Nintendo Game & Watch collectors poked, prodded, exposed

07/05/2008, 17:20 |

Filed under:

Nintendo Game & Watch
When their moms told them that they needed hobbies, collecting Nintendo Game & Watch machines was probably not what they had in mind. We're not about to judge Andy Cole or Michael Panayiotakis, two collectors who have all 60 Game & Watch handhelds ever produced. New in box. Untouched by human hands. So why did they do it? Because they could, we suppose. In an interview by DS Fanboy, the two Game & Watch collectors are deconstructed and investigated, revealing such nuggets as once spending $1,200 on a boxed Super Mario Bros. Special Edition, keeping their products out of the sun and air, and some advice on starting a collection of your own. Hit the read link to see the collectors in action.

EA announces Spore Windows, Mac system requirements - Image 1

Electronic Arts, together with internal studio EA Maxis, have announced the system requirements to run Spore, though we haven't found any indication of what the bare minimums would translate to in gameplay.

The evolution, strategy simulator has been designed to execute on specific system specifications depending on the choice of your operating system and graphics system implementation. The requirements for Windows XP are as follows:
  • 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor or AMD equivalent
  • 512 MB RAM
  • A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
    • ATI Radeon:
      • 9500, 9600, 9800 and variants
      • X300, X600, X700, X800, X850
      • X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950 and discrete variants
      • 2400, 2600, 2900 and variants
      • 3650, 3850 and variants
      • FX 5900, FX 5950 (FX supported only in Windows XP)
      • 6200, 6500, 6600, 6800 and variants
      • 7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950 and variants
      • 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800 and variants
      • GMA 950, GMA X3000, GMA X3100
  • At least 6 GB of hard drive space
For Windows Vista, players will have to beef up their computer's memory banks to 768 MB of RAM, with all other specifications consistent to those required for running in Windows XP. Gamers on the Mac will have to make sure that their system's algorithm crunching muscle must be on par with the following:
  • Mac OS X 10.5.3 Leopard or higher
  • Intel Core Duo Processor (unknown speed rating, possibly 1.8 GHz per core)
  • 1024 MB RAM
  • ATI X1600 (X1900, HD 2400, HD 2600 supported) or NVidia 7300 GT (7600, 8600, 8800 and variants supported) with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100
  • At least 4.7GB of hard drive space for installation, plus additional space for custom content (storage space requirement subject to change)
Laptop users and gamers planning on running Spore on ITX machines (those with integrated graphics chipsets) may attempt designing creatures while in transit when installed on a mobile, lightweight rig with these specifications:

Windows portion:
  • Intel Pentium D 2.6 GHz per core, Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz per core, or AMD equivalent
  • Intel integrated graphics chipset 945GM and above (965 )
  • 768 MB RAM
Mac portion:
  • Dual 2.0 GHz CPUs or Intel Core 2 Duo 1.7 GHz per core minimum (may not run if below these specs)
  • Integrated Intel GMA X3100 minimum (any lower will present very poor performance)
The hard drive storage space requirements on Apple's side is subject to certain changes, so we'll be updating you sometime soon. Until then, it's time to prep our machines for  Will Wright's major, 10-year spanning global gaming phenomenon which launches on September 7.

Wal-Mart confirmed to be selling the iPhone 3G December 28th

11/19/2008, 21:29 |

For weeks now there have been rumors of Wal-Mart eventually carrying Apple?s iPhone 3G. Now it has been confirmed that starting December 28th, select Wal-Mart locations as well as a few Sam?s Club stores will be carrying the AT&T exclusive handset.

The iPhone 3G will be on select Wal-Mart store shelves in 2,500 locations. Sam?s Club will only be getting the iPhone 3G in 69 stores in the US. There is still no word on suspected pricing due to the fact that many would wait till after Christmas to pick up the phone at a cheaper price. AT&T is going to be supporting Wal-Mart as far as activations go. Sam?s Club kiosks that are managed by Radio Shack however will not be getting the iPhone 3G. Here is the execution timeline for the launch of the iPhone 3G.

