WIRED Gadget Lab [DEC 26, 2006]

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

This is it, the final countdown!

2006 is fast coming to an end, and so is the Gadget Lab. Whoa, whoa, whoa -- put down that RAZR! Don't hurt yourself. The G-Lab crew is taking a break to re-tool, re-work, re-write, and re-format. We're cooking up a new and improved newsletter that'll rock your world. It'll be ready to roll later in aught-seven -- we'll keep you posted on progress.

In the meantime, worry not: The G-Lab crew will be back in a couple of weeks (just in time for that gadget-orgy overload known as CES) in the form of a brand-spankin'-new blog. It will totally rule, trust us. We'll have all the gadget reviews you desire, along with the clever writing you love, plus a few other surprises we'll reveal soon enough. And if you need something to tide you over till then (and maybe help you recover from that wickedly decadent New Year's party), tune in Wednesday, January 3, at 8 pm to check out the premiere of Wired Science, our very own, very new, and very wired TV show. Check here
for more details.

Since we'll be on a brief hiatus till then, we've got a double-barrel blast of reviews to appease your gadget lust. First up is an almost supernatural gaming PC, a smartphone with some superior styling, and a set of wireless earbuds that make riding public transit almost bearable. Next is an LCD TV suitable for a Sith Lord, the ideal online gaming companion, and a camera perfect for taking shots while, uh, taking shots. Starting January 8, we'll be running full-steam ahead on our new URL: blog.wired.com/gadgets. Until then, you stay classy, G-Labbers! -- Daniel Dumas

Samsung Epix SGH-i907 gets reviewed: it's a mixed bag

10/28/2008, 14:46 |

The Samsung Epix, as it's known on AT&T, recently joined the herd of others cluttering up the carrier's shelves after being known elsewhere for the longest time as the SGH-i907. For those teetering on a purchase, the cats at Pocketnow have some valuable insight you should probably chew on first. For starters, they found the screen to be stout and the optical joystick to be "fantastic," though the dearth of in-box amenities was a bit of a letdown. On a very positive note, the reviewer never once had to initiate a soft reboot, and the ginormous 1800mAh battery got him through a solid 1.5 days of heavy usage before calling it quits. Unfortunately, the lackluster software suite was the Achilles' heel; critics found that Samsung's Windows Mobile overlays and additions were ho hum at best, and the complete omission of a soft reset hole was just unacceptable. The bottom line? You should probably give this one a handle in-store before buying blind -- as lovely as some aspects are, you don't want to buy into a device that's frustrating to use.

Google Voice Search: Worthy of the iPhone's Bottom Row

11/18/2008, 23:22 |
The new voice-actived Google Mobile app for iPhone is now available. For those who missed the news stories that -- somewhat prematurely -- predicted its arrival last Friday, it basically lets you say any search term or phrase into your iPhone and get search results within seconds -- even GPS-aware localized responses. So ... is it any good? Wow. That's right, wow. I mean, yeah, it's that good. I've been an iPhone owner since day one, upgraded to the 3G model, and this is the first application that's inspired me to remove one of the four core bottom applications on my home screen.

Wikipedia Updates Blazing Fast

01/10/2008, 07:08 |

I was just watching Jay Leno doing a Q&A session with his audience.  Someone asked him who was his least favorite guest… he answered Ken Wahl.  So I googled poor Ken and in a few seconds landed on his Wikipedia entry and right in the entry was the following:

“On January 9, 2008 Jay Leno stated that he was his least favorite guest ever on the Tonight Show, adding (lightheardedly) that Wahl was “a pain in the ass.”  Check it out.
Wow! That is pretty impressive and is a great example of the power and immediacy of user generated content!

A Shared, Interinstitutional Undergraduate Minor Program in Computational Science

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Nine Ohio higher education institutions combined expertise to implement an interinstitutional, competency-based undergraduate minor curriculum in computational science. The program, which began in Autumn 2007, is part of an National Science Foundation Cyberinfrastructure Team Award and the new, statewide virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science. Key program elements include the definition of the program's interdisciplinary competency requirements, sharable instructional modules, and interinstitutional agreements for cross registration. Many courses are offered remotely, so students can access computational science instruction likely unavailable at their home institutions. The program is a model for interdisciplinary, interinstitutional activities that provide the expertise required to advance the application of computational methods to new discoveries in science and engineering.

Zune Springs Ahead To 2.5 Update

05/06/2008, 11:18 |
I have been working late tonight at Zune working on getting the new spring update to Zune users. The update included the release of NBC and MTV TV show content in the Zune Marketplace. I am a little loopy now as it has been many late nights here over the past month getting ready for this release. I have been doing the content programming of these new TV shows and podcasts.

I have also been working with NBC and MTV to get the marketing pieces and content offerings together for this launch. I think this is a big step for the Zune as it moves us into competing with iTunes directly with top quality video content.

A couple of highlights for the new release:
- Zune Cards now go to the device: listen to your friends music recommendations on-the-go.
- The social is now in the client.
- Mini-feeds keeping you up-to-date on all your friends music at Zune.net.
- Enhanced friends search.
- Reputation badges for passionate promoters of entertainment they love.
- New metadata editing tools
- Gapless playback (great for live concerts!!)
- The inclusion of NBC in our launch video partner list: get The Office, Heroes and 30 Rock here!
- An incredible line up of shows from MTV, Comedy Central, Adult Swim and Vh1
- Over 800 shows at launch in the Zune Video Store
- Integration with Windows Live Messenger

11/19/2008, 16:09 |

The Chicago Tribune gives us an update on the two young men featured in Hoop Dreams, the award-winning documentary about high school basketball stars trying to make their way through life and, hopefully, to the NBA.

Gates, the reserved one, has become an authoritative force who leads a church in the Cabrini area. He is married with four kids. Agee, a spirited charmer, doesn't have a regular job but is launching a line of "Hoop Dreams" apparel. He has five kids by five different women.

Agee also spends time working on his non-profit foundation that works with underprivileged kids. Hoop Dreams is available in its entirety for US viewing on Hulu.
