iPhone 3G line - paid by Apple?

iPhone 3G line - paid by Apple

Waiting in a tent outside an Apple store for a week and get a slightly updated phone - and pay for it as well - is just so absurd that it honestly makes me think that it’s just a PR thing from Apple. The photo above is taken today outside the Apple Store in NYC.

What do you think? Would you stand in line for more than a couple of hours to get an iPhone 3G? I wouldn’t stand in line for more than 10 minutes…

Human Search Engines Seek to Punish

06/30/2008, 19:55 |

via TimesOnlineUK

China Internet Users are taking search engines to a whole new level. Recent public comments regarding the Chinese earthquake victims and Tibet have lead to a sort of internet lynching by human search engines.

Groups of users seek out all details about a citizen who makes comments against China or its decisions, once they find out all the details about that persons life, they harrass them into apologizing or….into hiding in some cases.

Case in point is the young woman who killed a kitten wearing high heeled shoes and posted a video of it on the Internet. Citizens in China found out everything they could about the woman including her name and harassed her until she apologized and lost her government job.

And they don’t always go care if they have the right person,

“In an unfortunate case of mistaken identity, it turned out there was another exiled Tibetan called Lobsang Gendun living in Utah. Since the targeting of his namesake began, Mr Gendun, a self-proclaimed ?Olympic supporter?, has received hundreds of aggressive emails and telephone calls.

?Yes, we curse him to death and we are eager to see him go to Hell,? a participant in the hate campaign against Mr Gendun ? it did not seem to matter which one ? said. ?But do you see us pouring petrol round his house? We are just expressing our rage.?

Educational Mobile Content

06/25/2008, 06:14 |
Interesting article worth a read from the Mail & Guardian about the educational potential of mobile content. This is a trend worth watching and at Movaya we've had a number of conversations recently with content developers looking to bring "edutainment" to mobile devices.

Often, when I tell people what we do - help distribute games and applications to mobile devices - a standard response is something like - "Oh, you help people find ways to screw around and waste time on their phones." And although we love playing games and using our phones for other diversions, there is a lot of potential benefit playing learning and memory games. Game-based learning is getting a fair amount of focus right now, and many parents are becoming aware of the potential of games as learning tools.

We'll be announcing some partnerships in this space in the coming weeks and are updating our system to have new categories that cater to this area as well. Stay tuned.

T-Mobile first to blanket UK in HSUPA

07/04/2008, 05:06 |

What's the first network to claim a true, full HSPA across all of the United Kingdom? Vodafone? Orange? 3? Nope -- try T-Mobile, which has just flipped the switch on its HSUPA upgrades nationwide to bring upload speeds to a blazing 1.4Mbps (theoretically, anyway). The figured they'd commemorate the occasion by giving download speeds a little boost, too, so those are now up to 7.2Mbps, making Great Britain an absolutely fabulous place to do a little mobile computing right now. Oh, and hey, T-Mobile USA, you could seriously learn a lesson or two from your counterparts across the Atlantic here.

Zounds! It seems Apple has picked today to be a big day for iPhone news. Apple has finally announced the release of iPhone 3G, and it looks to be a big upgrade over the previous iterations of the iPhone.

Steve Jobs' keynote speech was inundated with applause from the crowd as he made the announcement. Notes Jobs,

We've learned so much with the first iPhone. We've taken everything we've learned and more and created the iPhone 3G. It's beautiful. This is what it looks like. Black back! Thinner at the edges. Full plastic back, it's really nice.

The keynote is currently ongoing, so expect a fuller update later in the day. For now, here's what you can expect from iPhone 3G:
  • Solid metal buttons
  • Flush headphone jack
  • 3.5 inch display
  • Camera
  • Improved audio
  • Improved battery life
  • Faster data downloads via 3G
  • Launch in 70 countries
  • US 199 price tag for the 8 GB model, US 299 for the 16 GB model
  • To be out on July 11

Correction: AT&T-iPhone (AP)

AP - In a July 1 story about the new version of the iPhone, The Associated Press, relying on information from an AT&T spokesman, erroneously reported that the carrier is working on creating a prepaid plan for the phone. Spokesman Michael Coe later said he miscommunicated, and that there will be no prepaid plan for the iPhone 3G.

Sharp presents solar LCD TV prototype for the 1.6 billion people on earth with no electricity

07/04/2008, 18:18 |

Today Sharp unveiled a prototype of a 26-inch LCD Aquos TV [JP], which is solely powered by solar energy. The company said one day, their solution might bring television to all the 1.6 billion people on earth who don’t have access to electricity.

Sharp’s new green TV uses half of the power existing LCDs need. In comparison to the power consumption of the 28C-PB500 [JP], a CRT TV Sharp introduced in 2002, the prototype looks even more interesting since it boasts just 25% of that old model’s annual power consumption.

A  highly advanced triple-junction thin-film solar cell battery is used to power the green TV. The solar panel/TV kit will be showcased during the G8 summit in Hokkaido starting July 7th.

Verizon?s new World phone, the Motorola Napoleon Q9 shows its face

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Verizon Wireless branded Motorola Q9 Napoleon

It looks like Verizon will be introducing a third variety in their Q9 lineup, and as of now its being code named “Napoleon.” It does however have something special in store for worldwide business travelers as it will not only offer CDMA EV-DO Rev. A support but it will also include full GSM support, meaning you can take and use this worldwide.

