Petrol Prices to GO UP!!

10/20/2008, 06:01 |

A daily feed from the Telegraph took me into a dilemma whether to post this news or not, mainly due to the OPEC Oil Cartels reducing the oil output by at least 1 million barrels a day, which works to about 2% of their output. What it means to the economy is that petrol , a by-product of Crude Oil will go up, from the roller coaster price of USD147 last year to USD69.50 this week. What they want is to raise the prices to USD90 and above so they can sustain more income, but costing more dent into the world economy.

Quoted from a reliable Financial Analyst, the world will suffer a far worse fate than of the 1930 great depression.Said to be that the economy will only start to recover in 2011 and thus…these three years will be absolutely painful. I just wonder, since Najib and Pak Lah said we are not in recession, does that mean when they declare it after the UMNO elections, that we only will recover in 2013 when everyone else is already having happy hour?

In retrospective approach, Cartel action will drive up our petrol prices by at least 30 sen and this will be in a matter of days or even hours when they start to cut the pipes. Iranian and Venezuelan governments stopped their taps dry this morning to protest of the cheap prices.

I’m sticking to my guns and cut my costs!

Canadian Call Center Woes

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Here's an article from the Edmonton Journal about the closure of a Toronto Dominion Bank call center in the city, for a net loss of about 140 jobs.

Though this is a Canadian company shutting down a Canadian call center, there have been other Canadian call center closures that can be laid at the foot of the weak U.S. dollar.

Outsourcing to Canada (an important destination in the so-called "near-shore" outsourcing model) is no longer saving U.S. companies money due to the unfavorable exchange rates for the U.S. dollar.

A recent Datamonitor report covered on TMCnet by associate editor Patrick Barnard revealed that companies are truly starting to pack up Canadian operations. The most notable U.S. outsourcer to do so thus far is Cincinnati-based Convergys Corporation.

The Datamonitor report also cites a waning of interest in Canada in relation to the increasing interest in having Spanish-speaking agents on staff for the growing consumer base of American Hispanics. (Canada does not offer a labor force with a high percentage of Spanish-speakers.)

Q&A with Ben Mattes - Prince of Persia engine, characters, and graphics

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
By adapting and improving the engine used for Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360, PS3), Ubisoft producer Ben Mattes talks about the "seamless fluidity" that gamers can expect from the latest Prince of Persia (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, DS). As a result, graphics are rich and smooth, and our hero can move better than Altair.

"The new Prince will display 13 times more polygons than the previous Prince, and even more than Altair in Assassin s Creed," Mattes said. "Every detail of the faces, clothes and accessories of the characters will feel next-gen thanks to hi-res textures, specific lighting systems and shaders." Ubisoft went all out on using skin morph, wrinkle map, indirect lighting, and occlusion to provide depth to each character.

Prince of Persia - Image 1

Having more power in platforms now than before and new systems to take advantage of, the new Prince of Persia will have crisp detailed graphics that its predecessors and even competitors do not. "The
richness and the high quality of the Persian environments have always been a key element of Prince of Persia games," Mattes said.

Thanks to next-gen technology, we are able to create vast outdoors worlds Prince of Persia fans have never dreamed of as most of the game takes place outside in a fantastic mythological Persia. Whereas in previous Prince of Persia games, the player was mostly confined inside palaces or cities.

Possibly the most exciting feature on the new Prince of Persia is the non-linear game experience. It's up to you how and when to progress the storyline, as well as the endings.

Apple Adds HDCP To New Laptops; Piracy Continues, Legit Users Get Annoyed

11/19/2008, 01:02 |
It appears that Apple has begun using HDCP copy protection technology on some content it sells through the iTunes Music Store, and implementing it in its latest laptops. HDCP "protects" content as it travels across different types of connections, and is generally implemented in such a way that an HDCP-compliant source won't play content on a non-HDCP compliant connected display. So HDCP-ified content can't be played on a number of older displays, or ones that don't use one of the compatible types of connections.

