11/06/2008, 19:22 |

T-Mobile USA, Inc. today reported third quarter 2008 results. At the end of the quarter, T-Mobile USA had 32.1 million customers, adding 670,000 net new customers during the third quarter.

"In the quarter, T-Mobile took giant steps forward in driving new innovations to meet the pressing needs of our customers," said Robert Dotson, President and CEO, T-Mobile USA. "We introduced our customers to the T-Mobile @Home(R) landline replacement service at a time when saving money is a top priority for American households. We also established our new nationwide high-speed 3G services, which will cover 120 cities by the end of November. This network introduction was accompanied by the unveiling of the T-Mobile G1 with Google, the world's first device built on the fully open Android operating platform giving consumers access to some of the most innovative mobile applications to ever come to market. These and other innovations are helping us aggressively compete as we debut new and craved-for services that truly meet customer needs and inspire greater long term loyalty to our brand."

Other highlights on the data side:

-- Data services revenue was $850 million in the third quarter of 2008, representing
17.3% of blended ARPU, or $8.90 per customer, compared with 16.6% of blended ARPU, or $8.60 per customer in the second quarter of 2008, and 15.4% of blended ARPU, or $8.10 per customer in the third quarter of 2007. Data services revenue increased 28% year over year.

-- Growth in messaging revenue continued to be the most significant driver of data ARPU, as customers continue to move towards purchasing plans that include messaging, including our unlimited voice and data plans. The total number of messages on the T-Mobile USA network increased to almost 49 billion in the third quarter of 2008, compared to 41 billion in the second quarter of 2008 and 21 billion in the third quarter of 2007.

New MacBook Pro benchmarked within Boot Camp

11/19/2008, 16:00 |

Finally, someone with more money that I have (I want a new MacBook Pro, but haven't yet convinced myself to shell out the dough to replace my old yet trusty G4 12" Powerbook) has put the new MBP and those shiny graphics chips to the test, and drummed up some real benchmarking numbers in Boot Camp. It turns out to be PC World, strangely enough. And the verdict? Well, it's not quite so great.

The good news is that the MacBook Pro is faster than ever, and graphics have significantly improved. And trust us, any improvement over the old chips is a step in the right direction.

The bad news is that in a practical situation (like playing the Crysis demo, which is actually about a year old at this point), a MacBook Pro in Boot Camp at the highest settings isn't actually playable, and the 15 fps you might squeeze out of it on a good day still can't compare to the 50 fps you can get out of even average video cards in a Windows PC. If the graphics are turned down, it's a different story -- we've seen a new MBP run games well in Boot Camp already, so it'll play, but Apple still has a ways to go to be competitive with brand new games.

But let's keep this all in perspective -- it's very good news when you compare the new MacBook Pros to the old ones. Apple is at least realizing that 3D performance needs an upgrade in their units. Maybe next time around they can bring some software updates into the mix as well, and we can start to see some real competition in high-end performance.

AT&T Launches My Communities For Social Networking

09/09/2008, 14:39 |

AT&T just announced they are launching a mobile platform for their mobile phone subscribers to stay connected with their favorite social networking platforms. The application, developed by Intercasting Corporation, allows users to maintain and manage several social networking platforms with one easy to use interface.

“Our social networking applications are among our highest-performing category, and we anticipate sustained interest from consumers as social networks continue to explode in popularity and diversify in purpose,” said Mark Collins, vice president of Consumer Products for AT&T’s wireless unit. “The My Communities application brings unmatched simplicity, increased functionality and deeper integration to this space, a combination we believe will win over active users and newcomers alike.”

My Communities is compatible with MySpace, the mobile-only community Rabble, blogging sites LiveJournal and Xanga and the photo-sharing site Photobucket. My Communities also features sites whose members share common characteristics such as ethnicity (AsianAve, BlackPlanet, MiGente), faith (FaithBase) or sexual orientation (GLEE). Subscribers get instant access to additional sites as soon as they are added to My Communities and will be alerted to updates when they launch the application ? no upgrade is required. Through My Communities, subscribers can register for social sites directly from their phone without ever having to go to the Web, a feature not common with most other social networking applications.

This application is available on 23 devices for a monthly subscription of $2.99 a month. To find out more or to see if your mobile device qualifies, please visit AT&T’s Media Mall.

