Tutorial: Baja tu Windows Live! Messenger

Dale ahora a Cerrar sesión. No has concluido.

You knew this was bound to happen. Like any good piece of gadgetry, there's always someone who can't wait to get their grubby hands all over it... and rip it to shreds to see how it works. Today we present the disemboweling of two of the latest challengers to the Eee's netbook throne: the MSI Wind, and the Acer Aspire One. The Aspire One at least gets the courtesy of a proper unboxing before the medical proceedings begin; the Wind just gets cracked open like a cold PBR at your cousin's barbecue. Don't take our word for it, however -- truck on over to the read links and see the messes with your very own eyes.

Don't deny it -- you totally blew the original Duct Tape Server off as some one-off project created after a hard night of truth or dare, but the DTS team is out to prove that this here is no fad. Just this week the DTS II (that's Duct Tape Server II for those who prefer things broken down) was introduced shortly after DTS I came unglued. Reportedly, this unit will be on server row at MillionManLan and will pack a 2.2GHz Pentium 4, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive and a few fans to keep things breezy. Hit up the read link for a slew of build shots, and click on through for a quick video.

The Best Windows Mobile 6.1 Device: Omnia V. Touch Diamond

07/05/2008, 22:22 | Cell Phones etc.
GSM Arena winmo 6.1 review

GSM Arena did a thorough comparison review of the first two WinMo 6.1 smartphones in the market. The HTC Touch Diamond has a better screen (Diamond’s VGA screen is the best in the industry) and OS while the Samsung Omnia has a better battery life, processor, camera and a universal virtual keyboard and of course the DivX support is nice as well.

In the end, though, the reviewers at GSM-A couldn’t decide which one is better, but the effort at getting into the features of both phones in detail are very commendable. read more of it here.

Gigabyte gets official with 8.9-inch M912V swivel screen netbook

07/05/2008, 21:04 | Engadget

It has taken long enough, but Gigabyte finally saw fit to make official its intriguing M912V. If you'll recall, this critter popped up and caught eyes at Computex, as it's essentially a netbook with a swivel screen -- think Tablet PC, but miniature. Specs wise, you're looking at an 8.9-inch WXGA (1,280 x 768) LED-backlit panel, Intel's 1.6GHz Atom processor, a 2.5-inch HDD (120/160/250GB), 1.3-megapixel camera, twin 1.5-watt speakers, 1GB of RAM and your choice of Windows XP, Vista or Linux. Furthermore, you'll find Bluetooth, WiFi, an ExpressCard slot, a wide of array of ports and even an option for HSDPA expansion. It should be noted that there's no internal optical drive (nor a price or release date just yet), but at least Gigabyte's offering up a netbook with some inkling of innovation, right?

Paying $599 for iPhone 3G that?s still locked to AT&T

07/05/2008, 19:44 | Product Reviews Net

iPhone 3G thats still locked
Many current iPhone owners will be happy to upgrade to the 3G iPhone for the obvious improvements and if you are on certain phone plans, it could even mean a free next generation iPhone.

The basic price of an iPhone 2.0 is $199 but you will need to take out a new 2-year contract with AT&T, if you do not want to do that then its going to cost you.

The problem with buying the 3G iPhone with no contract is that you will have to pay $699 for a 16GB and $599 for a 8GB iPhone; although it is the first time the United States has had this option.

What I have trouble with is if the phone is still locked to AT&T, does it make any sense to buy an iPhone 3G with no contract for $599 and still be locked to AT&T?

For people who do not like being tied to contracts and still want Apple?s phone, I guess having that freedom will come at a heavy price. Are you willing to pay it?

Windows Live!

3D mammograms increase breast cancer detection by 23 percent

Stereo Mammogram
Scientists have developed stereo mammograms -- breast X-rays taken with special cameras and at multiple angles -- that they say can help them increase detection of breast cancer by 23-percent while decreasing false alarms by 46-percent. By overlaying images taken at different angles or using 3D glasses, Researchers at the Mayo clining say they can now see behind dense tissue that would normally block potential problem areas. Since early detection is a key factor in beating breast cancer, this is an exciting new development.

