MacBook Pro users getting bitten by HDCP

11/19/2008, 23:07 |

Yesterday, our buddy David Chartier at Ars and Sam Oliver at AppleInsider both publicized an issue that's been burning up the support boards for a while now: iTunes video rentals and purchases in HD are flagged for HDCP control, and in cooperation with the new Mini DisplayPort connector on the MacBook and MacBook Pro unibody models, those movies and TV shows are refusing to play back on non-compliant external displays.

In this case, 'compliant' means HDMI or recent-vintage DVI, but even monitors or TVs that support HDCP may not properly negotiate with the DisplayPort connector to give iTunes and QuickTime the all-clear signal (if so, quitting and relaunching iTunes once the display is hooked up may clear the playback hold). Equally annoying: HDCP is only supposed to apply to 'high-value' digital streams, meaning standard-def purchases and rentals on the iTunes store should be out of scope... but some reports indicate that both the HD and SD instances are flagged, blocking playback on anything but the laptop's internal display or a straight-thru HDMI connection. Argh!

While Apple TV users with unconventional output setups have been dealing with this aggravation since the beginning of the year, MacBook and MBP owners have largely steered clear, even as the HD content on iTunes became available for playback on the laptops. Now that the hardware and software have come into sync on the unibody models, Apple's compliance with HDCP -- a necessary but appalling condition of the content companies that deliver the HD movies and TV shows -- is beginning to close out the 'analog hole' and cause real aggravation for laptop owners with legitimate use cases. Talk about a bag of hurt.

WinMo-powered iCEphone comes to life, looks scary

11/18/2008, 16:28 |

Edinburgh's own The Medical Phone is just about set to unleash the mobile for the true argonaut in the iCEphone. The Windows Mobile-powered "Swiss Army knife of mobiles" is dubbed a micro-notebook by its manufacturer, and while we're hesitant to go along with that, we can't deny the utility here. Sporting a Jacob's Ladder-style hinge and a full QWERTY keyboard, the unit features three independent panels, a 3-inch 400 x 240 resolution touchscreen, a mouse / tracker pad, dual SIM card slots, HSDPA support, quad-band GSM connectivity, GPS, a 3.1-megapixel camera, WiFi and a 532MHz Freescale iMX31 CPU. We're told that the phone is just weeks / months away from a release in Thailand, and it should be hitting the UK sometime in the March - April time frame for around $1,000. Bonus video coverage after the break.

TVersity 1.0 RC1

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
TVersity 1.0 RC1 - Image 1The team behind the TVersity Media server is announcing the release of the app's version 1.0 (RC1). This isn't a final release, but rather a release candidate. A proper version 1.0 build will be out once the developers manage to iron out all the bugs with RC1.

This new release focuses on interface and usability. It also includes new features such as a configuration wizard as well as tons of bug fixes. While the devs haven't released a proper changelog yet, they noted that this build carries the following updates since its previous release:
  • A new configuration wizard to help ease up TVersity's initial configuration (firewall setup, service auto-start setup, Vista setup issues, and more)
  • Our transcoding engine can now for the first time download FLV and MP4 videos, convert them and stream them to devices all at the same time
  • We are also including in this release a web surfing toolbar from our partner Ask.com.
  • This release also features support for Blackberry devices (media streaming requires OS 4.3 or higher, downloading requires OS 4.2 or higher)
The developers welcome any feedback you may have of this release. The more info they receive, the quicker they can update to full v1.0. Enjoy the download, and be sure to read the instructions for installing this media server to your PC, Xbox 360, Wii, or PlayStation 3 on the TVersity site.

It exists! Chinese Democracy launching on MySpace Music

11/20/2008, 04:10 |

In 1991, the original George Bush was midway through his term, music came on cassette or CD, and Guns 'N Roses released their last album of original material. That will change at midnight Thursday as Chinese Democracy, 17 years in the making, is streamed for free on MySpace Music.

Microsoft to offer free virus protection

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

Section: Computers, Software / Applications

Microsoft's old logoYou’d think that with all the viruses, malware, spyware and what not on Windows, Microsoft would offer some sort of protection.  Well, actually it does, currently the service costs $49.95 per year and is called Microsoft Live OneCare.  It’s one of the many things Microsoft has that’s easy to forget about.  That’s not a bad thing, though, as it will be leaving on June 30, 2009.

To replace OneCare, Microsoft is working on “Morro.“  Morro is the project-name for its new, free virus protection program.  According to the Reuters article, Morro is being designed to work on “smaller, less powerful computers.“  That probably means it is being made to work with netbooks.

There’s no word on what Windows platforms will be supported by Morro, though given that it will be released “the second half of next year,“ it seems natural to include Windows 7, though it will most likely work on XP and Vista as well.  At least that’s what I would assume.

