Sony DR-BT160AS Bluetooth Headphones: Buyable Now for $130

11/18/2008, 17:45 |

The Sony DR-BT160AS Bluetooth Active Style Headphones popped up on Giz a few months back, and they looked promising if a bit odd, streaming stereo A2DP audio while packing a rechargeable lithium ion battery and a microphone for calls. But we had no pricing or availability information. Now, through the magic of press releases, we know that the headphones are available now for "approximately $130." That's not the most reassuring pricing announcement we've ever seen, but we'll take what we can get. [Sony]

Home Is Where The Beach Is

11/15/2008, 04:42 |

It's a breezy warm evening, and I reflect once again: home at last, home at last.

I've been back in Newport Beach for about four months now, and each day I think how happy I am to finally be home. At Home. It seems that for years I've been in search of home but never quite got there.

Somewhat unusual for an American kid -- families move around so much -- I stayed in the same childhood home from 3 to 18. But it wasn't a happy home. From around 13 or so, I just counted my time until I was Out.

Out to where? Out to a new place to call home? Just Out. And then I was out, at college and into a succession of places to stay. A campus apartment. Living in a trailer on the now sadly removed Irvine Meadows West campus trailer park (UCI literally paved paradise and put up a parking lot. My article on it remains trapped behind the LA Times paywall). The glory of moving to a beach apartment for the first time, of leaning out my window, looking between two other buildings and being able to see a sliver of the ocean. Good memories; but all temporary shelter. None of them home.

Then post-college, more apartments at the beach in Newport, but still none of them home. Who knew what I was going to do -- stay working in California? Go to graduate school? Would this internet thing take off? Each time I saw the beach, I savored it, knowing I'd inevitably have to say goodbye to it.

And then to Britain, where I really did finally have a home. At least in the purchased sense. I was a homeowner for the first time; I had all the trappings of a home, but somehow I never felt At Home. For me, home had to be back in California.

Trips back, there were many of them, always bittersweet. Always a return to seeing the beach and the continual goodbyes once again to it.

Now for the first time in over two decades (I am getting so old), I'm At Home again. Not renting. Not saying goodbye to the beach each day but hello. It's nice to see you. I'll see you tomorrow. And you're not going away.

Foolishness, in some ways. We never really know where we're going, where we're going to stay, what's to come. But at least I've got home for now.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic video review is probably longer than you think

11/20/2008, 00:32 |

We've seen a review of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and several videos of the device in action. What we haven't seen, however, is a video review... until now. Over at MobileBurn they've posted a series of four review videos of the touchscreen handset, and though it starts out a bit shaky -- the stylus is "not very good" and the build doesn't feel very "solid" -- the reviewer changes his tune by the end of the opus, and his opinion seems like it's evolved to a resounding "not bad." Hit the read link, grab a bucket of popcorn and consider yourself in for the night if you want to watch the full review.

Why Music Can’t Just Be Free: continuing on the debate

11/17/2008, 22:23 |

My ‘Why Music Can’t Just Be Free’ post has stirred up a hornets nest of debate and comment. As Juupiter’s weblogs don’t enable comments I’ve decided to continue the debate on my other weblog MusicIndustryBlog. My opinions are just that, and Jupiter has always believed that good opinions are shaped through debate. So if you want to join the debate join me over there. For those of you that have sent emails or direct messages via Twitter I will reply to you just as soon as I find time.

Note: my colleague Ian Fogg points out that I inferred in my previous post that SourceForge are a developer when they in fact a developer platform.

That was fast: Blizzard Authenticator now sold out

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Blizzard Authenticator sold out - Image 1If you were thinking of picking up that shiny new thingamajig called the Blizzard Authenticator, you'll have a bit more time to ruminate over your decision. Blizzard's officially sent out word that the Blizzard Authenticator has been sold out.

Over on the General Discussion forums for World of Warcraft, Tyren announced the news to the public, noting that "it will be several weeks before they're available again."

