I Want an iPhone Interface on Windows Mobile
04/03/2008, 19:46 |So, what do you do when a customer asks if you can create a Windows Mobile application that looks like an iPhone app? Well, if you?re smart, you?ll run. If you are not, like me, you?ll give it a go. Seriously though, creating a rich user experience with an iPhone-like look, feel, and interaction is hard if not impossible to attain on a Windows Mobile device today. The tools for implementing complicated business logic and algorithms on Windows Mobile devices are fantastic; want to interact with a camera or bar code scanner, stream live video, implement complex data structures or OO architecture, build an intricate ORM/relational database app, or do some other complex bit twiddling, that?s no problem on Windows Mobile. If you want to make a stunning Windows Mobile user experience ? good luck. There?s no CSS treatments you can leverage or Ajax goodness? you gotta build your fancy shmancy controls from scratch and that?s no fun. When I created the NewsGator iPhone reader (m.newsgator.com) I had a great UI toolkit to work with (thanks to Joe Hewitt), but no such luck with Windows Mobile.
So, in this case I spent many painful (but oddly enjoyable) hours writing custom controls to build a fairly interesting and attractive RSS ?widget? for Windows Mobile? there are some screen shots below. Yeh, I know it?s no iPhone app but it?s not bad…
As a side note, after seeing some of the demos of Silverlight running on mobile devices (Windows AND Nokia ? that?s right Nokia), I?m pretty psyched to see this technology flourish. It may be just what the doctor ordered. Flash Lite is another possibility but has been painfully slow to get adoption. Oh, there?s the iPhone SDK now too which is sure to enable some beautiful mobile apps. Good times!
IE Mobile 6 Will Not Be Available For Existing WinMo Smartphones
11/13/2008, 21:50 |
The Windows Mobile team has confirmed that the upcoming IE Mobile 6 browser or "IE 6 on 6" will not be made available as a separate download for current WinMo 6.1 smartphones. Instead, the update will only show up on devices released starting at the end of this year or in early 2009. The reason, according to Microsoft, is that "the rich media experiences that IE Mobile 6 enables require more powerful, advanced devices." IE doesn't have a whole lot of fans, but if you already have a WinMo smartphone it would suck to miss out on what appears to be a huuuge improvement. [Mobile Burn]

11/20/2008, 06:01 |Adobe To Demo Flash On Mobile (But Only Windows). Still ?Working? On The iPhone.
11/17/2008, 05:59 |
Adobe’s Flash Player is on 98 percent of all desktop computers, but it is still struggling to make the jump to mobile phones. If you want Flash on a mobile device, right now you have to settle for a compromised version: Flash Lite. But Adobe is committed to bring the full Flash Player experience to mobile phones, as evidenced by its Open Screen Project. On Monday, at its Adobe MAX developer conference, it will demonstrate Flash Player 10 running on a Windows Mobile phone. (However, Flash won’t actually ship on Windows Mobile until late next year). Product manager Michele Turner tells me:
We will be showing the first delivery of Flash on mobile phones, on other platforms. You will see it on Windows Mobile.
Microsoft, if you recall, was also early to adopt Flash Lite for Windows Mobile, despite its parallel development of Flash-competitor Silverlight. So it’s not too surprising that it would be the first to run Flash 10 on Windows Mobile. Turner also indicates that an “Android port” is coming. (Update: In fact, it looks like the Android port is well underway. During today’s announcement, a demo of Flash running on the G1 was shown.)
But what about the iPhone, which famously doesn’t use Flash? (Although there’s been some talk of that happening). Turner will only say:
We are working on Flash on the iPhone, but it is really up to Apple
One of Apple’s objections to Flash is that it is a CPU hog and is not optimized for the ARM11 processors that power the iPhone. In what seems to be an effort to address that concern, Adobe will also be announcing a closer collaboration with ARM to accelerate the adoption of both Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR on ARM-powered devices.
Once that collaboration bears fruit, maybe we’ll finally see Flash on the iPhone. But I’d be willing to bet my iPhone that we’ll see it on Android phones first.

Want to see Flash running on the G1? Here?s the video
11/18/2008, 19:30 |After yesterdays announcement that Adobe was working on Flash for both Windows Mobile and Android, we mentioned that a brief demonstration of Flash running on the G1 was shown. Don’t believe it? The proof is in the pudding. The delicious streaming video pudding.
While there are a few apparent framerate stutters, this is by all indications a work in progress for Adobe. The element was embedded on a bare page, without any other elements whatsoever - not exactly how they’re generally served. This is presumably to ensure that this not-yet-optimized version of Flash had as many resources as possible for the demo, but hopefully the final version will be able to handle more than standalone SWF files.