LG launches Prada II teaser site, matching Bluetooth watch

11/19/2008, 00:14 |

Not that it wasn't official already or anything, but nothing demonstrates dedication to a product like an exclusive home on the web. Yep, LG has just launched a standalone microsite for the altogether sexy Prada II, and while you already know about the specs -- HSDPA, WiFi, 5-megapixel camera, 3-inch 400 x 240 pixel capacitive multi-touch display and quad-band GSM connectivity -- you probably weren't aware of the matching Prada Link Bluetooth watch. As you'd expect, the timepiece syncs with your Prada II and shows your incoming calls / texts, and we'll go out on a limb and presume that it tells time, too. Sadly, the tidbits we're most interested in (a release date and pricing) aren't clearly available on the site, but we'll be refreshing like madmen hoping for that to change.

Five physics lessons for Obama

11/19/2008, 18:35 |

Five quick physics lessons for President-Elect Obama from the author of Physics for Future Presidents (@ Amazon). One of the lessons: nuclear power is the way to go.

It's true that after 300 years, nuclear waste is still about 100 times more radioactive than the original uranium that was removed from the earth. But even this isn't as scary as it sounds. If the waste is stored underground in such a way that there's only a 10 percent chance that 10 percent of it will leak -- which should be more than doable -- the risk will be no worse than if we had never mined the uranium in the first place.

Muller asserts that safe nuclear power is a solved technical problem and that the use of it is a political issue.

Fiio unveils the Shuffle look-a-like E5 headphone amplifier

Fiio has just released the E5, and despite it offering a design very similar to that of the iPod Shuffle it is not a media player but instead a headphone amplifier.  The E5 comes as a replacement to the previous E3, and in turn offers 30-percent more power than the E3.  The E5 has a power output of 150mW at 16? or 12MW to 300? and less than a 0.009-percent distortion at 10mW.  Additionally, the E5 has onboard volume controls (an item that was lacking on the E3) and a built-in battery that should offer around 20 hours of use.  Otherwise the E5 measures 1.73 x 1.50 x 0.48-inches and weighs in at a lightweight 0.92-ounces.  The E5 is currently available and retailing for around $20.

MacNN: Snow Leopard could ship 1Q 2009

11/19/2008, 18:00 |

Snow Leopard could ship as early as January, according to comments made by the director of Apple's Unix Technology Group.

Jordan Hubbard said at the Large Installation System Administration conference last week that Mac OS X 10.6 will ship in the first quarter of 2009, according to MacNN.

This primes the Macworld Expo rumor pump: Scheduled for January 5, Steve could debut new quad-core iMacs in addition to showing off this new version of the operating system.

This is not to be confused with Mac OS X 10.5.6, a minor update, which could be available as soon as Friday.

Limited edition Bionnic Commando items available with preorder

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
If you're into Bionic Commando (PC, Xbox 360, PS3), then you're probably into retro stuff. After all, we haven't seen this title since the NES days (not counting Rearmed, which is retro-esque in itself). If you are into the retro, then there are some freebies being offered at GameStop that may interest you: Patches! (joy)

The patches will be available if you preorder the game. Mind you, supplies are limited.

Patches - Image 1

Bionic Commando Lunch box - Image 1If you don't need no stinkin' patches (they don't actually stink. I just couldn't resist saying that line). Then maybe a rare Bionic Commando lunch box? Now THAT's retro for you.

The lunchboxes are part of an extremely limited run at GameCrazy so if you've got plans to get one, I suggest you do so as soon as you're done reading. Hey, maybe they'll fetch a good price on e-bay?

Just a reminder, Bionic Commando will be released on the Playstation 3 on February 3, 2009.

Walmart will sell iPhones starting Dec. 28

11/19/2008, 19:00 |

Filed under:

Walmart will be taking a pass for most of the holiday shopping season with one particular item: the iPhone. It will begin selling the handset December 28, according to Jamie Townsend, of research firm JRPG.

Boy Genius Report also notes that the phone will be sold in some Sam's Club stores as well. The blog broke the news about Walmart's talks with Apple, but originally said the smartphone would hit shelves last Saturday.

Walmart seems to be capitalizing on post-holiday shopping fervor, with BGR's Zach Epstein speculating, "Won't people be happy when they find out Apple's handsets popped up at discount prices three short days after Christmas?" It depends on how meager Christmas is, I suppose.

The handsets will apparently be activated in-store. No pricing details were released.
