Toshiba Satellite P100-ST9612 Laptop

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

On a recent fact-checking mission for Wired, I was called upon to infiltrate the depths of several online 3-D games. Thank goodness I had this baby as my gaming rig. My supercute blonde avatar looked even more buxom on the 17-inch, 1,680 x 1,050-pixel screen, while the 2 gigs of RAM let me simultaneously surf the Web and storm Virtual Laguna Beach-heads. It was also perfect for perusing other media, ranging from DVDs to YouTube clips, while a pair of integrated Harman Kardon speakers handled audio output deftly. Too bad this notebook is way expensive and ungainly (huge 16 x 11-inch footprint). But when I'm fighting in World of Warcraft or just living my Second Life, the Satellite is my wingman of choice. -- Angela Watercutter

Warhawk, fl0w expanding in December

10/18/2007, 06:00 |

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Action, Casual

Expansions are coming for popular Playstation Network titles fl0w and Warhawk, according to Game Informer magazine. Firing Squad reports that a recent issue of the magazine reveals expansions in development for both downloadable titles, with planned releases in December.
The Warhawk expansion will introduce a dropship into the game, which can pick up and relocate ground vehicles. The fl0w expansion, meanwhile, will add a multiplayer mode to the abstract game, as well as a new playable creature. While expansions for Warhawk are a no-brainer, it remains to be seen how typical downloadable content will fit in with the incredibly atypical fl0w.

Etymotic Research ety8 In-The-Ear Bluetooth Earphones

01/01/1970, 01:00 |

I'm on the bus. There's a horrible, fingernails-on-chalkboard screech every time the vehicle comes to a stop. A big guy next to me is hacking up buckets of phlegm. A teenage girl behind me is whining into the pink RAZR plastered to her face. But it's OK. In a few seconds, it will all disappear. I plug the Bluetooth adapter into my iPod, switch on the square wireless earphones, and pop the buds in my auditory canals. Ah, the sweet sounds of solitude -- just me and my personal playlist. When I get up to leave, I usually stumble as the bus lurches, but with this setup, there's no catching a thumb on a wire, no earbuds flying into a stranger's lap. The buds stay put, and I'm on my way. Sure, they look silly, but my long hair hides them well. Anyway, looking a bit goofy is worth a blissful morning commute. -- Aria Pearson

Canadian Call Center Woes

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Here's an article from the Edmonton Journal about the closure of a Toronto Dominion Bank call center in the city, for a net loss of about 140 jobs.

Though this is a Canadian company shutting down a Canadian call center, there have been other Canadian call center closures that can be laid at the foot of the weak U.S. dollar.

Outsourcing to Canada (an important destination in the so-called "near-shore" outsourcing model) is no longer saving U.S. companies money due to the unfavorable exchange rates for the U.S. dollar.

A recent Datamonitor report covered on TMCnet by associate editor Patrick Barnard revealed that companies are truly starting to pack up Canadian operations. The most notable U.S. outsourcer to do so thus far is Cincinnati-based Convergys Corporation.

The Datamonitor report also cites a waning of interest in Canada in relation to the increasing interest in having Spanish-speaking agents on staff for the growing consumer base of American Hispanics. (Canada does not offer a labor force with a high percentage of Spanish-speakers.)

Matias Duarte moves to Palm to design Palm OS 2.0

07/04/2008, 19:32 |

Will Palm fall back?

With high expectations, Matias Duarte, the one famous for the Sidekick’s extremely friendly UI allegedly moves to Palm.

So it’s time to bring in the big guns. With Palm’s latest disappointment with the Foleo and the not-so-great worldwide response to the Centro, Palm plans to reinvent themselves once again starting with a revolutionary operating system. In retrospect, the Palm OS was the crown jewel in the early 2000’s because of its simplicity, common sensical approach to computing. It wasn’t a heavy developer nightmare to write for and the Palm devices were attractive to consumers. Today we have that same sort of thing - but in the form of Apple’s iPhone and soon, Google Android. To wow consumers, Palm really needs to think several miles outside the box.

Personally a move to wow audiences would be to go the other direction and reinvent the QWERTY thumb board to something we’ve never seen before.

Podcasting is Growing Up

09/28/2007, 16:48 |
I would like to clarify my statements from my last post in this blog about why I think the closing of Yahoo's podcast directory is a sign of a maturing podcasting industry.

