11/14/2008, 12:59 |
Samsung Eternity (SGH-A867)- View Specs

AT&T today launched the Samsung Eternity, a touch-screen phone with a full-touch QWERTY keypad and support for AT&T Mobile TV.

The Eternity features a black and chrome exterior with a large 3.2-inch touch screen with haptic support, providing subtle vibrations that confirm selections.

Samsung's TouchWiz user interface has specially designed widgets to customize the phone. A quick and simple "drag and drop" feature lets users instantly access their favorite functions, such as the clock, music player, instant messaging, photos and AT&T Mobile TV all from the home screen.

Three dedicated keys on the lower portion make navigation straightforward. It has a built-in accelerometer to automatically detect motion and the orientation to auto-rotation of the display for motion sensing games and photo scrolling.

The Eternity includes a 3.0-megapixel camera with video capture, Video Share calling, advanced messaging capabilities, including Mobile Email and instant messaging (Yahoo!, Windows Live, AOL), Bluetooth technology and a microSD memory card slot supporting up to 8GB.

AT&T Mobile TV provides streaming television content and sporting events from programs such as CBS Mobile, CNBC, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, FOX News, FOX Mobile, NBC 2Go, MSNBC, MTV, Nickelodeon, CNN Mobile and PIX.

Its browser can surf the Internet, navigate pages with the touch of a finger and support easy zoom-in and zoom-out capabilities.

"The Eternity brings the big screen to the palm of your hand," said Bill Ogle, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung America. "This touch-screen mobile TV handset is part of Samsung's TouchWiz line of phones and keeps you entertained and connected on the go."

The Samsung Eternity is available through stores or online for $149.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Comcast not fined, but must stop blocking P2P traffic

08/01/2008, 18:40 |

Here?s an update to the story about the FCC versus Comcast that we posted on Wednesday. The FCC has officially ruled today and it turns out that Comcast will not be fined for throttling peer-to-peer network traffic, but it will have to stop discriminating against certain internet traffic until the company comes up with a compliance plan ?to fully disclose its practices? to customers.

Bloomberg reports that the five-member FCC panel voted 3-2 against Comcast. Critics of Comcast?s traffic-regulating activities are calling the ruling a ?bellwether case?. It?s important to note that although Comcast has been ordered to stop throttling traffic, it appears that the reasoning behind the ruling has more to do with the fact that the throttling wasn?t being disclosed to customers, not that the throttling was actually taken place. So it appears that bandwidth management can and will continue, it?ll just have to be more transparent.

Is Yahoo done with search? (Owen Thomas/Valleywag)

Owen Thomas / Valleywag:
Is Yahoo done with search?  —  Among the many windmills Jerry Yang tilted at in his brief career as Yahoo's CEO was his devotion to Web search.  It veered on an obsession for him.  It played into his decision to resist Microsoft's offers to shower him with cash, first for his whole company, then for just its search business.

Motorola announces VE66 slider phone

11/19/2008, 09:49 |

Call me a bit paranoid, but the sight of this phone from Motorola gives me the chills that there might be a new RAZR-trend looming on the horizon.

Motorola has just announced the VE66. It’s a new slider that looks a lot like the ZN5, Motorla and Kodaks little collaboration. The VE66 sports a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash, image stabilization, WiFi, CrystalTalk noise reduction and a navigation wheel.

That all sounds pretty good, but the familiar design choice is freaking me out. I’m really hoping Motorola hasn’t regained an infatuation with the old RAZR design that dominated the entire Motorola collection the past couple of years. Is my paranoia getting the best of me? I sincerely hope so.

No word on pricing, but availability is scheduled for the last quarter of 2008 which should mean any day now.

Verizon's BlackBerry Storm Private Pre-Sale Has No Storms

11/18/2008, 13:26 |

Oops. You know that pre-sale flyer that was doing the rounds to Verizon "VIPs", the one with the BlackBerry Storm on the left hand side? Turns out that if you, a VIP, turn up at a store with that very flyer you'll not be able to buy a Storm ahead of its launch. You won't, in fact, be able to touch one to see what it's like. You won't be able to see one. There are none, apparently. All you're able to do is get yourself put on a list for a call from Verizon on Friday so you can pre-order the phone. Okay, the flyer didn't make definite promises...but it's pretty much 100% misleading for Storm fans. Guess everyone has to wait for the real date. [BGR]

Canadian Call Center Woes

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Here's an article from the Edmonton Journal about the closure of a Toronto Dominion Bank call center in the city, for a net loss of about 140 jobs.

Though this is a Canadian company shutting down a Canadian call center, there have been other Canadian call center closures that can be laid at the foot of the weak U.S. dollar.

Outsourcing to Canada (an important destination in the so-called "near-shore" outsourcing model) is no longer saving U.S. companies money due to the unfavorable exchange rates for the U.S. dollar.

A recent Datamonitor report covered on TMCnet by associate editor Patrick Barnard revealed that companies are truly starting to pack up Canadian operations. The most notable U.S. outsourcer to do so thus far is Cincinnati-based Convergys Corporation.

The Datamonitor report also cites a waning of interest in Canada in relation to the increasing interest in having Spanish-speaking agents on staff for the growing consumer base of American Hispanics. (Canada does not offer a labor force with a high percentage of Spanish-speakers.)

Hands on with Colorware's Custom Blackjack II Process

11/17/2008, 14:00 |
http://www.modaco.com/content/smart...ack-ii-process/

"Last month I posted in this topic about Colorware's process for customising the Samsung Blackjack II. Colorware graciously offered to repaint a truly battered Blackjack II that team member 'encece' hooked me up with, and i've been using the resulting device for a few weeks now. So what's the finished result like? Gorgeous!"

