11/19/2008, 16:09 |The Chicago Tribune gives us an update on the two young men featured in Hoop Dreams, the award-winning documentary about high school basketball stars trying to make their way through life and, hopefully, to the NBA.
Gates, the reserved one, has become an authoritative force who leads a church in the Cabrini area. He is married with four kids. Agee, a spirited charmer, doesn't have a regular job but is launching a line of "Hoop Dreams" apparel. He has five kids by five different women.
Agee also spends time working on his non-profit foundation that works with underprivileged kids. Hoop Dreams is available in its entirety for US viewing on Hulu.

Just in case Samsung has yet to create a dual SIM DuoS handset that really struck your fancy, here's yet another to consider: the S9402. Expected to boast a luxurious outfit (and matching price tag, we imagine), this here candybar will tout a 2-inch QVGA AMOLED display, an all-metal frame, 1GB of internal memory, a microSDHC card slot, Bluetooth 2.0, USB connectivity, FM tuner, a 5-megapixel camera (with video mode) and a complete lack of 3G support. Word has it that it'll be launched first in Russia, though we suspect surrounding nations won't have to wait too long to indulge.

10/06/2008, 03:23 |Save energy, save money: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii energy consumption put to the test
01/01/1970, 01:00 |To a degree, we can call each of these consoles a powerhouse in their own right: they generate cool graphics, keep us entertained, and make life as we know it generally fun. But to call each of them a "powerhouse", in the most literal sense (i.e. in the realm of energy consumption), then that's the question, ain't it?
The NRDC has published the findings of their research in a document called "Lowering the Cost of Play: Improving the Energy Efficiency of Video Game Consoles". Based on their results, the PS3 remains as the most power-hungry - energy-hungry, rather - console there is. Then the Xbox 360, followed by the Nintendo Wii.
The document is a rather interesting read, and somehow gets every point across without having to step on fanboy toes. While I'd like to outline everything they've come up with, for brevity's sake (you can read the document yourself at your own leisure), we'll throw in this chart. The chart below speaks for itself.

What I like about this study is that it takes into account the different versions of the consoles in their lifetime. Also, they've given some suggestions - practical and reasonable suggestions - to manufacturers, game developers, and gamers themselves for ways to be more mindful of energy consumption.
Their conclusion is sound and simple, without being too uptight and demanding:
The single most effective way to save energy is to power down your system after saving your game if necessary when not actively playing. If you own a console with a powersaving feature such as auto power-off after a preset time, use it.
Ting Ting Ting! Note to all students out there readying a paper on video games - this could be a vital resource for you! Unlike the other study on the civic effects of video games, this document from the NRDC is merely two pages long, making it an easy read. And I strongly suggest that you do - whether you're writing a paper on it or not.

PC Magazine Goes Out Of Print — Founded in 1982 and at times so rich with ads its issues reached as many as 600 pages, Ziff Davis's PC Magazine will issue its last print edition this January, thereafter becoming an online-only publication. Ziff Davis, which recently exited bankruptcy will lay off seven print production employees.

Every Thursday night is Bingo Night at my local dive bar. The prize for hitting five in a row? Free drink tickets. And a good round can mean endless photo ops for me and my crew. As excited as I was to start capturing the, uh, memories, I was a little disappointed by this camera's bulk. At just over 6 ounces and 1.4 inches thick, there's no squeezing it into a back pocket. But 8-megapixel resolution, combined with a sharp 5X optical zoom, guaranteed that every celebratory shot of Jameson was captured. Reliving the hilarity the morning (or afternoon) after was a snap. I just hooked the cam to my computer via the included USB cable and transferred the images with the push of a button. Next Thursday, I'll probably opt to leave this beefy cam at home, but I'll cherish those intoxicating images forever.

11/19/2008, 22:12 |Filed under things I really don't understand: Silver Towers/University Village, part of a residential superblock complex in Greenwich Village and designed by I.M. Pei, has been granted landmark status by New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Said the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, who battled to preserve the buildings:
Silver Towers is the first post-war urban renewal superblock development in New York City to be landmarked. While such urban renewal projects rarely receive high marks for design, Silver Towers is considered a watershed moment for one of the late 20th century's most respected and influential architects. The design won awards from the American Institute of Architects and the City Club, was dubbed "one of ten buildings that climax an era" by Fortune Magazine, and was cited as a basis for which Pei received the 1983 Pritzker Prize -- the most prestigious award for architects -- for his body of work up to that time. Landmarking Silver Towers not only helps preserve an eminently livable place and honors a great work of architecture, but it also acknowledges the importance of our city's past efforts to create affordable housing and public art.
These may or may not be great buildings, but that whole complex is just this big sucky void between the Village and Soho that no one can get rid of now. Blech.