I do believe that it is an industry segment that is growing in importance as more major and indie content companies join with content RSS feeds. We are seeing the formation of industry associations (ADM) and a recent round of podcast related company closures and sales. These are clear signs that an industry is maturing and consolidating. The industry is moving beyond the initial burst of enthusiasm around podcasting. Podcasting is is still the fastest growing new medium that needs to evolve into a legitimate media delivery platform. I believe that like digital media streaming that also started with huge enthusiasm back in the late 90's, the podcasting industry hype dust is settling and I believe we are seeing this now. The weaker players always get weeded out during the beginning of the maturity phase. The truth is that Yahoo did a poor job with their directory and failed to keep improving and adapting to the needs of podcast listeners. I am glad that Yahoo decided to shut it down as it was not helping listeners or podcasters. The one bad part about Yahoo closing is the perception that podcasting as a concept is in decline, which is just not the case.

I do also believe that podcast discovery and simple one-click subscription processes is the biggest problem and opportunity for the podcast industry, iTunes has been a great start but it can be done so much better with personalization technology. I am very excited to be working with the growth of RSS based digital media syndication, as I think it will be the base for all of our personal media playlist so in all of our media players in the future.

Nokia Signs Warner to Music Deal

07/01/2008, 22:16 |

Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia said today that Warner Music Group has agreed to join its soon-to-be launched music service, giving its device users access to music published by Warner.

"Warner Music Group has been a pioneer in developing new digital music business models and we are pleased to have them" on board, the head of Nokia's entertainment unit Tero Ojanperae said in a statement.

The Nokia Comes With Music service, expected to be launched during the second half of 2008, will let Nokia users to download unlimited music from various artists onto their mobile devices during the first year of ownership.

After a year, customers can keep the downloaded music, Nokia said.

The Warner Music Group is the third major label to cooperate with the new Nokia program after Universal Music Group International and Sony BMG. Nokia said it is in discussions with many other international labels.

Record labels are looking to Nokia and others to challenge the dominance of Apple's iTunes as they have struggled to negotiate with the U.S. group on a level footing on issues such as pricing.

Researchers boast of progress with printed electronics

07/05/2008, 12:02 |

Filed under:

There's certainly no shortage of researchers working on printable electronics these days, but a group from the EU-funded CONTACT project is now boasting of a "major step" towards being able to print electronics on everyday materials. At the moment, they seem to be focused primarily on printing organic TFT displays directly onto glass plates, which apparently required the use of some aggressive solvents that "attack" the organic materials between the TFT and liquid crystal layers. Their current Labratester 1 printer (pictured above) apparently still has some problems precisely lining up each layer, however, but they say that'll be fixed with the addition of some optical cameras in the Labratester 2 machine they're now working on. Eventually, they say the system could be used to easily and cheaply print displays directly on watch faces or glasses, or even print other electronics onto paper or other fabrics.

Independence day!

4 de julio: ¿La última actualización?

07/05/2008, 17:58 |

Paciencia amig@s!

Laser-etched tattoos: don't try this at home, kids

07/05/2008, 06:32 |

It's not too often case mods cross over into the world of body mods, but when you think about it, it was kind of only a matter of time before people started using laser-etchers to give themselves immaculately detailed burn "tattoos." It's unclear what kind of lasting effects using an Epilog on your own skin will have, but don't be too stunned if it just peels right off and eventually becomes some weird, blurry scar. In other words, attempt this dumbass feat at your own risk. Oh, and you didn't think we would let this one off without a video, did you? It's after the break -- too bad there's no smell-o-vision to give off the nauseating scent of precision-burnt human flesh.

Telus bringing HTC Touch Diamond to Canada

07/03/2008, 21:00 |

As if Canada doesn’t already have enough good stuff goin’ for it already, Canadian wireless carrier Telus has announced that they will be carrying the HTC Touch Diamond in its CDMA form “later this summer” (presumably by the end of September.)

This’ll make Telus the first North American operator to carry the handset. Both hardware and software-wise, the Touch Diamond is a bit of a stunner - to recall the specs, it’s got a 2.8″ touch screen, the TouchFlo 3D interface, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and 4 gigs of internal memory.

Now, would someone please announce plans to carry the HTC Touch Pro in the states before my head explodes?

Lightning Review: Motorola ROKR E8 Music Phone

07/04/2008, 19:00 |

The Gadget: The Moto E8 ROKR is a candybar music phone that makes use of a touch-sensitive, haptic feedback panel on the bottom half of the phone. It's nearly buttonless, save for a few on the side. galleryPost('motorolarokre8', 3, '');

The Price: $199 (after 2-year contract)

The Verdict: Long story short, the hardware is great, the music interface is decent, the T-Mobile interface sucks. But let's start with the good. Not only do I like build quality, and how the button layout changes according to the phone's function, I also like that the haptic feedback really feels like the phone has buttons (Herrman is still convinced there aren't haptics). As a music player, the capacitive ring and menu system give it an iPod sort of feel, which is nice. It's pretty easy to use, and doesn't suffer from much lag. Syncing with Windows Media Player is a relatively painless process, but that means it's also Windows only (Mac Users have to transfer files via MicroSD, ugh).