* 12/2 ? 12/5:  AT&T / Wal-Mart MEM Classroom Training for Store Leads
* 12/3 ? 12/19:  AT&T In-Store Training
* 12/26 ? 12/27:  AT&T In-Store Refresher Training
* 12/28: Nationwide Launch
* 12/28 ? 12/30:  Wal-Mart and AT&T War Room Support

LG launches Prada II teaser site, matching Bluetooth watch

11/19/2008, 00:14 |

Not that it wasn't official already or anything, but nothing demonstrates dedication to a product like an exclusive home on the web. Yep, LG has just launched a standalone microsite for the altogether sexy Prada II, and while you already know about the specs -- HSDPA, WiFi, 5-megapixel camera, 3-inch 400 x 240 pixel capacitive multi-touch display and quad-band GSM connectivity -- you probably weren't aware of the matching Prada Link Bluetooth watch. As you'd expect, the timepiece syncs with your Prada II and shows your incoming calls / texts, and we'll go out on a limb and presume that it tells time, too. Sadly, the tidbits we're most interested in (a release date and pricing) aren't clearly available on the site, but we'll be refreshing like madmen hoping for that to change.

Call Center Life Saver

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Next time you're getting heated with a call center agent, calm yourself down by thinking about this story: a man telephones a call center for a routine address change. While on the phone, he suffers a massive brain hemorrhage. The call center agent, recognizing the threat, calls emergency services and provides them with the caller's home address (which she has on her computer screen). Emergency services saves the man's life.

OK...maybe it's not a COMMON scenario, but it happened recently.

Want to see Flash running on the G1? Here?s the video

11/18/2008, 19:30 |

After yesterdays announcement that Adobe was working on Flash for both Windows Mobile and Android, we mentioned that a brief demonstration of Flash running on the G1 was shown. Don’t believe it? The proof is in the pudding. The delicious streaming video pudding.

While there are a few apparent framerate stutters, this is by all indications a work in progress for Adobe. The element was embedded on a bare page, without any other elements whatsoever - not exactly how they’re generally served. This is presumably to ensure that this not-yet-optimized version of Flash had as many resources as possible for the demo, but hopefully the final version will be able to handle more than standalone SWF files.

iFun app turns your iPhone into a Wii-like controller

11/19/2008, 06:12 |

Taking a page out of the Nintendo Wii?s playbook, the iFun app turns your iPhone/iPod Touch into a wireless controller used for game play. It?s specifically designed to work with iFun games and there are a reported four games available ? baseball, basketball, bowling and golf - however, only golf was accessible when I visited thee site.

The game itself is hosted on the internet and the app for the iPhone only enables it to become a wireless controller. Registration is required before you can play, but there is no need to worry about paying fees since both the iFun app and registration are free of charge.

I?ve tried it out myself and there’s a considerable delay when performing an action and seeing it replicated on the screen. This is understandable considering that all the data is fed through the internet. It should also be noted that the iPhone?s sleek form factor isn?t the most easy to handle especially if you’re swinging the device around like a golf club. Extra care should be exercised so as not to accidentally hit someone with a flying iPhone.

Nevertheless, this latest gaming app does show a lot of potential. If the developer could find a way to resolve the lag and come out with more games to support such an interface, I have no doubt that this will be a future best seller.

Asus still sticking with the whole 7-inch screen thing

08/01/2008, 17:30 |

2719485813_60c8ec7ebb_o

The Asus Eee line of 7-inch netbooks appears to be alive and kicking, thanks to some images over on Eee PC News (in German). It?s believed that the Eee PC 701SD will come in three flavors (see this leaked slide); one marked ?701SD(30G HDD)?, one simply marked ?701SD?, and one marked ?701SD-4G?, so we?ve got one with a 30GB standard hard drive, one with a 4GB flash drive, and one with who-knows-what.

