Dear Recording Industry: Stop Whining, Start Making Money
11/19/2008, 06:30 |It's worth reading through the entire presentation, but the key points he makes: the industry has changed, and the record labels no longer have a monopoly on distribution, and it's time they got over thinking that they can stuff that genie back into the bottle. Instead, they need to realize that people are spending more than ever on listening to music -- just not on buying CDs. Once they realize that, they need to get into the game, but do so by realizing that, as labels, they no longer have total control. In fact, it's now the musicians and the fans who are in a position of power, and the role of the labels should be to help enable the connection between musicians and fans.

Obama tells you to GO VOTE! via text messaging
11/04/2008, 19:00 |NOTE: If you are reading this now, it could mean that you’re an early bird at the polls OR you’re still home and have not yet cast your vote. GET OUT THERE AND VOTE!
As reported from Bloomberg:
Tags: Campaign, McCain, Obama, Presidential ElectionTexting may do for the Democratic presidential candidate what arm-twisting precinct captains did in years past: prod millions to get out and vote. The Obama campaign plans to use the millions of cell-phone numbers it has amassed over the past 22 months to blast its supporters with that message today.
The biggest concern for the Obama campaign is getting young people — who have registered in record numbers and shown unprecedented interest in surveys — to turn out. In 2004, only 45 percent of those under 30 showed up to vote, according to Census data, making them just 16 percent of the electorate that year.
… Studies show that texting is among the most effective and cheapest ways of getting supporters, particularly blacks, Hispanics and younger voters, to the voting booth.

Save energy, save money: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii energy consumption put to the test
01/01/1970, 01:00 |To a degree, we can call each of these consoles a powerhouse in their own right: they generate cool graphics, keep us entertained, and make life as we know it generally fun. But to call each of them a "powerhouse", in the most literal sense (i.e. in the realm of energy consumption), then that's the question, ain't it?
The NRDC has published the findings of their research in a document called "Lowering the Cost of Play: Improving the Energy Efficiency of Video Game Consoles". Based on their results, the PS3 remains as the most power-hungry - energy-hungry, rather - console there is. Then the Xbox 360, followed by the Nintendo Wii.
The document is a rather interesting read, and somehow gets every point across without having to step on fanboy toes. While I'd like to outline everything they've come up with, for brevity's sake (you can read the document yourself at your own leisure), we'll throw in this chart. The chart below speaks for itself.

What I like about this study is that it takes into account the different versions of the consoles in their lifetime. Also, they've given some suggestions - practical and reasonable suggestions - to manufacturers, game developers, and gamers themselves for ways to be more mindful of energy consumption.
Their conclusion is sound and simple, without being too uptight and demanding:
The single most effective way to save energy is to power down your system after saving your game if necessary when not actively playing. If you own a console with a powersaving feature such as auto power-off after a preset time, use it.
Ting Ting Ting! Note to all students out there readying a paper on video games - this could be a vital resource for you! Unlike the other study on the civic effects of video games, this document from the NRDC is merely two pages long, making it an easy read. And I strongly suggest that you do - whether you're writing a paper on it or not.

01/01/1970, 01:00 |Podcasting Needs To Become "Personalized Video & Radio"
05/18/2008, 02:27 |Today, the reality is we have have almost unlimited choice of audio and video content from millions of sources. Everyone is becoming a "caster" of some form, whether it is audio bloggers to major media cable channels to you newspaper. Everyone and I mean everyone is starting to create audio and video content these days... just visit YouTube.com to see what I mean. This is starting to become a significant change for the larger and minor media companies as well and they are shifting fast to adapt, but many it will be too late. I think smaller broadcast radio stations will be hit first. I think the days of buying an hour of broadcast radio time for a lifestyle type radio show and reaching an audience is about over. Even taking that show to the Internet now is difficult. We are seeing so much noise online now and all our time to consume media content is getting spread too thin.
To the rescue is Personalized media and how that might work is to tell a software agent hooked up to your TV, on a website or your computer that will be an automated filter on content and make recommendations and suggestions (not search) to you on what you will most likely "Like" based on your past usage patterns. Sure this has some privacy issues, but it maybe the only realistic way we will be able to deal with the flood of media options we have today and in the future. We need our software to be smarter and make choices for us to save us time as I don't have time to sample millions of media choices.

SSDs too expensive? Make your own with Sans Digital's CF Enclosure
01/01/1970, 01:00 |
If it were easy to get SSDs for our computing gadgets, we would do so in a heartbeat - it's not as susceptible to damage as other storage devices, what with the absence of moving parts and such - but the problem is that SSDs cost a tad too much, with a US 1,000 price tag a pop for each 64GB SSD. But here's the good news: you can actually make your own SSD, and it'll cost you only about US 400.
Here's what you need: Sans Digital's new CR2T Compact Flash card enclosure that is priced at only US 99, and two 32GB Compact Flash cards (CF cards cost about US 150 each). Now, just place the two CF cards in the enclosure, then voila! Instant US 400 64GB SSD.
What's good about Sans Digital's new enclosure is that it gives the users an option between RAID 1 and nRAID settings, whichever works best for their computing needs. Using nRAID sounds like a nice idea - it practically combines the two CF cards into one drive.
Of course, there's a slight downside to it. Compared to a real SSD's uber-fast speed of 100MB per second, a Compact Flash card only reaches about 40MB per second, and that's just about the fastest you can find in the market. But hey, as long as it means that you're going to get a good US 600 savings, its still a good deal.