11/20/2008, 00:19 |Today Google has launched Gmail Themes; this new feature allows users to customize the appearance of their Webmail application with a range of new looks. Google is all set to roll out this new feature over the next few days.
Gmail Themes is a departure for Google, as they have not been known for offering anything with color and style. Google are also adding smiley?s to their Gmail service, in the hope of adding a bit of fun to their service.
Google are going all out to offer users a new Gmail experience, and are even willing to get rid of their Gmail logo on some of the new skins. I wonder how many new skins there are to choose from, and if you can edit them in any way?

Sprint Nextel May Outsource Thousands Of Jobs
11/20/2008, 00:36 |Outsourcing is now standard among cellphone carriers, whether it's for call centers or retail sales. But as Sprint (NYSE: S) Nextel looks for ways to right its listing ship, it is mulling a fairly dramatic outsourcing effort that could involve thousands of its IT and network-operations employees, the Kansas City Star reports. A spokesman for the carrier declined to give specifics on the outsourcing idea other than to say it was an option. "What we spend on our network per customer is more than what our networks are spending," said the spokesman, John Taylor.
Macquarie Research analyst Phil Cusick recently suggested the carrier might be exploring outsourcing IT-related jobs to IBM and network operations jobs to Alcatel Lucent or Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC). He thinks the carrier could outsource as many as 5,000 to 10,000 employees through the move. "Network outsourcings typically involve transferring the affected network-operations employees (though not the network itself) to the vendor, which will then 'right-size' the cost structure," Cusick wrote recently in an investor report. "Given (Sprint's) redundant iDEN and CDMA workforces, we would expect significant layoffs (including in Kansas City) that (Sprint) may not have the political stomach to do itself."
It's not an entirely new idea in the industry. Carriers have various functions that operate internally and externally, oftentimes moving in both directions depending on performance and other metrics. Sprint Nextel is working on improving the customer experience, re-building its brand and increasing profitability, Taylor said. "The other focus that we have is that we really want to simplify our business and that's been true from the very beginning (when Sprint acquired Nextel in 2005)? We've begun the process of turning things around, but there's a lag of perception in the marketplace and it's understandable."

MMS-capabilities coming soon to a Swedish iPhone?
11/18/2008, 23:18 |
The oft-bemoaned lack of certain, um... capabilities of the the iPhone is forcing individual companies to take desperate measures, it seems. It's not entirely clear, but MacWorld says it's confirmed with Telia that the Swedish-Finnish carrier's developing an MMS-enabling app for the iPhone. MacWorld says the app will hit the market in the next two months, which is great news for everyone in Sweden. If you live anywhere else in the world, however, you'll just have to continue on, rueing the day you ever encountered Apple's MMS-spurning, copy and paste-hating handset.Update: Though the source is Swedish, it's entirely reasonable to believe that this'll spread across all of Telia's markets (and the world?). Thanks, commenters!
[Thanks, Martin]

10/03/2008, 14:38 |Motorola has won a second consecutive Industry Choice Award. This award is given to the most innovative and esteemed product deployments - Motorola took the award for their WiMAX USB 100 Adaptor for laptop computers.
“As WiMAX and other high-speed technologies continue to gain traction around the world, Motorola will continue to be in the forefront of designing innovative products and solutions that let consumers and enterprises enjoy the benefits of broadband everywhere,” said Darren McQueen, vice president, Wireless Broadband Access Technologies, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility.
Shaped like a thumb drive, the USBw 100 offers indoor and outdoor mobile and nomadic wireless connectivity through WiMAX networks operating in the 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands. The USBw 100 plugs into a USB port on a laptop and quickly connects to an available WiMAX network. Users on the go are free to surf the web, check emails, and stream video and audio files just as they would from a home computer. The USBw 100 is expected to be available in Q4 2008.
RIM working on an LTE BlackBerry? Of course they are.
11/17/2008, 20:54 |
According to BGR, RIM is already crackin’ away at an LTE device so that it’s ready for launch whenever LTE officially goes live.
For the sake of the folks out there who don’t spend their lives memorizing every last mobile industry acronym: LTE stands for “Long Term Evolution”, and is one of the standards set to make up the next generation of mobile network technologies. In other words, LTE (along with competing technology, WiMax) is 4G. Sprint is siding with WiMax, Verizon and AT&T are going with LTE.
With that in mind, RIM’s rumored work with an LTE handset should come as a surprise to no one. With RIM’s US presence made up predominately by AT&T and Verizon, both of whom are backing LTE, not having a suitable device ready ASAP would be a huge misstep. Hell, I’d be willing to wager that they’re working on at least two of them - one touchscreen (a la Storm), and one in the more traditional candybar form.