You know how this thing goes down: movie studios insist on some new magic method to protect their content from piracy, it gets implemented, does nothing to stop piracy (sometimes even helps pirates), and ends up getting in the way for legitimate customers. In this instance, a guy who'd bought a movie from iTunes tried to play it over a projector connected to his Mac via a VGA connection; instead of being able to enjoy the content he'd legitimately purchased in a reasonable way, he was greeted with an error message. So here's a customer who legitimately purchased some content, and is being stopped from enjoying it in a perfectly reasonable, legitimate and legal way. Once again, it's puzzling to see content and technology companies implement these roadblocks to frustrate their paying customers. What's the incentive for this guy to pay to download a movie, rather than download a pirated version that he can watch on his projector? Apparently, it bears repeating for content and device companies: you don't stop piracy by annoying your paying customers.

Portland Family Gets $20,000 Cell Phone Bill

09/07/2008, 16:31 |

A family in Portland got a whopper of a phone bill from AT&T. All told, they owed nearly $20,000.

The Terry family said they wished they would have received some kind of warning before receiving their 200-page bill in the mail for $19,370.
In July, their son headed north to Vancouver, Canada, and used a laptop with an AirCard to send photos and e-mails back home. The bill showed he used the service 21 times, but because he was out of the country, the activity added up to thousands of dollars in charges.
The AirCard allows users to connect to e-mail, the Internet and business applications while traveling, according to AT&T’s Web site. On the Terry family’s bill, they were charged international fees for the service.

The family says they don’t want to pay the bill because an AT&T rep told them they wouldn’t be charged for the calls.

Fly Clear Airport Security Pass Prices Go Up, But New Ways To Save Offered

11/18/2008, 04:20 |

Clear, the system allowing people to pass through airport security faster at many US airports, is testing a new program to pay hard cash for referrals plus offering a new "gift card" option for those who want to give Clear passes to others. If you have a Clear referral code, you can earn the cash as well as buy gift cards at a cheaper price, $40 off.

Both moves seem to be in response to Clear upping the annual price on October 15 from $128 to $199 per year. That was quite a hike, and even more so when you consider it used to be $99 until sometime earlier this year.

I suspect some people are finding the $199 cost too pricey, so Clear is pushing on the promotions to make up for lost sales. Just pure speculation.

I've added years to the expiration of my Clear card, through Clear's "Refer-A-Friend" referrals, since the program was launched last year. If you're signing up, when you get to part 3 where you pick your membership term, you'll see a box that says:

Refer-A-Friend/Discount/Gift/Corporate Code If you have a code, please enter it here.

Here's my code. Use this, and you'll get a free month. And hey, I'll get a free month, as well!

SCA49148

Today, I got an email telling me this:

We have selected a small group of members who took advantage of Clear's Refer-A-Friend program to test a new promotion that we want to launch. You are one of those lucky members! Between now and December 17, we'll send you a check for $20 for each friend you refer. You know the rules as well as we do; your friend just has to enter your Refer-A-Friend code when he or she enrolls online, and must complete in-person enrollment before we can send you a check for $20 to the address we have listed on your Clear account.

Just as with the regular Refer-A-Friend program, there is no limit on how many people you can refer before December 17 - or, to put it another way, no cap on the amount of money you'll receive from us for all the friends you've referred. We think this is a great way to reward those members who have gone above and beyond the rest in spreading the word about Clear, while making it worthwhile for you to continue helping us grow our membership base nationwide.

It's unclear (no pun intended) whether those in this pilot program get an extra month, a $20 check or both. Hey, I'll hope for both. But the main point is that I suspect the current Refer-A-Friend program may change to a cash bounty basis.

That's kind of a bummer. I like the current "everyone wins" system. But for those generating lots of referrals, eventually getting extra months isn't that useful. What happens when your card will last longer than you live?

Anyway, I recommend that anyone in Clear sign-up for the Refer-A-Friend program. It's easy to do, doesn't cost you anything and now comes with an added benefit -- gift card discounts.