Call of Duty 4: Larger burden on Sony PS3 than Xbox 360

07/05/2008, 18:43 | Product Reviews Net

Call of Duty 4
Games like Call of Duty 4 run at a framerate of 60 frames per second on both systems. But Call of Duty 4 is a game that experienced technical problems with various bottlenecks due to the varying levels of action that occur on the screen. The game was originally designed to run at 60 frames per second at 720p, but it caused drops in the framerate.

The proof of this is the fact that Call of Duty 4 runs at a resolution of only 640p on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. This may be ?equal? in terms of what is displayed on the screen, but the FACT is that Call of Duty 4 is putting a much larger burden on the PS3 than it is the Xbox 360.

Confirmation of this can be seen in the large number of games that ?run smoothly at 60 frames per second on the Xbox 360, but struggle to run at 30 frames per second on the Playstation 3.? That was a quote from Gamespot.

It?s simple math: The Xbox 360 can display approximately 500,000,000 polygons per second, compared to 275,000,000 polygons per second for the Playstation 3.

Multi-platform games use what is called a ?Lowest Common Denominator? form of programming.

Basically, what this means is the developers start out by saying to themselves, ?We need to develop a game for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3.?

Then, the developers put limits on how many polygons they are going to put on the screen, and they determine what framerate the game will run at as a result of that number.

When the developers multiply the number of polygons displayed on the screen by the number of frames being displayed each second, they examine what that number is. Multi-platform games can NEVER display more than 275,000,000 polygons per second, or else they can?t be released for the Playstation 3, since the PS3 cannot display more than 275,000,000 polygons per second.

As a result, developers are often conservative with the number of polygons being displayed with multi-platform games, especially with the poor reputation of inconsistent framerates that the Playstation 3 has acquired over time.

It basically comes down to these THREE factors:
If a multi-platform game running at 30 frames per second on the Playstation 3 uses 250,000,000 polygons or less, it gives the developers the ability to allow the Xbox 360 version to run at 60 frames per second, since 500,000,000 is double the number of 250,000,000.

If a multi-platform game running at 30 frames per second on the Playstation 3 uses over 250,000,000 polygons per second, it means the Xbox 360 version is also forced to run at only 30 frames per second. This is an unfortunate situation, because it means the Playstation 3 will be using 90-100% of its power by displaying somewhere between 250,000,000 to 275,000,000 polygons per second, while the Xbox 360 will only be using 60% of its power, since the Xbox 360 has so much more polygon power.

If a multi-platform game is intended to run at 60 frames per second on the Playstation 3, the Xbox 360 version will also run at 60 frames per second. The Playstation 3 version will be limited to 275,000,000 polygons per second. The Xbox 360 will also be limited to 275,000,000 polygons per second, due to the fact that 275,000,000 is the Lowest Common Denominator. This is unfortunate, because it means the Playstation 3 version will be using between 90% to 100% of the systems power, while the Xbox 360 will be using only 60% of the systems power. Call of Duty 4 is an excellent example of this situation.

The Playstation 3 only transfers data at a rate of 54MB per second as a Blu-ray player being used for movies. When it comes to gaming, there are hardware ?bottlenecks? that the Playstation 3 faces, which allows the PS3 to transfer data at a rate of only 9MB per second. The Xbox 360 transfers data at a rate of 16MB per second.

The Official Playstation Magazine wrote an article about the longer load times of PS3 games shortly after the Playstation 3 was launched. The only time the PS3 does not have to deal with either noticeably or significantly longer load times is when the game is placed on the PS3 hard drive. Sadly, it often takes over TWENTY long minutes to write the game onto the PS3 hard drive. Even when a PS3 game is written onto a hard drive, the load times between Xbox 360 games and PS3 games is virtually identical, as we saw in Devil May Cry 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4.

Gamespot has conducted a Graphics Comparison between the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 each year since the Playstation 3 has been available. Xbox 360 has been declared the winner of the Graphics Comparison each of the three years: 2006, 2007, 2008.

2008 shows that the gap in performance continues to get bigger, in favor of the Xbox 360. Here is the hyperlink that shows the newest comparison?one the Xbox 360 easily defeats the Playstation.

Also, the Xbox 360 uses 10MB of eDRAM. This new form of RAM technology is something that even Windows Vista-based PCs do not yet take advantage of. The next release of Direct-X on the PC will start to take advantage of eDRAM technology for gaming, but it still hasn?t happened yet.

