FITC unconference mobile sessions at Adobe MAX 2008

11/14/2008, 21:52 |

fitc_max.jpg

Looks like there are a couple of mobile “unconference” sessions sponsored by FITC concurrent to Adobe MAX 2008 San Francisco.

Nov 16th 2:30 pm (Mon):
Flash Developers Guide to building iPhone Applications

Nov 18th 12:00 pm (Wed):
Flash Lite’s future in an iPhone Dominated Landscape with Tony McDonald

Unfortunately, I’m fairly sure if I can make it to either, due to session conflicts … a bummer, since I would have a few things to say on both fronts.

Also, check out, some other, really cool “unconference” sessions:

These “unconference” sessions are a great idea. There’s Grant, Mario, Phillip, and some other great speakers in there.

Economic Downturn Impacting Podcasting

11/02/2008, 22:55 |
It appears that the building economic troubles are starting to impact the business and content side of podcasting. The most recent sign of this is the cutbacks to we have seen this past week by Revision3. Revision3 has been a great example of a successful independent new media content producer that has rivaled the success of major media podcasters. I have also started to see cracks in some of the success of major media podcasters as well. Many of these major media podcasters are in it for the long-term, but many are still still struggling to build solid revenue around their podcasting content. Many are bullish on the future of downloadable distribution, but are having a hard time selling the platform to advertisers for two primary reasons;

1) No actual playback data from the existing major podcast distribution platforms at Apple, Creative and Microsoft Zune.

2) Content redistribution concerns.

The major media companies are also becoming more concerned about the costs of making and distributing longer form video podcasts as the costs for bandwidth and staff labor are the major concerns. They all like podcasts because it enables the networks to reach their audience when it is easier for them, especially with cable tv shows that air during the day or work time hours.

I do think that comedy shows that air late in the evening like "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, The Tonight Show, The Late Show with Conan O'Brien Show and all the other late night talk shows should become advertiser supported podcasts so those shows would be seen more.

I am also seeing more serialized scripted dramas and comedies come to video podcasting lately. See series like the Casanovas, We need a Girlfriend and shows from the Independent Comedy Network.

Video podcasting is becoming like TIVO without the DVR and may be a sign of an important shift that is happening to broadcast TV. Video Podcasts are becoming the Future of TV.

Blow-Controlled Phone Camera Can Only Take Pictures of Confused, Concerned People

11/17/2008, 11:54 |

There are some inventions that cause electronics manufacturers and consumers alike to wonder why they hadn't been invented before, and how anyone ever lived without them. And then there's this. Fantalog Interactive has devised a camera phone that takes pictures when you blow on it. Apparently following some kind of hilarious global realization that phones can be controlled with stale air, the Fantalog 'Emotion' blow-camera is not only inspiring because it's the first of its kind, but because its invention has come to pass despite providing no conceivable benefit to anyone at all. Playing At Being An Adult

11/06/2008, 09:05 |

Writing out a check earlier this week, I had the strange feeling of just playing like I was an adult. Sort of like when I was a kid, when playing Monopoly or Life or some other game that gave you funny money. Look at me! I'm all growed up.

Perhaps it was the ceremony that goes into writing a check. Writing out the words for the dollars, doing the cents as figures over 100. Writing out the figure amount. The dating and, of course, the signature.

Who taught me all this? I suppose in high school some of it might have been explained. But really, I think it comes from having watched parents or others who had checkbooks before I did - seeing what they did and mimicking the same.

Hence the playing at adult. There was no adult school I went to, to teach me to buy groceries, buy a car, buy a home, to have a family. No manual to adult life. Suddenly, I was away from home at college, on my own, with the trappings of adulthood. The responsibilities of being an adult. But no real experience of being an adult, nor a guide to what that is supposed to be. Was I doing it right? Would I be discovered as not really adult, by all the other real adults around me?

Sometimes I'm confident in my adulthood. I can feel I am all grown up, know where things are going, how they should be. But then I can look back and think wow, how young I was and how little I really knew.

I've seen people who seem unquestionably adult like. They exude a sense of authority, or certainty or, I don't know - adultness. Grown up, no question - and I can feel like I still don't quite belong.

I confess. I still pretend my car is a spaceship, with invisible thrusters I can control as I fly through space. Maybe I'll never be fully adult, whatever that is.

We gonna move it!

11/13/2008, 15:48 |

Of those things I look for is actually the school holidays where block buster movies will be up for my viewing galore and me try to lavish my taste buds for cartoons. What you expect, I’m a Peter Pan. Men are just big boys with their toys. Never grew up.

Of which, this caught my eye: Madagascar, where Chris Rock and Sasha Bohen (Ali G) starred in them with a load full of character. But then, one thing though stuck to my mind, my little girl, Athira , is more colorful and ever damaged the DVD player just for her MADAGASCAR Movie. It’s time to MOVE IT.

Oh ya..tell that to my sister and mom and dad which she really took a piss at em Nan and Gramps mainly because she will dance like she’s on a tranz and sing to the We Gonna Move It Move It, jingle. Or mostly because she hogs the telly away from her Gramp which is a couch potato cum couch warcraft and command and conquer couch.

Well, I am missing her annoying the heck of me..with her silly antics and hopefully her mom will let her have a stint at the cinema so she can have a memorable time for her forth birthday.

Happy birthday darling. Oh ya..you did try to squeeze yourself out on the 19th, but decided otherwise. Typical child of mine.

Love you both

Petrol Prices to GO UP!!

