Correction: AT&T-iPhone (AP)
07/02/2008, 20:00 |AP - In a July 1 story about the new version of the iPhone, The Associated Press, relying on information from an AT&T spokesman, erroneously reported that the carrier is working on creating a prepaid plan for the phone. Spokesman Michael Coe later said he miscommunicated, and that there will be no prepaid plan for the iPhone 3G.

Nokia 7210 Supernova 2.0MP Entry-Level Handheld Displayed
06/27/2008, 11:16 |
|
Nokia today displayed its 7210 Supernova, a simple slim handheld in a choice of Bubble Gum Pink and Vivid Blue gloss finish.
With the 7210 Supernova, users can listen to music sideloaded from a PC or purchased from the Nokia Music Store. They can manage songs with the Nokia Music PC client. Music and videos can be played and saved with a microSD memory card slot. The 7210 Supernova offers an integrated 2.0-megapixel camera and access to Flickr for one-click photo sharing.
"As we rely more heavily on mobile phones to stay connected, they increasingly know everything about us and have become a window into our worlds," said Jo Harlow, Vice President of Nokia. "With the Supernova range, we set out to give people the ability to set themselves apart in the same way that they would with a traditional statement accessory."
The Nokia 7210 Supernova is available in the third quarter of 2008 with an estimated retail price of $190 (120 EUR) before taxes and subsidies.

Paying $599 for iPhone 3G that?s still locked to AT&T
07/05/2008, 19:44 |
Many current iPhone owners will be happy to upgrade to the 3G iPhone for the obvious improvements and if you are on certain phone plans, it could even mean a free next generation iPhone.
The basic price of an iPhone 2.0 is $199 but you will need to take out a new 2-year contract with AT&T, if you do not want to do that then its going to cost you.
The problem with buying the 3G iPhone with no contract is that you will have to pay $699 for a 16GB and $599 for a 8GB iPhone; although it is the first time the United States has had this option.
What I have trouble with is if the phone is still locked to AT&T, does it make any sense to buy an iPhone 3G with no contract for $599 and still be locked to AT&T?
For people who do not like being tied to contracts and still want Apple?s phone, I guess having that freedom will come at a heavy price. Are you willing to pay it?

Desktop vs. Web
01/11/2008, 06:21 |Every now and again the debate stirs up over the merits of desktop vs. web based software. The debate ends here! And the answer is simple - it’s both!
My co-worker and friend, Nick Bradbury, sums it up in one line:
“PS: As I’ve written before, I think the so-called battle between web and desktop apps is overblown. It’s a hybrid world, not an either-or situation.”

Matias Duarte, designer behind Sidekick and Helio, now developing Palm's next-gen UI
07/04/2008, 02:31 |Filed under: Cellphones
So we heard from a very reliable source that mobile user interface guru Matias Duarte -- who you may know as the man behind the Sidekick and Helio UI / user experiences -- actually left Helio late last year to join up with Palm. Although no announcement was made, we hear he and his gang of designers jumped ship (well before Helio completely flooded) to take on the monumental task of designing the UI for Palm's next-gen mobile OS (aka "Palm OS 2.0 or II"). His resume online now lists him as "Senior Director, Human Interface and User Experience" doing "Something new..." since September 2007; we got in touch with Palm, who confirmed that he's now under the company's employ.Of course, expectations should be pretty high -- Palm's only been promising this supposedly game-changing OS since around 2004, and the company's reputation and pedigree is (or at least it used to be) in groundbreaking mobile UI design. But this news also kind of makes us wonder: if they didn't have a killer UI and user experience team already in place and long-since working their asses off by late 2007, exactly how far along are they on this thing, anyway?Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tech Stars
03/11/2008, 04:35 |Do you have that entrepreneurial itch that you can?t shake? When I was coming out of undergraduate school, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur but I had no outlet to explore this desire. I took a job working in my field of mechanical engineer which I enjoyed, but @ the time I really wanted to explore my idea of an online classified system (this was 1989). I convinced my dad that it was a good idea but it pretty much ended there. Hmm? imagine if I had a chance to explore this concept? Perhaps eBay would have been founded earlier
Well, today there is no excuse for not pursuing your dream. There are plenty of options out there and thanks to the open tubes on the internet those options are easy to find.
One of the best options for young, aspiring entrepreneurs is TechStars. This is an amazing opportunity to nurture your ideas and learn from the best. You will be exposed to brilliant folks who have ?been there and done that?. And to top it off, all the people involved in TechStars are good people!
The founder of TechStars, David Cohen, is one of the brightest tech minds I have ever met, and he is down-right a generous and kind human being. Don?t get me wrong though, David will not hold back and will let you know what?s on his mind and that is another trait that I admire and aspire to replicate. You?ll also get introduced to folks like Brad Feld ? I have not had an opportunity to work too closely with Brad, but when you hear him speak and recognize the legacy he is creating in the Boulder Tech scene you realize this is a special individual and you should pay close attention. The opportunity to learn from folks like this is on par with a degree from a top notch university, is condensed into one summer, and you get a little bit of cash to boot.
If you are thinking about TechStars stop now and just apply. Do it and thank me later! The application deadline is coming fast - http://www.techstars.org/apply/

What's the first network to claim a true, full HSPA across all of the United Kingdom? Vodafone? Orange? 3? Nope -- try T-Mobile, which has just flipped the switch on its HSUPA upgrades nationwide to bring upload speeds to a blazing 1.4Mbps (theoretically, anyway). The figured they'd commemorate the occasion by giving download speeds a little boost, too, so those are now up to 7.2Mbps, making Great Britain an absolutely fabulous place to do a little mobile computing right now. Oh, and hey, T-Mobile USA, you could seriously learn a lesson or two from your counterparts across the Atlantic here.[Via Tech Digest]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