Rueters claims this is a direct shot at McAfee, which it could be.  Although, I don’t know anyone who actually pays for virus protection anymore.  Most everyone I know has Avast, or maybe AVG.  This might be more of a shot at those programs more than McAfee.  It seems a bit ridiculous to have to pay every year for a new version of virus protection for a computer, though it is needed.  This gives Microsoft more of a chance to either control more aspects of computers, or manage to screw them up somehow (which is unlikely).  It is more competition for free personal virus protection, and that can only lead to good things for the average user in the long run.

Adobe Flash Coming to Windows Mobile

11/19/2008, 01:59 |
http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2008/11...-on-the-iphone/

"Adobe’s Flash Player is on 98 percent of all desktop computers, but it is still struggling to make the jump to mobile phones. If you want Flash on a mobile device, right now you have to settle for a compromised version: Flash Lite. But Adobe is committed to bring the full Flash Player experience to mobile phones, as evidenced by its Open Screen Project. On Monday, at its Adobe MAX developer conference, it will demonstrate Flash Player 10 running on a Windows Mobile phone. (However, Flash won’t actually ship on Windows Mobile until late next year)."

Adobe MAX has come and gone and during that time Adobe has announced that would release Flash technology to the Windows Mobile platform and even demonstrated versions of Flash running on Windows Mobile and Google Android. It is really interesting to see Flash running on Google's Android platform as these handsets are virtually brand spanking new. It is amazing to see how quickly big name companies such as Adobe are jumping on consumer smartphone bandwagon since the release of the Apple iPhone and Google Android platforms. Sometimes I wish Microsoft could inspire that kind of innovation and excitement in the mobile industry. It is an incredibly exciting time to be a smartphone user, no matter which device or operating system is in your pocket. However I am still annoyed that it has taking this long for Adobe to get around to bringing Flash to our handsets.

at home in Barcelona

02/04/2008, 19:38 |

I wanted to mention that I am feeling at home in the whole territory of EU and I don’t feel “foreigner” anywhere inside of EU - whether it is Finland or Spain. So next week in Barcelona I will feel at home very much so.

In practice it means that I could move and live permanently in any place inside of EU, but I lived already in Italy - similarly warm country as Spain - so Spain is too warm for me, and thus not an option for me.

But who knows, I never say never. Which reminds me: I must plan/book my visit in Ireland next month…

The Google Mobile Brain Chuckles at Apple

06/10/2008, 05:35 |

Google Brain

The big brain over in the google mobile garage is chuckling right now as Apple amuses the crowd…

gps, 3G, 3rd party apps - voip, ebay, sling, etc… yadda yadda… my phone could do all that 2 years ago”, mutters the brain. “But yes, the iPhone is much prettier and shiny and I thank you from the bottom of my heart”, the brain goes on…

“Apple you are creating my market for me. That is really nice of you. Oh, and an extra special thank you for reducing the price, that just validates and solidifes my thinking (but I’ll keep that to myself). Thanks again and keep up the good work.” she continues.

-the google big mobile brain

PS oh, and the brains over at RIM and MSFT are chuckling… or maybe they are shaking - not sure on that just yet ;)

Readers: Blackberry Storm or Google G1?

11/19/2008, 23:53 |

Over the past mast there have been two cell phones that stand out above the rest, the BlackBerry Storm and the T-Mobile G1 Google Android phone. The G1 has been on the marker for about a month now, and it has not made the impression that all the hype promised.

The BlackBerry Strom has been out for almost a week in the UK, and is due for release on Friday, in the U.S. There is a worry that the phone will not do well on this date, as it is Thanksgiving. It seems to me that Verizon have not thought the release dates through.

Both phones have a touch screen, but the G1 also comes with a QUERTY keyboard. Looking at both phones the BlackBerry Storm has the edge in style and design. Both handsets have their good and bad points, but I think that the Storm is going to do much better than the G1, but remember; this is the first Google phone and better is yet to come.

IE Mobile 6 Will Not Be Available For Existing WinMo Smartphones

11/13/2008, 21:50 |

The Windows Mobile team has confirmed that the upcoming IE Mobile 6 browser or "IE 6 on 6" will not be made available as a separate download for current WinMo 6.1 smartphones. Instead, the update will only show up on devices released starting at the end of this year or in early 2009. The reason, according to Microsoft, is that "the rich media experiences that IE Mobile 6 enables require more powerful, advanced devices." IE doesn't have a whole lot of fans, but if you already have a WinMo smartphone it would suck to miss out on what appears to be a huuuge improvement. [Mobile Burn]

Etymotic Research ety8 In-The-Ear Bluetooth Earphones

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

I'm on the bus. There's a horrible, fingernails-on-chalkboard screech every time the vehicle comes to a stop. A big guy next to me is hacking up buckets of phlegm. A teenage girl behind me is whining into the pink RAZR plastered to her face. But it's OK. In a few seconds, it will all disappear. I plug the Bluetooth adapter into my iPod, switch on the square wireless earphones, and pop the buds in my auditory canals. Ah, the sweet sounds of solitude -- just me and my personal playlist. When I get up to leave, I usually stumble as the bus lurches, but with this setup, there's no catching a thumb on a wire, no earbuds flying into a stranger's lap. The buds stay put, and I'm on my way. Sure, they look silly, but my long hair hides them well. Anyway, looking a bit goofy is worth a blissful morning commute. -- Aria Pearson

Writer?s Block

11/17/2008, 02:38 |

Of the things that happen to me is a mental writers block and the thing to loose is one’s own creativity to procreate designs and errgh what am I thinking and blabbing about. Blogging is a little sort of organismic passion where one writes down in the diary of life, recording it as it goes along..and in the case of CHEDET, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia Tun Dr Mahathir Muhammad …book his blog posts.