Tyren also mentioned the demand for the authenticator from non-US members of the North American realms and how said people were unable to pick it up. He explained further,

This was due to shipping-related issues with our store for this device that could not be resolved by the time it first went on sale. Rather than delay the launch, we felt it was important to make the Authenticator available to as many people as possible as quickly as we could. We're continuing to work on a solution for these players and will provide an update as further progress is made.

In any event, you'll have to wait if you still haven't picked up your Authenticator. In the meantime practice caution in your Internet habits to avoid malware that could compromise your account.

RIAA Gets Tennessee Law To Force Universities To Filter Networks For Copyrighted Content

11/18/2008, 23:44 |
After more than a decade of watching the entertainment industry (mainly the RIAA and the MPAA), one thing I've learned is that the organization never gives up in pushing its legislative agenda. If there's a setback in one area, you can be sure that others from the organization are eagerly pushing the exact same rules through some other angle. The typical MO is that they try to get federal legislation passed in their favor. However, if that fails, they switch to the fallback plans which involve international treaties and state laws. Both of these are great because they tend to get a lot less scrutiny. State laws are a bit of a pain, because you have to get a few of them approved to create the "groundswell" that makes other states jump on board, but changes to state laws can often pass through under the radar.

That appears to be what's happening in the effort to force universities to install filters monitoring their networks for any unauthorized transmissions. You may recall that the RIAA pushed strongly to get Congress to pass laws requiring filters. Basically, the entertainment industry first flat-out lied (yes, lied) about how big a problem file sharing on campus was, and that got some Congressional Reps (with plenty of campaign contributions from the entertainment industry) to introduce legislation punishing universities if they didn't filter their networks. Widespread outcry against that legislation helped water it down, but it appears the industry just moved on to state legislatures.

The RIAA is now celebrating the fact that Tennessee has passed legislation that requires universities to install filters if they've received at least 50 DMCA requests. Considering the massive number of DMCA notices that the RIAA has been known to file, this is hardly a large hurdle. The law will cost Tennessee taxpayers nearly $10 million in the first year, and another $1.5 million each year -- based on the state's own estimates. And for what? To put in filters that won't work, just to try to prop up an obsolete business model from legacy players in an industry that needs to learn how to adapt to the market?

Asus rumored to launch Eee Top all-in-one PC tomorrow, beginning at $499

We have recently seen the official announcement of the MSI Wind Neton and now we are seeing reports that Asus will be launching their competing all-in-one desktop as early as tomorrow.  The Asus all-in-one desktop PC is the Eee Top, and it comes in two models, the ET1602 and the ET1603.  The announcement is expected to come during an Asus news conference on November 20.

As for the specs, the ET1602 features a 15.9-inch touchscreen, a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Wi-Fi 802.11, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, and a pair of built-in speakers.  The ET1603 will offer similar features as the ET1602 but has a better (ATI HD3450) graphics card along with a battery.  Of course, the ET1603 weighs in at 9.7-pounds, and given that it seems the battery would serve more as a backup in case of a power loss, than provide for portability.

Still unknown is the pricing, although Asus CEO Jerry Shen did mention in the past that it would be a low priced device.  As for the actual availability, hopefully we will find that out, along with the official pricing tomorrow.

Desktop vs. Web

01/11/2008, 06:21 |

Every now and again the debate stirs up over the merits of desktop vs. web based software. The debate ends here! And the answer is simple - it’s both!

My co-worker and friend, Nick Bradbury, sums it up in one line:

“PS: As I’ve written before, I think the so-called battle between web and desktop apps is overblown. It’s a hybrid world, not an either-or situation.”

The Garbage Pickers Of Newport Beach

11/12/2008, 00:44 |

Throughout the day, people go through my trash cans. It's a depressing sight. Among the streets of affluent Newport Beach are legions of trash pickers, pulling out cans, bottles and other recyclable material. Most are Latinos, recent immigrants or illegal immigrants, I would guess. Often they might be accompanied by one or two small children. It always makes me thankful I'm not having to take my children to scavenge through trash cans, plus makes me wonder why things can't be better.