On Blu-ray This Week: June 30 to July 5, 2008
01/01/1970, 01:00 |It's time for another batch of Blu-ray movies this week! This batch features your usual healthy mix of content - drama, music, comedy - but this week's theme seems to be action as they comprise the bulk of eleven releases.
Headlining this batch is none other than the Caped Crusader of Gotham himself in Batman The Movie: Special Edition. If you're thinking that this is Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson as Batman and the Jiker respectively, you're mistaken. This one stars Adam West from way back in the heyday of the TV show. Watch old-school Batman battle fiends like the Penguin, The Riddler, and of course, The Joker.
More action follows with Leonardo DiCaprio as he assumes the role of Amsterdam, a 19th-century New Yorker whose father was slain by resident city bad-asses. What he uncovers later on is a bloody trail of gang-related violence that leads to the cause of his father's murder. If this flick leaves you craving for more psychological action, then Vantage Point is another one worth recommending. It tells the story behind the assassination attempt on the American president as captured in an amateur video, dissected to reveal a stunning truth.
On that note, you may also want to grab Point Break: Pure Adrenaline which takes you on an intense ride aboard the Southern California waves. Keanu Reeves stars as undercover agent Johnny Utah as he infiltrates a gang of surfers suspected to be behind a series of bank robberies. With skills on the board and cunning to stay low-profile, Utah must fulfill a mission that can potentially end up with hing sleeping with the fishes.
Okay, enough meanie-gritty stuff. Over to the lighter side of things, this week offers up a barrel of laughs with Get Smart's Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control while maintaining some action elements. Want more comedy hybrids? how about Meet the Browns: Special Edition or Sex and Death 101 ? They offer up a bittersweet blend of drama and comedy. Laughing and crying in one movie seems weird, but it can happen.
Or you can go for Drillbit Taylor: Extended Survival Edition if you just want the laugh minus the action and the drama. It explores the world of high school freshmen getting their feet wet on adolescence, running into mischief and lessons along the way.
If pure, unadulterated boo-hoos are your cup of tea, then you might want to consider getting Mad Men: Season One. In the cutthroat world of advertising in 1960's New York, is there a place for love, life, and friendship among highly-competitive ad professionals? You can find out by watching the maiden season of this TV series.
For those seeking some good music, we've got extremes waiting on the wings. For those who want their music loud and aggressive, Korn: Live at Montreux should be the bomb. If you're more of an easy listener, you can go for John Mayer: Where the Light Is and enjoy some light riffs.
Finally, we have the documentary Ganges which gives us an in-depth view of India's sacred river. More than the body of water, this video will show the subcontinent's rich culture and how it was built around this holy place.
That's it for now. Stick around and we'll update you on next week's up and coming Blu-ray releases. Happy viewing!

QuickJump QuickPeek branches out: introducing the Weekend Warriors
01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Hurrah! Weekends are made up of all the most awesome stuff. It's one of life's most satisfying things after all - perhaps second only to getting to scratch an annoying itch.
For one, most of us who get the weekend off (either from school or work - or both?) finally get to park our merry butts in front of the TV and play video games with impunity. Aside from that, we get to catch up on pretty much everything we missed out on during the week. Which is what we've been doing for the past 52 weeks, in case you were really living under a rock the size of Mars.
In QuickJump QuickPeek's second year, we decided to branch out... and dig deeper still. Because quite frankly, at the rate that each previous QuickPeek was going, it wasn't getting any quicker of a peek, if you get our drift. So with that, we'll be splitting it up and allow each of our blogs to go in-depth with the week's news!
Thus, we bring in the Weekend Warriors!
The QuickJump QuickPeek v2.0 changelog:
Yeap! From now on, each blog will be getting its own individual QuickPeek, each tagged under a Weekend Warrior label. This allows the individual teams to report on more news and add a little bit of editorial introspective into the week's news.
Yes, you heard us. This time around, QuickPeek - or should we now say Weekend Warrior? - won't just be recapping news. We'll be throwing in some incentive for you readers too. Little "behind-the-scenes" snippets that don't quite make it to the regular updates you find on the site.
So, who are the Weekend Warriors?
We'll have Weekend Warriors for all of our blogs in QJ.NET. That includes all gaming blogs - PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, PC, MMORPG, and WoW - plus those concerning Science and Technology - Science, Apple, Gadgets, and Mobile.
Check 'em out - lined up looking all pretty like that! Shiny banners for our new columns!
Gaming

Science and Technology

Wait - does this mean there won't be any QuickPeek anymore?
Yes and no. QuickPeek will still be around, sure! But of course, the meat of QuickPeek is in its Weekend Warrior children. Every week, once all the individual Warriors have been published, we can finally throw in the proud parent: a QuickPeek article acting as a hub.
Think of it this way. The Weekend Warriors are the branches, while the QuickPeek is the trunk. The QuickPeek will be linking to all the separate Warriors just so you guys have a central article to use as reference for jumping from one article to another.
We hope you guys have fun with the new system. If you have any comments or suggestions, you know what to do. The first set of Warriors are going up in just a couple, so stick around, why don'cha?
Glad you waited? Apple confirms iPhone 3G; 8GB costs US 199
01/01/1970, 01:00 |Zounds! It seems Apple has picked today to be a big day for iPhone news. Apple has finally announced the release of iPhone 3G, and it looks to be a big upgrade over the previous iterations of the iPhone.
Steve Jobs' keynote speech was inundated with applause from the crowd as he made the announcement. Notes Jobs,
We've learned so much with the first iPhone. We've taken everything we've learned and more and created the iPhone 3G. It's beautiful. This is what it looks like. Black back! Thinner at the edges. Full plastic back, it's really nice.
The keynote is currently ongoing, so expect a fuller update later in the day. For now, here's what you can expect from iPhone 3G:
- Solid metal buttons
- Flush headphone jack
- 3.5 inch display
- Camera
- Improved audio
- Improved battery life
- Faster da