I mean how easy it is to pen almost 24 paragraphs of sentences and long one might one add to a post. Ouch. That even is something I can NEVER achieve. Think positive. Trouble with me is that people don’t like me to talk much of my life as a plankton without a theme to it, and so I have to be creative and break down things in the sense of substitute and breaking them down into different categories. IT and one, and life and others.

Itchy me finally got off my bum and restarted my initial project which I scuttled almost 10 years ago with my CHAT.NU domain and installed a multi-user blog. Community blog like what I should have done with my BBS.NU but the term BBS is no longer relevant to the new world, unless it’s the BBC. Likewise, the numerous number of themes and plugins I have to endure modifying to make sure it works is another uphill talk. Like 87 themes big. Yikes. No wonder Blogmas gave up and sold his systems.

In the downtown economy, saving up for a rainy day is something we should do. However if everyone shutdown and stay at home…don’t eat out..what will happen to the economy? Chain restaurants will close down and retrenchments will happen and in effect it will effect the community of workers who depend on the minimum wage pay and in turn the landlord, their restaurant suppliers and their workers and it’s like a domino effect. Take out one and the ecology of life is disrupted abruptly.

Airlines, in my opinion is a rip off, mean kind of people where when prices of fuel goes up they hastily raise prices and impose fuel surcharges and when it’s down to the levels prior to China’s Wake Up Call… they refuse to do so as it will kill them more. Heck, don’t they understand and learn something from the Chinese? Sell it cheap and Fast. Volume counts. No use of flying on empty when your surcharges costs more than the air ticket alone.

Take for example a trip from Kuala Lumpur to New York City, be it JFK or La Gaudia airport or New Jersey slump of an airport ( can’t remember the name..but it’s what the TV says…a cess pool). You know that it normally cost about RM2700 return but the YQ surcharge, aka fuel surcharge is more than RM4000 alone for that round trip. On the other hand, budget airlines will sure want a piece of the pie to the United States of America despite the DHS imposing so many rules along side with the TSA with their ever so stupid laws and hazards to their own health by making people take off their shoes and well, they really should try with a bunch of Singaporeans who just got off their reservist training in Taiwan, field camp what not, unshowered for days…and with their boots and socks…..and when you ask them to open their boots for X-RAY, heck even a thousand banglas and indians in Serangoon Road will be beaten down , face down with the stench of a company of soldiers.

Of course they have to drop by the ever so cruel checkpoint of either San Francisco or San Jose (that’s San HOSE-EH for you stupid Singaporeans..) or in Los Angeles where you wait patiently in line for about a few hours just to get checked out. Talk about super efficiency of the Homeland Security where Kepo-Kek of Singapore wants to be like so, ‘on the ball’ but forgetting that the ever so lazy Singaporean will always have the SAF (Serve and Fly off) mentality where shortcuts are norm and well, their brains washed to the tune of ‘Do whatever you want but don’t get caught’ or cover it up.

Thank the British for that mentality actually as they are so slacked and relaxed and cock ups are a standard norm of life in their cuppa tea, thus always signing on at the job center, and occasionally signed on enough money to go on a holiday to Miami with Virgin Atlantic cheapo flights. Yes. Virgin is getting rid of their surcharges but then…I can’t get to the UK silly. Never mind, at least their ESTA system allows me to enter for the next 10 years without any let or hindrance. I don’t need to work in the US despite the ads and calls by Cheap Hotels asking me to go check ever hotel out…on them.

It’s fun to travel out. Just hope I save enough to bring the entire load up in the US. Call this a mental Writers Block but what I wrote was spontaneous without any sponsorship from Starbucks or Genting Highlands whatsoever. Just lest I need to see if I can actually write as long or heck longer than the missus and well, The New Republic gave me a new lease of life to inspire me of talk rot journalism.

What I do need is an overhaul of my engine mind block.Anyway, if you are going to the US or somewhere, do use those online services like Cheaper Than Hotels.com or similar but like I used a few of them, these online sites does offer cheap rates, even better than corporate or even membership ones at last minute whilst the hotels want to fill their vacancy cheap. Thomas cook or whatever you call it, it’s similar to those agencies at Bus / Coach / Train stations dishing out last minute rates for Bed and Breakfast but this on offer far better..and in style. Well, I am a stingy person….what U expect?