11/19/2008, 19:21 |
|
Motorola today announced the VE66 with CrystalTalk audio technology for clear conversations, a 5.0-megapixel camera and MP3 player.
The VE66 is a sleek, slider with the Motorola's new widgets integration. With downloadable widgets, consumers can get real-time information on weather, sports scores, stock tickers, flight information, social media and news headlines.
It captures high-resolution images on its 5.0-megapixel camera. Pressing a dedicated camera key quickly auto-focuses, activates an LED flash, and if necessary, stabilizes the image and reduces red eye. Automatic color saturation delivers whiter whites and crisper blacks.
An MP3 player with USB 2.0 provides high-speed data downloads on a PC. Wi-Fi connectivity makes browsing the Internet or sharing photos, audio or video files easy. An integrated FM radio with RDS can help listeners "name that tune" while on the road.
With CrystalTalk technology, conversations are amplified and background noises reduced for a noticeable difference in clarity. A second microphone further enhances audio quality by eliminating ambient background noise from calls.
FastScroll one-touch navigation wheel lets users quickly navigate through menus.
"The VE66 delivers on consumer's demand for more personalized listening and imaging experiences on a mobile phone," said Tracey Koziol, Corporate Vice President of Motorola.
The Motorola VE66 is expected to be available Q4 2008.

Peace Walker - new game or just a regular trademark?
01/01/1970, 01:00 |New game? Or just another trade mark? The USPTO shows us this registration for Peace Walker, but no word on the actual purpose of this file. It's a good source of speculation, but not all registrations turn out to be games. Sometimes, stuff like this get filed for use within games and/or to protect software. From what we're seeing from the file though, it's definitely game-related.
Peace walker, huh? It does sound like a game though. Another Suikoden, maybe? Another underage hero leading an army sounds very Peace Walker material. Unlikely though, since Suikoden titles just come with the series title and a number. Metal Gear, perhaps? Your thoughts?

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
After more than a year in development, the sequel for the highly-acclaimed racing title Colin McRae: DiRT (PC, Xbox 360, PS3) has finally been officially announced by Codemasters. Simply called Colin McRae: DiRT 2, the sequel will continue on the excitement of rally driving racing game, keeping the legacy alive of the late Scottish rally driver who passed away even before the release of the original title.
Says executive producer Gavin Raeburn,
Colin McRae was all about the speed, the excitement or rally driving. Later his showmanship shone through in events such as the X-games, the Dakar Rally and the Race of Champions. He could do things with a car that no one else would and that's where we're taking the series with new events at the extreme edge of rally and motorsport. It will be a great tribute to an incredible champion.
Colin McRae: DiRT 2 will sport an enhanced version of the EGO engine, the same one used in the impressive-looking GRID. Also featured are comprehensive and improved online modes. The sequel is scheduled to come out on a yet-to-be-specified date in 2009, and will be completing the whole course of gaming platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, and PC.

The news of Usenet?s death has been greatly exaggerated
08/01/2008, 17:53 |Sascha at PCMag writes a charming little piece on the death of Usenet as a method of discourse and its eventual rebirth as a repository for porn, spam, and pirated warez. He recalls the days of “serious conversations” on 8-bit Atari architecture and net.manners.
In a way inconceivable in today’s Web-fragmented marketplace, Usenet was where you went to talk. Conceived back in the idealistic, non-profit days of the Internet, it was?well, it is, but it mostly was?a series of bulletin boards called “newsgroups” shared by thousands of computers, which traded new messages several times a day.
Sascha brings us back to 1993, the year when most of the current blogger kings were just entering college. Their discussions were precursors to the open, sad eyed moping of JenniCam and her ilk, the snark of the Gawker empire, and the basis for just about every social network on Earth. After all, if emo nerds could create a complex network of interconnected forums, think of what Ning can do with VC funding!
I personally never got into newsgroups as a communications medium although I now use the network for another form of data transmission. Is Usenet dead, as Sascha posits? I don’t think so. As long as there are folks who thing a command line is better than a mouse, the original text-only social network will live on. Sure, ISPs will shut down access out of mislaid kiddie porn fears but the real pros know where to go to get their agnst-filled, nit-picking, obsessive fix.

Android-like Google Sync now available for BlackBerry phones
11/20/2008, 06:23 |
Thanks to the new Google sync, BlackBerry users will soon be getting a taste of how it feels to live the Android life. While the HTC G1 may lack a desktop sync tool, it does feature automatic syncing with Gmail?s address book and vice-versa, providing you with a safe way of backing up your contacts on the internet. This same feature is now headed BlackBerry?s way and, in true Google fashion, it?s free of charge.
For instructions on how to get the Google Sync update, just head on over to mobile.googl.com/sync and enter your phone number. Once complete, an appropriate link will be sent to your mobile phone.