The gift cards let you buy a Clear membership for someone else at the regular $199 price. But if you have a referral code, you get them for $159, according to another email I got today:

You have a Clear card, but do your friends and family? Now that the busy travel season has arrived, membership in Clear has never been more valuable. Until December 15, you have the exclusive option to give Clear for only $159 - $40 less than the current rate of $199. Just enter your code in the "Discount Code" field at checkout to take advantage of this special offer.

This probably makes more sense for some families to use in some cases than the "Family Plan" prices. Those work out like this:

  • 2 family members, $329 ($165 each)
  • 3 family members, $459 ($153 each)
  • 4 family members, $589 ($147 each)
  • 5 family members, $719 ($144 each)

Here's the thing. If one family member already has a membership and later decides to have another family member join, there's no "1 additional family member" price. So the $159 gift card is a good deal. And if you wanted to add two family members, buying two gift card is still cheaper than the 2 family member price, which works out to $165 each. Keep in mind that kids under 12 with you get to use Clear even if they don't have a card -- you don't need memberships for them.

How about purchasing multiple years when you sign up? That works like this:

  • 1 Year: $199
  • 2 Years: $358 ($179 per year)
  • 3 Years: $497 ($165 per year)
  • 5 Years: $695 ($139 per year)
  • 10 Years: $1,190 ($119 per year)

I suspect just doing one year actually works out cheaper for those looking to save money over the short term. Right now, anyone with a current pass can renew for $159 through Dec. 15. That's a little cheaper than buying the two year pass. If you could apply and get processed in time to quickly go in an renew, you'd save $20. Still, processing might take longer than that. But still again, I suspect the renewal discount will be extended or some other member offer will be put out. Just don't hold me to it!

The main issue to me about a 3 year or longer period is that Clear itself isn't guaranteed to exist that long. So far, they seem to be expanding and doing well. They probably will be around for 3-5 years. But in 10 years, who knows how airport security is going to change -- and $1,190 is a lot to gamble on that.

Meanwhile, how's Clear going? For me, pretty well! I do much more domestic travel than in the past, and it usually saves me time -- sometime a considerable amount. San Jose, some terminals at JFK, Oakland -- it's great to have someone pick up your stuff, whisk you right to the front of the line, and zoom -- you're through. When there's no Clear line, I really miss it (JFK Terminal 5, I'm like "Do you have Clear?" and no one knew what I was talking about).

You still have to have both a photo ID and your Clear card, which is stupid. I mean, as I wrote in Passport Fast Track: UK's IRIS Easily Beats US's Clear, with Britain's (Free!) system, all you need are your eyes. No card is required. Still, the system seems to process me much faster than when I wrote my Using CLEAR To Clear Airport Security -- This Is Efficient? post last year. Plop my finger down, in a few seconds, all's good. And new Clear cards (promised in January) that will have your picture on them are still promised to be coming, which you can also use as a photo ID with the TSA. That'll be nice, not having to fiddle with both a driver's license and a Clear card.

Android-like Google Sync now available for BlackBerry phones

11/20/2008, 06:23 |

Thanks to the new Google sync, BlackBerry users will soon be getting a taste of how it feels to live the Android life. While the HTC G1 may lack a desktop sync tool, it does feature automatic syncing with Gmail?s address book and vice-versa, providing you with a safe way of backing up your contacts on the internet. This same feature is now headed BlackBerry?s way and, in true Google fashion, it?s free of charge.

For instructions on how to get the Google Sync update, just head on over to mobile.googl.com/sync and enter your phone number. Once complete, an appropriate link will be sent to your mobile phone. I guess this is Google?s way of spreading the love to the rest of the mobile community even if you?re not yet ready to hop on the Android bandwagon.

Arduino sleep-tracker DIY

08/01/2008, 16:31 |

Anita Lillie at the MIT Media Lab created an Arduino-based sleep tracker to process where she keeps her arms while thrashing in the great deep sea of sleep.

The best part is that she created a graphing system that shows her movements and positions while she slept.

