Hack together a nine-cell battery for the MSI Wind

08/01/2008, 17:00 |

mini-CIMG5448

If you?re not yet turned off by MSI?s recent price hikes or you have a three-cell version of the Wind already, a post over in the MSI Wind Forums details how to turn the small-ish three-cell battery into a whopping nine-cell battery.

It looks relatively easy if you?re really determined, although I?d likely not attempt anything that involved slicing the battery open with a box cutter. Finding the extra six cells to add to the standard three cells might be a bit difficult, too, as the forum poster simply says that he was able to ?get a source of the same batteries that are in the Wind? but doesn?t detail how the rest of us could get our hands on those batteries.

If you?re the daring type, though, here?s a brief overview of the process.

First, you open up the front side of the battery using a small flathead screwdriver to pry each end apart. Opening the back side is more tricky and requires slicing a series of tabs off with a box cutter (?they?re obviously not meant to be separated?). Then, the dividers inside the battery casing are all removed to make way for the six extra cells that?ll be added.

mini-CIMG5445

Then, you have to finagle the metal tabs into making contact with the four cells on each of the outside corners of the battery pack. If you can manage to do all that without destroying your battery or hurting yourself, it looks like you?ll be able to squeeze out over seven hours of use.

Much more detailed instructions can be found here.

NFL Sprints to wireless

11/06/2008, 15:50 |

The Wall Street Journal reports today that “Sprint Will Kick Off a Series of Eight Football Phone-Casts”:

For the first time Thursday, a National Football League game — the Cleveland Browns vs. the Denver Broncos — will be broadcast on Sprint mobile phones as part of the wireless company’s exclusive partnership with the league. That partnership deal is valued at about $500 million over five years.

Over the next seven weeks, Sprint will phone-cast the eight games that are televised solely on the NFL Network, the league’s cable channel. For the past three seasons, the NFL has struggled to persuade major cable operators to include its channel in their basic programming packages.

With the NFL Network is available in only about 40% of American households, Sprint executives hope the NFL games can do for their company what the league’s Sunday Ticket package has done for satellite-television provider DirecTV Group. Sunday Ticket, which is exclusive to DirecTV, allows dedicated fans to see every NFL game on Sunday afternoons, and has been crucial to DirectTV’s growth.

FITC unconference mobile sessions at Adobe MAX 2008

Looks like there are a couple of mobile “unconference” sessions sponsored by FITC concurrent to Adobe MAX 2008 San Francisco.

Nov 18th 12:00 pm (Wed):

Unfortunately, I’m fairly sure if I can make it to either, due to session conflicts … a bummer, since I would have a few things to say on both fronts.

Also, check out, some other, really cool “unconference” sessions:

These “unconference” sessions are a great idea. There’s Grant, Mario, Phillip, and some other great speakers in there.

Wal-Mart confirmed to be selling the iPhone 3G December 28th

11/19/2008, 21:29 |

For weeks now there have been rumors of Wal-Mart eventually carrying Apple?s iPhone 3G. Now it has been confirmed that starting December 28th, select Wal-Mart locations as well as a few Sam?s Club stores will be carrying the AT&T exclusive handset.

The iPhone 3G will be on select Wal-Mart store shelves in 2,500 locations. Sam?s Club will only be getting the iPhone 3G in 69 stores in the US. There is still no word on suspected pricing due to the fact that many would wait till after Christmas to pick up the phone at a cheaper price. AT&T is going to be supporting Wal-Mart as far as activations go. Sam?s Club kiosks that are managed by Radio Shack however will not be getting the iPhone 3G. Here is the execution timeline for the launch of the iPhone 3G.

* 12/2 ? 12/5:  AT&T / Wal-Mart MEM Classroom Training for Store Leads
* 12/3 ? 12/19:  AT&T In-Store Training
* 12/26 ? 12/27:  AT&T In-Store Refresher Training
* 12/28: Nationwide Launch
* 12/28 ? 12/30:  Wal-Mart and AT&T War Room Support

LG Prada 2 microsite, Bluetooth watch Launched

11/19/2008, 02:39 |

We?ve seen the official specs of the LG Prada 2 already, but since then, we haven?t had any news about this QWERTY-equipped follow-up to the original Prada phone.

That wait is over. LG has now launched an official microsite, reminding us that such a phone still exists. Aside from the phone itself, they also feature an equally stylish Bluetooth watch they so aptly called the Prada Link. We?re guessing it can be used in tandem with the Prada 2 phone so you can control it remotely Dick Tracy-style. There?s also a headset and leather pouch to go along with this branded line, but we?re not exactly sure if its part of the standard package of accessories or if you need to purchase it separately. We?re hoping that it?s the former as opposed to the latter, but at this point, we?re not ready to make any assumptions.

Sadly we have yet to receive confirmation on its final selling price and exact release date. Oh well, a little patience never hurt anyone, but looking at the LG Prada 2’s microsite sure got me interested all of a sudden.