This just goes to show you how incredibly far ahead of its time the Xbox 360 Unified-Shader GPU/Multi-Core CPU design is.

Thanks to Mike Zoran

¿BlackBerry off line en Movilnet?

Paciencia amig@s!

Current top 10 of Akihabara?s most expensive retro games (photo report)

07/05/2008, 17:41 | CrunchGear

Here are the top 10 of the most expensive retro games currently sold in Tokyo’s Akihabara district (based on my research in about 10 stores). I took the picture above in the place I love the most on this earth, the Super Potato used game store in the heart of Akihabara. Believe it or not, I didn’t see anything cool gear-wise so this list must do as a “live” report from the world’s Nerdvana for now.

Compared to 1999, when I was still a game collector and went there for the first time, prices went down dramatically but there are still some very, very pricey carts and CDs for sale. Some of these were available outside Japan in localized versions.

Top 10: San San $420/boxed
(1994, Genesis, based on the Japanese board game Go)

Top 9: Gradius Archinmendes $470/cart only
(1987, NES, promo version of Gradius made for a Japanese noodle maker)

Top 8: Kinnikuman $560/cart only
(1985, NES, released in the USA as M.U.S.C.L.E.)

Top 8: Foreman for real $560/boxed
(1995, Genesis)

Top 6: Virtual Bart $590/boxed
(1995, Genesis, based on “The Simpsons”)

Top 5: Safety Rally $750/cart only
(1986, NES, racing game)

Top 4: Delisoba deluxe $920/boxed
(1997, Sega Saturn, based on the terrible Courier Crisis)

Top 4: Tag Team Pro Wrestling Special $920/cart only
(1986, NES)

Top 2: Darius Alpha $960/boxed
(1991, PC-Engine/Turbo Grafx, shooting game, limited to 800 copies)

Top 1: Kidou Senshi-Z Gundam Hot Scramble Final Version $1,400/boxed

What Sounds Do You Use For Notifications?

07/05/2008, 17:00 | Smartphone Thoughts

I was wondering what sounds you use for various notifications on your device. I suspect a few of you leave the default sounds on, but most of you probably customize just about every sound on the device. Here is my listing of key sounds:

  • Ringer - telephone ringer from the show 24. I also have the phone vibrate simultaneously.
  • Email - I use the default Alarm3 sound that comes with the device. Well below the annoying threshold for emails.
  • SMS messages - A sound from the STNG computer - annoying for frequent SMS messages, but great for just a few a day
  • Reminder - TOS Red Alert klaxon - guaranteed to keep you from being late to any meeting. I also use this to wake up.

I pretty much leave the rest on the default settings, except for MMS, which I turn completely off. So, what's on your device?

Microsoft Equipt vs open source and free software

07/05/2008, 12:13 | Product Reviews Net

Microsoft Equipt vs open source
The computer users of the world have been getting more interested in open source and free software for some time now and Microsoft?s new Equipt subscription service is aimed at defending the Office franchise.

As we reported the other day, the pricing model for Equipt will be $69.99 per year and you get a lot of software for the money that can be accessed by up to three computers.

Circuit City have got the exclusive rights to Equipt beginning mid-July and it?s hoped by Microsoft that the convenience of Equipt will stop some Office users moving towards the open source or free software route.

There is a lot of competition for Microsoft and that?s why this new service was needed to keep them in the game, as IBM is offering Lotus Symphony free and also other brands have similar free Office software packages.

The sales results for Office products have shown a downward pattern and the last quarter saw Office products among consumers drop 39%.

Will you use the new Equipt subscription service or do you have another favorite?

Researchers boast of progress with printed electronics

07/05/2008, 12:02 | Engadget

Filed under:

There's certainly no shortage of researchers working on printable electronics these days, but a group from the EU-funded CONTACT project is now boasting of a "major step" towards being able to print electronics on everyday materials. At the moment, they seem to be focused primarily on printing organic TFT displays directly onto glass plates, which apparently required the use of some aggressive solvents that "attack" the organic materials between the TFT and liquid crystal layers. Their current Labratester 1 printer (pictured above) apparently still has some problems precisely lining up each layer, however, but they say that'll be fixed with the addition of some optical cameras in the Labratester 2 machine they're now working on. Eventually, they say the system could be used to easily and cheaply print displays directly on watch faces or glasses, or even print other electronics onto paper or other fabrics.