The thing that makes me never want to touch the phone again is T-Mobile's UI skin, which takes competent phone software and turns it into a laggy, unresponsive pile of crap. Seeing as this phone is a T-Mo exclusive, I think it's important to highlight how much I dislike it. Frequently I try to enter into a menu for the camera, or text messages, only to be thrown back to the MyFaves home screen. After hitting another button in response, the phone decides it wants to go to the app I was originally trying to use, and then respond to my subsequent button pushing. The dialog boxes also like to clash with the menus, which allow for frequent input errors. I liken the process to playing voicemail tag with someone, which is to say it's totally annoying.

Other than that, it's just slow, the capacitive ring is no good for navigating the main menu, and trying D-pad feels cramped. So while I think the phone is an above average candybar, I'd hold out for a version running different software.

Zune Springs Ahead To 2.5 Update

05/06/2008, 11:18 |
I have been working late tonight at Zune working on getting the new spring update to Zune users. The update included the release of NBC and MTV TV show content in the Zune Marketplace. I am a little loopy now as it has been many late nights here over the past month getting ready for this release. I have been doing the content programming of these new TV shows and podcasts.

I have also been working with NBC and MTV to get the marketing pieces and content offerings together for this launch. I think this is a big step for the Zune as it moves us into competing with iTunes directly with top quality video content.

A couple of highlights for the new release:
- Zune Cards now go to the device: listen to your friends music recommendations on-the-go.
- The social is now in the client.
- Mini-feeds keeping you up-to-date on all your friends music at Zune.net.
- Enhanced friends search.
- Reputation badges for passionate promoters of entertainment they love.
- New metadata editing tools
- Gapless playback (great for live concerts!!)
- The inclusion of NBC in our launch video partner list: get The Office, Heroes and 30 Rock here!
- An incredible line up of shows from MTV, Comedy Central, Adult Swim and Vh1
- Over 800 shows at launch in the Zune Video Store
- Integration with Windows Live Messenger

Former Intel Chair Andy Grove: Energizing the Rollout of Plug-In Cars

07/05/2008, 13:00 |
Former Intel Chairman Andy Grove has a knack for sensing when circumstances should force changes at a company or an industry -- and how to respond. He even has coined a term for it: the "strategic inflection point." Now the retired chairman of the world's largest computer chip maker thinks the term applies to energy and transportation, where record-high gasoline and oil prices have spurred interest in alternative energy sources and next-generation vehicles. During the past year and a half, Grove has created his own crash course in electric power and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

1.5 Billion Mobile Internet Users

06/25/2008, 22:20 |
Market Intelligence and research firm IDC released some data from their Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast which should put a smile on everyone's face who is in the mobile content space.

From the release:

Nearly a quarter of the world's population - roughly 1.4 billion people - will use the Internet on a regular basis in 2008. This number is expected to surpass 1.9 billion unique users, or 30% of the world's population, in 2012, according to IDC's Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast.

"The Internet will have added its second billion users over a span of about eight years, a testament to both its universal appeal and its availability," said John Gantz, chief research officer at IDC. "In this time, the Internet has also become more deeply integrated into the fabric of many users' personal and professional lives, enabling them to work, play, and socialize anytime from anywhere. These trends will accelerate as the number of mobile users continues to soar and the Internet becomes truly ubiquitous."

While the PC is currently the dominant means of gaining access to the Internet, IDC expects the number of mobile devices accessing the Internet will surpass the number of online PCs by 2012.

Additional highlights from IDC's Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast include the following:

* Users will access the Internet through more than 1.5 billion devices worldwide in 2008, including PCs, mobile phones, and online videogame consoles. By 2012, the number of devices accessing the Internet will double to more than 3 billion, half of which will be mobile devices.

* Roughly 40% of all Internet users worldwide currently have mobile Internet access. The number of mobile Internet users will reach 546 million in 2008, nearly twice as many as in 2006, and is forecast to surpass 1.5 billion worldwide in 2012.

* The most popular online activities today are searching the Web, finding information for personal use, using Internet email, accessing news and sports information, and accessing financial or credit information. In addition to these activities, more than 50% of online users worldwide are using instant messaging and playing online games.

In case you need any help with the math,

1.5B people connecting to the Internet from their mobile phones.
50% play games online.

That sounds like at least 750M mobile gamers worldwide. My research shows the current number of mobile gamers worldwide at 165M.
