latest movie is playing. An audio ad for a nearby restaurant may play, and if a person is interested, they can request a coupon or driving directions by text message. The company can also add an audio component to a text ad, which allows a person to click to call from an SMS. Henry Vogel, Apptera's president and CEO: "A lot of people are thinking about mobile advertising as the ability to send a SMS, or a WAP banner, but you are constrained in the richness and whether people have a data plan, but every device absolutely has a phone." Founded in 2001, Apptera already has customers such as AT&T's 1-800-YellowPages, AOL's Moviefone, MovieTickets.com, Bank of America's ATM locator, SaveMart supermarkets, MLB.com, RadioShack, GSI Commerce and SayNow's social music service. The company declined to say how much money it previously raised, and said it has fewer than 100 employees.

Toshiba Satellite P100-ST9612 Laptop

On a recent fact-checking mission for Wired, I was called upon to infiltrate the depths of several online 3-D games. Thank goodness I had this baby as my gaming rig. My supercute blonde avatar looked even more buxom on the 17-inch, 1,680 x 1,050-pixel screen, while the 2 gigs of RAM let me simultaneously surf the Web and storm Virtual Laguna Beach-heads. It was also perfect for perusing other media, ranging from DVDs to YouTube clips, while a pair of integrated Harman Kardon speakers handled audio output deftly. Too bad this notebook is way expensive and ungainly (huge 16 x 11-inch footprint). But when I'm fighting in World of Warcraft or just living my Second Life, the Satellite is my wingman of choice.