The Q9 Napoleon will be running Windows Mobile 6.1 and feature a 320 x 240 display, 2-megapixel camera with flash, Wi-Fi, stereo speakers and ship with a 1500mAh battery. In addition to the added support on the inside, the new world edition Q9 has also gotten a little face lift with a new shiny bezel around the edges.

Also, just good measure they have included a fingerprint scanner on the back, I guess when traveling worldwide you should never have your data unsecured.

As of now, no pricing or release information has been let loose, but as usual we will keep you posted when we find something out.

Sprint: On the wrong SERO plan? Give us our phone back.

07/01/2008, 15:06 |

When word got out that the Sprint would require customers to carry a $70-per-month plan if they wanted to rock an Instinct, folks were a bit worried about whether or not their SERO plans would keep them from activating. (For those who don’t lurk phone forums, SERO is intended as a discounted plan set for those with friends/family that work for Sprint. In practice, it’s a discounted plan for anyone who can track down a Sprint employee email address)

To the surprise of many, the Instinct activated just fine on the SERO plan. No sneaky workarounds or trickery needed - it just worked. Unfortunately, it wasn’t supposed to work. Only those on the $99 SERO Unlimited plan were supposed to have been allowed.

Hoping to grab the “Worst Reaction of the Week” title, Sprint has decided to essentially push the blame onto the customers. Rather than eating the loss as a system error they should have covered from day one, they’re calling up SERO/Instinct customers and giving them an ultimatum: Change plans, or give us the phone back.

Losing money sucks, but once the customer is signed and out the door, it’s on the lap of the company that allowed the screw up to slip through. Sprint has yet to respond, though a number of customers have confirmed the situation.

Is Podcasting on the "Net Sidelines"?

04/06/2008, 22:16 |
Slashdot has a post drawing the conclusion that podcasting is now on the "Net Sidelines". I must say that from everything I am seeing here on the Zune team; working on podcast content and its distribution; it is alive and doing very well.

Sure podcasting may have declined in the hype of it and the techno-elite have moved on to Twittering areas now, but podcasts or downloadable portable media is still growing and doing very well. I do believe though that the technology of podcasting will eventually disappear from user view as better user interfaces make it easier to find and connect with this media on many always connected data platforms.

I am also hoping that this xml based revolution will transform and bring efficiency to the music, television and film industries around digital download distribution.

Rumor: Fallout 3 denied classification in Australia

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Fallout 3 - Image 1Rumors have been circulating on the internet that Bethesda's post-apocalyptic themed video gaming Fallout 3 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC) may not be making it to the land down under.

A poster on the GameSpot forums stated that the game has been denied classification by the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) Board of Australia.

The rumor stated that Fallout 3 was denied classification because it features use of Morphine. The presence of this in the game is said to fall under the OFLC set of reasons for not classifying a video game, specifically this one:

Depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults

If this rumor holds true, then the game can not be sold on retails shelves in Australia. In addition, we can probably expect a resurgence in the talks on expanding the rating system in the country from being limited to MA15 to going as high as R18 .

Motorola's worldly Q9: "Napoleon" breaks cover for Verizon

07/04/2008, 01:14 |

It looks like Motorola and Verizon are getting ready to take a third crack at the Q9 form factor, following up the Q9m and Q9c -- and this time around, there's a little something extra in store. On top of the EV-DO Rev. A radio, the so-called "Napoleon" (codename, of course) features GSM, because -- surprise, surprise -- businesspeople who use Windows Mobile devices tend to do just a bit of traveling. It looks like Moto has taken this opportunity to give the Q9 meme a little nip-tuck job, too, with a rounded body and a tastefully-applied ring of chrome around the top edge. They've even tossed in a fingerprint scanner for good measure, a tip o' the hat to the suits who'll undoubtedly populate the upper 90 percent of this sucker's client base. No word on a release date or price, but can we cautiously submit a thumbs-up for the design direction here?

EMI and Infospace Reach Settlement on Ringtone Royalties Lawsuit

07/04/2008, 21:24 |

EMI, in the midst of its own management reorg, has settled its ringtone royalties lawsuit with Infospace, though the terms were not disclosed. It did disclose the settlement in an SEC filing late yesterday. Infospace was sued by the music label in early 2007, to the tune of $100 million for underpaying royalties on using its music for ringtones. At that time it alleged that Infospace and its then-subsidiaries Moviso and Premium Wireless Services had been underpaying royalties and selling ringtones for songs to which they held no licensing rights...EMI's publishing also alleged InfoSpace (NSDQ: INSP) was selling expressly restricted songs, such as John Lennon's "Imagine," and selling ringtones in worldwide markets where it had not been granted license. Since then Infospace has closed down or disposed off its mobile content related businesses.

EMI changed some parts of the lawsuit in August, and asked for lower damages. Infospace had filed a counterclaim. According to the SEC filing: "The EMI Parties charged that the Company breached two ringtone license agreements by underpaying royalties and infringed the EMI Parties' copyrights by making unlicensed use of the EMI Parties' works. The EMI Parties claimed in excess of $10 million in damages for the alleged breaches of contract, and claimed statutory damages for alleged copyright infringement of 'many millions' of dollars. The Company denied the EMI Parties' allegations and counterclaimed for no less than $1.5 million based upon the EMI Parties' alleged breach of contract and tortious interference."

As for the settlement: "The Settlement Agreement concludes the EMI Litigation, and InfoSpace does not expect that the settlement reached with the EMI Parties pursuant to the Settlement Agreement will materially and adversely affect the Company's business or results of operations."