My main problem with waking up in the morning is that feeling of grogginess along with an intense desire to sleep more. However, I’ve noticed that sleeping without an alarm clock, and just waking up whenever I wake up, helps. And I’ve also noticed that sometimes when I wake up I am dramatically more refreshed than usual. Reading about sleep on the web led me to learn more about sleep cycles. One interesting page (”The power of the Sleep Cycle”) claimed that it wasn’t the amount of sleep one gets, but the part of the sleep cycle we wake up in. The author suggested that, because we sleep in cycles about 90 minutes long, we should aim to wake up in the transition between sleep cycles, since the brain is more alert and refreshed at that time.

A noble goal and a great way to look like a cyborg while you sleep.

HTC G1: Android Debuts, First Impressions

11/06/2008, 22:23 |
To begin, it must be noted the author is an iPhone addict, and duly biased. And, this review will pit the G1 vs. the iPhone in many regards. The photo shown here was taken with the iPhone (yes, the crappy iPhone camera).

Getting up and running was simple and fast: add the SIM card, power on, and configure the GMAIL account you want associated with your phone.

First catch: make sure the GMAIL account you are using is the one you REALLY want to use. After you add the account, there is currently no way to change it other than resetting the phone to factory settings. See the manual on how to do this.

After you have the GMAIL set, you are off and running. And playing. There are many features to check out, and the input methods are numerous: touch screen, track ball, full QWERTY keyboard and few tactile buttons to boot.

After some time cruising around the device, some initial thoughts came to mind:
  • If you don't like the idea of being forced to have a GMAIL account, don't get one. Or hack it!
  • Its much bulkier and heavier than I thought it would be; much more than the iPhone.
  • The applications available in the 'Marketplace' are very average, and seem out of date
  • Getting on WiFi is easy, but unlike the iPhone it doesnt pro actively ask you to join one
  • touch screen is fine, appears very responsive
  • adding additional email accounts is straight forward, no harder/easier than iPhone mail application
  • Feels much more like windows mobile than I would have thought.
  • Awkard holding it in landscape position (for your right hand) and using keyboard, not as nice as Sidekick, as the device gets in the way of itself
  • trackball might be overkill for everything but games. but I love it for games, and this is an important part
  • Camera is pretty solid, though not sure on exact method to snap shot (see photo on right)
Overall, good first effort. its apparent that the HW and SW is from different firms as its not totally tight. Its a PC, not a Mac :)

Square Enix lists playables and trailers for August party

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Square Enix's List of games - Image 1More details have come in today regarding Square Enix' upcoming party in August.

While we may already know what games are going to be shown at
DKΣ3713, we previously didn't know which ones would actually be playable. Now, it's time to change that.

Of the various games listed, it seems only the PSP and DS games will be getting demos. Yes folks, that unfortunately means that Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and Final Fantasy Agito XIII will only be getting trailers.

However, it does mean that Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Sigma Harmonics will be getting playable demos at the party.

The full list can be found in the picture that comes with this article, with the projector icon indicating a trailer for the game and the little PSP icon denoting a playable demo. The single game in Japanese characters refers to Sigma Harmonics.

Great line-up eh? Unfortunately, the event is a private affair with only 2,400 guests invited to the party. That means media coverage of the trailers and demos aren't allowed. Bummer. Still, we hope to get some great updates from the event, so stay tuned.

RIAA Gets Tennessee Law To Force Universities To Filter Networks For Copyrighted Content

11/18/2008, 23:44 |
After more than a decade of watching the entertainment industry (mainly the RIAA and the MPAA), one thing I've learned is that the organization never gives up in pushing its legislative agenda. If there's a setback in one area, you can be sure that others from the organization are eagerly pushing the exact same rules through some other angle. The typical MO is that they try to get federal legislation passed in their favor. However, if that fails, they switch to the fallback plans which involve international treaties and state laws. Both of these are great because they tend to get a lot less scrutiny. State laws are a bit of a pain, because you have to get a few of them approved to create the "groundswell" that makes other states jump on board, but changes to state laws can often pass through under the radar.