Aside from that, Laptop notes some subtle updates in the form of a chassis similar to the 901 series (except for the round edges), a new logo on the lid, slightly separated touchpad buttons, and the assumption that these machines will use Intel?s Atom processor. I?d really like to see the screen resolution get pushed to at least 1024 pixels wide versus the current crop of 7-inchers? 800 pixel wide resolution. It just makes so much more sense for web browsing.

More detailed specs, pricing, and launch dates are yet to be revealed but, hey, Asus has plans to release a total of 23 different models when all is said and done. So maybe we?ll just see these falling into our laps, rapid-fire style.

NFL Sprints to wireless

11/06/2008, 15:50 |

The Wall Street Journal reports today that “Sprint Will Kick Off a Series of Eight Football Phone-Casts”:

For the first time Thursday, a National Football League game — the Cleveland Browns vs. the Denver Broncos — will be broadcast on Sprint mobile phones as part of the wireless company’s exclusive partnership with the league. That partnership deal is valued at about $500 million over five years.

Over the next seven weeks, Sprint will phone-cast the eight games that are televised solely on the NFL Network, the league’s cable channel. For the past three seasons, the NFL has struggled to persuade major cable operators to include its channel in their basic programming packages.

With the NFL Network is available in only about 40% of American households, Sprint executives hope the NFL games can do for their company what the league’s Sunday Ticket package has done for satellite-television provider DirecTV Group. Sunday Ticket, which is exclusive to DirecTV, allows dedicated fans to see every NFL game on Sunday afternoons, and has been crucial to DirectTV’s growth.

G1 capable of multi-touch input? Looks like it.

11/18/2008, 00:01 |

Whenever the G1 vs iPhone debate gets underway, iPhone purists are quick to flag the G1’s lack of multi-touch input support. Turns out, it might just be able to handle it after all -on the hardware end, at least. Whilst tearing his G1’s workings apart line-by-line, a crafty coder going by RyeBrye came across an interesting artifact. It seems the driver for the Synaptics touchscreen has some code commented out; after recompiling the kernel with said code back in, he was able to track two finger presses at once.

So if the hardware supports it, why no multi-touch on the G1? Patents, presumably. While this in no way actually enables to you to do any kind of multi-touch funnin’ immediately (nothing made for the G1 is currently coded for use with multi-touch, afterall), it’s certainly a step in the right direction. Though we probably won’t see any official support for multi-touch on the G1 any time soon, someone with a bit of spare time to tinker will probably figure out a way to make use of it before too long.

IE Mobile 6 Will Not Be Available For Existing WinMo Smartphones

11/13/2008, 21:50 |

The Windows Mobile team has confirmed that the upcoming IE Mobile 6 browser or "IE 6 on 6" will not be made available as a separate download for current WinMo 6.1 smartphones. Instead, the update will only show up on devices released starting at the end of this year or in early 2009. The reason, according to Microsoft, is that "the rich media experiences that IE Mobile 6 enables require more powerful, advanced devices." IE doesn't have a whole lot of fans, but if you already have a WinMo smartphone it would suck to miss out on what appears to be a huuuge improvement. [Mobile Burn]

MLK Jr. Estate Threatening To Sue Vendors For Selling Products With Obama And King

11/18/2008, 18:32 |
The family of Martin Luther King Jr. has unfortunately done plenty to tarnish the great man's legacy over the last few decades, specifically in being overly aggressive claiming "ownership" of anything having to do with King, and demanding money from various entities that show King's speeches. A decade ago they were involved in a big legal fight with CBS for showing King's I Have A Dream speech. Who knew that dream was locked up thanks to intellectual property laws?

Now the family is apparently threatening to sue anyone selling any kind of merchandise that includes images of King and President-Elect Obama, claiming that if others are making money off of King's image, King's family should get a cut: "We do feel that if somebody's out there making a dollar, we should make a dime." So, now, apparently that dream is to keep making money off a speech that was delivered decades ago.
