Chip Manufacturer Quantace Raises $12 Million In Second Round

Semiconductor manufacturer Quantance has raised $12 million in a second round of funding. The San Mateo, Calif.-based company develops technology that it says can improve the data speed and battery life of mobile devices using third- and fourth-generation cellular technology. It plans to use this latest cash infusion to make its patented technology commercially available for 3G devices, which is where the company is focusing its business interests. The latest round of funding was led by new investors TD Fund and DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM) Capital contributed as well. Original investors Granite Ventures and InterWest Partners also participated in the round. The company expects to begin shipping its first commercial chipset in the second quarter of 2009. Release.

T-Mobile Pushes New Digital Photo Service

T-Mobile is getting deeper into the photo business. The carrier is offering a new service that lets customers email pictures straight from a cellphone to a digital photo frame?but it'll cost them. The frame, which holds a SIM card, sells for $100 at T-Mobile stores. On top of that, customers pay a $10 monthly service fee that lets them email an unlimited number of pictures from their cellphones to the frame. The frame, called Cameo, is apparently the first device of its kind in the U.S. that has a cellular connection. Separately, in an effort to lure holiday shoppers, T-Mobile today began offering free companion airline flight tickets to new and existing customers who sign-up for a two-year contract between Nov. 19 and Dec. 24.

One of those days where it’s a sick day for me watching Eureka seasons one and two and my NCIS..all because it’s a sick day for me. Well, now I have over a few sites to rework, and well, Richie asked a question to me just earlier on of how to get a stable connection over at Shah Alam as many are cussing and swearing of even having a decent phone line connection, be it streamyx, or Celcom or any other cellular communications as it’s a black out area thanks to the military base nearby, and the lack of permissions or planning rights by Sime Darby for transmitter. This is a little break from me modifying my CHAT.NU Community Blog (it’s a multi site blog) and sort out those bugs in the system.I appreciate the break from my brain picking.

This is the actual transponder used by mobile companies for their Basic 2.5G systems and maybe the basic 3G (not UMTS 2100/WCDMA) which actually looks like someone connected the aircon piping over, and if you open it up…well …

It is basically a small little 2 inch thingy…which I dared not pry open the insides as I fear for the radiation that is still may be left in there. Notoriously, for your information, transponders and smoke detectors carries Curie (discovered by Marie Curie whom died of radiation sickness) which is an active radiation element. Unlike Plutonium or Uranium, it’s not that likely to kill unless it’s electrically charged up. These photos are CLASSIFIED in some places and if you ever touch those conducting cables in underground or above ground car parks like Queensbay Mall Penang or KLCC, you will get a quick headache within 20 seconds and 10 minutes to death as the amount of radiation , though may be only 50Watts is the equivalent of having your head inside a microwave oven set at 5000W! Ref point, 50W can transmit the same as over 7000 mobile phones.

Which is a a sad thing to see…death of kids and the more heart breaking… of the images of their grave yard. I was trying hard to focus on the windmill but kept on getting the blurr images all round. Spooky…maybe..just it is a grim reminder that some parents have to face, to bury their kids, way before their time.

Some take life for granted..and try to get rid of their own children, through abortion or what means, whilst some..actually love and wanted to have their own. It was thing I can’t get it out of my head. Someone’s Prince and Some mommy’s princess. In the end, in the age of technology, only memories goes by. I lost 3 brothers….and through unmarked graves. I lost mine too. And in turn, we carry on living like a living dead…waiting for us at the other side.Little Angels waiting for their parents to bring them forward. It’s a thing. I seriously can’t get a clear decent shot. All images, how mounted my tripod were….well, it’s something to remember.

In remembrance of those who left before us, Al-Fateha.God Bless their souls.

Conventions and Expos

Last week have been a near hell week for me, as I had to run about between my operations offices, factories and clients in preparation of the Single District Single Industry (Satu Daerah Satu Industry) where everyone from the whole Malaysia gather about in Ayer Keroh Melaka and display and show off their products and goods at the MITC Expo Hall.