Over at MoDaCo, Paul was brave enough to send in his Smartphone for the ol' paint job finish. I have to say that I am highly impressed. While the Samsung Blackjack II is a powerful device, I was always put off at how cheap and shiny the outer body looked. It was as if Samsung had learned nothing from the mistakes of other manufactures and ignored the fact that shiny finishes on and tiny gadget turns the device into a fingerprint magnet. Even if you do not suffer from my hatred for smudges and fingerprints, there is no denying that after spending 5 minutes with a super shiny device like the Blackjack II that it just looks trashy and cheap because it is all smudged up and gross looking. From the look of the images that Paul has posted of this new paint job, while the device still looks shiny, it looks a whole lot more refreshing than the standard black paint job. Hopefully these lighter and brighter colors will do more to hide all of the smudges this device picks up.

The Google Mobile Brain Chuckles at Apple

06/10/2008, 05:35 |

Google Brain

The big brain over in the google mobile garage is chuckling right now as Apple amuses the crowd…

gps, 3G, 3rd party apps - voip, ebay, sling, etc… yadda yadda… my phone could do all that 2 years ago”, mutters the brain. “But yes, the iPhone is much prettier and shiny and I thank you from the bottom of my heart”, the brain goes on…

“Apple you are creating my market for me. That is really nice of you. Oh, and an extra special thank you for reducing the price, that just validates and solidifes my thinking (but I’ll keep that to myself). Thanks again and keep up the good work.” she continues.

PS oh, and the brains over at RIM and MSFT are chuckling… or maybe they are shaking - not sure on that just yet ;)

T-Mobile G1 coming to Walmart for $148.88

Well, now isn't this something? Best Buy has its fancy little iPhone 3G, but it'll be Wally World offering up the G1 outside of official T-Mobile outlets. As we'd heard yesterday, 550 Walmart stores across the country will begin selling the Android-powered handset beginning tomorrow, and folks who opt to pick one up here versus a traditional T-Mob store will save $31.11. Yep -- according to company spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien, the new / upgrade-eligible customer price for a Walmart-sourced G1 will be just $148.88 with a 2-year agreement. Wait, what? You already purchased your G1 at the full price? They always said the early bird pays the premium... or something along those lines.

That was fast: Blizzard Authenticator now sold out

01/01/1970, 01:00 |
Blizzard Authenticator sold out - Image 1If you were thinking of picking up that shiny new thingamajig called the Blizzard Authenticator, you'll have a bit more time to ruminate over your decision. Blizzard's officially sent out word that the Blizzard Authenticator has been sold out.

Over on the General Discussion forums for World of Warcraft, Tyren announced the news to the public, noting that "it will be several weeks before they're available again."

Tyren also mentioned the demand for the authenticator from non-US members of the North American realms and how said people were unable to pick it up. He explained further,

This was due to shipping-related issues with our store for this device that could not be resolved by the time it first went on sale. Rather than delay the launch, we felt it was important to make the Authenticator available to as many people as possible as quickly as we could. We're continuing to work on a solution for these players and will provide an update as further progress is made.

In any event, you'll have to wait if you still haven't picked up your Authenticator. In the meantime practice caution in your Internet habits to avoid malware that could compromise your account.

Telus offers up HTC Touch Pro for $299.99 (3-yr contract)

11/19/2008, 01:48 |

Good news for HTC Touch Pro hopefuls! A week after popping up with Bell, the QWERTY-enabled handset is now officially available with Telus.

The Touch Pro showed up on the Telus website in the last 24 hours for $299.99 on a 3-year contract, $549.99 on a 2-year contract, $599.99 for a single year, and $649.99 contract-free.

It?s obviously more expensive than what Bell is offering, but if you fancy Telus as a provider, than the heftier price tag of the Touch Pro shouldn?t be much of an issue for you. At least you now have options as to where to get your Pro on.

Mobile Data Revolution Brought to you by Apple

11/19/2008, 18:10 |

Admob just published their October metrics report. First, I should say - congratulations to Admob. They are at nearly SIX BILLION (5.8 billion to be exact) ad requests per month. That's a huge number compared to where they were a year ago. And, they don't represent the entire market.

There's a lot more mobile web browsing going on than they see. And what is crazy - or not so crazy - is that the majority of it is still on your basic feature phone. An astonishing four percent IS on iPhones. You have to go down to #10 on the list to get to another mid-sized device with a larger than average screen. The RAZR ranks #2. This creates an interesting development dilemma for content providers, but more on that later.

Page three of the report is dedicated to the impact of the iPhone on the market. It's definitely worth a read. I won't steal their thunder by listing all the highlights here. Topline - they had nearly 150 million requests from iPhones in the US alone. The requests about doubled between end of September and end of October. (Can't wait to see Apple/AT&T's Q4 earnings ... how many of these devices are you guys selling?)

How about 17 percent of ad requests coming out of Mexico coming from the iPhone? Can't remember which carrier Apple launched with there. T-Mobile won't tell me how much they are pricing iPhone data plans at in the US. (Kidding)

Admob and this industry are just getting started. Apple announced 200 million downloads a couple of weeks back. They haven't said what percentage are paid and what percentage are free. Let's assume the majority are free (I'll use myself and go with a sample size of n=1). There is a tremendous audience there that will likely be served ads in the future to support the free download model. Admob has some cool ad formats they've developed for the iPhone that we're just starting to see. Their report sites 400 iPhone apps and sites currently being served. I expect to see the traffic from iPhones continue to increase as more applications use their product.

The Safari browser on the iPhone is great, etc., but I only use it as a last resort if there isn't a widget or app that will get me what I need.

This is getting to be pretty exciting. Stay tuned.