We don't separate our recyclable material in Newport. I don't know exactly why. One rumor is that residents are just too lazy. Another is that with the small streets and alleys in Balboa, the part of Newport where I live, there's not room for multiple bins. Instead, the city ships everything off to a "Materials Recovery Facility" where everything is sorted through by others, using machines and by hand, to pull out what should be recycled. Apparently, it gives the city a 50% recycling rate.

I guess. I've always wanted to somehow get a tour of this MSF and see the recycling happen in action. It always feels weird to just toss bottles and cans in with the rest of the regular garbage. And by doing so, the alleys of Balboa get turned a place for the scavengers to harvest each day.

A minor problem, aside from the inhumanity of people surviving by picking through your trash, is the inconvenience. Plastic garbage bags get ripped open, so that any pickings can be extracted. That lets in flies, and when it's hot, you get lots of them.

We consider putting out all the cans and bottle separately, so that people who wanted them could just get them in a far more humane and efficient way. The problem is, apparently, that the bags still get ripped open anyway, just in case there's stuff inside worth getting.

That led to a search for see-through bags, so that those coming to our trash cans could see there was nothing inside worth harvesting. It's one of those things you never imagine doing, standing in a Home Depot looking for see-through trash bags, so that young mothers with their children won't waste their time on your garbage.

We never found the bags. The harvesting in the alleys continues on, as well as in the trash cans along the beach itself. Such a world.

T-Mobile USA Releases Q3 Results - Data Up 28%

11/06/2008, 19:22 |

T-Mobile USA, Inc. today reported third quarter 2008 results. At the end of the quarter, T-Mobile USA had 32.1 million customers, adding 670,000 net new customers during the third quarter.

"In the quarter, T-Mobile took giant steps forward in driving new innovations to meet the pressing needs of our customers," said Robert Dotson, President and CEO, T-Mobile USA. "We introduced our customers to the T-Mobile @Home(R) landline replacement service at a time when saving money is a top priority for American households. We also established our new nationwide high-speed 3G services, which will cover 120 cities by the end of November. This network introduction was accompanied by the unveiling of the T-Mobile G1 with Google, the world's first device built on the fully open Android operating platform giving consumers access to some of the most innovative mobile applications to ever come to market. These and other innovations are helping us aggressively compete as we debut new and craved-for services that truly meet customer needs and inspire greater long term loyalty to our brand."

Other highlights on the data side:

-- Growth in messaging revenue continued to be the most significant driver of data ARPU, as customers continue to move towards purchasing plans that include messaging, including our unlimited voice and data plans. The total number of messages on the T-Mobile USA network increased to almost 49 billion in the third quarter of 2008, compared to 41 billion in the second quarter of 2008 and 21 billion in the third quarter of 2007.

Spore pre-orders in UK packaged with sweet bonus

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Spore - Image 1It was just revealed that gamers in UK who pre-ordered Electronic Arts' Spore (PC, Nintendo Wii, DS, Mac, and Mobile) from either GAME of Zawi will be getting a disc which contains the full creature creator. This means that gamers who do decide to pre-order the game will be able to start designing their creatures early.

Now, those in the know are probably wondering why would they do this since Electronic Arts will be releasing a downloadable version of the creature creator by next week. Well, the downloadable version will only allow users access to 25 of the items in the creature creator. This means that you won't be getting the full experience.

So if you plan on picking up the game when it comes out anyway, why not spring for the deposit fee and pre-order Spore? That way, you'll be getting the creature creator to play around with while waiting for the game to come out.

Google Voice Search: Worthy of the iPhone's Bottom Row

11/18/2008, 23:22 |
The new voice-actived Google Mobile app for iPhone is now available. For those who missed the news stories that -- somewhat prematurely -- predicted its arrival last Friday, it basically lets you say any search term or phrase into your iPhone and get search results within seconds -- even GPS-aware localized responses. So ... is it any good? Wow. That's right, wow. I mean, yeah, it's that good. I've been an iPhone owner since day one, upgraded to the 3G model, and this is the first application that's inspired me to remove one of the four core bottom applications on my home screen.