10/20/2008, 06:01 |

A daily feed from the Telegraph took me into a dilemma whether to post this news or not, mainly due to the OPEC Oil Cartels reducing the oil output by at least 1 million barrels a day, which works to about 2% of their output. What it means to the economy is that petrol , a by-product of Crude Oil will go up, from the roller coaster price of USD147 last year to USD69.50 this week. What they want is to raise the prices to USD90 and above so they can sustain more income, but costing more dent into the world economy.

Quoted from a reliable Financial Analyst, the world will suffer a far worse fate than of the 1930 great depression.Said to be that the economy will only start to recover in 2011 and thus…these three years will be absolutely painful. I just wonder, since Najib and Pak Lah said we are not in recession, does that mean when they declare it after the UMNO elections, that we only will recover in 2013 when everyone else is already having happy hour?

In retrospective approach, Cartel action will drive up our petrol prices by at least 30 sen and this will be in a matter of days or even hours when they start to cut the pipes. Iranian and Venezuelan governments stopped their taps dry this morning to protest of the cheap prices.

I’m sticking to my guns and cut my costs!

Making the web work as a reach medium

11/18/2008, 19:57 |

T-Mobile bought a one billion impression campaign from AOL/Platform-A last week. The impressions were spread across two days. With Platform-A delivering about 3 billion impressions per day, that's a 33 percent share of voice across their network (the biggest one out there.) I would say that officially, this ad buy proves that you can have simultaneous reach of some kind online.
No it's not the same as a superbowl commercial, but it's pretty important for brand advertisers nonetheless.
More marketers should be willing to pay a premium for this kind of campaign. A site takeover actually already has some traction and is a great way to flood people with your message. However one site is only one site. A giant scale buy on a network on the other hand, can ensure that you're showing a majority of Americans your message in just a day or two. Networks should be selling takeovers every day of the year.

There are a few tactical issues to think about:

The hard part about share of voice using a network is that on each site, the share of voice would actually be somewhat small. Using retargeting can make sure you hit the same person a few times.

There can be several reasons for wanting broad reach. Obviously one of them is to have a lot of people see your ad. But the other goal is typically to have those people remember your ad. Pair this kind of buy with guarantees on some major home pages and you should be good to go.

Networks sell this kind of thing for low single-digit CPMs, a great price in a downturn.

Slow and tiresome network backups in process?..

11/14/2008, 19:58 |

Yes people, it’s the time of the year where I’m synchronising my data sets over to the clusters of cluttered servers in the US just in case I loose my data. Did you know that stingy TELEKOM MALAYSIA is offering RM4 for a 2GB storage with such and such setup fee where one get it for nearly for free on the web. And talk about trying to upload 2 GB of data, takes days my dear as TM Backbone can’t even support that kind of infrastructure.

However, Me being Me..is a real jerk and well, I used my kakis in the hosting industry to let me upload that kind of back end data to their datacenter and in turn upload to my clusters. Somewhat redundant and well, since we already paid for the fiber optics to the TM Backend which is quite a lot. Really alot. Something like RM4000 a month per MB lot, when you take out a 155MB backend.

Still, TM being TM, it’s frigging 5 days already and my 148GB of uploads is not even 40% up yet….so guess who is the bigger idiot? Me or those sales rep from TM? No wonder their shares are now at an all time low of just over RM4 from a peak of RM13 before the elections, and now they are so skint of not paying the dividends. Yucks! Time to ditch em? Nope. Time to buy them out as they are..after all Terpaksa Menyeksa ..if you get my drift like telling Britain they can’t use BT!

Why Music Can’t Just Be Free: continuing on the debate

My ‘Why Music Can’t Just Be Free’ post has stirred up a hornets nest of debate and comment. As Juupiter’s weblogs don’t enable comments I’ve decided to continue the debate on my other weblog MusicIndustryBlog. My opinions are just that, and Jupiter has always believed that good opinions are shaped through debate. So if you want to join the debate join me over there. For those of you that have sent emails or direct messages via Twitter I will reply to you just as soon as I find time.

Note: my colleague Ian Fogg points out that I inferred in my previous post that SourceForge are a developer when they in fact a developer platform.

Saludos…

Domenico Falzano

Samsung Epix SGH-i907 gets reviewed: it's a mixed bag

10/28/2008, 14:46 |

The Samsung Epix, as it's known on AT&T, recently joined the herd of others cluttering up the carrier's shelves after being known elsewhere for the longest time as the SGH-i907. For those teetering on a purchase, the cats at Pocketnow have some valuable insight you should probably chew on first. For starters, they found the screen to be stout and the optical joystick to be "fantastic," though the dearth of in-box amenities was a bit of a letdown. On a very positive note, the reviewer never once had to initiate a soft reboot, and the ginormous 1800mAh battery got him through a solid 1.5 days of heavy usage before calling it quits. Unfortunately, the lackluster software suite was the Achilles' heel; critics found that Samsung's Windows Mobile overlays and additions were ho hum at best, and the complete omission of a soft reset hole was just unacceptable. The bottom line? You should probably give this one a handle in-store before buying blind -- as lovely as some aspects are, you don't want to buy into a device that's frustrating to use.

GoBidet makes butt-washing simple

08/01/2008, 18:00 |

Joel at BBG discovered this delightfully simple bidet system, called the GoBidet. You simply move the handle into place when needed and shoot a little water up there. Dead simple.

I’ve been waiting for GoBidet (HA!) ever since my aborted attempt at installing my own butt-washing toilet, the SpaLoo in my own home. I think this is the year when I’ll finally be able to wash my nethers sans hands.