That appears to be what's happening in the effort to force universities to install filters monitoring their networks for any unauthorized transmissions. You may recall that the RIAA pushed strongly to get Congress to pass laws requiring filters. Basically, the entertainment industry first flat-out lied (yes, lied) about how big a problem file sharing on campus was, and that got some Congressional Reps (with plenty of campaign contributions from the entertainment industry) to introduce legislation punishing universities if they didn't filter their networks. Widespread outcry against that legislation helped water it down, but it appears the industry just moved on to state legislatures.

The RIAA is now celebrating the fact that Tennessee has passed legislation that requires universities to install filters if they've received at least 50 DMCA requests. Considering the massive number of DMCA notices that the RIAA has been known to file, this is hardly a large hurdle. The law will cost Tennessee taxpayers nearly $10 million in the first year, and another $1.5 million each year -- based on the state's own estimates. And for what? To put in filters that won't work, just to try to prop up an obsolete business model from legacy players in an industry that needs to learn how to adapt to the market?

Mobile Startup Spotlight: Tatango

11/12/2008, 18:27 |

Recently I was introduced to an exciting new mobile startup based in Bellingham, Washington called Tatango ( http://tatango.com). I had the opportunity to chat with their CEO and Founder, Derek Johnson, last week to learn more about the company and hear about their future plans.

The company was started just over a year ago under the name NetworkText, and recently re-branded under the name Tatango. (According to a video on their website there is no meaning behind the company name.)

What exactly does Tatango do?

Tatango provides a simple to use service that allows you to send a text or voice message directly from your computer or mobile phone to a group, keeping them connected anytime, anywhere. For example, lets say you had a group of people you wanted to communicate with in a more time sensitive, mobile way than through email. You could certainly grind your way through sending individual text messages or, by signing up to Tatango, you can message everyone with a single effort. Tatango allows any group to collect, manage and mobile message all of their group members both from a computer and mobile phone. And the great thing is that it doesn?t require any special phone and users don?t need to download any software to use the service. As long as you have text messaging, you can use Tatango.

I gave the service a test drive and it is dead simple to use. They have done a great job with the User Interface and even a non-technical Hockey-Mom could figure it out. You set up a group, invite your members and once they join your group, you are able to message them. (This prevents against the dreaded mobile-spam issue.)

It is free to sign up and the basic service is free to use. Tatango makes money by placing 30 character text ads at the bottom of group text messages and 7 second advertisements within voice messages. They also offer a premium version that is $4.95 per month which provides additional features such as the ability to add keywords. Today the service works across all major US wireless carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) and Derek tells me that they will be adding International support early next year as well.

The company is doing great ? they raised an undisclosed amount of funding from The Bellingham Angel Group earlier this year which allowed them to beef up their technology infrastructure, move into some office space, re-design the website and hire a few folks. They now have 6 employees and have had over 5000 groups sign up to use the service. The average group size is 40 and Tatango is now sending about 4 million messages per month across these 5000 groups.

Talking to Derek was very refreshing. He is a young guy (23) and although he admitted some people (guys with $$) have expressed concern about his lack of experience, he is passionate about his company and loves what he is doing. As Derek explained, he didn?t start the company with any grand vision ? he was simply trying to create a more efficient way to communicate with his friends through text messages. Derek and a few buddies spent about 4 months building a prototype and guess what, next thing they knew they had lots of other folks who wanted to use the service as well.

I asked Derek what the next 6 months had in store for him and along with looking for additional capital to stay ahead of the growth, his focus is pretty simple:

1. Get more groups signed up to use the service.
2. Fine-tune his business model so he can get profitable.
3. Continue to add features and functionality to make Tatango even better to use.

Personally I would have loved to use this service lat spring when I was coaching my 6 year old's Tee-Ball team. We had one game during the week and one game every Saturday. If you?re at all familiar with Seattle weather in April and May, you know that it is completely unpredictable. There were at least 4 games when I had to make last minute decisions on whether or not the games were on, and then figure out how I communicate that to 11 other parents. Tatango would have been a perfect solution and I?m sure I?ll find other uses for it as time goes on.

I encourage you to check it out at tatango.com. It will be fun watching these guys grow.

Sony DR-BT160AS Bluetooth Headphones: Buyable Now for $130