Playing At Being An Adult

11/06/2008, 09:05 |

Writing out a check earlier this week, I had the strange feeling of just playing like I was an adult. Sort of like when I was a kid, when playing Monopoly or Life or some other game that gave you funny money. Look at me! I'm all growed up.

Perhaps it was the ceremony that goes into writing a check. Writing out the words for the dollars, doing the cents as figures over 100. Writing out the figure amount. The dating and, of course, the signature.

Who taught me all this? I suppose in high school some of it might have been explained. But really, I think it comes from having watched parents or others who had checkbooks before I did - seeing what they did and mimicking the same.

Hence the playing at adult. There was no adult school I went to, to teach me to buy groceries, buy a car, buy a home, to have a family. No manual to adult life. Suddenly, I was away from home at college, on my own, with the trappings of adulthood. The responsibilities of being an adult. But no real experience of being an adult, nor a guide to what that is supposed to be. Was I doing it right? Would I be discovered as not really adult, by all the other real adults around me?

Sometimes I'm confident in my adulthood. I can feel I am all grown up, know where things are going, how they should be. But then I can look back and think wow, how young I was and how little I really knew.

I've seen people who seem unquestionably adult like. They exude a sense of authority, or certainty or, I don't know - adultness. Grown up, no question - and I can feel like I still don't quite belong.

I confess. I still pretend my car is a spaceship, with invisible thrusters I can control as I fly through space. Maybe I'll never be fully adult, whatever that is.

Fusion Voicemail Plus App Is Visual Voicemail For Android

11/13/2008, 01:15 |

T-Mobile may not have an official Visual Voicemail service for customers, but PhoneFusion plans to change that—for the Google G1, at least. The app, which was previewed today at the Under The Radar Mobility Conference, is currently available on the Palm, Windows Mobile and Blackberry platforms, and works in a similar fashion as the VV apps on the iPhone and Instinct; the name, number, date and time for each of the messages in your inbox appears on the screen as a list of entries. As far as Android specific details go, there's not much info on the app except that it will appear in the Android Marketplace by the end of the year. [NewsBlaze via IntoMobile]

Facebook to Give Apps Seal of Approval - For a Price

11/19/2008, 18:04 |
Facebook plans to start charging for verifying applications built for the social network -- an optional process that has upset some developers despite the company's assurances it will bring plenty of positive benefits. Platform program manager Sandra Liu Huang said Tuesday that Facebook opened the verification process to developers on Monday. The process is meant to increase users' trust of applications that are posted on the site and to help developers wanting to build a serious business get more visibility with users, she said.

Photo: Motorola VE66 Slider Comes with ‘Widgets’ Photo 1

Motorola today announced the VE66 with CrystalTalk audio technology for clear conversations, a 5.0-megapixel camera and MP3 player.

The VE66 is a sleek, slider with the Motorola’s new widgets integration. With downloadable widgets, consumers can get real-time information on weather, sports scores, stock tickers, flight information, social media and news headlines.

It captures high-resolution images on its 5.0-megapixel camera. Pressing a dedicated camera key quickly auto-focuses, activates an LED flash, and if necessary, stabilizes the image and reduces red eye. Automatic color saturation delivers whiter whites and crisper blacks.

An MP3 player with USB 2.0 provides high-speed data downloads on a PC. Wi-Fi connectivity makes browsing the Internet or sharing photos, audio or video files easy. An integrated FM radio with RDS can help listeners “name that tune” while on the road.

With CrystalTalk technology, conversations are amplified and background noises reduced for a noticeable difference […]

Asus Eee Stick filed in the FCC Exhibits Report

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

Asus Eee Stick - Image 1

The Wii's definitely not alone now in the motion-sensing crowd, now that the Asus is going to include a familiar-looking peripheral to its Eee line of products. At least, that's what the latest find in the Federal Communications Commission says in the FCC exhibits list, which is a pair of Nunchuck-looking peripherals dubbed as the "Eee Stick."

We've had both Sony and Microsoft considering creating a motion-sensing controller for their own consoles; what does the Eee Stick offer for the Asus Eee? The report doesn't specify how it's actually going to be used in conjunction with the ultraportable laptop, but we now know that the package will include two controllers.

One of them has an analog stick and another has a D-pad. It will also include the necessary CD software to get it running, a USB dongle - and yes, even wrist straps.

We're actually pleased to see the diminutive, functional Eees get their own line of accessories, but will using a pair of motion-sensing controllers be actually useful for an ultraportable laptop aside from, say, using them for work presentations? Let's see what kind of punch the Eee Sticks pack when they finally get to see the light of day.

Why Microsoft Should Bid Again - and Yahoo Should Accept (Mathew Ingram/GigaOM)

Mathew Ingram / GigaOM:
Why Microsoft Should Bid Again — and Yahoo Should Accept  —  Now that Yahoo co-founder and CEO Jerry Yang has finally stepped aside, removing what many saw as one of the main barriers to bringing the two companies together, Microsoft should re-ignite acquisition talks with the company.
