Contest: can you be Yahoo?s next CEO?

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites, Features, Contests

Could you be the next Jerry YangBeing a CEO of a major brand on the net isn’t easy.  Getting the job is even harder, that is where Gadgetell comes in.  By entering our contest, you’ll earn our public recommendation to Yahoo!‘s board for the open CEO position.  Warm up those golf clubs, here is what we think Yahoo! needs:

To be the next CEO at Yahoo!, we believe the company needs a big personality.  Google has the rollerblading wonder twins, MS now has almost larger-than-life Ballmer and Apple’s got a guy with a closet full of black mock turtlenecks.  While we don’t believe having rollerblades, being nutty or sticking to one outfit is a prerequisite, here is what we do think is:

Qualifications:

  • Yahoo! needs some life pumped back in.  The CEO needs to be able to stand up and say this is why we have the largest user base.  This is what makes us #1 and why we should be kicking some royal tush, no groveling for MS to come and vacuum this mess up.
  • Vision.  If you are picked as CEO, you need to have a vision of where you can take Yahoo! leveraging things like popularity and its awesome AJAX library.
  • Openness.  As the CEO you need to be clear with your vision and show us some goods.  You’ll have to walk the tightrope of being open while still offering us surprises now and then (see the wiki on Steve Jobs for reference).
  • Channel Kenny Rogers.  For this CEO job, you have to know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em.  A buyout may become a real possibility at some point and you’ve got to know when to pull the trigger.  If it helps, sing the song a few times in a karaoke bar just to get in the groove.  Yang wouldn’t take our advice, maybe you will.

Enter to win

Sounds easy enough right?  What is awesome about Yahoo! is I’ve found people love different things about it.  So, here is the contest part.  If you believe you are up the challenge, here is what we need:

  • leave a comment below citing 3 things you’d do on your first day on the job to signal Yahoo!s return to dominance.  Impress us.  Wow us.  Make Robert Scoble cry (love ya big guy).  Show us that you’ve got the moxy to get Gadgetell’s nod.
  • In our vast expertise, the editors at Gadgetell will review the entrants and pick one winner based almost blindly on who can best lead Yahoo! to being a player once more.  We’ll post the results on Friday and send Yahoo! our best candidate for the job.
  • You’re still waiting?  Get to commenting!

This is your chance to earn some big bucks, get some free perks (if nothing more than a year’s supply of Yahoo! stickers), and national attention if you are selected by Yahoo!.  Gadgetell is proud to sponsor this contest.

Fine print: you must be 18 to enter, no purchase necessary to enter, Gadgetell really has no say in who Yahoo! picks as CEO, we can merely suggest on quite possibly deaf ears - I mean they’ve never listened to us before, but that shouldn’t stop us from trying, right?  We strongly suspect there will be a drug test involved, crack heads need not apply.  Thanks to Dougie B for getting me thinking about Yang’s replacement.

Asus still sticking with the whole 7-inch screen thing

08/01/2008, 17:30 |

2719485813_60c8ec7ebb_o

The Asus Eee line of 7-inch netbooks appears to be alive and kicking, thanks to some images over on Eee PC News (in German). It?s believed that the Eee PC 701SD will come in three flavors (see this leaked slide); one marked ?701SD(30G HDD)?, one simply marked ?701SD?, and one marked ?701SD-4G?, so we?ve got one with a 30GB standard hard drive, one with a 4GB flash drive, and one with who-knows-what.

Aside from that, Laptop notes some subtle updates in the form of a chassis similar to the 901 series (except for the round edges), a new logo on the lid, slightly separated touchpad buttons, and the assumption that these machines will use Intel?s Atom processor. I?d really like to see the screen resolution get pushed to at least 1024 pixels wide versus the current crop of 7-inchers? 800 pixel wide resolution. It just makes so much more sense for web browsing.

More detailed specs, pricing, and launch dates are yet to be revealed but, hey, Asus has plans to release a total of 23 different models when all is said and done. So maybe we?ll just see these falling into our laps, rapid-fire style.

AT&T to Acquire Centennial

11/10/2008, 06:32 |
The consolidation in the wireless industry continues. Fresh off the news that Verizon's acquisition of Alltel is likely to go through, AT&T is also acquiring a smaller player.

According to the AP and Mercury News, AT&T has agreed to acquire Centennial Communications (NASDAQ: CYCL) for a cash deal of $944 million. The deal will add approximately 1.1 million customers to its subscriber base. Centennial has operations in rural areas of the Midwest and Southeast United States, along with Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

AT&T hopes the deal will close by the second quarter of 2009.