Ello..can you hear me now..ello?
11/19/2008, 13:07 |One of those days where it’s a sick day for me watching Eureka seasons one and two and my NCIS..all because it’s a sick day for me. Well, now I have over a few sites to rework, and well, Richie asked a question to me just earlier on of how to get a stable connection over at Shah Alam as many are cussing and swearing of even having a decent phone line connection, be it streamyx, or Celcom or any other cellular communications as it’s a black out area thanks to the military base nearby, and the lack of permissions or planning rights by Sime Darby for transmitter. This is a little break from me modifying my CHAT.NU Community Blog (it’s a multi site blog) and sort out those bugs in the system.I appreciate the break from my brain picking.
This is the actual transponder used by mobile companies for their Basic 2.5G systems and maybe the basic 3G (not UMTS 2100/WCDMA) which actually looks like someone connected the aircon piping over, and if you open it up…well …

It is basically a small little 2 inch thingy…which I dared not pry open the insides as I fear for the radiation that is still may be left in there. Notoriously, for your information, transponders and smoke detectors carries Curie (discovered by Marie Curie whom died of radiation sickness) which is an active radiation element. Unlike Plutonium or Uranium, it’s not that likely to kill unless it’s electrically charged up. These photos are CLASSIFIED in some places and if you ever touch those conducting cables in underground or above ground car parks like Queensbay Mall Penang or KLCC, you will get a quick headache within 20 seconds and 10 minutes to death as the amount of radiation , though may be only 50Watts is the equivalent of having your head inside a microwave oven set at 5000W! Ref point, 50W can transmit the same as over 7000 mobile phones.
In the end…you end up like this…(graphic images, not suitable for some)
Which is a a sad thing to see…death of kids and the more heart breaking… of the images of their grave yard. I was trying hard to focus on the windmill but kept on getting the blurr images all round. Spooky…maybe..just it is a grim reminder that some parents have to face, to bury their kids, way before their time.
Some take life for granted..and try to get rid of their own children, through abortion or what means, whilst some..actually love and wanted to have their own. It was thing I can’t get it out of my head. Someone’s Prince and Some mommy’s princess. In the end, in the age of technology, only memories goes by. I lost 3 brothers….and through unmarked graves. I lost mine too. And in turn, we carry on living like a living dead…waiting for us at the other side.Little Angels waiting for their parents to bring them forward. It’s a thing. I seriously can’t get a clear decent shot. All images, how mounted my tripod were….well, it’s something to remember.
In remembrance of those who left before us, Al-Fateha.God Bless their souls.
Seriously..I really need to get rid of these bugs!
Asus still sticking with the whole 7-inch screen thing
08/01/2008, 17:30 |
The Asus Eee line of 7-inch netbooks appears to be alive and kicking, thanks to some images over on Eee PC News (in German). It?s believed that the Eee PC 701SD will come in three flavors (see this leaked slide); one marked ?701SD(30G HDD)?, one simply marked ?701SD?, and one marked ?701SD-4G?, so we?ve got one with a 30GB standard hard drive, one with a 4GB flash drive, and one with who-knows-what.
Aside from that, Laptop notes some subtle updates in the form of a chassis similar to the 901 series (except for the round edges), a new logo on the lid, slightly separated touchpad buttons, and the assumption that these machines will use Intel?s Atom processor. I?d really like to see the screen resolution get pushed to at least 1024 pixels wide versus the current crop of 7-inchers? 800 pixel wide resolution. It just makes so much more sense for web browsing.
More detailed specs, pricing, and launch dates are yet to be revealed but, hey, Asus has plans to release a total of 23 different models when all is said and done. So maybe we?ll just see these falling into our laps, rapid-fire style.

NFL Sprints to wireless
11/06/2008, 15:50 |The Wall Street Journal reports today that “Sprint Will Kick Off a Series of Eight Football Phone-Casts”:
For the first time Thursday, a National Football League game — the Cleveland Browns vs. the Denver Broncos — will be broadcast on Sprint mobile phones as part of the wireless company’s exclusive partnership with the league. That partnership deal is valued at about $500 million over five years.
Over the next seven weeks, Sprint will phone-cast the eight games that are televised solely on the NFL Network, the league’s cable channel. For the past three seasons, the NFL has struggled to persuade major cable operators to include its channel in their basic programming packages.
With the NFL Network is available in only about 40% of American households, Sprint executives hope the NFL games can do for their company what the league’s Sunday Ticket package has done for satellite-television provider DirecTV Group. Sunday Ticket, which is exclusive to DirecTV, allows dedicated fans to see every NFL game on Sunday afternoons, and has been crucial to DirectTV’s growth.
Android-like Google Sync now available for BlackBerry phones
11/20/2008, 06:23 |
Thanks to the new Google sync, BlackBerry users will soon be getting a taste of how it feels to live the Android life. While the HTC G1 may lack a desktop sync tool, it does feature automatic syncing with Gmail?s address book and vice-versa, providing you with a safe way of backing up your contacts on the internet. This same feature is now headed BlackBerry?s way and, in true Google fashion, it?s free of charge.
For instructions on how to get the Google Sync update, just head on over to mobile.googl.com/sync and enter your phone number. Once complete, an appropriate link will be sent to your mobile phone. I guess this is Google?s way of spreading the love to the rest of the mobile community even if you?re not yet ready to hop on the Android bandwagon.