First off, the organiser done a good job but less to be said of their contractors and staff alike. Power lines and connections are not up, NO WiFi for us in the whole hall, and poor Wireless Cellular Broadband connectivity be it Celcom or Maxis alike. Signage were wrong, with the stickers up at the wrong booths.

And that we could only move in using the back loading bay doors about after dark. Ouch! Wiring was still messy. Never mind.

But then, the convention had under estimated the number of participants in the hall. Catered for just over 300 people, regional district offices booked just for about 400 odd people and the MITC Ancasa Hotel could only cater for less than half of that. Some are placed all over, like the Kings hotel and making thinsg even worse was the weekend, with Singaporeans flocking Malacca during the school holiday.

So, what happens next is a standard norm. 4 or even 7 people cramped and camped into a single double bed hotel room. No extra mattress or pillows, many had to make do with the carpeted floors. ME? I was ready. Darn right ready for this as it’s a standard for Malaysian expos, as it’s how the arrangements were during MIHAS or even others.

What is the after effect? Well, think of it as when I got too pissed off and woke up in the Guard Room or the Police Lock up cells. Hard flooring and full of mites. YES! Mites and Cockroaches flock the place.

Silly, and thus I got a nasty ache in my ear and a nasty bite on the ear lobes. Must be a mite I thought and so the antiseptic don’t seem to work. One reason is….dust mites don’t bite… Cockroaches does.

So, remind me to find my own accommodation ahead of time. And avoid any expos outside my own working area. At least I could sleep in the factory storeroom or something like that.

Telcos do this all the time but by George, what a whopping drop for the iPhone! The 8GB iPhone is currently experiencing a huge price cut to $99.00 from Orange just in time for the holidays. This is way below the suggested retail price of the phone leaving a lot of subsidizing going for Orange. Moves like this usually cater to the initial appetite for gadget lust without consumers realizing how “trapped” they are in their post paid cellular plans for the next so and so months.

AT&T today launched the HTC Fuze, a Windows Mobile smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard and TouchFLO 3D touch screen user interface.

Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the Fuze is a compact, powerful smartphone with a smooth gloss black finish and unique faceted backplate. It features a sharp, 262K-color 2.8-inch (480 x 640 px) VGA touch screen. A full QWERTY keyboard slides out from the side.

TouchFLO 3D is designed for one-hand operation using gesture-based navigation. Customers simply touch, hold and slide along the screen tabs. A quick slide on the home screen activates the most used features such as email, text messaging, music player and camera. The "zoom in, zoom out" feature accesses the Internet via Opera browser for desktop-like webpage rendering.

AT&T customers can choose from popular platforms to access their corporate email. Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional offers integration with Microsoft Outlook information such as email, contacts, calendar and to-do lists.

Users can access and edit email attachments using mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint.

A unique business card application lets users capture and save contact information with the built-in 3.2-megapixel camera.

Users can access AT&T Mobile Music, an integrated, on-the-go music service. Customers can browse music with accessible tabs sorted by playing lists, artists, albums, songs and genre views.

CV (Cellular Video) accesses thousands of video clips - news, sports, weather, entertainment, premium HBO Mobile content and more - via streaming video.

"The HTC Fuze, with its array of connectivity features, provides our customers with the ability to choose the manner in which they communicate using the form factor they deem most appropriate at a given moment - all in a very attractive and sleek package," said Michael Woodward, Vice President, Smart Devices for AT&T's wireless unit. "It's a fantastic addition to AT&T's industry-leading Windows Mobile smartphone portfolio."

While many industries are going through a bit of a rough patch (to put things mildly), both AT&T and Verizon are soaking up the sun. Either way, AT&T reported a 2.0 million net gain in total wireless subscribers on the coattails of 2.4 million iPhone 3G activations, while it notched a 50.5% uptick in wireless data revenues and saw overall wireless revenues increase by 15.4%. As for Verizon Wireless, it witnessed 1.5 million net customer additions (excluding the 630,000 customers pulled in from its Rural Cellular acquisition), and it noted that data revenues -- which now comprise over a fourth of all service revenue -- shot up 42.5% to $2.8 billion.