Christian Science Monitor Drops Daily Pub, Goes To Web

10/28/2008, 23:10 |
Somewhat related to my post about the LA Times death watch, the Christian Science Monitor has announced it will no longer publish a daily print paper in 2009. You can still get it weekly, but the plan is to move operations more heavily to the web. It's apparently the first US national daily to drop daily print for online. I like this from the AP:
The Monitor's circulation has fallen from a peak of 223,000 in 1970 to about 50,000 now, while its online traffic has soared. The newspaper gets about 5 million page-views per month, compared with about 4 million five years ago and 1 million a decade ago.
But lest the web seem a savior, there's also this:
Citi Investment Research analyst Catriona Fallon wrote Monday that she expects newspapers' revenue from classified, national and retail advertising to continue falling through 2009. And, in the context of initiating coverage of three major newspaper publishers -- Gannett Co., The New York Times Co. and The McClatchy Co. -- she said online revenue is years away from offsetting declines in print.

Apple TV update 2.3 released

11/20/2008, 03:48 |

Apple has just released software update 2.3 for the Apple TV. Right now, we don't have the change log, but we'll update the post as soon as we get more information.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Apple_TV_Update_2_3_removes_Boxee_Hack; It is important to know that as with all other Apple TV firmware updates, running the update WILL remove any non-Apple TV software. So if you have installed the USB boxee hack you might want to wait on running the update.

Apple TV will eventually prompt you to run the automatic update, so boxee or XBMC users might want to check out the XBMC.org forums for information on disabling automatic updates.

If you are not using any additional software and would like to download this new update, you can do so by visiting Settings > General > Software Update from the main Apple TV menu. If you notice any new features, be sure to let us know in the comments.

Update: Apple has now posted a change log on their website. According to the knowledge base article, the following aspects of Apple TV have been updated:

  • AirTunes Streaming from Apple TV - Music can be streamed via AirTunes to Airport Express speakers or other Apple TVs in your house.
  • Third-party Remote Controls - Apple TV can now learn other remote controls and use them in addition to the Apple Remote.
  • Playlists - Playlists in iTunes that contain Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, and Music Videos can now be seen on Apple TV.
  • Music Volume Control - Support for volume control in Music.

Thanks for the tip, Jeff.

LG's fashionable Prada II (and watch) gets shown to the camera

11/19/2008, 18:32 |

Well, that didn't take long. Merely hours after LG's Prada II was treated to a dedicated microsite, along comes the hands-on photographs we've been expecting. CNET's UK branch was able to wrangle one in, and as predicted, the mobile didn't hesitate to pose for a few nice snapshots. Eagle-eyed readers will notice that it certainly put on a little heft since the first go 'round, but the slight downturn in attractivity is more than compensated by the inclusion of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Have a peek at the read link for more hands-on goodness, including a look at the matching Bluetooth wristwatch.

[Thanks, T.I.]

Wireless Sharing of Video Podcasts in Zune 2.5 Update

06/01/2008, 23:16 |
Here is a little known COOL new feature to the Zune Podcast support in the recent 2.5 firmware update. This feature is REVOLUTIONARY and I am surprised that it has not been blogged about before now, but you can now send video podcast episodes to other Zune devices using its built-in WiFi radio. This means that if you have found a cool episode from the Best of YouTube podcast that you can send it to a fellow Zune user and then that user can watch that episode on their device and subscribe to it all in the Zune device software. While the video podcast episode is playing - just click and hold the middle of the Zune touch pad until the subscribe screen pops up. Then click on "subscribe" and when you next sync your Zune it will add a new subscription to your "Collection" area. I think that is way cool and nothing you can do in an iPod.

A Matter of Loaf and Death

11/19/2008, 15:17 |

A Matter of Loaf and Death, the Wallace and Gromit short formerly known as Trouble At' Mill, will be shown on the Beeb in the UK at the end of December.

In this new masterpiece viewers will catch up with Wallace and Gromit who have opened a new bakery -- Top Bun -- and business is booming, not least because a deadly Cereal Killer is targeting all the bakers in town so competition is drying up. Gromit is worried that they may be the next victims but Wallace couldn't care -- he's fallen head over heels in love with Piella Bakewell, former star of the Bake-O-Lite bread commercials. So Gromit is left to run things on his own when he'd much rather be getting better acquainted with Piella's lovely pet poodle Fluffles.

Rumor is that a US showing will soon follow.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Price Controversy Explained

11/19/2008, 13:20 |

There?s been some controversy regarding the unbelievably low price of Nokia?s first full touchscreen phone, the Nokia 5800 XPressMusic. We reported a while back that it?s debuting in Russia and Spain with a significantly higher price tag than what was previously announced, but it turns out that this price includes some added perks.

Original reports pegged the 5800 XpressMusic phone for ?429 or roughly $550 in Spain. However, we?ve now learned that this price includes a 100 Euro voucher for music downloads and a 3 month subscription to Nokia Maps Voice Navigation service. It?s still a ?279 phone, but in fairness, that price does include some additional services and goodies. It?s a nice bundle although I would have preferred to have been given the option of just getting the phone as opposed to strictly limiting my purchase powers to the bundled package.

Dramatic volcanism forged Mercury's surface

07/04/2008, 07:59 |
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Volcanic activity has played a central role in forging the surface of Mercury, scientists said on Thursday based on data collected by a NASA spacecraft that zoomed past the closest planet to the sun in January.
